first online game: sliding tackle ball played gets me sent off and the opponent slides into me from behind... yellow?

Yeah the refs are dodgy with slide tackles.

Maybe I've just played bad players, but I've not needed to do a slide tackle in any of my games, a well-timed hold of A is all I use - I'd suggest you try that too, sliding isn't worth it in my opinion.

Was it a penalty? New rules say it won't be a red card unless it's violent conduct.

To be fair the ref AI has to be one of the most tricky things to get right, no game has ever got it spot on.

Microsoft just gave me a refund for this game even though I purchased digitally.

Good on them. I could write a whole list of things that are just terrible about this game. The game play can be rewarding, everything around it is atrocious.

No idea why this game is held in such regard. FIFA is miles apart. There's some nice ideas in this, but it fails in so many places.

Each to their own. I personally like em both and usually end up getting both at some point during the season.

Because the gameplay is better. Fifa can't hold a candle to the actual on pitch experience.

Dunno, they both have their pros an cons in gameplay. The gameplay in PES is good, when there's no lag and you play as a 5* team. But meh, the co-op side of it really needs a re-think, some terrible decisions.

I hate the player switching, its awful
Yeah this is by far my biggest complaint with the game, the player switching is dreadful. Plenty of times it doesn't switch to the nearest player to the ball when through balls are played (even if you try to switch manually), and if there's a deflection / rebound, it often won't switch to your player standing near the ball who could intercept it or shoot.

Even more annoyingly, I don't remember any of these issues last year. Player switching was fine in 2017, I have no idea why they've changed it, especially since there are zero improvements to it, only regressions.

You can switch manually by flicking the right stick in the direction of the player you want to choose, but I've found it difficult to reliably target the correct player in fast paced games.

Also noticed a bug in team management / game plan - if you edit the positions of your players, and move a CB back 5 steps, they'll get auto-switched with your goalkeeper and end up in net while your keeper plays outfield. I only just caught it otherwise I'd have played a half with Karius at centre back :lol

I can just FIFA 17/18 just fine (1920/1080 or 1500/1000 resolution, high settings and 60fps for my laptop) but PES is way too much, I can't even load a game. Shame, I'll have to play it only on my big PC. The PS4 demo was lots of fun (but the UI is meh compared to FIFA).

I'm wondering how good is the career mode compared to FIFA and how much it is moddable. Need to dig into it.

Why does he wear the mask!?
Do you use RS flicks to change player at all? I find it a lot better than LB when you're going for an interception etc.

You just flick it in the direction of the player you want to change to.

Yep, still random as fuck. Slow too, which makes chasing loose balls hard.

Player match report system is either broken or really harsh, I could score a hat trick and still get a < 7.5 rating.

This was the case for the last PES (2012) I played also.

I can never fucking get my players to do a forward run with L1 + right stick. The blue arrow will appear above them but they won't make the run. It's driving me insane.

Spent a good few hours with the full game, I don't know about anyone else but I just can't get into it and I'm someone who has played the series since the PS2 days but held off the last two releases.

I tried the online beta and the SP demo and really enjoyed both, it felt full flowing and I scored quite a few goals. This full release feels restrictive, like there are invisible walls or something. To me it feels a different game to the demo and I have had this issue before, I think it was with PES 2015. When I tried the demo for this I had to buy the game but it doesn't feel representative of that demo.

The player switching for example, I have tried the different options but it feels frustrating with each one, the players are not being selected correctly. Another thing is the animations, it's more fluid than ever before overall however at times it seems to take a age for a player to transition from one animation to another and it can piss me off when I'm trying to score, cross a ball or win a tackle and a player isn't reacting the way I want it to.

Shooting feels different, through balls do too and both seem a step back from those earlier demos. I'm disappointed as I was hoping this game would tide me over until the big winter releases and all I can think of now is should i trade it in for some store credit.

You can set it to manual, gives much more control.

Oh. I don't play online in either. It's a terrible experience in both

Unless you play FIFA on manual controls, in which case it isn't.
Yeah that's Not something I agree with at all. Don't like fifa gameplay, feels awful no matter the settings.

