Persona 5 Review Thread

They didn't do it for Persona 4. They added Marie (shudder) and some extra activities and a few more mechanics

I think they did it for persona 3 because everyone wanted to date Shinji. Shinji is top tier

It's a shame though. I liked the female route in P3 as it added a new perspective for me on the story.

It depends if they see the development time as worth it

I think for story reason I don't want to mention P5 as a construct seems to be more suited to the addition of a FemMC rather than having more stuff to fill additional months with. Not that those things cannot be adjusted just judging by what the current game is. The 1 single issue I would see is the cost of the quite numerous anime cutscenes that explicitly depict the male protagonist.

Not at all. All the footage in the IGN one is just from the first two months, it's very careful to avoid spoilers. The Gamespot one outright spoils the main antagonists of the game if you look closely enough and shows an unrevealed dungeon, and bosses. It's ridiculous if you ask me.

Yep fuck that Gamespot review. Idk wth they were thinking. They legit spoil ridiculous amounts of the game. I haven't even played the game but it's blatantly obvious to piece together what's going on. The ACG and IGN review were so good at avoiding spoilers then fucking Gamespot had to fuck it all up.

Haven't heard anything yet. Does he have another Persona game in him or do you think he'll pass the reins?
There's the new game with the new company that's going on with Atlus, so I guess it may depend on how much it interferes with him working on that?

A female protagonist was in the planning stages of P3 and one of the feature that didn't make the cut in the original release. The portable version also didn't have to worry about issues like animated cutscenes and other stuff.

I've read a lot of people saying you can't. Morgana preventing you or something. Just going off of that.

Would be pleasantly surprised if it's not like that.

Not really. After leaving dungeons when you get back home, it's night and Morgana tells you you should get some rest because you've been battling etc.

You can go out at Tokyo at night, there's social links at night even.

The former is the problem. I had to facepalm when it showed up. The latter is, as you point out, actually something that happens in Japan. One of the most popular TV MCs right now is an example of the latter, in fact.

The latter is an Okama, a normal part of Japanese nightlife.

But yeah, the former is really gross and I mashed the dialogue forward button as hard as I could through the whole incident and avoided them like the plague after.

I was joking honestly. Shinji is still top tier though

I am beyond excited! Any chance Amazon delivers my TYH edition a little early??

I'm not sure how they are going to top the characters in P4, but sounds like everything is amazin'.

Will be my first Persona, and I'm going in pretty much blind! Nice to read that this might be a long JRPG, as I can get lost in it for a few months.

I'm glad I stopped myself from watching it when I saw the "May contain spoilers" text...I had a feeling that there would be big spoilers in there and didn't want to take the risk.

We who played the Japanese version already knew this was destined for great scores ^_^

One of the best games I've ever played. It makes P4 seem like a pile of puke and that's one of my favourite games of all time.

I have not read a single thing and am keeping it that way but Yosuke was ignorant/juvenile towards Kanji in regards to his sexuality in Persona 4 yet there weren't too many qualms about that altogether. I don't think it's going to make or break this purchase for me.

You're in for a treat. Persona is a really great series. Mileage may vary, but I really loved Persona 3 & 4. Hope you dig it. I am confident I will. :)

This fucking year...

Guess I'll be picking it up after finshing Andromeda.

Yeah, It's absolutely unreal.

Yakuza 0, Nioh, Nier: Automata, Zelda: BoTW, Horizon, and now Persona 5.

I've never seen so many great games released in such a short time frame from each other. My wallet cries but It's worth it just for the experiences to play these games.

Yeah I wish I had done the same. But I assumed it'd be small things like early game stuff. Not the fucking end game stuff and final bosses.

The funny thing is I was on a total blackout for this game up until a few days ago. Then I broke and started watching a bunch of videos, previews and even twitch streams for it. And NONE of them spoiled anything beyond the first dungeon, and here comes an official review from a major gaming publication and that's the thing that spoils me.

Anybody know if they're releasing a strategy guide? I can't seem to find anything other than the Japanese version guide.

Um I played half of 3FES (loved what I played) and skipped 4. Will jumping directly into this hamper my enjoyment of 4 if I ever go back?

If you liked what you played of Persona 3, nah. You'll definitely notice the improvements that Persona 5 made to the formula tho, just like how people noticed the improvements Persona 4 made to 3.

P4G only has good music and some funny scenes for me after playing 5.

There's nothing in 5 that I think is worse than 4.

If you can identify the bits of FES you enjoyed it'll make answering this question precisely an easier job.
  • Randomized, multi-floor dungeons are back but not the only dungeon in the game.
  • The story is driven by the grounded motivations of the decidedly human cast of characters.
  • The timer to get the social stuff done is much less tight than it is in FES.
  • Deep comparisons without spoilers get harder as you understand.

Ugh, I'm sorry you got spoiled :( Gamspot should know better, even with the spoiler warning you would think they would keep the video to footage from early in the game or stuff already seen in the trailers.

As far as I understand it, okama is a bad term to the community there. Josouka is the more acceptable one, I believe. However, LGBTQ terminology in Japan has been in flux the last 10 years or because of awareness and the like so I don't know know how different it has grown since I left.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I dunno but overall I liked P4 over P3.

So I'm guessing: P5 > P4 > P3 > P2 > P1?

Do we have any reviewers that reviewed Persona 3 and Persona 4 as well around release? I thought it might be interesting to look at those reviews consecutively if so.

A little late here but is the only difference between this for PS3 and PS4, 720p vs 1080p?

I still don't own a PS4 and I might just get this for PS3 unless there's a reason to wait.

Not much of a difference besides resolution and faster loading times on PS4.

PS3 is the base version, you should be fine playing it.

I'm not really a fan of "okama" because it's uses can get so messy. I've seen it used for gay men and cross dressers and trans women, and those three things are totally different categories.

I did! I could get copies of those reviews put up somewhere if you care.

I'd like to talk about those issues but I'll save that conversation for the Spoiler thread. The only thing I'd like to say is that everyone during high school and middle school is kind of susceptible to actually suffer some of the things that happen in Persona 5, and that's the kind of things Atlus put in the game... it's fascinating and fucked up at the same time.
Yeah. It'd be fine if the P5 cast got hit with the brunt of the consequences of homophobic bullying, if they participated in it. Like a gay character called them out on it and your MC could call that stuff out too. You're supposed to be a Robin Hood type for those attacked by people in positions of power/society/adults! With all of these social problems that these deliquents and outcasts are facing head on, it would have been amazing to have a full on gay character and romance that would show the homophobic underbelly of society. As it stands, it sounds rather mean to straight up ignore them or acknowledge something deeper. (If I'm missing something in the game, feel free to post in spoilers or PM me. Definitely going to join the Spoiler thread when I finish.)

If he was willing to do another I'd be happy with that. Hopefully he has someone in mind for his replacement if he ever leaves.

Yeah. I've generally just used western terms since I never really understood what Okama meant and also heard about it being offensive at some point.

Cool. Just found some comparison screenshots and I can definitely see a difference but not one I imagine would bring down the experience on PS3 too much.

Yeah. That's part of it and I've also heard it's considered derogatory now. There are more accurate terms in use in Japan.

I have the impression he may have passed the torch already. The way he spoke about the subject in his toco toco interview seemed pretty final, almost like a "we're moving on to newer things now" kinda deal.
I hope whoever inherits Persona after him puts their own spin on the series.
