Pillars of Eternity |OT| You must gather your party before venturing forth.

Side quests and tasks don't disappear or change when you reach a new chapter, right?

My level 5 party's getting their asses kicked in the (Chapter 1 side quest spoiler)
Blood Legacy quest, Temple of Skaen.
I feel like I could use an extra level from doing main quest stuff. Other than this particular place, I haven't had much trouble at all with the combat (Hard difficulty)... well, that's not really true - fighting Shades and Shadows sucked ass earlier.

Maaan i love playing rogues but dont like them in pillars so far. Cant initiate with them since the sneak attack will reveal me and kill me instantly once mobs attack me. And cmon, no bonus damage for attacking from behind with a rogue? Kinda disappointed. Guess ill stick to my druid.
I initiate with my frail attacker too (arbalest shot), but as long as you then put him behind your tanks (or bring your tanks in front of him), they'll be the ones intercepting the incoming monsters.

Also, I'm not sure since I'm not running a rouge, but I think that if you attack an enemy engaged to someone else (AKA flanking), you are doing sneak attacks on him.

You later get an ability that'll make you invisible during combat, allowing for a retreat after a sneak opener. I would still recommend using a crossbow or a rifle for an opening attack since they do much more damage to begin with and the sneak bonus applies as well.

So long as you are flanking them you should be getting the sneak attack bonus. That bonus also applies if they are prone or hobbled or similar.

Dyrford Quest Spoiler:

Holy shit, Blood Legacy. I couldn't bring myself to kill the girl. I don't know if I did the right thing or not. Did anyone else have an internal moral debate (in a good way) on this quest or am I just weird?

There is (or was) a way to save her.

I got attacked by a guy on the streets cause I killed his girlfriend Danna. And I felt really bad causeI can't remember her. :/

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!

Ha, i did that place on level 9 and people died so quickly that i didn't even bothered with pausing.
And that's act 2 stuff, i guess

Is there a way to use the same shield in multiple weapon sets? Kana is my off-tank with a giant ass shield, I'd love to be able to keep it equipped and rotate between a slash / piercing / crush weapon as needed.

I think you are there a bit early. I did it at about Level 8/9 in Act II. There is a quest that sends you to Dyrford after you get to Defiance Bay which ends Act I.

Yeah I made life much more difficult for myself by doing that quest on level 4 and boy what a struggle it was, I went back to Defiance Bay and am wiping the floor with everything I encounter. So yeah, if you're getting annihilated, you're probably in the wrong place.

The area you're in is mostly an Act 2 area anyway so you will be fine coming back to it.

I figured, but the options weren't available to me since I'm using a mix of created characters and written companions, and my Watcher didn't meet the proper requirements.

Still, it was interesting to not have a clear morally right option.
I couldn't bring myself to kill her, and I'm not sorry the Lord is gonna get what's coming to him, but I still couldn't save her and don't feel like I did the "right" thing. It's an interesting feeling.

This quest probably irked me the most in the game.
I managed to save her but the only option that did not result in a major negative to Defiance Bay was to let the Lord walk. I should have killed him and fuck the consequences.

That....makes me feel even worse.
Also my main chara kinda looks like Bison, now that you mention it...

Edit: Wait, it literally WAS Tuesday. Damn.

How important is Eder for tanking? I tend to send him in first to attract all the attention while the rest of my party uses ranged attacks. I find him a bit dull due to the lack of active abilities and am wondering if I could make do with
Durance and Kana
as my front line. Would they just get squished? Would their lack of extra engagement abilities cause enemies to skip them and go for my backline?

Edit: Playing on hard and just restarted due to stat boost bug and finding things a bit easy with a party of 6.

Dammit. The Doemenels won't let me do their quests because I'm apparently closely aligned with The Dozens.

Time to murder them all and loot all of the containers in their home.

Gun damage vs melee is so horribly balanced.

Damage reduction ruins melee DPS.

This isn't a complaint about difficulty or anything, I'm breezing through encounters...but I'm forced to have every party member wielding a gun of some sort. My spellcasters with no talents for ranged weapons are more effective than my melee 2h specialised character.

I adore the game, I just hope there's some significant balance sweeps.

So I gave Grieving Mother a blunderbuss and now I suddenly know what true power is like.

Unless I'm mistaken, ciphers gain focus for every hit... and Blunderbusses fire six projectiles. It's truly a match made in heaven.

Get a Cipher with 4 weapon sets and put a Blunderbuss in each.

Mind blades> Mind Blades> Bang!> Mind Blades> Bang!> Mind Blades> Bang!> Mind Blades> Bang!> Mind Blades> loot corpses.

Kind of dull though. The problem with the "new" caster classes in PoE is that all their spell levels use the same resource so you end up just spamming your best spell most of the time.

Thanks. Just went to Defiance Bay, specifically the sewers, and it's like day and night in terms of difficulty - shit's dying within a minute or two. The place I was stuck in started to get on my nerves. Had to camp between every fight, basically, hah.

