So my Ps4 decided to update itself while I was taking a toilet break. Came back and had lost all of tonights progress.

Like with past games, characters have their strengths and weaknesses.

My only major disappointment storywise so far (I'm just about to start the 3rd dungeon) is how they've handled Ann. She was stellar during the first arc, but they've fallen back on bad tropes with her. Her looks, which should be a source of pain for her, are mainly played up for laughs and it's pretty miserable. Her Social Link is all over the place too, and she comes off even ditzier in those than she does in the main story.

While I agree with you for the most part, I disagree with you on a few points. The jokes about her looks are whatever, but I love how she's able to just take things in stride. I think the "Ann with a vengeance" from arc 1 was cool, but the kind, sincere, goober Ann is even better.

Also her social link is quite solid (so far anyway). It does a good job of balancing drama and humor, and it's fun too. There is a bit too much "telling, not showing" and I think having her be biracial in a way that actually elicited ostracization (like half brazilian) would have been waaaaaaaaay better.

I mean everyone in the game is pretty much mean to the guy. Even MC has a ton of mean responses lol.

He's basically the butt of the joke.

Yes he's the usual token character everyone makes fun of. That's fine. One of them has a different vocabulary, tone and dynamic. It's okay in itself too, it's the usual rivalry that's supposed to be funny.
It's just not well written as that relationship is just there because reasons rather that being organically provoked, and Morgana's language is stronger and more out of place than the others when it's Ryuji.

Ryuji and Ann falling off of a cliff characterization wise by mid game either speaks to how solid the characters that appear later are, or about their motivations feeling a little flimsy and short sighted. Too closely tied to the first palace without much other reason to keep going after their personal stuff is resolved. Ann vaguely wanting to "give everyone courage!" as a constant point being an example.

I'm wondering about a world where
Shiho
takes Ann's place in your party.

You can definitely tell that Hashino and the Persona team write backwards most of the time.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
Beat the game. 94 hours, Normal, around 8 or 9 confidants maxed out, all stats maxed out.

WHAT A GAME. I'll remember it for years to come. I can't believe this came out in the generation of open world, story-lite games. This is a bonafide JRPG without imprisoning itself in genre tropes or traps at all. It takes the already unique premise of Persona 4 and evolves it with dynamic camera angles, better character models and cel shading, better dungeon design, a still-stellar OST, and a cast of characters that feel surprisingly human for an anime-style high school game.

What impressed me the most, though, is how well put together the story is. Every single story beat is connected to an overall theme (which I won't spoil, although the end of the game spells it out for you). Every confidant, heist, piece of classroom trivia, and even incidental dialogue between NPCs is important to the game's message. It's masterfully crafted.

Best Persona game, and certainly the best JRPG, I've played in a long, long time.

I must say though I keep finding it funny that you're being interrogated by Sae, she has to sit there and listen to how you ate this giant burger one day, worked at a store another day, met this crazy hot doctor, etc...

The overall message from the game is pretty good and the finale before the final boss was great. Working on the new game plus now but with English and it's not bad. Only complaint is the voice of mc is better on Japan but arsene voice is pretty solid in both languages.

Does a bond not getting closer mean there's no reason to hang out with that person now?

Those are built into the confidant chains on purpose, there's no way to avoid them until you rank up the
Fortune
Confidant.

So if you want to rank up that link, you have to do them eventually.

Basically when you social link with someone you need to get so many musical notes in the dialogue to advance to the next scene. If you don't, then when you talk with them you will get the "bond won't get closer" dialogue. Hanging out with them now will give you 3 musical notes (2 without the right persona equipped), allowing you to hopefully advance to the next scene next time.

The only exception to this to my knowledge is
Sojiro
who get's locked off early in his Slink until much later in the game.

Game asks me to decide between hanging out with Ryuiji or Makoto. Of course I'll pick Makoto. She's so cute. Also, I chuckled at the loading logo of the MC wearing those Hawaiian flowers.

The game can also provide

B.) Her design is so annoying. Why only go 25% "American" to make a hot blonde, and why make a hot blonde if you want some social outcast while the game actively shows everyone in the 50 mile radius drooling over her?

Because Lisa was a good character, but we did not need a repeat.

