Remake of V? Fuuuuck that. How about some original titles. Remakes can go and die for another 100 years.
Well, you're getting an original title. So rejoice.
But an FF5 remake wherein Ito is given the opportunity to redesign the job system and add new features is incredibly appealing.

You know Himu. I love you like a brother. But what you just said was so retarded, and so random, it hurts my heart. I would love a FFV remake as much as anyone else, but this is a brand new RPG title from the people who made the wonderful remake of FFIV. It is a chance for Yoshida to take charge of the character design and art direction of a brand new game. It looks totally creative, and has 27 jobs. Why anyone would shit on this simply because a FFV remake has not been announced, is beyond me. It just makes me want to cry that you are so ignorant to the joy this brings to us.

What is FF Gaiden about? Can't say I'm terribly interested in FFXIII(Still will give it a try like the rest...There really isn't a comparable RPG in terms of Budget). What make FF Gaiden more appealing is all compared to FFXIII

Hmm... well, for one thing, it features a return to the job system I love (only with new evolutions and twists to it that, so far, seem really fun). The job system has always been something of a foundation in the Final Fantasy series, and I feel that, from a gameplay perspective, it's typically done some of its best stuff when that system and its fundamental rules have been kept in mind. A new game built around the idea of changing jobs and mixing and matching abilities appeals to me a lot.

Aside from that, I really like the staff working on this game and still don't feel I've gotten enough stuff from them recently, especially in comparison to Motomu Toriyama. I like Takashi Tokita, but he just hasn't done a lot lately... up until the FF4 remake, which I thought was fantastic. And I love Yoshida's artwork (see, for example, the picture that ducky posted; so cute!). Yoshida is bar none my favorite artist in gaming -- the only one who comes close is Hiroshi Minagawa.

And aside from that, I just find the idea of a Final Fantasy game with deliberately retro designs very appealing. A simpler story which, according to the developers, will leave a lot more to the imagination by being told not through cutscenes but more through NPC conversations -- I like that, and we don't get a lot of that. "Old school" gameplay.

It's just the kind of thing I'm craving more right now. As I said, that isn't meant to diminish FF13, and I don't expect many to agree with me. But that's where I'm at.

One of the few instances where I was disappointed we got a new game and not a remake. I mean, it's a light warriors game with a job system. Why not do FF5? :(

I love FF5 and would love an FF5 remake, but I'm much happier they're doing this over remaking that. I would've been very, very pleased with an FF5 remake, especially given the quality of the FF4 remake and the possibility of Ito reworking the gameplay of said remake as much as he did (brilliantly) for FF4. But a new game, with a new twist on the job system and all new stuff to explore (new dungeons, new abilities, new bosses, new jobs, new designs)... yeah, that's definitely want I want even more.

If Ito is doing game design on 4 Warriors of Light (I really hope he is), I'll be so much more excited, too. The rebalancing work he did on FF4 was incredible. He made almost every single ability useful. The class skills, all the different spells (including buffs/debuffs/status spells, which are almost NEVER useful)... And the boss fights were genius in that game. Plus, he's the master of the job system. So bring it on.

I see many mentioning lack of time as reason for wanting more handheld games. I feel the exact opposite. I often work 6 day weeks and late nights, so when I do play my games I want a high quality experience, great sound and visuals. I don't want to play on a little screen with headphones.

I do appreciate the handheld on my train commute everyday but even then carrying a dedicated gaming device gets cumbersome, so I often end up using iPhone for gaming.

I get that some people live totally different lifestyles and have 10 hours free every day to stay chained in front of a television, but it's surprising to me that so many people can't see why portables are appealing. Especially for people like myself... I've been gaming for so long, and that's probably one factor in contributing to me just not caring about the overall graphical experience that much. It's a great thing to have! And when I play those (increasingly infrequent) home console games that really grab and hold my attention for a long span of time, I can definitely appreciate lush visuals and well realized artwork. But it's not a huge deal for me, and I'm also fine and can easily appreciate more scaled down visuals.

As far as bending a neck or squinting my eyes or getting hand cramps... I see these complaints so often from people. I dunno! None of them have ever been an issue for me. Because I can shift my body position any way I want when using a portable (just like using a laptop computer versus a desktop), I'm pretty much always in a comfortable position, and the eye stuff's never been a problem for me. The screen may be smaller, but it's not a dozen feet away, either.

Hopefully this helps you see where some people are coming from.

I totally understand were you're coming from, I see why alot of people actually prefer portable gaming and the argument that portable>console is quite solid from the perspective of individual preference. However, what I said wasn't directed at people like you, it was towards those naive gamers in here who don't seem to understand why some people actually don't want developers to focus largely on portables but consoles. It just seems like the majority of the people in here joining the debate of portable vs. console is because someone initiated the idea a some point this week and the topic has been so hot that people are taking sides with no valid reasoning. Which is just totally lame. It's got to the point where we have people saying 4WoL>FFXIII. Lolz.

