Persona 5 Won't Be Out In North America Until February 2017

Good news to P5. Most anticipated NeoGaf game 3 (now 4) years running. If my calculations are right and TLG releases this year, it will be NeoGaf's most anticipated game thus far. and it will most likely #1 given the rate of the past Top 10:
2014 (#8)
2015 (#6)
2016 (#2)
Given that the game will be a known quantity by then and anything someone wants to know about it will be readily available, I have a feeling it'll backslide some.

I don't mind playing the Japanese version if you can change language from Japanese to English. As for voice acting I don't mind if they are Japanese as long as there are subtitles.

That's still an excellent turn around time (5 months instead of 6 which was pretty standard and it's getting common to see 9 again (mostly from big publishers for some reason).

This is the cost of getting Yakuza and 7th Dragon localized, people.

Enjoy.

(Anyone expecting a simultaneous worldwide/within 2 months release had no idea what they were talking about. Atlus, effectively being Sega's entire localization department now, is probably running a total workload twice as large as they've ever handled before. If not bigger.)

John posted on Twitter about the possibility of dual audio

Oh phew that's a relief, for a second there I thought there were Bandai Namco and would just skip the English dub altogether.

Joking aside, it's good to see they're at least trying to get dual audio this time.

The point is that they aren't incapable.

I definitely don't doubt they aren't incapable, but I also have this underlying suspicion that with P5's somewhat abnormal development that Atlus USA miiiiiiight have only just gotten the necessary materials from the Japan branch to begin localization. I have nothing to back this up, of course, but it feels like there's a definite discrepancy between the two branches. I was hoping that with the delay announced at TGS last year that the Japan branch might have been able to hand off some stuff to their USA counterparts to begin some English localization then, but I highly doubt that now with the NA release date being 8 months away.

A lot of fans wouldn't mind it. Not me, but it seems to be overall sentiment among core persona fans
who don't get that Atlus is trying to sell this to a wider audience than them

On another note, it's weird to me that they went with "steal your heart" after "Love is over". The marketing has shades of Catherine everywhere, which may be what they want to invoke (style, scandal, player choice/connection,"strange" blonde haired blue eyed girl with pigtails etc)

I can't wait to see if the game actually matches and to see if the group dynamic and MC "personality" is more like P3 or P4

99% of Japanese games won't have English subtitles. There's very few exceptions. I wouldn't count on it.

Down to import the Asia Edition with Eng Subs if that ever happens. Then buy the NA version to play it in English. xD

I heavily doubt that; I still think they actively started localizing Persona 5 sometime in Q1 of 2016. I have nothing to back that up, either, but we'll find out soon enough...

I still think the most important point regarding this are the other projects Atlus USA needed to work on localizing with their relatively small team. Recently:

1. Odin Sphere Leifthrasir
2. Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse
3. Tokyo Mirage Sessons #FE
4. Yakuza 0
5. Hatsune Miku: Project Diva X
6. King of Fighters XIV

Possibly more. With all those projects on their plate, it would naturally get in the way of localizing Persona 5. I guess they found it wouldn't make business sense to prioritise the localization of that one game over a number of others (or any other business reason that lead to the same result), but what makes it weird is how long ago Persona 5 was announced for localization and how it'll end up being released in NA after a bunch of projects that were announced afterwards.

Putting aside my own feelings of wanting to play it asap, it doesn't feel right. It feels like a hugely missed opportunity, because some of the hype will absolutely be dissipated for the NA target audience of this game when it has been released somewhere else 5 months prior. The awareness of Persona (and of media as a whole since 2008) has gotten significantly bigger since Persona 4; I can't believe that this delayed launch won't have an effect on initial sales. Perhaps it'll be pretty minimal, though.

Given that the game will be a known quantity by then and anything someone wants to know about it will be readily available, I have a feeling it'll backslide some.

On that same basis, sufficiently high praise (I'm hoping) for the game could also push expectations fuether than ever.

Doomsday vision imo is that they start releasing a bunch of supplementary stuff before/around the time of the NA launch. "Eh..I'll read this fan translated manga adaption instead of play an 80 hour game. eh..Isn't that OVA coming out in a couple of months anyway?"

I hadn't fully considered all of those titles. This is definitely a highly possible reason for the 8 month wait. Or maybe it's a result of a combination of different factors, including this.

...I think I've gone past depression to detached curiosity now lol. It's weird, I was relatively fine with the Summer 2016 delay at TGS last year, but this one? It's put a definite damper on my excitement levels for the game atm.

Atlus can make things (somewhat) right by releasing a public demo. I need something. Not that I expect it to happen.

Somebody going to make a thread or investigate what has been going on with Atlus or what? Because clarification would be nice about now instead of this constant back and forth.

Atlus Faithful email went out too moments ago.
Man, they never mail me in time.

Audiences can overlap. And I think they will.
Established IP vs New One? Strong Woman versus Colorful Waifus and Husbandos?

We should get some more info on that during E3 as well. They said they would reveal the release window at E3.
Or this morning.

So I guess it says something about the series's popularity as a spinoff that it no longer has Shin Megami Tensei branding on the box art. Thoughts on that?

Ironically, both the original Persona: Revelations and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment were released without the SMT either. It came back with Persona 3 and 4. Came back for the P1 and P2 Duology's PSP versions.

Honestly P1 and P2 Duology are more fitting of the SMT than either P3 and P4.

Man this is just so upsetting. Persona is one of my favourite gaming series and yet I can't even feel remotely excited for it because I'm not even sure the game will make it to Europe.

It's a complete non-answer.
When it comes to the EU you should expect that from Sega Europe/ Atlus USA.
It basically boils down to "We'll look into it" without ever doing anything.
I don't blame John by the way.
He is probably doing what he can for us but it is still pretty frustrating.

While this has nothing to do with Atlus USA, this reminds me about KH Birth by Sleep's European release and the question whether there would be FIGS dubs for the game. Someone answered "We'll look into it" (don't quote me on this, but I believe it was Hashimoto) and of course the game came out without a full localization. However, it was rather obvious that they actually looked into it - at least, the German script was apparently even written with dubbing in mind as it was mostly in sync with the mouth movements of the English version.

The point of this is that you shouldn't jump to conclusions, but I guess it's harder to do that in this case.

Awesome. PS3 version still confirmed.

I'll move on eventually, but I've been saving this as my final farewell PS3 game for awhile now.

Should have been PS3's final farewell when it was still relevant Winter 2014 should have been the date honestly. That was about the time PS3 fell off, maybe even earlier. Hell P4 was released in 2008 when the PS3 was barely anywhere.

I wonder how much of the Sega Atlus merger and the PS4 port were part of this games delays.

I was more talking about Sega Europe than Atlus USA in my post :p
Like I said I,m sure John is doing what he can for us but I,m really tired of the same song and dance.
Nothing from the recent developments from Sega Europe fills me with any confidence that we will see P5 around the same time as the US.
I think most EU Atlus fans are just tired of this uncertainty and want to have some clear answers.
Even though I pre-ordered the US copy, I will buy the EU version when it comes out just to show that there is some support for these titles in the EU.
I do wonder if other EU Atlus fans will do the same or if they will just import it and call it a day.
I guess Atlus can always blame low sales if that happens.......

It's really disappointing if they won't be able to get dual audio out. There has been enough of a clamor for it that they can't just now be realizing that there's a certain audience for it. Honestly this bugs me more than the 2017 release, even as someone who will be playing completely with the English dub were it even a choice to have the original VA in there.
