Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides trailer

I still need to watch the first one. I've seen Johnny Depp escape Port Royale prison like 20 times but never stick around for whatever reason.

I was wondering recently, that a Pirates of the Caribbean movie is coming out within 2 weeks and there is hardly any fanfare and hysteria surrounding it. I mean c'mon, this thread has about 4 pages. Has the brand name been sullied, and the franchise overstayed it's welcome?

Both for me. The only thing that would get me in a theater would be unanimous critical praise.

yeah, i was so hyped up for the 2nd movie. never again.
It's a shame too because of just how much I loved the first entry, but the last 2 abysmal showings have killed pretty much all hype I have for this series.

see this on Thursday with zero expectations. That's not negative, I just honestly don't know what to expect from it.
One thing the new potc got going for it is Ian McShane as Blackbeard. I really liked some of his work.

I'm genuinely excited to see what Rob Marshall can do...and I LOVE Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane. Also Stephen Graham! It's just I don't know what else they can do to expand the Pirates universe, that's where my zero expectations lie.

Wisely adapt a novel instead of pulling shit out of their asses like in 2 and 3, perhaps? 3 was especially bad for that. 2 isn't a great screenplay by any stretch, but at least there was a screenplay. They were shooting 3 while trying to patch together some kind of coherent script for it and failed miserably at every turn. For that reason alone, 4 should at the bare minimum be the best since the first.

These movies have been really fun. Yeah 2 and 3 had some convoluted shit in them but they're still entertaining adventure flicks IMO.

2 and 3 both suffer from King Kong syndrome for me (albeit not anywheres as bad as in that movie) - I wouldn't find either even remotely as offensive if they were 45 minutes shorter. Both are long as fuck but short on content.

I know, I know. I hated the third one, but thought the second was fun. This will likely be better, but I just don't feel like it is a story I'm interested in. I'm just hoping the film proves to be fun though and I'm definitely looking forward to it being a standalone adventure.

I agree that they could have been shorter. Guess I'm just a sucker for old-school adventure flicks. Loved the battle at the end of the third one, ships circling each other in a giant ass whirlpool fffff.... and then the two ships blasting the fuck out of Beckett's ship ffff

Badass I say.

Beckett walking down the stairs in slow mo while the ship gets blasted to fuck is one of the most unintentionally hilarious scenes ever :lol

Hell yeah. I laughed my ass off but it was still badass.

Been slowly going through my new blu rays for the trilogy in anticipation for the new one. Really love all three films (I'm easy to please, apparently). Watching the special features for P2, I'm amazed the last two movies managed to get made, especially in the script department. The two dudes seem like lazy layabouts.

I must be easy to please too. I enjoyed the second and third outing a lot. Good characters, good sets, good fun.
Never understood the total hate they get.

WHAT. I didn't know it was coming in two weeks. WTF.

2 has a lot of great elements (loved the big action setpiece involving the giant water wheel, Davey Jones has become one of the iconic villains of the past decade, the entire ending from Jack vs Kraken to Barbossa returning is fucking awesome, etc) bogged down by a meandering script (seriously, despite being somewhat comical, the entire cannibal island sequence could and should have been cut completely, and not only would the movie have lost nothing, but it would have been much better for it). Its a mediocre movie that could have been as good as the first with some polishing.

Third movie, however, has no redeeming features outside of Hans Zimmer's score.

Another problem with both sequels is that Jack Sparrow became self aware, so to speak. The first film was great because Jack was more of a supporting character, affording Depp the opportunity to steal many scenes. Then the movie became a huge hit and Jack Sparrow became a household name, and the focus shifted. In the sequels, the focus was squarely on Jack, and I felt it was way too much. Less is more.

See... here's my problem with the sequels. They felt bloated, overly serious and a bit boring. Fun is exactly what I felt was missing.

This, on the other hand, looks like it might be fun!

Arent you a fan of 2 and 3? Cant get much worse.

I like them for what they are. Sorta crazy, visually amazing, funny, and have a great sense of style and action, and the characters are interesting so it masks plot problems and etc.

I know their flaws, but in the same way that i love Bad Boys 2 and the A-Team, i love Pirates.

This one looks visually drab, a boring mess both in presentation and character wise.

This. I'm excited for the new one because they're bringing in a few new characters for the regulars to play against. It should be interesting to watch.