The only time I play with my handhelds is when I'm on the train which often takes around 4+ hours to get to where I need, or when there is a new game on the DS/PSP I really want to play. What I said about 50+ hours of neck bending was only an example in the defence of why someone would rather play on consoles, but even with that we got people snapping at the idea, and countering with "get glasses" and "why are you bending your neck when you play portable games" seriously thats just pathetic.

I live less than a mile from my working place which I guess makes me a big exception in today's society. I get out of my bed at 7:30 and get back home at 16:45 so I have 6 hours to play games in front of my 50" plasma. I do have a PSP but I rarely use it to play games anymore.
First of all, handhelds visuals are pfff ... I love the 2D games and I don't mind the small screen, but the 3D visuals hurt my eyes. Ultimate Ghost´n Goblins and Castlevania Dracula X make me puke. >< So this alone greately narrows down the entire PSP library to just a few games.
Secondly, the whole concept of mobile gaming doesn't appeal to me. I don't like gaming when I make use of public transport because it's unsocial and makes me stressy because it distracts me too much. I always play (portable) games in my bed or a comfy couch when I'm alone.

If persona goes mobile I'll skip it just like I skipped DQIX and all the FF remakes on the DS.

It's just kind of an incomprehensible defense, is all. If someone was like "I don't like the way the DS sits in my hands, I cramp up" I'd be like "oh, okay, makes sense" but I actually don't understand how someone can't find a good angle to play at where they're not straining their neck.

It's just weird to me that you guys care more about plasma televisions than games. I'm a huge handheld evangelist but I don't throw a fit and refuse to play an FFXIII or a Persona 4 (100 hours clocked!) or a Mirror's Edge or whatever when it comes out on a home system I own.

I can see mostly where you're coming from but I don't understand this part at all. Do you socialize on public transit? You wouldn't happen to be the crazy dude with the urine-soaked pants and the nutty beard that's always trying to talk to me on the train, would you?

Most of my high quality experiences this gen have been on handhelds. Visuals are a nice extra for me, but they're not why I play games.

I've never had a difficult time carrying a wallet, an iPhone, and a gaming device (either the DS or PSP depending on what I'm into at the time) in my pockets.

I can understand why some people would prefer games on home consoles versus portable ones; what I can less understand are the people then write that they find it incomprehensible (or, dare I say it? inconceivable) how anyone could prefer it the other way around. Some people act like it's absurd that anyone could actually want to play games on a portable system and act like it has no advantages whatsoever. The other thing I have a tough time with is those for whom television size is such an important factor that the game doesn't even exist if it's on a smaller screen.

Yeah, exactly so. Hey, I like gaming portably more these days, this I've as much as admitted. But like I've also said, when there's a game I'm really interested in that comes out, I sure find a way to make the time to sit in front of the tv and play it. I can't play as many of them, but I'm sure not going to pass up on new installments in old favorite series, or other games that look fun and interesting. So it seems so weird to me if someone is like "I'm a fan of DQ! but DQ9 doesn't exist" or "I'm a fan of SMT! but I refuse to acknowledge the existence of portable SMT, even if it's the only SMT all gen" or whatever other super-high quality game you want to toss out.

You're not supposed to be social on public transportation. If I'm not playing a video game, I'd be immersed in an MP3 player with headphones or reading a book (or both!).

I don't even care about the sounds OR visuals. I would just be nice to be able to play these on a TV. :lol

But I have accepted the fact this the DS is the new home for these fantastic old school (Save for the occasional games like Demon Soul) throwbacks and I have just learned to accept it.

Well, good for you but I don't buy 3D handheld games because they are products I can't enjoy. Not because I refuse to buy them out of principle. I didn't choose to not be able to enjoy mobile games with primitive 3D visuals. It's something I have to cope with.

Yes, sometimes I socialize on public transit with complete strangers and I do the same during noon lunch in the hospital. Some people like to have a conversation, they like to know where you're heading to or just need someone to listen to their story. It feels more natural to me than sitting in front a someone for one hour without saying a single word, trying to avoid contact as if he doesn't exist. But I can guarantee you I'm not one of those. I rarely start a conversation, people just like to talk to me I guess.

I am going to be totally honest. My only exposure to SMT/Persona games are from watching the persona 4 endurance run on giantbomb.com. And from that, what I would want is a sequel similar to persona 4, with new characters and engrossing story on 360/Ps3.

I don't know whether it will happen, or if people agree, but persno 4 is alot of fun and more of the same is fine by me.

As if the only people who can enjoy portable games are some kind of "defense force," whereas you're the one who simply writes off their existence entirely. I upgrade my "how sad" comment earlier to "how pathetic."

You're welcome to your opinion. I have a preference, and i'm hoping the game this thread is about caters to it, simple as. And wouldn't you know it, i own both a DSL and a PSP.

Oh, you do? I'm sorry, I didn't realize. I mean, posting how a handheld Shin Megami Tensei is the same thing as zero Shin Megami Tensei games and then saying that the only people who could possibly be happy about it are a defense force kinda tilted my thoughts the other way.

Posting all that and then saying "but I own a DS and PSP!" is a little bit like the racist dude who says "but some of my best friends are black people."

