Um, they just finished filming a couple weeks ago. They haven't had much time to add the CG yet. The writers have assured us that we shouldn't worry about any budget issues. This movie will be on par with the others as far as budget and effects.Epix said:Didn't see any CG in the trailer. Budget am cry?
I won't post spoilers but I'm happy to debunk falsehoods. Going line by line:
>> First, though, this movie magician is currently busy trying to
>> pull off his greatest trick yet - making another swashbuckling,
>> smash hit Pirates of the Caribbean film on a fraction of the
>> previous budgets.
A fraction? This is misleading if not entirely untrue, only because 9/10 is indeed a fraction.
>> Hit by the economic crisis, Disney has slashed at least 33 per
>> cent off his budget for the now shooting Pirates of the Caribbean
>> 4: On Stranger Tides ...
This is false. There was never a budget that was then slashed by 33 percent. That is impossible, in so many ways. One, the person budgeting the screenplay would lose their job. They have to try to get the most bang for the buck. If the same film can be made for 1/3 less, they've screwed up. (As an example, a film budgeted at 200 million would be made for 133 million. Not likely.) Next, you can't cut 33 percent of the budget without cutting 33 percent of the screenplay. The screenplay is always around 115 pages; no way have we lost 40 pages; some stuff gets cut, some gets added. Finally, this is an 'above the line' top heavy budget, which limits the percentages that can be cut.
It's not even right to say, "Hit by the economic crises ..." If anything, lower revenue projections have to do with less anticipated DVD sales due to alternate forms of delivery, independent of the economy.
>> and ordered cheaper locations (Hawaii and London instead of
>> the Caribbean), fewer special effect shots (1,300 rather
>> than 2,000) and a shorter filming schedule (95 days as opposed
>> to 142 on the third movie).
Cheaper locations -- wrong, and laughably so. It's more expensive to shoot in Hawaii and London than say New Orleans and Puerto Rico. Hawaii and London were chosen despite the high price tag, offset some by tax breaks, which means more movie overall for the money.
The special effects shots always start low on a film and then grow; you can't compare the finished number of effects on one film with the planned number of effects on another. Also, the content tend to be different with different stories; with Davy Jones, and crew, for example, everything was an effects shot. Blackbeard is not an effect, it's Ian McShane, and that was in no way an economic decision.
Regarding the shooting schedule, again, 142 days is after a hurricane or two, and after stopping and starting for various production reasons, and includes some of the difficulties of shooting two movies at once. But different stories require different amounts of time in any case. AWE might have been planned to be 110 days and gone over; if you count rehearsal days and second unit on P4 it's around a 100 days and counting, so what?
>> Typically, the ace producer has a plan and it's breathtakingly

>> tells me.
P3 was a Return of the King style conclusion of a trilogy, and probably should have been cut down some from its running time, and a lot of that running time is a credit scroll. The first cut of P4 will be, I promise, over two hours (as are all films), and then we go about tightening to best effect. I would bet that including credits P4 will end up over two hours running time. I see this as a function of the type of story that is being told, and nothing to do with so-called budget cuts.
>> There are other savings, including Johnny Depp's Captain
>> Jack Sparrow spending more time on land than water due to
>> the cost of filming at sea.
This one is nonsense. We had some specific story elements (including the Fountain of Youth) that demanded us to go onto land. And I'm not even sure that saves money.
>> When I ask if Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom have been
>> dropped for budgetary reasons, he dodges the question, saying:
>> "We decided to go in a different story direction this time but there
>> is more great British talent, including Ian McShane as our villain."
Again, wrong. The question was in no way dodged. Kiera made it clear she didn't want to continue. So how do you justify the word 'dropped?' Without Keira, the series logically would go in a new direction.
Well now, that depends on what all they kept from the book...KevinCow said:Blackbeard is... a pirate with a black beard.

Add me to that list too.KevinCow said:I'm apparently one of the few who loves all three of the past PotC movies, but I'm having a bit of trouble getting excited about this one. The trailers for Dead Man's Chest and At World's End both got me really excited, but this one's not really doing much for me. I'll still definitely go see it though.
Does anyone else feel like Blackbeard is a bit of a step down from Davy Jones? Davy was a cursed undead pirate with a squid face, and an awesome, unique, and memorable villain. Blackbeard is... a pirate with a black beard.

Really. What the hell is the point of ditching Legolas and Natalie Portman-girl if they're just going to replace them with even more generic looking characters?PhoenixDark said:Awesome, another annoying young couple to ruin a Pirates movie. Also, there is a track you can sample inside. Sounds awesome. The spanish flamenco influence is strong, but it's really nice, and I imagine will suit the movie in certain scenes just fine.
