Probably be one anyway once he gets into office.

Yup.

Jesus Christ. Petitions and protests are also part of democracy. A democratic system is more than elections.

Yes but there is a process that has to be followed, and you can't undermine it or it becomes utterly meaningless. The result is abominable but at the same time a demonstration of democracy at work. The popular vote didn't elect Gore in 2000 and didn't elect Clinton now, but you can't move on until you accept the past.

This was a good quote actually.

In a way, if the EC doesn't overturn this result, it will prove what a useless outdated system it is.

Abso-fucking-lutely.

In all other aspects of this election, I feel sadness. But, for the Electoral College, I feel only rage.

How would this work? PA has 20 electoral votes and my friend posted a photo of the electors today. I think there was 10 of them. Does this mean if one of them is faithless then Trump only gets 18 of PA's electoral votes and Hillary gets 2??

Every election 50% of the country is disappointed by the results. You have no more right to disqualify Trump as republicans had disqualifying Obama.

Had Clinton won and all of these posts and protests were by republicans a lot of you would be yucking it up and laughing.

Since half the country couldn't be bothered to vote, I'd recommend volunteering your time in the next cycle to encourage others to vote.

Don't you understand that Trump won the election fair and square despite direct interference and collusion with Russia and the FBI, losing the popular vote and the GOP doing its best to suppress democratic and minority voters across the nation? How can you be angry about this! This is democracy! Now shut up, listen to the powers that be and do what you're told, as is the American way. And don't you even try to bring up your constitutional rights to petition and protest, because I'm just too complacent to care.

The petition is very concerned about the fact that Hillary won the "POPULAR VOTE."

I feel like there are much greater faults in our election system than the electoral college. I don't see how you can be so adamant that the electoral college is inherently bad when you're perfectly fine with the senate giving more power to the smaller states in the same exact way. I don't see a million petitioners speaking out against gerrymandering and voter suppression, actual really stupid elements of the process.

I think the distribution of electoral votes could use some tweaking (California should have like 200 EVs directly relative to Wyoming but instead only has 55), but crying that Clinton should've won because of the popular vote is forgetting that we are a union of states first.

So my girlfriend should stop crying because the government assistance her mom and sister depend on is about the get blown away?

Ya, fuck you too.

No one has to be happy about this election. I will never support Trump or anything he does. We will all be sad for years to come.

However, he is our president now. You need to accept that, because that is our reality. Hoping for faithless electors to get Clinton into presidency is not. And I would consider such a move to be far worse than anything proposed by Trump.

People need to cut this shit out.

Get organized. Even protest, but this hurts us. The wrong kind of public action will only embolden his supporters and ensure a second term.

We need to do something, but it has to be the RIGHT something.

This is dumb, just like the calls for another vote for Brexit immediately after that outcome. You can't raise a stink when a democratic process doesn't go your way, otherwise you're no better than Trump calling the system rigged when the odds seemed stacked against him.

Blame the people who contributed to the mess. The people who placed donkey votes. The people who didn't vote. Overhaul the electoral college system. Or abolish it all together. But accept the current result.

Not really going to comment on what's right and wrong here (other than saying that Trump and Pence terrify me as leaders).

But right about now, I'm real grateful for the first past the post system that we follow during our Canadian elections.

Do minorities and Muslim families need to get over being in fear for their life and threatened in public too? Do tell.

No and we should stand against any mess Trump or the Republicans try to pull. We can still fight for our rights and have our voices heard. But as far as the outcome of this election - it's over and we need to accept that she lost.

Democracy is only okay when it goes my way.

You see, democracy in the united states is weird.

Im from mexico, a couple of presidents ago the candidate who lost actually requested a "ballot by ballot, poll by poll" recount, and he got it, yes he still lost, but the thing is, the winner was elected by voting majority, literally the candidate with the most votes won.

And it's absolutely bizarre that USA "democracy" doesn't work like that, more people voted for Hillary, but Trump wins because a bizarre "some states and thus votes are worth more then others" and "if a candidate wins a state for 1 vote, all the state worth goes to that candidate" bullshit.

