Dance Central |OT| Kinect's Killer App?

I've only done I've Got A Feeling on Medium and Hard. For the other two I've completed Easy. It's hard for me to say which moves are new because I haven't done every song at every difficulty that came with game yet.

Here's a breakdown of Black Eyed Peas' I've Got A Feeling (2 bar difficulty):

(easy moves): Smooth, Tell 'em (with side step), Drag In, Scoop Hop, Jazz Square
(medium adds): World, Cheer Push, Ditz, Sway Roll, Sweep, Rodeo, Half Star
(hard adds): Drum Line, Shoulder Sway, Hip Check, Fill Up The Cup, Quick Shuffle, Burn The Roof

I found Cheer Push and Ditz difficult the first few times, Ditz still gets me as does Jazz Square at times. I have to assume Fill Up The Cup and Burn The Roof are both new as they are lyrics in the song (like the Word Up move in Cameo's song). Quite a few of the other moves were new to me, but again, I just might not have seen them yet in the regular game, like: World, Cheer Push, Ditz, Drum Line, Half Star.

Thanks for the breakdown! I haven't heard of those moves either and I've played all the songs on Hard except for 1 or 2 in the last tier. What style of dance would you relate it to in comparison to the other on-disc songs?

I bought Word Up last night and played through all 3 difficulties. Not a hard song once you learn the moves. Very fun, especially if you care to wave your hands in the air :D I think it was Moderate tier.

I do find it concerning that the file sizes of the DLC are so small. It was about 6MB. It's almost like you're buying the song and these new moves are already on disc, and the DLC just unlocks the routines.

It is concerning, but on the other hand, we do hope that models are programable so that they can be made to do any motion rather than just being canned animations. Code would take up a lot less space in the file than animations.

Oh, I see what you mean by tier now. I thought you were asking about easy/medium/hard.

Here's were the songs fall:

I Gotta Feeling (2 bars), comes before Crank That
Word Up (3 bars), comes after Dip It Low
Whoomp There It Is (4 bars), comes after Push It

I'd say I Gotta Feelings is very popish and current in its dance moves. Reminds me a bit of Evacuate The Dance Floor or Can't Get You Out Of My Head. Woomp has more of an urban 90s feel with moves like Snake and Dandruff. You've played Word Up and I'd say if falls somewhere in between the two (waving like you just don't care).

The Rock Band potcast made it sound as if there is quite a bit of work involved in the DLC for DC, so I'm not sure. Some of these songs are not full length so 6 or 7MB might not be too bad. I am not sure how much data the dance moves and flashcards take. Podcast (EP 30): http://www.rockband.com/community/podcast

Animation data is very small, and compresses well. It is usually just a series of keyframes applied to bones, (position, orientation and scale) at specific times, and the animation system interpolates (blends) between the positions. Mocapped or hand keyframed animations all end up the same - some pretty simple data that says "move this bone to this position, orientation and scale at this time segment".

I have no doubt that the 3d models are "skinned" with skeletal data, and then animations can be applied to those skeletons and the 3d model moves with the skeleton.

Then the music has cues which trigger animations and blend between those animations as they transition.

Anyone else having trouble with the Salsa move? I can get it 80% of the time in slow it down but only 30% at normal speed. It's usually the second (left foot forward) move that I'm missin on.

Holy shit, Phreaker you are the King Of Dance Central.

Fixed. I don't recommend it to people with a strong competitive leaderboard obsession, though. I spent a good 30 minutes beating parasight's score on Teach Me How to Jerk and my body feels it.

This is why I keep people off my leaderboard under the convenient excuse that I've maxed out my friends list.

Just brought this over to my family's pre-thanksgiving get together. Man, watching drunk aunts and uncles dance against me and my cousins [especially to teach me how to jerk it] was fucking hilarious!

That song is a workout! Damn, every move is a lunge or squat or lunging squat. :lol

Work has been kicking my ass so I haven't had a lot of time to try this out. I've pretty much done Poker face on easy :D

I can't remember, does this game list the songs by order of difficulty a la Rockband? I've having a bunch of people over saturday to get hammered and play and don't want to scare any off by initially picking a song that is too difficult

does anyone know if this game is region-free? play-asia says the US version is, but i'd like to pick up a PAL version when i visit my family for christmas if it'll work on my NTSC-J 360.

just ordered the asia-except-japan version, all is good. hope it comes soon.

in the meantime, all i have to go on is the clip from the E3 conference :lol

Yep, although I found some of the songs further down the list kind of easy on easy, like Flava In Ya Ear and Poison (gold starred on easy, first try). The next song is Teach Me How To Jerk, which I think is MUCH harder than Poison, even on easy.

I think they need to keep releasing a good mix of current and old school tunes. I'd even like to see some things that are a bit out there, like Charleston moves or swing inspired stuff. Something like Christina Aguilera's Candy Man would be a good fit for that.

Played the demo today for a few hours, it's TONS of fun. :D I'm fat and uncoordinated, so it felt nice to somewhat perform some of the complex moves of medium Poison and getting to 4 stars a few times. Break it Down is fantastic, I love slowly but steadily noticing progress as I learn or perfect moves. The menu interface is sex. Excited to get the full thing sometime this week.

Teach Me How To Jerk is the hardest song in the game, personally. :(

Aww, I think it's the most fun routine in the game! Poison is pretty awesome too.

My plan to tackle this monster is to perfect one song a day. I'm not sure if I can do it or not, the first five easiest songs are already kicking my ass. I just danced for three hours today, sooo tired.

Played the demo of this last night for the first time... I didn't really get the mirror effect so as such I was beaten at the poison song by a 59 year old woman. :lol

Managed to 5 star it on easy on my next go... but the pressure was on at that point. ;)

Incredible game, I've always been fascinated by the whole dance culture, but never actually danced myself (overweight pasty nerd = lol), so it feels so damn great to be learning dance moves and then getting to perform decently and smoothly to the beat of cool dance songs. It feels soooooo rewarding to eventually learn dance moves that at first make me go "no fuckin way I'm ever doing THAT!!".

I've played tons of great games this year, but this might be my GOTY, because unlike those other games, this actually feels fresh, something new and cool, and it makes just me feel really good while playing.

Anyone know how to get the images off this? With the other games you can upload to kinectshare or whatever it's called, but I can't seem to see how to do it on this, or where they're stored on the 360... if they are at all.

Is this functionality missing from this game? That would suck. =/
