Of course City-Link's tracker shows no change or that it's even been picked up ;_;

I've cleared the table and everything ready for it :(

Looking at upgrading TVs.

Have had an older Samsung LCD that was very solid at time of purchase six or more so years ago. Looking at a bigger size as currently have a 46 inch.

Been keying in on two different TVs. One is sticking with a Samsung LCD as I have developed some affinity to the brand. Specific model is the HU8550. 65 inch. Reviews have it as a solid 4k LCD television.

Other is going for the new tech in OLED. Was looking at the ea8800 gallery Oled tv. Not a fan of that it has to be wall mounted, but looks so nice and am fan of included good sound.

Any advice out there? Would appreciate any even if pushed towards a different OLED or 4K television. So much information out there.

TV usage would be regular use as would be the primary TV. Movies, sports, TV, etc. Would be both dark and brighter room.

Thanks in advance for any insight out there!

Well, after about 5-6 years of ownership I noticed that my professionally calibrated Pioneer 101FD seems to have burn-in. I've never had a single issue with the TV but long hours at work have led to basically only Destiny being played on the set for a couple months now with little time for anything else. The distinct outline of the HUD is clearly visible on any solid color screens. After a week of no Destiny and tons of other content and white scrolling bars the HUD has not faded even a little bit. So while I have no idea if it's permanent, I decided it was time for a more resilient set. I don't want to be afraid to play any games.

After a lot of debate I ended up ordering the Samsung 65HU9000. It gets delivered tomorrow and I can't wait to set it up. Nervous about the curve, but after staring at this and the Sony 65X900B for hours I decided the curve was more agreeable than those speakers. Sadly I had to rule the LG OLED out since I managed to mess up my plasma. The OLED has a truly stunning picture though.

It's soooooooooooooo beautiful and thin!

The speakers have an actual purpose, the curve is an annoying gimmick

It's obsession with thinness which made LED-LCD manufacturers move to inferior quality LED side-lights instead of full-array LED backlights. Quality of picture suffered so people could have orgasms at how thin their TVs were. FALD (Full-Array Local-Dimming) is making a comeback in high-end sets but it's ironic that what used to be the standard for all ordinary LCD TVs is now specifically reserved as a costly high-end feature.

I have a Panasonic TC-P50UT50 and am wondering how much the picture quality in 1080p tvs has improved in two years. Worth it to upgrade or no?

I do not care about features.

If anything, quality has gone down. If you're used to plasma and try to go with a middle of the road or worse LED, you'll be disappointed. Weak blacks, flash lighting, clouding, DSE, banding, it's all bad.

Manufacturers are only putting a real effort into high end sets, and it shows. Unless you've got OLED money to burn, I'd stick with what you got.

So I got a Samsung UN40H6350 40-Inch 1080p 120Hz LED HDTV. Anyone else have one? How is it for gaming? What are some ideal settings and what can I expect?

I think I've settled in the Vizio E500i to replace my pre-2009 26" Samsung. Just gotta wait for my Christmas bonus and/or a great sale.

Is this TV a good choice for mostly gaming/Netflix and occasional blu-ray use?

I just picked mine up Thursday night at Best Buy. It was normally priced at $800 but was $250 off at $450. It was the most money off for the size and quality I was looking for. It was also the only TV on sale in that lower price range with 4 HDMI inputs, so now I can have my PS4, PS3, ONE, and 360 all hooked up at once without having to keep switching out HDMI cables. I'm loving the set so far and 40 inches is the perfect size for my gaming room. It replaced my 8-year-old 32-inch Sharp Aquos, which I still love. It was just time for something newer and bigger. FarCry 4(PS4) and Dragon Age 3(PS4) both look stunning on it, as well as the newest X-Men movie which I watched last night on blu-ray. The opening titles and Sentinel fight scene popped so much it made the 2D version look 3D. Very impressed so far. The only thing this set is missing is said 3D, but it ain't no thang.

P.S.- I love the sleek stand and how easy the set swivels. It's also my first Smart TV :)

Edit: Here is a rundown of settings I got from a reviewer on Amazon and it did me good-

-Picture Mode Movie
-Backlight 15
-Contrast 95
-Brightness 46
-Sharpness 14
-Color 50
-Tint G50/R50
-Advance Settings
-Dynamic Contrast Off
-Black Tone Off
-Flesh Tone 0
-RGB Only Mode Off
-Color Space Auto
-10pt White Balance On
-Gamma +1
-Expert Pattern Off

Picture Options
-Color Tone Warm2
-Digital Noise Filter Off
-MPEG Noise Filter Off
-HDMI Black Level low
-Film Mode Off
-Auto Motion Plus Off

I have the 8550 60" version. I love it. Games look amazing and so does 3D and 4K content.

OLED is great but my concern was that they don't last that long.

Yeah, I know why manufacturers don't advertise input lags. You took my comment out of context. The person I quoted said "Don't trust PR input lag numbers". Which makes no sense because there are no PR input lag numbers. The only input lag results I've seen are from independent review sites.

