Persona 5 Review Thread

Do we have any reviewers that reviewed Persona 3 and Persona 4 as well around release? I thought it might be interesting to look at those reviews consecutively if so.

I know for Game Informer, the reviewer gave P4 (original) an 8, while he gave P5 a 9.25.

I only played about 10 hours of persona 4 golden but I remember enjoying it. I am not sure why I quit but I think I will delve deeper into that game before I buy this one. Any chance this gets a port to a handheld? Don't think the wife will put up with this game.

Can I take a wife in this game? For some reason she likes that.

So as someone who didn't like P3 or 4, there's no reason I should be looking at this, right?

Or is it a significantly different game?

Still turned-based.
Still waifus.
Still Japanese High School.
Still demon fusion and dungeon crawling.
Still planning an entire calendar of extracurriculars.

If none of this clicked with you in the previous entries then P5 will not grab you, either.

Why you didn't like those? I've only played a couple of hours of Persona 2 when I was young, and several hours of Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne and really liked it but never finished.

I want a really good JRPG, the last I've enjoyed was Ni No Kuni. I've played FFXV and didn't like it at all. I'm sure I could dig into P5, I'm sure I'll like it but I want more than a good 7/10 JRPG to spend $60...
It's getting real praise but I have this feeling that it won't be anywhere near close to that for me.

hot hot hanuman-on-man action
hearing that the story and cast are so good means this is a day 1

what are the difficult levels? is there one that basically makes the game an adventure game / vn?

It will most likely come between this and Destiny 2 as my GOTY this year.

Granted, right now it is Horizon. Curious to see if P5 can topple it, and I feel it will because Persona 4 is in my top 3 games of all time.

Apparently there are a few points where it dips ever so slightly from 30fps = namely in the city when it's crowded and a later dungeon. (FWIR)

Boost Mode would get rid of these dips, in theory.

It can't even hit a solid 30 on PS4 with that modest detail level? And we're stuck with this engine for the rest of the gen? :/

Atlus needs to just use UE4 like the rest of the Japanese devs with common sense do. I mean they used Gamebryo for Catherine and that worked out fine.

The game looks gorgeous, runs at a mostly stable 30fps, and it's 1080p. It's a turn based game too. There is no need for Atlus to move away from this engine.

Especially since it's their in house engine too, there's no reason for them to license UE4 if they don't need it. If they did build it on UE4, I'm sure it'd look and perform exactly the same.

The SMT Switch title is confirmed for UE4.

Also: P5 was on PS3, which couldn't have run UE4.

Why does it feel like Jim's complaint is more about not being able to play the game portable?

Laura primarily thought that it was a great game, just not groundbreaking, and the portable comment was connecting to some pacing (social life aspects I think) that she felt maybe wouldn't have been as bothersome on a portable version due to possibly being able to do dialogue sections in short life gaps.

She does least mention earlier about the dialogue tree being a bit wonky.
