Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

Be aware that LG TV's, not sure if it's just some or all, have global dimming that you can't adjust. Here's more info. Before I got my Sony, I picked up an LG at Costco, thinking it wouldn't be too distracting, but it made watching movies unbearable.

Bought a Sony 55" 4k. The screen I got was cracked in the top left, the build quality was disappointing. LG is me next option me thinks. >_>

After reading about that and a few other issues I think I'll go with the Samsung. Now I just need to price hunt. Thanks.

I would say LED with low input lag is best for gaming until 4K OLED becomes affordable (unless you're just ballin like that).

I have the SONY KDL-60W850B and the low input lag is great for gaming. Not to mention it looks good, and I can control my PS4 and PS3 with my remote. Sony TVs also seem to have the lowest input lag of all TV brands overall. I'm thinking of getting the 65" 950B or waiting for a little longer to get a 4K display.

I just got the KDL40 for my room. What settings should I use for optimal image quality?

Want to buy a 4ktv for pc gaming. I understand the importance of chroma 4:4:4 because of the clarity of text at 4k, but I actually don't intend to use it as my pc monitor.

I have a 1080p monitor I use for web browsing, emails, work, etc. I'd only switch to the TV when playing games I can run at 4k with my Sli'ed GTX 970s. I know VRAM at 4k is going to be a problem in the future for my 970s, but so far I've been enjoying quite a few games at 1620p-4k at 60fps on mostly maxed settings.

Back to the point, would purchasing a 4ktv that only supports 4:2:0 affect the picture quality and performance in games if I'd only use it for that?

I picked up the Sony KDL55W700B (a Best Buy exclusive) a few weeks ago and highly recommend it. The input lag is nonexistent, picture is great, and the smart TV features (which I didn't plan on using at all) are really cool.

If i get this with the 48 in version is the input lag still the same?

I have some points, and I can get 48 in. one for $430 with free shipping I believe. Seems like a pretty good deal, that's the cheapest I've seen one.

I got the %0 inch version and i love it too, great picture and value, btw you have calibration setting for this sucker?

This is not strictly true. Owning 2 Panasonic Plasmas I can tell you that image retention is a real thing, but is only ever noticeable at all on largely monochrome scenes (primarily on scenes where black is the dominant color). So it's not a big problem, for sure.

For me it's a huge problem. My Panasonic Plasma just died and I can't wait to never have another Plasma again. I agree it's really not that noticeable but I'm the type of person that once I know something is there I constantly notice it.

Got this Polaroid 4k display for $369

I just used this to calibrate my TV.... wish I could set tint but with digital(HDMI) connections the TV greys out that option. If and when someone gets the service menu code we could adjust tint.

brightness 42

contrast 32

color 63 <This might change if I were able to adjust tint

tint 50 *cannot adjust*

color temp normal

Saw the LG OLED on sale for $2k via Ebay yesterday and wanted it so bad...wife says no and then I remember this year they'll have the new models. Can't wait for them to come out and see the prices so I can jump on the 4k models, non curved if possible.

But in the meantime, if the curved one hits a crazy price I'll grab that instead.

Has anyone bought a cheap tv for their consoles recently?

Im looking for 39" and up...120hz would be nice, but not nessary. And just not horrible input lag. But want to pay as little as possible.

My back up 6 year old 40" Toshiba finally died (no pic, just sound)...so need a new one....or maybe repair it. :/

can anyone recommend me a 40" tv for $500 or less?

i recently got a samsung un40eh5000 and I'm not terribly impressed with the picture quality.. the colors are not quite as vibrant as i hoped for, even adjusting the settings multiple times

thinking of returning it for something else.. possibly a sony? I've always had sonys in the past and had good experiences with them

I don't need a smart tv but if that's the best recommendation im up for it

My LG OLED arrived today, completely blown away by this TV, it's so good :)

How's the colour tinting? I've read it's pretty bad, especially on grey skies or greyscale content. That and poor motion resolution are the only things stalling me from replacing my beloved Panny VT60 with this TV.