He also claimed that Samsung is now equal to Sony in terms of input lag. Which is also false. Sony makes TV's with input lags of less than half of most of the Samsung examples he posted.

You're right about the vast majority of people not being able to notice 40ms of input lag though. I'd say most people wouldn't notice/be affected by anything under 80ms.
I hope so. I ordered a PN60F8500 that is getting delivered soon. The claims of it being horrible for gaming and having bad input lag are worrying me. It looks like someone on AVSforums said that after numerous firmware updates throughout the year and using PC mode, they have gotten their input lag down in the 30s.

My gaming TV prior to this one was a Panasonic TC-P42U2 from the fabled Black Friday 2010 $298 deal. I loved using it but a lightning strike over the summer took out all the HDMI ports. I keep thinking I should take it to a repair shop or order a couple boards that could be the problem, because I love Panasonic plasmas but I don't know; lightning can usually cause more damage than just the HDMI and it could get very costly (I can play my 360 over component just fine though, so there isn't TOO much wrong inside the set). I just feel like I can't throw it away or recycle it, there is something I should probably do because it really was a great TV, even for being their low-end plasma from those years.

Anyway, I barely noticed any lag problems on that TV and did alright in fighting games and Rock Band and FPS games. The input lag on that TV wasn't supposed to be all that great either. So hopefully if I didn't notice it on that TV then I won't notice it on the F8500.

I have the 42" UT50 and it's still got one of the best picture quality ever seen . Don't change it for any reason unless you jump to oled. It's also got fabulous low input lag, so it's a great gaming tv.

no, closest is the 55" LG Gallery OLED. I don't think you'll see any sizes under that for quite awhile.

That's a shame, my 720p kuro lacks in sharpness compared to my LED TVs that are 1080p, but the colour reproduction is just miles ahead on the Kuro. Guess I'll have to hang on for longer.

I've sent an email to Amazon about my missing order - let's see what comes of it.

OTOH, are there actually any native 120Hz TVs around?

Even though I've ordered the W7 - which I'll likely have to refund/return as I now won't be home until the 22nd - I suppose I've got another two weeks to scroll the web looking for a deal. I just have a doubt in my mind the W7 will be a big step-up in PQ over my current Dell U2711(1440p).

On Black Friday Wal-Mart had this TV http://www.vizio.com/p502uib1e.html on sale for $699, jumped all over the deal.

I was orginally someone who didn't see the point of 4k, didn't think it made a big difference...

I was wrong.

The detail is insane, it makes 1080p look bad at times.

I had a few issues with lag at first playing MLB The Show, but the TV has a Game Low Latency setting and turning that on fixed any issues I've had, haven't had an noticeable lag issues since then.

Very happy with my purchase.

So is it completely impossible to find a plasma for anyone else? I was hoping to upgrade at some point soon, and very much wanted a plasma for the PQ. OLED is obviously fantastic, but the price is still way out of reach. In the UK though, I can't even find second hand versions of the more recent Panasonic or Samsung models. It's kind of depressing. I understand the benefits of LED, but the picture quality simply isn't there for me.

i just got 58" 1080p LCD, and whoever is saying that 4k wont be a difference is probably sitting far, far away from the screen... with this kind of big screen and my seating position (2.5-3m), i can easily see huge difference between mediocre full HD streams, better full HD streams and blu-ray.

Do you play with the Orbiter on or off, though? I always play games with the Orbiter on (Kuro LX5090), as I don't want to take any chances, but is it safe to turn it off?

I'd say always play it safe, especially with a Kuro. I did this to my S60 by being stupid. It is actually more feint than this now, I adjusted the contrast because taking a picture with a phone camera doesn't really do much for detail. Has faded a bit over the past two months, but this was done with about 120 hours of Destiny over the course of 2-3 weeks. I had played BF4 so much after break-in that I didn't think anything of UI's. Then solid white Destiny happened:

3NPHxjm.png

There was probably 48-hours of pixel orbiter used when I noticed this plus 2-3 days of slideshow to no avail. As I mentioned it has slightly faded and for 95% of the time it is unnoticeable. Just happens to be really bad with green backgrounds and stands out on a white background.

That's exactly what happened to my Kuro. Too much destiny with it's extremely bright HUD. That game is horrible for Plasma TVs :(. I have been trying to remove the HUD from my set since I saw it while playing LBP3 with it's solid white loading screens. I don't think mine has faded much at all yet.

Can somebody help me out please? I'm trying to decide between two tvs right now..

1. Samsung UN55H6350 55inch 1080P tv for 799.99.

2. Sony KDL- 60R510A 1080p for 799.99.

Any experts with some advice? thanks guys.

That's a bummer. Been lurking this thread and it's making me want to upgrade, too. But I have a great 2008 model Panasonic plasma. The only negative about it is it's only 46 inch. I've moved from an apartment to a house in the years since and would like a bigger setup.

But I'm now convinced the best bet for me is use the set I have for as long as I possibly can for several more years. Then I'll jump on what will hopefully be affordable and mature OLED tech. The idea of a 60 inch TV with the same kind of pop as my Vita is just nuts to think about.