I like how chill Ann is with the guys, in contrast to Chie and Yukiko or Yukari that spent half of their lines being mean to the bro character or the boys for no reason. (Although Yosuke at least partially deserves it, but not from them)

But she gets shafted hard once Makoto comes in the picture, she's obviously the writers' favorite. Like P4, this game pays by hiding character development behind S.Links, so if you don't do hers, she's becomes a non-factor.

Ryuji is a shit character and the only reason he's not out of my party is because I invested in his S.Link. Morgana is unnaturally mean to him, however.

She isn't upset that she is pretty and has no reason to be. Her "outcast" status is due to never having a stable group of friends or much family around until now.

Yeah she may be a ditz, but plenty of people in real life men and women are really fucking ditzy. Hell one of my best friends is a total ditz (holy fuck that sounds like something someone says before saying something racist as hell) That doesn't make them bad people or unlikable.

I think they'd be really stretching it to make Ann's character arc revolve her being upset over being too hot.

I must say though I keep finding it funny that you're being interrogated by Sae, she has to sit there and listen to how you ate this giant burger one day, worked at a store another day, met this crazy hot doctor, etc...

My biggest problem with the frame story is Sae's relentlessly arbitrary skepticism. It's blatantly clear all this magic shit is happening from Day 1, and then at random points we cut back to her telling you she doesn't believe you, but there's no rational reason why she wouldn't at that point.

Wait does it happen automatically when in rest mode? ....

If so I am fucked as well lmao

I am not sure. I actually believe it will just download the update and you have to manually run the installer when you get back on.

I am just really confused how the guy lost his progress.

I think the fact that I beat Palaces in one sitting affects my personal opinion of them, but honestly I'm getting a bit tired of how long some of them are. Specifically, Palace 3 and Palace 5 so far.

On Palace 3, the quest to open the vault was very tedious. If it was 1 or 2 locks shorter it may have been decent, but instead it felt very repetitive. On Palace 5, I HATED the quest to find the ID cards. Good god, I backtracked a lot, only to realize that the enemies I needed to beat were always near the door... Also, the dungeon felt unnecessarily long. Thankfully, the different ideas that were implemented on it made it kind of enjoyable later. It doesn't really help that the villains were also kind of bland, on both of them.

My biggest problem with the Palaces is my own expectation I can one-shot them (because I did in P3 and P4) when I often just can't because they're too hard and the game is pretty firm about locking you out of SP to keep you from one-shotting Palaces. Also, random MC death is like FUCKING RAGE MODE time.

I'm sure there are ways to cheese the SP lock, but I'm not really looking into ways to break the game at this point.

Yukari is the absolute worst representation of the Lovers arcana, period. She's just awful. I'd compare Ann closer to Rise than Chie or Yukiko, since they have the same personality, hair style, professional industry, insecurities, appearance, and type of treatment from other characters. And Rise was always pretty chill with the guys. I will give the Ann/Ryuji dynamic credit for being pretty grounded and realistic in comparison to the other games. Two people who've been going to the same schools for a while but were never close friends. They're friendly and they've got some inside jokes, shared experiences, and insight on the other but no over the top School Rumble-esque interactions.

Morgana's m'lady deal is annoying, but it's getting kinda funny as I rank up Ann (she's always in my party, so I need those boosts whether I have issue with some of her writing or not.) I'm just imagining him in my school bag fucking seething as I hang out and grab lunch alone with her.

Palace 6 is great in terms of atmosphere and music, it's especially refreshing coming from the bland looking palace 5 with its annoying 20 second track on loop.

Ok, it's final dungeon ranking time.

6 > 2 > 1 > 4 > 3 > 5 > 7

The
casino was by far my favorite, maybe because it has the full circle moment at the end. And Akechi is there.

I loved the
cruise ship's vibe and the story that goes down there, but THOSE CORRIDORS! "This door is locked." Go back and turn into a mouse. Crawl through vent. Fight guys. Walk through more corridors. Arrrrrrgfjdkghlfjgh

I'm close to the end of the game and have a question regarding a certain enemy super close to the end:
I'm at the last Angel who guards the Holy Grail. How am I supposed to kill him? I kill the two demons as fast as I can, but one of them always gets a heal out and heals him to full health. Am I overlooking something?

Well that was a roller coaster of emotions. I thought I got the bad ending for a second there. I had an idea of what was going on, mentioned (here), but I still got caught off guard.

Anyways, that Casino palace is by far my favorite so far.

There is no parallel world Metaverse where Morgana is worse than Teddie.