Indeed, the game feels different from the demo and Beta.

Full game seems slower, more weight in it.

Although it still plays very well, the thing I find even more annoying is the offline matches. I am very disappointed by the AI superstar difficulty (or even the one just before).

All teams, even the most unknown small team plays one-touch passes like Barcelona, and defends with 11 players. Matchs become so soporific because of that. No Champion's League style open matches, we here have completely closed matches with 11 AI defending.

This is horrible.

The game is not horrible. Re-evaluate the way you are approaching things. If you're doing it, stop trying to rush towards the goal at every opportunity, it's not a race to score a goal from the first moment you get possession, be patient. If you see the opposition has 11 players behind the ball and are packing the middle of the pitch either recycle the ball or change your tactics to hug the touchline and start switching the play to create spaces.

This years game rewards possession and stops people who think they can aimlessly spam crosses and throughballs from succeeding at higher levels.

Tried to play a quick game last night.

Is there no way to change the duration of the exhibition match? Looked everywhere in the options but to no avail.

I can change the duration of the match in Master League.

Also the defensive line is SO deep...

anyone looking for 3v3 mates can join this discord https://discord.gg/enF6m6f

not sure what they are thinking with the 3v3 tho, why can you play with 1 or 2 users and use myclub teams? dont like that, also no manual force for matchmaking

The switching of players makes the game almost unplayable for me. Several times a match, the ball will drift past one of my players only for them to stand still and ignore it before it goes to an opponent.

There is slowing the game down, and then there is breaking the game. Konami have broken this.

I disagree, I've had better luck hitting aimless through balls this year than I have for the past few Pro Evos. The defence don't track the runners well at all and it just leaves holes all over the place.

Player switching is so broken that I'm thinking about switching back to Fifa for the first time in 3 years.

I've not really had many problems with the player switching but it could be improved. If you think you'll find that in FIFA 18 then good luck as it was pretty awful in the demo.

why Konami and EA make the demos different from their full games? i dont get this.

Marketing. First impression is extremely important. So they do basically tone down AI in order to give the player control and an illusion of freedom to build the game that makes even amateurs play like Real, Barca or Bayern. The final game (in PES case) is tweaked towards CPU having unstoppable attacks on higher difficulties and the AI basically makes no mistakes. EA introduced CPU sliders but after 3 years of trying different sliders they either worsen things or even break the game.

The player switching has been a problem the last few years.

It's always been fine to switch from Player A to B, but if you want to switch back to A again, it will somehow go to Player C. Mind Boggling.

There's an option to make it more manual (I think on default its either auto/semi auto (CPU assisted)), so I'll play around with that tonight.

That doesn't fix FIFA's issue with every AI team playing exactly the same

But I don't think they do all play exactly the same.

Or at least - I feel this is a feature that people tend to greatly exaggerate in PES. I've probably been guilty of this myself. That's one of a few things I feel is a step down from 2017.

Again playing on manual, but I feel like I've been punished by the star players, and that the big players have been the ones to make the difference, much more on FIFA than I have in PES so far. I don't feel like I'm having to adapt or change my own game in this year's PES anywhere near as much as last year.

Something just isn't right with this year's version and I'm incredibly disappointed by it. 2017 was so close and this feels like a backward step.

They massively improved the AI in Fifa 17, plays great against the computer. I'd probably say it's more advanced in Fifa than PES.

After the demo I'm planning on grabbing this at lunchtime. Should I lads? Last PES I bought was 2011,though I messed around with 2015 briefly.

Think semi is basically manual. It says in the description for semi that it only changes automatically when in attack. Just need to get used to using the right stick to select players then it solves the problem. I do like that it indicates who the second player is now, massive help when you're calling a second defender to help.

I'm yet to be beaten in online divisions and I'm averaging over 60% possession in my games. I've averaged 3 goals for and 0.38 against so far in 9 games (won 7 drawn 2) so it's working for me.
