I've only just completed the third dungeon, so I can't make sweeping comments on which game is better than which, but I am happy that, despite gameplay trappings being the same, the game's attempting to do extremely different things than 3 or 4. It actually makes it somewhat hard to compare to 4. The stories are just extremely different.

The only real observation that I have so far is that 4 really felt like these kids who had to do all this supernatural stuff they didn't want to do, while 5 is about these kids who really go out of their way to do supernatural stuff even though they don't have to. As someone mentioned before, the Phantom Thieves is the primary subject for the group, it's what all their discussions revolve around. In P4 they talked a lot about the murders, but it only really reached a head when a new person got kidnapped.

This isn't really a bad thing (yet), but it's an extraordinarily different feel from 4. Right now, my love for the concept of "phantom thieves" and picaresque elements is balancing out my preference for the more laid back atmosphere of 4's cast. It's a trade-off, essentially.

Because.... Ryuji, Ann and Joker want to actually help people and change society....

And they wanna help people because they wanna end their suffering and other people suffering...

Yu and the gang didnt wanna change society.

Goddamn the cover system is seriously jank sometimes. Just got ambushed and killed because it made me leap to a completely different warp point than the one I'd selected.

Something like this happened to me in the 7th palace.
Went from ready to ambush an enemy in a non-mouse area to getting stuck in a mouse-only area and then getting ambushed myself. I was freaking out at the TV but luckily your party automatically tries to run as soon as they get in a battle as mice, and the escape chance worked this time.

I just realized P4 came out on PS2!

Are you telling me there was no big Persona game on PS3? Seems like the series is more popular than ever before and that it will continue to grow tremendously if there's a P6.

BTW, why is this only on Sony consoles? Is it a partnership or just convenience for the developer?

Also, I see P4 was remastered or something for VITA.... Is it reasonable to expect it to come to PS4? And are P3 and P2 outdated by today, or are they worth going back to too?

I sort of would like a collection for PS4, but I imagine that's not an easy undertaking

There was absolutely a big Persona game on PS3. It's called Persona 5. (I'll see myself out now...)

I wouldn't expect P4G to be re-released on PS4 anytime soon, but I don't have anything to back that up besides "eh, it seems too soon after Persona 5." The PS2 versions of P3 are a little tougher to play than P4 because of the AI-controlled party members, but otherwise it's fine. P3P retains most of the gameplay improvements of P4, but some people don't like it because it cuts the animated cutscenes in favour of static images. The Persona 2 duology is weird in that Innocent Sin is on PSP and isn't too bad to play (though I'd argue it's worse than P1P just because the battle speed-up options aren't as good), but Eternal Punishment is only available as a PS1 classic and has a different localization and everything, so it's probably the worst in the series to play today. That said, I haven't actually played Eternal Punishment myself, so I could be wrong there.

I'd say it's better than P4G too - P4G was honestly kind of a mixed bag in terms of additions, and pretty much every positive addition in P4G is present in P5 too.

Makes sense, since nearly all of the bad additions are story-related, and nearly all of the good additions are gameplay mechanics.

Everyone who praises P3's plot as unique has never watched Evangelion.
It's literally the exact same thing albeit with a different ending.

For me:

Gameplay and presentation is miles better than P3 and P4.

Characters are worse than P4, better than P3

Music, I'm unsure of. Better than P3. Probably worse than P4.

Story is worse than P4, better than P3.

It also adds some things that it doesn't need to, which bring it down a bit. The framing device is awful and frustrating. The number of times Morgana tells you to go to sleep is ridiculous. I also have serious issues with some of the narrative parts too.

At best, I'd say it stands level with P4, but we'll see how I feel when I finish it in English. I've changed my mind on some things since playing it in a language I can actually understand, hahaha.

I really don't see why the framing device is awful. It's a nice setup for the game and since it tells you that there is a traitor, you are most likely wondering all the time if someone you know fits the bill. The scenes with Sae during the beginning of each S.Link also explain how the Phantom Thieves were percieved on a larger scale by the police.