And I didn't even see Morgana's infatuation as much of a big deal as some others are. Dude brings valuable experience and insight to the team. I actually like hearing what he has to say when the team is at an impasse.

Agreed. So many Morgana haters on here. I don't love him, but I don't hate him. On a team, you'd want someone like him being able to dispense good information and experience.

You can
one shot the healing guys with the curse insta-kill skills, that was the best way that I found.

I used dark skills to knock down the helper angels and then used morgana's miracle punch to crit and knock down the main angel then used an all out attack personally

I still really like Ann's character and place in the party overall. She's pretty genuine in most of her dialogue and I like what she has to say a lot of the time.

It's just the weird cringy scenes they keep putting her in that are just kind of annoying considering her back-story. The Yusuke stuff was just kinda weird and not necessary *right* after an arc that went through Ann's tough times at school.

I suck at this game and I need help. I'm playing on normal.

I'm on the first palace. All of my dudes run out of SP so fast and I can't go forward because I can't heal and I can't afford any damn medicine. I heard you were supposed to try to finish the dungeons in 1 days and I'm about to go onto day 3. Any tips?

I'm playing Persona for the first time and I just finished the first palace on normal. As such, I am no expert. But - here is what got me through:

1. Pay attention to your character's level and make sure that the level of your persona is very close. For example - I advanced my character to level 9, but was still using a level 6 Arsene and struggling - especially against higher level enemies that would often one shot all 4 of us. I was able to acquire a Level 9 Berith which immediately made a huge difference in the amount of damage I deal per turn, and often allows me to survive the higher level attacks.

2. It's amazing how many healing items you pick up just by playing the game - especially 20 HP food items, etc. By using these (and making sure to buy a few 50 HP and 100 HP items from the clinic in the backstreets near where you live), I would often extend my turns against tougher enemies and recover HP afterwards without having to waste as much SP on "auto heal."

3. I constantly checked every room in the Palace for items that could be sold for a few hundred yen. For example - many of the vases you see in the rooms in the Palace drop random items that you can sell later (like broken swords and broken shields, etc.). I probably ended up with about 5,000 yen total from these items - which then gives you enough money to buy several 50 HP items or a few 100 HP items.

Even with this - I had to go back to the Palace three times to clear it. Several people have said that the dungeons get easier though in terms of having many more options available to level-up your characters beforehand.

My main issue with Morgana is that I expected it to be a "her" rather than a "him". A male, kind of pervert, full of himself mascot character that tries to act big despite his size, is really cliche and makes Morgana rather boring. I didn't pay attention to most of the pre release stuff about P5 and I was sure that Morgana was a female name, so it certainly betrayed my expectations... Would make the character a lot more interesting. It's a cool design but he's pretty much my least favourite of the group.

I ended up going with the tried and true Persona 4 method. Fusing Yoshitsune and going to town with Hassou Tobi.

"Kind of pervert" is kind of harsh considering he's got a crush on Ann and he doesn't creep on any of the girls.

I think about Teddie accompanying the Persona 4 protagonist 100% of the time like Morgana does for the P5MC, and I shudder. Morgana is so much more agreeable.

Ok, it's final dungeon ranking time.

I'd probably go:

2 > 6 > 4 > 1 > 3 > 7 > 5

The ending sequence before the boss in Palace #2 really elevates it for me.

I'm just going to say, while the older Persona games' costumes and BGM are fine examples of DLC, something rubs me the wrong way about Orpheus and Izanagi being available as DLC Personas. Even if I wouldn't have expected to be able to fuse them.

Loving the game, just saw that in the DLC list and it annoyed me.

Yusuke's arc really struck a chord with me as an aspiring artist in my high school years.

When I was in high school I tried to get more into the fine arts and develop my skills, I had no idea to what that would pertain, so when I went to a class and there was a nude model I was pretty surprised. And when I told my high school friends about it at the time, they acted like how you would expect immature high schoolers would.

So even though it feels so weird playing the game as an adult... it brought back some memories of being an immature teen. So some of the scenes really made me laugh, and I grew to like Yusuke a lot as a character. He's very three-dimensional.

I don't get it. I have never had my Playstation turn off a game I am playing for an update. Or did you put it in Rest Mode?

I think it went into rest-mode (it's set to a fairly short timer) and decided to not give a shit that a game was loaded. I've turned off auto-install now, to ensure it doesn't happen again.

Thank god for fast-forward.