For example, I explore every corner of every map, sneak around everywhere to find hidden places, talk to everyone and read pretty much every dialogue option that is not an exclusive choice, I may mull over quite a few of the ones that are actually choices, sometimes after a dialogue I may save and reload a past save to see what the reactions to the other choices are. I also read all the Yellow NPCs stories. I don't read all books but I read everything else and do every quest, subquest, task and hidden task (the ones that are not actually tracked) I find.
Also some fights playing at Hard can be time consuming with my strategy.

This is what I've been doing, and I just finally headed into Defiance Bay to start sidequests and maybe the main quest there at 30 hours. The only thing I finally stopped was reading the yellow NPCs, because it finally became clear most of them weren't interesting or well-written, and the bulk of them don't tie into the world's fiction at all, aside from being part of generic fantasy scenarios that don't violate the world's fiction.

I hope the next PoE game (or the expansion) doesn't include all this stuff from backers, because none of it really fits.

Yeah if they go kickstarter either for a second expansion or a sequel, I hope they don't include reward tiers with effects on the game, unless they are very minor, or if they reserve the right to mold them to fit the story/game world better. So maybe a reward tier with a magic item where you only get to pick the item type and a suggest some names, the rest is handled by the devs.

See, this doesn't bother me that much. I stopped reading them too because it became too time consuming but it's easy to tell the backer content from normal content, so you can just avoid it.

I understand it's "immersion-breaking" and "doesn't fit with the lore" and blah blah but just don't read them if you don't like them. The thing is that Pillars would not have been possible if a bunch of people didn't throw money at Obsidian to make it, so I'm perfectly fine with those people getting a little in-game reward. It really doesn't affect me that much. I'm just happy the game actually got made.

Yeah, I no longer click on memorials or yellow names. Even the names themselves are distracting, because hardly any of them seem like names that fit in the world of Eora. And a disproportionate number of them look out of place because people all picked "cool-looking" godlike, or whatever.

I do read every single book I find, though. And I sneak everywhere in a new area (there is usually at least one hidden stash on every map, I've found). And I weigh up options. And I listen to any and all voice acting, even though it's mostly pretty bad (I'll probably turn it off for future playthroughs.

I only wish the combat was harder to slow me down some. I might start enforcing a four- or five-member party. Or just go Path of the Damned next time.

Nalrend the wise!

Ended up taking about 800HP off Eder and 200+ each off Grieving Mother, Durance and Kana during the fight. Also burnt through most of my Level 3+ spells on Aloth and Durance buffing/debuffing/controlling and healing.

Anyone have approximate lvl ranges for different areas? I just dinged lvl 7 and have done zero main quests in Act 2. Debating exploring Dryford Village and surrounding areas (east part of the world map) but would hate to make the main story quests too easy if I pick up another lvl or 2 along the way.

For reference I have tackled pretty much every sidequest I found in Defiance Bay and the first few floors of Old Nua.

It's really obnoxious a lot of the time.

I'm playing this game that takes itself seriously and plays its world straight, and then you come across an epitaph that is literally a joke about the Mass Effect 3 ending:

9neqKdQ.jpg

It's like I'm playing with a crappy set of extra content mods that I can't disable.

You get the sneak attack bonus, witch is not as powerfull as the AD&D equivalent,, but it is something.

He will die without an heir and his lineage will be gone. I think that will hurt him more than killing him. And this will will be on his mind until he dies. So I think that's a good punishment for him. I am sorry for the girl though. Maybe she or her child will take revenge, as I told her the truth about who the father is.

It's really as unobnoxious as it gets. All you have to do is not click on gravestone markers and yellow NPC names. It isn't like thee are town criers screaming "THE CAKE IS A LIE!"

After the first memorial I haven't clicked on a single one since.

A lot of the yellow "soul characters" little vignettes are interesting but I feel like there are simply too many of them. Approaching hour 30 and I have begun either skimming them or ignoring them.

Ya, this quest kinda sucks for not really having any alternate paths, at least as far as I know.
All though I am kinda rolling in cash right now.

When you level up can you save the skill points for the next level up? I don't really want to spend points on stealth or want higher survival for my wizard and requirements for the others are too high to spend the other points?

Deyrford quest spoilers:
Were any of you able to do anything with the blood machine or whatever in the Skaen temple? It's before you find the girl below, and it acted (IMO) like there was something I could have done with the machine, perhaps related to Watcher powers, but then all the options I tried just lead to something about "maybe you could have been useful..." or something, before it just stops talking and tells me to go away.

Is there something I missed there?

It does have alternate paths.
I didn't pay anything.
Aside form 500 to get to see her

I admit I did pause for a second. Then I snapped her neck and killed her uncle. Which is ironic, since all the cultists wanted was to eradicate his lineage, and that's exactly what I did. Fuck.

There's an alternate way.
Do Maea's quest and she drops the price to see her to 500.
You can intimidate Selel for the amulet and get it from her for free.