I think I prefer P5 over P4 and P3, but I thought P4 was the most emotionally impactful out of all three games.

Because.... Ryuji, Ann and Joker want to actually help people and change society....

And they wanna help people because they wanna end their suffering and other people suffering...

Yu and the gang didnt wanna change society.

You can be sure that at least a part of P4's cast would have become Phantom Thieves as well if they were given the option, especially Kanji and Naoto.
Naoto's arc is even more or less expanded on with Sae anyway.

I can't be the only one who thinks that Persona 5 is better on all fronts than Persona 3/4 can I? Feeling really lonely here.

They all are amazing games.

P5 improves on alot and is incredibly good...

But... I have yet to hear a song as good as Your Affection or P3's catchy dorm theme.

Yeah, Persona 5 is my favorite and it's the best yet, I still have issues with the juxtaposition it has with tone and approach to storytelling (that breathes inherent to many JRPG concepts). A part of me still wants writing effective to the level of making me consider the themes a while after completion like Vampire Bloodlines or even Night in the Woods more recently.

The stealth mechanics also come off as an afterthought in some instances with enemies rep-spawning immediately after defeat making you get more alert for no reason and enemies that spawn in a load area right in front of the door making it impossible for the player to get out of sight before getting caught. The level design also essentially forces you to combat many enemies regardless of "Thieves" aspect. I love the concept, but the execution is spotty.

That said, it's a really good Persona with the best cast from the series yet.

Yeah, this is pretty much the major difference, but both are essentially about changing the world around you. 4 was about making society more discerning past surface level appearance and being comfortable with who they were. 5 is about making society aware and active against injustice and oppression. If you want to include 3, it's ultimately about making people aware that life isn't worth throwing away.

However, yeah, the cast's goals are entirely different and, like I said, that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's just a little more direct in P5. It's actually kinda funny: P4, to me, was about nostalgia: returning things to "how they were". Making people accept what they are. P5 is more about rejecting the current situation. It's almost anti-nostalgic.

It couldn't have all been just luck!

*Somehow saying you recruited a fortuneteller without sounding ridiculous*

You've been pretty active these last few months... almost as if you've been drinking coffee the entire time.

You couldn't have prepared all that coffee on your own, who taught you how to brew it!?

This is probably my favorite Persona game.

It certainly has flaws, as does every game, but the reason I enjoy it so much or can talk about all these great things I really like about the game is that the good parts obscure or overwhelm the bad parts. Which is why I generally don't talk about the bad parts or focus on them because there is so much good there that I'm too busy talking about that stuff.

There are still things that I would murder an entire planet of intelligent life for that many other people have brought up (better LGBT representation, more focused characterization so we don't get awkward Ann sexuality, romance having actual tangible changes on the game outside gameplay systems, more interactions between Confidants so it feels like they exist outside their relationship with you, etc.) but the reasons for those flaws are also extremely varied such as budgetary concerns/engine concerns over creating myriad scenes and systems for the choices that people make for their romances or decisions in Confidant Links to JAPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN for not being able to treat a gay character not as a joke to them simply not caring.

So instead I talk about how much fun I'm having because the things that can take me out of the game aren't taking me out on the same level as other people that also recognize those problems.

I won't lie, I completely forgot about the "someone sold you out" line at the beginning of the game. So I actually wasn't looking for a traitor at all. I was actually busier trying to figure out something completely different, which ended up resolving in a rather unexpected way late in the game.
I'd been wondering during all the interrogation room scenes if we were somehow still in the casino palace.

It's a waste of time that serves no constructive purpose. Every time it pulls me put of the game for one those stupid interrogation scenes it completely ruins my immersion.

I don't care how Sae percieves thw thieves. And that's ignoring that she doesn't actually provide any fucking insight whatsoever.

Honestly, it's really hard for me to tell how I truly feel about a game until years after I've played it. Even with P4, I don't think I realized how much I really loved it until I went back to it a few years after playing it the first time. Same goes for a lot of games I now look back on fondly.