Can you say you guys are following the "will of the people" when more people voted for hillary but due to bullshit that is not clearly explained to the average citizen, Trump wins?

This is yet another revision of the 'both sides' argument.

If this was just another Republican candidate, cool.

What we are facing here is something else.

Yeah, that's not how it works though.

He won, it doesn't honestly matter if he openly worships the devil, he got enough people to vote for him that he won the election and that's how our country works. Bush was a fucking HORRIBLE President, and I was legitimately scared for our country when he got re-elected in '04, but we got through it.

To the people who voted for him, which is pretty close to 50% of the votes, he's not the worst thing ever. You win some elections, you lose some elections. A bad President can set the country back, but a good one can make progress again right after.

We have to respect the election even when we lose or Democracy literally falls apart.

This battle has been lost. The war of progress and tolerance is not over by a long shot.

People need to regroup, come up with a different plan of attack, and try again with mid-terms and the next election.

While certainly not true for everyone, I already know plenty of people upset at these results that either didn't vote or voted third-party. Hopefully, next time, they'll make a wiser decision.

But just a reminder, one and all, to do your part and encourage others to do yours. That did not happen on the scale we needed this election.

"Evil wins when good men do nothing", as they say.

Fuck off, stop crying and move the fuck on.

Imagine the amount of blood spilt in this country if this were to happen. Riots in mass would happen across the country, and the public's trust in the system would come to an end.

The public shouldn't trust a system as flawed as the American electoral system. The system has failed Americans again and again, it has now allowed a psychopath to be elected without even winning the lion's share of the popular vote. I'm not saying that having the college electing someone else is a sensible idea, it probably isn't, but the system is fucked and it needs to be changed drastically.

Will be interesting to see how many electors go against the grain and risk their careers over this. Already heard of a few that plan on voting against their constituency. This could get messy but prob won't change anything. A petition for Iron Man as president would prob have similar results. Good as a protest expression though.

Too bad. He's my president, my friend's, and yours too. Either join all of us and help us go forward or be selfish and cry in the corner. Get out of your false reality and wake up. You're not going to die because he's president.

This is extremely naive. People are going to die. He just lit up the entire group of people who want nothing more than minorites to go away. You seriously don't think that now that they feel empowered that we won't get hate crimes and therefore death? Just in one day hate crimes have already started to go up.

Sorry, but this Unity people are spouting is bullshit. It's not unity. It's submission.

You're not going to die because he's president.

some actually might. he's not going to be their president. he doesn't represent the hopes and dreams of minorities and women and immigrants. he represents their worst fears and the worst of us. he doesn't represent me.

anyway, i'm all for the electoral college electing the candidate who won the most votes in an election since that actually seems more democratic.

How would this work? PA has 20 electoral votes and my friend posted a photo of the electors today. I think there was 10 of them. Does this mean if one of them is faithless then Trump only gets 18 of PA's electoral votes and Hillary gets 2??

30+ Faithless electors would have to not only choose Trump, but they'd have to switch to Clinton as well

And if that didn't happen, it'd still go to the House of Representatives

Her becoming President because of all that, after she conceded, after the transition with Trump's team has already begun, would hurt this country HORRIFICALLY.

Too bad. He's my president, my friend's, and yours too. Either join all of us and help us go forward or be selfish and cry in the corner. Get out of your false reality and wake up. You're not going to die because he's president.

You can't call for unity while at the same time calling for my friends and relatives to have their rights stripped, be deported and banned from the country. And yes, some of them WILL die because he's president, because he enables hatemongers who found validation.

As others have said, lol.

But Hillary won the popular vote. That was the will of the people.

Not a voter suppressed electoral college.

But still.. lol.

Not gonna happen, but in a way it's exactly what the EC system is supposed to do...

It' funny that a guy named "diktatorship" would complain about "only being a democracy when we like the result", specially when Clinton actually won the popular vote (the real democratic outcome).
