Phil Spencer says Xbox is "really happy" with Indiana Jones "there's life in that franchise," but he also wants more original IP

adamsapple

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

In an interview with Variety, Spencer is asked point blank if there are plans for MachineGames to continue Indiana Jones and the Great Circle as a series, and as expected, the media-trained Xbox executive had no plans to drop major news like that partway through an interview. That said, he did confirm Xbox is "really happy" with the game and teased a potential future.

"We do think there's life in that franchise, and I'm just gonna leave it at that," Spencer said, pivoting, "We're launching on PlayStation here pretty soon. I think that'll be a cool moment."

Spencer went on to praise MachineGames for its ability to "do something so unique" with a world and IP created by a different company, but said he wants to see more original Xbox games - that is, games based on Xbox-created IP - in the future.

"Going forward, I also want to give the teams the ability to do our own games and our own franchises," Spencer said. "We have a lot of room to tell new stories, as well. And I want to make sure that's an option for us."

Game seems totally fine. Might play it eventually but...

It's arguably one of the best new games of the gen, give it a shot.

You're gonna love it.
I am buying the game for PS5 but Indy is a boomer franchise that nobody under the age of 45 cares about and has been buried by bad movies. There really is no life in the franchise.

You know how in The Last Crusade, there are all those cool looking, opulent golden goblets and cups, but the one that you should really pick up is the boring wooden mug?

This game is kinda like that.

I loved the game. I'd be okay with 1 sequel. Usually a team has a few ideas left, and gains more confidence to truly achieve everything on round 2. Don't do a trilogy. 1 more at the very most, then back to original IP like he said.

Just started playing this on the Pro yesterday...only 2 hours in but I'm enjoying it a lot. Feels like the classic Indy franchise, not the garbage newer movies.

I gotta disagree man, lol.

I'm significantly under 45 and loved the original movies and the game. Regardless of the last few movies, treat the game like Escape From Butcher Bay, a great iteration of the franchise.

Disney killed the IP. Just the truth.
To be fair to Phil I agree with this completely. I haven't heard anything to discourage me from getting this on PS5. Only reason he's throwing around platitudes and freeing the devs up (assuming it actually occurs) is because Disney dropped the ball with the IP in my opinion.

As a huge Indiana Jones fan and in love with Machine Games' work on The Great Circle... nothing would make me happier if this were the case.

Whether or not it happens, we won't know for at least four years.

Look I hate Xbox and MS as much as the next guy and was totally ready to write this game completely off, but it turned out pretty damn good and also churned up a little more interest than I expected. One of my favorite things MS ever "made." I cannot arbitrarily shit on it. On this game at least the devs were pretty good guys even though this is a boomer IP, I say let them cook. I'd like to see them do a new Riddick game!

It's like Bloober Team. Man we shit on them, remember that, lol?

It was one movie. Disney had the opportunity to do something and decided to wait forever and put out the recent trash.

Dude the level of bias you're displaying is ridiculous.

Last Crusade came out in 1989 and Crystal Skull came out in 2008. This was 19 years of opportunity to do something with it, you know while Harrison Ford was still worth putting in your movie as a lead?

But you call Disney who bought Indiana Jones in 2012 and were set to get the film out by 2019 but were delayed by covid and still got a movie out in 2023, 11 years after they bought the rights, but it's disney that waited forever?

Both are a single movie, both are trash. The IP was dead before Disney got it.

Funny but not quite. Bloober earned their shitty reputation by putting out a ton of 5/10 horror walking sims. The turned a corner with SH2 and earned respect.

Some of us aren't tourists with Bethesda games. We enjoyed their output before the acquisition and didn't suddenly shit on everything they do because of Xbox Derangement Syndrome.

Bias? LOL. Disney sat on a major IP for over a decade and chose to go with Harrison Ford again instead of doing something new. Now no one gives a shit about Indy.

Unless the second game turns out to be their "Temple of Doom" and then they have to finish the trilogy with a game that's very much like the first, only with some tweaks.

Sounds like IP rights could be expensive. On the other hand its the best AAA game under his tenure there. So what to do...

I'm under 45 and love Indiana Jones, no idea where you got that stat from! Also, the game's reception tells otherwise…

Anyway, something I grew with Phil on: they had one hit, I hope the don't start milking it and wait 5-10 years before releasing another.