Comparisons to other games are frivolous, these days I tend to just focus on individual strengths and weaknesses of certain games. Why this one portion of a game affected me in this way.

For the record, I enjoy the interrogation framing device. It's corny as fuck, but i'm a sucker for that kind of framing. It just fits so well with the theme. I wish Sae's script was a little better, though. So far, I've seen it as just cementing the idea that the social links aren't really just friends, but literal accomplices in a grander scheme.

Man...these awakened personas so far have been terrible looking. At least Ryuji's looks somewhat cool, but I'm going to miss his pirate persona.

Persona 4 had the same problem. I feel like P3 was the only one with good looking ones.

The framing device is awesome just for shit like

"Hey MC, here's a sandwich I found in a dollar bin"
YOU HAVE AWAKENED THE SANDWICH ARCANA
*flash forward to Sae*
"We found crumbs on your uniform. WHOSE BEEN FEEDING YOU?! IF YOU DON'T TALK I WILL DROP A BOMB ON YOUR FAMILY"

^^ Eternal Punishment localization is not as bad as many would thik. There are some things from Revelations: Persona and voice acting is weird, because Tatsuya sounds bad, but the other main characters have really good VA, san some dialogues where I blame the director. It have an amazing VA for JOKER, so that alone is enough reason to play the game.

Yea now I look forward to seeing how she'll react when I get a new confidant lol

8/17, just got Fortune Rank 7 ability:
It's SO good! Ryuji was at Rank 9 and wasn't going to rank up if I hung out with him, but Fortune was like "Nah I got u"
and bumped up Ryuji to be ready to rank up. With the abundance of money you get in this game (I'm at about 400k right now without grinding), it's basically like getting to hang with two people in one block of time.

Havent beat the game yet... but pretty sure Sae is an example of another adult with big issues.

She's sure as heck doing more than Dojima "I didn't see that coming" from P4.

If there needs to be a meme from P5 it should be three panel images with a mundane person, the interrogation from Sae, and the I am thou screen. Too lazy to make something like that though lol.

I was always amused at Sae's reaction since she would probably be super underwhelmed if she knew that a grade schooler taught me about guns.

In any case,
it does serve a constructive purpose in that it helps to set up the reveal of the traitor and its a better solution for the game's "branching point" than the previous games. It also made the opening scene possible and for that alone I am very grateful.

Why were people saying Tower confidant is useless? It starts by giving you a gun ability that's pretty much a free almighty one more (unless I'm missing something) and then it gives you one that can grant you some decent free damage at the beginning of an ambush lol. Seems pretty good to me.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
I have come to the conclusion that this game probably has my favorite soundtrack of all time. It's so consistently good it's almost unfair.

I love all the tracks but Beneath the Mask is my favorite by far. The moment it came on I put the controller down and jammed to it for a few minutes.

I think the official lyric is "At Poe's Masquerade". But like with all persona games, I'm basically going to go with whatever I hear first. Like Your Affection's classic line: "To Kick a Puppy".

Naoto and Kanji both suffer from society in the same way the P5 cast does. Naoto feels pressured to pose as a man since she feels (and according to P5 she's right) like she won't be respected in a society dominated by men. Kanji's arc is all about masculinity, its perception in society and trying to break away from the idea that you have to be aggressive and loud to be a man.

Lol every dungeon has to have the bullshit enemy with the bullshit attack

I just lost at least half an hour of progress because (spoiler 5th dungeon)
fucking ign told me that the Corporobo MDL-? was weak to nuclear, which fucking wasn't, so i could never bring down all the enemies at the same time and the little shits that were with that one raped my party with that bullshit triple attack. It would be probably worse than the anubis if that enemy wasn't weak to fire.

Persona 5 |OT2| Let's not do this today

During the month of July I had so much free time that I watched 2 dvds... and returned them both on time. So thrilling...

I have watched almost every DVD but one so far because there were instances where there was no S-Link available (at the start of dungeon 3). Now I have one and couldn't return it when a story beat brings me to Central Street or in the evening Morgana gives its "You are tired! It would be a shame if you wouldn't go to bed." sentence.
