Phil Spencer Is Bullish On Microsoft/Disney Partnership For Indiana Jones And Blade

Despite prominent Disney-owned Marvel heroes like Spider-Man and Wolverine having long-term deals on Sony's PlayStation 5, Xbox has deals for a few Disney properties of its own including Marvel's Blade and Lucasfilm's Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has previously expressed his wariness towards licensed games, but he recently praised Disney and Lucasfilm for being strong partners on their upcoming projects together.

"I feel great about our partnership with Lucas and Disney," Spencer told Game File. "They've been good partners. We're obviously doing Blade with Arkane Lyon with them. I was just out there visiting with that team."

During the same interview, Spencer explained that one of the reasons he dislikes dealing with licensed titles is that the licenses can expire, which leads to games being delisted over time. Instead, he prefers to focus on IP owned by Microsoft's umbrella of developers and studios. But for games like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Spencer is willing to make some exceptions in part because the developer--MachineGames--has such an intense passion for the property.

"I think what you see in Indiana Jones is a team that really loves Indiana Jones and that world," related Spencer. "The story is, to me, one of the strongest parts of that game--the way you feel like you're Indiana Jones from a first person perspective. So it's clear that's something they wanted to do. But, for us, given the [intellectual property] that we have that we own, I'm a big fan of us using the IP that we haven't even revisited."

Translation: I ok'ed because I think it will make us a lot of money, I don't give a flying shit about some nerds having their games delisted in 5 years. Buy new games suckers, lololololol.

Going from Xbox exclusive to announcing it for PS5 before it even launched doesn't suggest being bullish, that's actually bearish.
Unless you're considering it from a revenue standpoint.
And I think that's all Microsoft is looking at any more.

Aside from that, I don't think these are good properties. KK killed Indiana Jones. And Feige can't seem to get Blade up and running.

The blade game looks kinda garbage from the trailer it should be dark & gritty like the batman games not this peanut butter jelly bs

My favourite part of Indiana Jones is when Phil Spencer paid extra to make it forever exclusive only to release it multiplatform anyway so Disney got the original deal and more money for actually nothing.

I agree with this. That's the only way this could be seen as bullish.

Indiana Jones looks like an awful video game and Arkane Lyon's last title sucked. Between devaluing their own platform and having an increasingly bad track record on games, the enthusiasm or intrigue in these titles is barely above absolute zero.

There's nothing to be confident about. Disney wasted the Blade license on these clowns, and Indiana Jones never made sense for a modern game adaptation.

I think a third person Uncharted like Indiana Jones game would have made a lot of sense.

Sounds like he wants to tap into the plethora of IP that Bethesda owned rather than making something that only a niche enjoy. Indiana Jones is a dead franchise and if they were going to do something with it, I really wish it would have been more like Uncharted or Tomb Raider.

Considering latest superhero movies performances from Disney and general game quality by MS, this is a match made in heaven!

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull made money.

And destroyed a major box office franchise. We all went to see it in theaters worldwide and it was a disaster. It was a 53 on rotten tomatoes for its user score and averages a 6.9/10 from critics. Dial of Destiny definitely didn't make its production and marketing budget back.

The way this guy went from being the good guy of this industry to whatever is happening right now should be studied.

He was never "the good guy" He was just a propagandist and has been shoveling shit for years. There is a graphic on his annual lies somewhere on neogaf.

It will sell 120,000 by the end of 2025. Then we will never hear of this game again. Just like Disney +, That service is dead.

I don’t understand the appeal of either.

Indiana Jones is an old man movie series with zero appeal today.

When was the last Blade movie anyways?

If you are going to work with Disney, at least use some of their good IP.

When was he ever the good guy of the industry. It's been a shit show the entire time he's been in charge of Xbox.

Let's not try and change history here. Before the Series consoles released he was seen as the guy that would shift Xbox with that 300$ console plus Series X being the one with more teraflops. When Gamepass started out there was a lot of hype around it and what Phil was bringing to the table and how that model would change the industry. And when Xbox was doing all those acquisitions A LOT of people were cheering them and wondering what the next big one would be.

Now that everything backfired is easy to look back and say "yeah that never happened" but it really did. And gaming journalists and even Digital Foundry were all in on that hype train (and eventually crashed).

I dont care about Indy, but better not fuck up Blade.

Just like the movies. Blade 1 awesome, Blade 2 decent, Blade 3 junky comedyfest.

All you got to do is make a dark and gritty vampire killing game similar to Blade 1.

Find me anytime where I praised Phil Spencer as a paragon of the gaming industry and I'll send you 1,000 dollars via venmo.

I literally never mentioned your name anywhere. But the vibe about him was totally different and there was a lot of praise going on about him, you can't deny that. The PR machine around him was huge.

Indie looks great, and if it reviews well, I’ll buy it on ps5 pro next year, if it’s mid, I’ll play it on games pass on the X 🤷‍♂️

Agree. Before this dumpster fire happened, there were no lack of articles on "how will Sony compete" with these so called "foward thinking" initiatives.