And I can't believe people hate the 2nd one. That's pure unadulterated fun. The 3rd one, I can understand if people hate it but the 2nd one? Sheesh.

Like I said, there is a lot of fun to be had with the second, but you often have to go through several layers of tedium to reach it.

The only fun of the third was when the lights came back on and I got to leave. May 2007 - month of WTF?/creatively bankrupt shittastic sequels - Spidey 3, Pirates 3, Shrek 3. Ugh.

Also, some of the best CG I've ever seen. I know now that they're computer men, but for the longest time, I kept mentally going back and forth on whether Jones' crew was CG or practical effects.

I just got an email from Disney inviting me to have a chance to see the movie this Saturday. They are holding an event at a mall in Paramus, NJ where the best dressed pirates will get tickets to see the movie at the IMAX 3D theater there. I do have a pirate costume that I use at the Renaissance Faire...Challenge Accepted!

Davy Jones is still the best CG/animation I've seen. Gollum and the Navi be damned.

Yeah. I liked Pirates 3 despite its flaws; perhaps I was so depressed about Spider-man 3 that it made Pirates 3 look amazing by comparison.

I'm sort of looking forward to this - I'm in what seems like the same boat as most here, loved the first, liked the second, hated the third. Despite the lack of hype, this looks a hell of a lot more interesting than the third by all accounts - new blood in the franchise replacing the stale Bloom and Knightly, an interesting choice of director and an adapted premise (which ensures that the plot will be better than the clusterfuck of AWE). Still, I can't get the sour taste of AWE out of my mouth so I'll keep my expectations low.

The 2nd movie is such a lightly vieled remake of The Empire Strikes Back.

Oh my god

Jack busting out of coffin = Luke busting out of dead Tauntaun (off-screen)
Tribal island battle/escape = Hoth
Jack being swallowed by Kraken = Han being frozen in carbonite
Will jealous of Jack and Elizabeth = Luke jealous of Han and Leia
Elizabeth kisses Jack before becoming Kraken chow = Leia kisses Han before freezing
Plans to rescue Jack = plans to rescue Han

need to go ly dow

EDIT: WILL AND BOOTSTRAP = LUKE AND VADER

Jack Sparrow - Han Solo
Will Turner - Luke Skywalker
Elizabeth Swan - Leia Organa
Beckett - The Emperor
Davy Jones - Darth Vader
Norrington - Lando Calrissian
Pintel - C3PO
Righetti - R2D2
Gibbs - Chewbacca
Kraken - Carbonite

Search your feelings, you know it to be true.

Not that I disagree, but what makes Will and Eliz boring characters? I see that description bandied about for lots of movies, but can't concretely define what people mean when they say that. Why aren't they as good as the rest of the main characters? and what are some good examples of the opposite (in different movies as well).

I liked Will, and was okay with Elizabeth before she started pretending to be a badass pirate and making cringe-worthy speeches and shit

The problem wasn't the characters (although they were both a bit vanilla for my tastes and Will did get fucked over/made obselete once they decided to make Jack the centrepiece) for me, it was the actors.

Not a fan of Orlando, he was good in LOTR because he kindly kept his mouth shut and did cool bow and arrow shit, but I still thought he was likable in the Pirates trilogy.

They needed actors who could keep up with Depp. Keira had her moments where she did, but Bloom was never even remotely up to the task. Depp danced circles around him.

Thankfully, 4 has McShane, Cruz and Rush, all actors who will be excellent (and in the case of Rush, already has been) pairings for Depp.

Well I just sampled the whole soundtrack. I've been reading online that some people don't seem to like it compared to the third. Personally I think it's great. A bit more scaled back, and there are some really soft, mellow tracks, but the flamenco guitar really gives it some much needed character and taste. Although there are also those who will think it sounds cheesy. Over all I'd say it's a pretty good soundtrack. Above average for sure, but not super incredible like The Fountain or something (different movie, different kind of music anyways). Worth checking out. Whether you like it or not will probably depend on your tastes and/or what you expected from it.

Soundtrack is so bad I deleted it off my hard drive. All the Zimmer tracks are a total rehash of his stuff in the other films, there's hardly any trace of a memorable theme to be found anywhere, and there is a serious lack of exciting action music.

Good job Zimmer on the total fail. The fucking guitar dude was the only thing that kept this score afloat and even that got repetitive after a while.
