But yes, Britney in the Top 3 and a Paris Hilton song? Wonderful list.

The song is called 'Paris Hilton', and the band is called 'Mu'.

Actually, after a bit of pondering on it, objectively speaking there's not much to complain about on their list.

Oh thank God. I'd never heard of Paris doing a song, so that makes me feel much better.

And I actually liked Toxic as a Britney song, nice and catchy, but the 3rd best song of the year? No.

I've never even heard of "Annie".

Well, she made a lot of peoples / media outlets lists... there's a fair bit of hype surrounding her album. I haven't heard any of her stuff myself.

As for Toxic, I was actually amazed at how many of my metalhead, grunge, hip-hop, pop hating friends got caught up in that song. It seems to have really hit off with a lot of people.

I think it's a good list for singles. Obviously they aren't saying these are all the best songs of the year, just the best songs released as singles. Oh, and Annie's album is a really, really good pop record.

That's a pretty hot list.

24: Rachel Stevens
"Some Girls"

Damn that is a hot song. Some girls always get what they wanna, wanna. It kept me up for hours every night for about a month with its catchy chorus.

really?
the list is surprising to me, they seem very elitist with most of their reviews, but the singles list is filled with mainstream pop. i dont get it. its so contradictory.

The Pitchfork Singles lists are always skewed more towards mainsteam. They tend to rate catchy singles as catchy singles, even with their otherwise elitist viewpoints. I think Toxic may well be the best thing Britney Spears has done, and in terms of catchy singles of 2004 I think only Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse and Gwen Stefani overtake it for me. No matter the quality of an entire album, singles can just be catchy enough, played enough to overlook the rest of it.

...and that, kids, was the first time I sucked a dick for crack
WTF? Pitchfork continues to prove that they are the biggest joke when it comes down to being a proper outlet for music info.

The hottest single of 2004 was Lola's Theme.

If they're giving awards to Rachel Stevens, the #1 house song of the year should find itself on that joke of a list.

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise
I've only heard 5 of those songs...

Am I out of touch or do I have taste?

I just saw that Paris Hilton is on that list. These guys are mentally retarded. No question. Singles are meant to be fun, to be listenable....why they put next to no dance/house tracks on that list is beyond me. Normally I'd say they were elitist, but there's a lot of total shit on that list. Bitchfork never ceases to amaze me. Some of their higher-listed selections are good, but overall that list is a pile of shit.

It's a song called "Paris Hilton" FYI.

I think I'm going to become a musician and make a totally radical single, engineered solely for the purpose of placing on end of year lists such as this one. Then I'll sit back and wait for your typical forum goer to post said end of year list, and then I'll laugh as another replies "WTF George Bush has an album!? This list SUCKS!!!!!!".

Maybe if you turn the volume right down on both of them. Otherwise, aside from the fact that they are both pop, Annie doesn't really sound like S Club at all.

And Annie is awesome, S Club are not.

15: Soulwax
"NY Excuse"

Respect.

If anyone gets a chance to catch Soulwax on their upcoming tour - do it absolutely fantastic live band. Album is superb as well.

Don't care what else is in the list, Britney ranked 3rd means this list is worthless.

well, she didn't write it. i think cathy dennis did - for pure cornball pop hooks , you can't really go past that song - although gwen stefani surely trumps it :D