No, remakes can go die for another 100 years after FF6 DS.

And FF5 DS could be tricky, I mean they'd have to practialy have Atlus write the script to get it any more In-context-yet-not-exactly-what-was-said-in-the-orginal-japanese than FF5 Advance.

And on the subject of remakes hows about a Persona 4 FES for the Wii with Wii-Diffinition graphics? Maybe a release of 3 FES with 4's Party controll system? (I'm maybe missing the point of the AI in 3, cuz I'm only just geting 3 FES now, mind you).

Mostly is a waste bcos i haven't played them in a while. Only handheld RPG's i've played are Tales of Eternia and FFIV(Close to the end). I won't trade them in bcos i'll get shit credit for them and there are games that catch i want. Finished Castlevania DoS and PoR, want to play OoE and the japanese EBA games(Ouendan?)

The reasons you give for being a fan of handheld gaming don't apply to me. I live in cali, and here public transportation is shit, so everyone drives, and i do too. Has it ever occured to you that some of those people ackownledge the existence of a portable [insert your favorite franchise] but simply aren't interested because the concept of the game has changed?
I only have one favorite franchise and that's final fantasy. Is it weird to skip FFXIV because I don't want to play an MMORPG?
Is it weird to skip DQIX because I don't want to play a game that looks like a lesser experience than DQVIII?
What's weird to me is that you seem to take it for granted that people should find every new installment fun and interesting because they happened to like one or two games in the past. DQIX indisputably is the next main installment of the dragon quest series and the sequel to DQVIII. But it's also indisputable that the game technologically is two generations behind current gen consoles. By using the magic number 'IX', S-E has convinced millions of people that the game is a must-buy.
Which is great, but while others make sure S-E keeps the FF and DQ sequels flowing instead of developing new IP's, I prefer waisting my time with other, imo more impressive looking games.

There is no legitmate reason to want a normal jRPG on the DS.

There is many legitmate reasons to not want a normal jRPG on the DS:

*least powerful for graphics
*lower fidelity sound
*market forces designers to make "SD look" RPGs
*market forces designers to make simple stories <-- Most important. Suikoden Tierkies is the worst jRPG I've played in the last 2 years. I felt like stabbing myself in the face every time I heard/read dialogue in the game. I couldn't believe that I wanted to not play a Suikoden game.
*if you don't want to run WEP, no access to internet on DS

DS should be a handheld for niche RPGs with interesting/different control schemes

Some of it agree with, and others, not so much.

*least powerful for graphics: There's always room for good design.
*lower fidelity sound: Hook it up to speakers or heaphones. The FFXII tracks in FFTA2 sound almost as good as the originals that way.
*market forces and some shit about SD: What? You mean like Strange Journey? Dark Spire?
*Something about stories: That's utter horseshit. Devil Survivor had my favorite RPG story in years. There's nothing that forces shitty stories except laziness and ineptitude on behalf of some developers.
*Internet: Yeah, internet implementation tends to suck on DS.

The absolute BEST thing about portable RPGs is that they force developers into making a lot of concessions that I find extremely user-friendly:

-Quick and to-the-point cut scenes without pointless filler (in contrast to a game like SO4 which had a 40 minute cut scene at one point)
-Dungeons are usually fairly short, but tricky affairs, with ample save points (in contrast to a game like FFXII, or SO4, which had save points spaced 45 min apart)
-Battles are usually quick and strategic

Playing Ring of Fates right now and really enjoying it.

As for "Lower fidelity sound", The World Ends With You had one of my favorite soundtracks so far this gen, ditto with the PSP's Lumines and Every Extend Extra.

I think my ideal system for next gen would be like a more advanced take on the PSP - be able to play on the go for when I'm at my job, and then plug it into the TV to get the wide-screen experience.

*least powerful for graphics: There's always room for good design.

- And good design looks better on PSP, Wii, 360 or PS3 by a mile over the DS. So I don't understand this point?
- Once again, PSP, Wii, 360 or PS3 all have better sound fidelity. So I don't understand this point?
- Great, 2 games, now: FF3, FF4, FFXII: RW, Suikoden Tierkeris, DQ9 (i.e. they fucked up all the good games that would have been better on any of the 4 above systems because those markets wouldn't have forced an SD look for their big titles)
- What forces it, is the players who buy the games on the DS, want simple "fun" stories (i.e. fluff) and you can list a game or 2, but the rest will show my point.
- Good we agreed on a point.

The point is why would you want a jRPG that has no unique control scheme on DS over PSP, WII, 360 or PS3?

I... never said anything about the defense force tag, but if you're going to be an asshole about things, you can go fuck yourself with a pineapple. A big one.

To quickly spank some other monkeys, M00000nblade, DQIX is a significantly better game than DQVIII, at least in my opinion.

Eh, you're right about graphics and sound if all you care about is absolute quality, but are you really trying to force a list war about SD and Story? Most jRPG stories are utter shit, and I don't thing there is any correlation between being on DS and on average having worse storylines.

EDIT: List wars waged and won by duckroll, and now there's nobody to respond to.