It sucks when stuff like that happens. Past a certain point how thick the tv is doesn't matter. Most people treat their electronics like fashion accessories though so making a worse, better looking, product sells better. Can look to any consumer tech division for that.

Destiny allows for you to set the screen bounds, though. I will adjust the HUD settings to some random size every day or two of playing Destiny. That, plus the Orbiter, has helped tremendously in my 150+ hours of playing the game.
Sadly I had to rule the LG OLED out since I managed to mess up my plasma. The OLED has a truly stunning picture though.
I wonder just how resilient the OLEDs are, in terms of burn-in, though.

looking at getting this Samsung 55" LED UN55H6300AFXZA from costco for $770

any info on this one as far as input lag and such?

I recently got a 4K LED with HDMI 2.1 or whatever so 4K @60hz. But obviously PS4 and Xbox One only outputs at 1080p. I was wondering, I've heard 4k TV's upscale with UHD or whatever.

Do I have to do something in the settings, or does it just auto do that? It looks fuckin incredible either way. Looks much better then any TV I've had.

If the game is filling the entire screen it is being upscaled.

Okay. Sorry for the dumb question. That makes sense. The screen is gorgeous, and looks amazing. Not sure if its because the upscale, or if its just a better TV then what I had. Either way, I'm happy.

I had a question, so what is the 4k @ 60 Hz HDMI slot even for then? I mean, movies at 4k don't run at that. So what would run at that? Kind of confused.

EDIT: I assume that, all of my 4k slots @ 30 hz HDMI when upscaling 1080p will do 120 hz (as that is what the TV says for 1080). It would only do 30 hz if it was actual 4k content? I think? So that is why I was kind of confused by why there was a slot specifically for 60 hz. I'm currently using my PS4 on the 60 hz slot.

Another common sense answer. Derp. I feel stupid. Thanks a lot for the quick replies, and putting up with my dumb questions.

I was just paranoid that the 30hz thing was an issue with the 1080p content. But I guess it doesn't matter. What is sweet is, my TV comes with like 6 slots. My old TV only had 3 HDMI slots, so I had to juggle out one device (I have apple TV, Xbox One, PS4 and Wii U). Now I can have them all hooked up.

Sooo good. :)

EDIT: Shit, I actually have a gaming rig. However, I'm only rockin 2gb GTX 680's in SLI. Maybe I'll invest in some new graphics cards that can actually do 4k. That would be freakin sweet.

The 4k @30hz are possibly slower HDMI ports or passing through something with a lower bandwidth so they cant pass through something that is sending a 60hz (fps) signal

The 4k @60hz port likely has a higher bandwidth HDMI interface.

I would have thought it was kind of weird they dont all do the same refresh, but maybe there is a component cost difference there or something, I dont really know.

120hz is just a frame interpolation thing that is done via the tv and doesnt effect the incoming signal from an external source, its done in post processing by the tvs software.

What tv is it?

http://www.vizio.com/p502uib1e.html

It's a Vizio. It's not the best TV, so maybe it's just cheap. Thing is, I normally wouldn't buy a cheap TV. But I already had credit at Walmart from something a long time ago I forgot about. And so I scored it for $500 during the sales (with the credit applied on the sale). So for $500, I can't complain. I figure, even if the TV goes out then it's just $500. Granted, I'm not laughing at the price. I've just invested a lot more money in the past.

So maybe that explains why it has 30 hz 4K hdmi and one 60hz one. Cheap brand, cheap parts.

All I know is, it looks infinitely better then my last TV which was a 1080p LED. I read up online about all the flaws on this TV, but in the end decided to pull the trigger. Because the price was good, and it does look amazing.

That said, maybe it's not a true 4K tv. So if I really want a good 4K I'll just have to get something in a year or two when prices drop. *shrugs*

It's a little bizarre Microsoft were constantly touting 4K support for Xbox One but it never actually materialised. Not even the UI is 4K.

I think my downfall was that I changed the orbiter to mode 1 for a movie and never put it back to mode 2 for 1080p gaming. But I am not the only one playing destiny here. My better half plays as well, and much more than me, so there has been probably 300-400 hours of Destiny.

For 3500 dollars I wasn't willing to take the chance on OLED at this time. I also wanted a bigger set. I went with the Samsung 65HU9000. I actually love it. The curve is much more subtle than I expected. Also, though I can tell that the contrast is lower than my Kuro was in some scenes, for the most part the contrast looks shockingly good. I was really scared of LCD after 7 years of Kuro viewing between my 1150HD and 101FD. A welcome change has been the lack of that plasma dithering noise. I didn't realize how much there was from my 9 foot viewing distance. So after two days in and it's been great for the most part. My biggest complaint is that I am completely not used to poor LCD viewing angles.

LCDs have contrast ratios as good as plasmas these days when you realize that even though they can't quite reach the black level of a plasma, their white levels are much higher. The resulting ratio is basically no different in real world viewing.

In reality the black level of my 65X900A isn't as good as my 65VT60 but the color gamut and relative contrast is every bit as good. Both TVs are self calibrated.
