Okay, maybe I overshot it a little bit. But you have to admit that this series elicits more groans than anything when they announce a new one.

8.4 on imdb though, almost 3k votes
that would probably mean like a 7.5 for me, that's good enough

Nope, still Transformers.
This is the first POTC in 6 years, you sound like they pump these out every year.

In the time since POTC 3 released in 2007 we have gotten 2 more sequels...
Transformers has released 5 movies in the same time period.

Why the fuck are they still making these?

The second one had some marvelous setpieces, but as a movie, it's a fucking tiring mess.

The third one is utterly nonsensical and felt like 5 separate scripts by 5 separate writers were tossed on the floor, and a random collection of pages was picked up and handed to the director.

Never saw the fourth. Don't care enough.

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
Reviews don't always correlate to box office performance.

On Stranger Tides (the fourth one) has a 32 on Rotten Tomatoes and is the second highest grossing film in the series with over 1 billion at the WW box office.

That mess didn't really make that much money did it?!

Not even Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will make that much

They make a lot of money but if I'm not mistaken they're also some of the most expensive films ever.

I'm sure they make a profit even after Hollywood accounting, but it seems like they are getting riskier as time goes by.

4 was intended to be cheaper but funny enough ended up being like the most expensive ever.
Completely crazy because you can't see where the hell that money went, at least in 2&3 you could.

By people that don't actually care about Pirates as a series in the first place, sure.

It's not like Toy Story 4 where everyone is genuinely disgruntled at the idea of another movie.

I recall reading 4 went over budget due to the ship they built, it was pretty massive.

the budget for 5 is absolutely insane. It was budgeting at $250m, it went $70m OVER BUDGET and is currently at $320m production budget plus god knows how much spent on marketing, at least $100m. Its gonna be interesting to see which is a bigger bomb this year, King Arthur or Pirates 5.

It's pirates. Don't give a fuck about the reviews I'm still gonna watch it because there's probably some cool actions scenes.

i generally agree with their scores more often than rottentomatoes

IMDb user scores settle around 7/10 for every recent major blockbuster unless it's exceptionally awful due to how their algorithm works. It heavily favours movies with a larger fanbase and movies that came out recently. You agree with the score because the scale is intentionally designed to be agreeable to fans of whatever movie you're looking up.

Spider-Man 2 is rated 7.3.
X-Men: Apocalypse is rated 7.1.

Or to put it another way, Pirates 5 already has thousands of votes and the large majority of them are 10/10. Obviously, the thousands of people voting on IMDb have not seen the movie yet.

I cannot imagine a reality in which Pirates 5 bombs as hard as King Arthur.

I would say it is pretty much impossible for that to happen. Pirates 5 will likely have a larger worldwide opening weekend than King Arthur will make in its entire run.

that is ridiculous reasoning on their part,
Black Pearl - written out
Flying Dutchman - not used, set ship was sent to a Disney resort
Queen Anne's Revenge - was the Black Pearl made over

No crazy ship battle, no crazy ott CG scenes, smaller cast and filmed in cheaper locations outside the Caribbean.

Yea, but you need to look at the bigger picture. They sell tons of merchandise and hype people to visit one on the Disney parks to see th ride and spend even more money.

I think Monster Trucks already has the crown as the year's biggest bomba, but I think its entirely feasible that Pirates can overtake it.

Really doubt this will outright bomba, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's the lowest-grossing of the series. Though that itself might be considered a bomba.

Orlando Bloom was on Fallon and they played a clip with Will. Even if the movie isn't great, it was cool seeing him again and hearing some music from Dead Man's Chest.

Damn I really hoped this would be awesome I love the series.

I think too much time has passed and it would have been a relatively weak box office either way but I hope it can do ok!

I'll be there just for the music if nothing else

It could be 0% and probably still make like $600 million. I watch them all. I stopped really enjoying them after the second but I have to admit they're a lot of fun.

I don't trust reviews, nor RT for Pirates, I really enjoyed all the movies especially the 2nd one which is the best one for me, a really good movie with funny moments

So I'm gonna watch this

I just watched the movie and have to say: meh. The problem with these kind of franchise movies is that because everyone from the other installments HAS TO reappear in the new movie to fulfill the audience's needs, a very simplistic McGuffin story gets turned into a bloated mess. It's very tiring.
Other than that it was a typical Pirate story on autoplitot with the action that you can just expect from it + some pretty cringe inducing lines. There was literally only a single thing in this entire movie that felt somewhat creative - a very cool Jackie Chan-esque movie prop moment (guillotine).

RT's now at 30%. Was expecting some more positive reviews to come up over the week and push it up like they did to Boss Baby (which, looking back at it, is one heck of a anomaly TBH), but the the oncoming reviews seems definitely skewed towards the negative side.

Film will literally sink or swim on WOM now. Breaking even on that $230M budget will be one hell of an uphill battle, and if it doesn't.....woof.

Which is odd for that movie.

Another example is Jurassic World, from 57% to 71%.

Saw the movie yesterday and was very disapointed. I'd say it's a little bit better than 3 & 4 but long shots away from 1 & 2. Totally forgetable with yet again a messy script. Seriously, who writes this shit? I can't believe that with all the writing talent begging to get into Hollywood this is the best they can get. What a travesty.
