Huh. 2nd and 3rd sucked, of course. And it looks like all they kept from the book was Blackbeard and the Fountain.

But who am I kidding, I will so be there day one.

I'm just realizing this week about the connection to the Tim Powers book. =/ I feel stupid because I love The Anubis Gate and read Expiration Date and never heard of On Stranger Tides. I must remedy thing and track down a copy to read.

I'll probably see the movie too. At least they didn't just crib the man's plot elements without giving him a nod.

Looks like Sparrow is the main dude ..... the rest of the pirates movies can be classified in a scale of how much Sparrow appears.

Not that he is a bad character, but he works MUCH better in homeopathic doses =P

And why does P. Cruz always play the hot headed Spaniard??

She is a "Latina" and in Hollywood, Hot Head Spaniard is a pleonasm =P

So this is basically wacky fun times with Sparrow and Barbosa?

I'm in!

Why is no Bloom a good thing? I thought he was fine in the movies...

I don't mind the guy, but he and Kiera were terminally boring in the 2 sequels. People don't want that crap stinking up what should be a fun action/adventure movie about pirates.

It looks more "fun" than the sequels, which is good.
It looks cheaper though, which is bad.
It has Ian McShane, which is good.
Looks like there's a new "young couple", which is bad.
It looks Jack centric, which is good.
The toppings contain potassium benzoate... that's bad.

It's no Anubis Gates, but it's good fun.

And yeah, definitely nice to see Powers get some mainstream love.

Why is this a bad thing? Jack Sparrow is one of those characters which are.....well, kinda invincible and so over-the-top that I don't worry that much about his life. I know he'd always survive to go on another adventure. On the other hand, having two vulnerable characters increase my vested interest in the story. It makes the stakes higher.

I will say I'll miss having someone that Jack genuinely cared about, someone to play off his more human side (moreso Bloom than Kiera).

Those little glimpses were the best part of the sequels.

Well... could be bad. Too early to tell really.

2 and 3 sucked because it got bogged down with Bloom and Knightley bullshit.

Some people just plain hate pretty boy, which is kinda sad IMO. Yeah, I thought his character was okay as well.
Clearly that must be it. It couldn't be that his character's plot preempts the things that make the films interesting: the pirates, Sparrow, the era, etc.

I'll blame the writers who had 3 months turnaround for 2 and 3 more than anything else, though. The first movie was great.

Also, I like Keira, but I'm glad she's gone as well. Can't believe that Verbinski and the producers thought that her improv'd speech was worth keeping in 2.

WTF are you talking about? Will's 2nd movie arc was mainly about his relationship with his father, which ties closely with the mission to obtain Davy Jones' chest (thus, the whole Dead Man's Chest sub-title). So which part of that wasn't about the pirates, Sparrow, etc?

And it was thanks to this plot, that we got one of the most exciting action sequences from the movie: the fight between Jack/Will/Norrington to obtain the key to Jones' chest.

Most of these movies have blurred in my mind. I think I can remember certain things that were in the second and third but can't remember the first. I think I'll watch it when it releases on video, like all the others.

Looks like Stranger Tides will provide me with exactly what I want in a Pirates of the Carribean movie and more.
What I want: Sparrow, action, explosions, Sparrow-comedy.
What they give more: Ian McShane, cocksuckers!

It's a bad trailer.

And...does the movie run low on budget or something? The other movies always had plenty of amazing CGI shots. I see none here.

I thought 3 was an mprovement on 2.

I have a man-crush (as in a nonsexual crush, not the homosexual variety that I also frequently endure in my day-to-day life) on Gore, but the amount of money and time he spent filming that fucking pointless Island sequence was embarrassing.

Well, actually, maybe it was the writer's fault for setting up the scenario, not having the script ready in time and then having to write a contrived reason to stay on the Island just because they'd spent all that money getting things ready for transport, or something.

Whatever the reason, the financial irresponsibility of POTC2 was mind-boggling. I really loved the behind the scenes featurettes on those DVDs, they just don't make em like that anymore. :(

I miss Verbinski.

His style just made these films very cool looking and after seeing this trailer this film just looks bland.

I will watch it for sure but I am coming in with low expectations.

What I hated the most about the second and third movie was that it seemed like you couldn't actually kill any of these Fishpeople. That made all the sword fighting scenes just so pointless, because neither side would ever win...

btw. I think this should turn into a Keira Knightley appreciation thread ;)

Day one...

I do think it's a shame that they put blackbeard's fire beard feature (glowing coals in his beard) on that pirate in part one :(

Is it me or does this movie look a lot lower budget than the others? Either way I'll probably still watch it? :D

Probably just because the screen is not covered in tons of big special effects shots. The other pirate movies had a lot of big spectacle special effect sequences, Kraken, the Dutchmen, Davey Jones, giant whirlpool battle, etc, etc. This one seems much more grounded without huge supernatural elements.... at least in the trailer.

I like that this looks like it will evolve Barbossa's character. He was a lot like Blackbeard in the first movies anyway (quintessential pirate, at least), so they had to do something different with his character here. The whole series isn't afraid to this, really - Norrington, Elizabeth, and Will have all had major life changes over the course of the movies. Only Jack really remains the same.

Also, anyone who doesn't like Dead Man's Chest is crazy. Davy Jones is the coolest character in the series and a great villain.

I love Keira, but Elizabeth and Will went from fun complements to Jack in the first movie to utterly exhausting decoration. I don't care if the 2nd and 3rd movie hinged on Will's relationship with his father; it's no accident that the moment they bogged it down with that nonsense, the whole thing went to piss.

Does anyone know if Black Caesar will be in the film? I know he served under Blackbeard, always thought it'd be interesting to see him in a film.