Bloodborne HUD burned its way onto my GT50 :( Add that to parts of the Plants Versus Zombies HUD as well lol.

Love the TV for IQ and black levels but the most addictive games are a pain with their HUDs.

Luckily only really noticeable on white backgrounds.

Screen uniformity seems very good I only notice tint issues on a grey background off angle. Either I've gotten lucky or LG has improved on this, my unit has a Jan 2015 manufacturing date.

By the way, Bloodborne looks stunning on this TV. Quite the showcase for OLED tech.

Same issue; IR with Bloodborne and my PN64H500 Samsung, slightly visible on a gray test patern.

Night of IR and cartoons this morning and it's almost gone. How is HUD transparency not an default option yet from Devs?

Soooo had no intention of buying anything soon and now I'm waiting on my Sony HW55 delivery ... Had a deal too good to pass, and pulled the trigger.
Anybody has any experience first hand on this ? I've seen a LOT of good review and user's returns on this, can't wait to try this. Coming from a BENQ W1070 hope it'll be a significant upgrade as I think.

Anyone know when the 2015 Sony full HD (not 4k) TVs are supposed to hit? I've seen some sites say February, but they're still MIA.

Sony tvs (hd and 4k) tend to drop a bit later than other companies but we're getting there. No official release dates yet, but should be late April to early June at the absolute latest.

Hi, not sure if this the right thread to ask this.

I recently bought a used Samsung PN51D8000 plasma TV and I'm trying to calibrate my TV so that my games look sharp , crisp, and glassy like they have on display models. I looked online for calibrating settings and when I calibrate my TV, the image isn't as sharp or crisp.

Any ideas hot to make games look sharp, crisp and glossy?

Look for setting in this thread: http://www.avsforum.com/forum/167-p...ng-2011-pnxxd8000-thread-no-price-talk-4.html

Also realize that display sets in the store tend to actually ruin the IQ in the name of making things bright, high contrast, and saturated. Like fat and sugar in crap food, it draws people to it but ultimately it's no good.

You lose a lot of subtle color, light gradient, crush highlights, ect.

Hello TV GAF,

I don't know a bloody thing about TVs and what to buy, so I'm wondering if you may be able to recommend a few to me. What I'm looking for is a TV, between 36-45", that will really make Wii U games pop. I want them to look as nice as is possible and not have to worry about this lag that I've been reading about.

Any help is very much appreciated. Thank you!

Anyone know how to stop Samsung smart Tv's from constantly displaying "service notification messages" every time the Tv is turned on ?? (scrolling service message across the top of the screen about some pointless bullshit).

Hey guys, does anyone have the Sony Bravia W600 or W700 series? Are they good for all around blu-ray and console gaming? I have a ES6100 from 2012 now, and the 2014 W6 or W7 are pretty cheap. Can the automatic dimming be turned off?

probably not the right place to ask .. not sure where to ask. but anyone have the lip sync issue with the ps4 using the 1080p/24hz feature? I got a new TV a few months ago (Sony 4K), and I didn't have the issue with blurays on my last TV.. but now on this one the lip sync is off. I've googled the issue apparently it's a "known" thing, but no fix. Most people say they can adjust their received to fix it. Unfortunately for me, since I'm using the Z-5500s as my surround I don't have that option.

Am I just SOL until I bite the bullet and buy a "true" surround sound system?

Sony rep told me and of March or early April. So sounds like it's close.

Automatic dimming can be turned off. It's in another menu other than the "options" one. It's under Eco settings in the home menu.

Thanks for the info about the dimming. You mention that a Sony rep estimated early April for 2015 1080p models, did they mention the price as well? The W7 42" I'm looking at are 600$, but if the 2015 models are ~200 more, I would wait for them.

Some partial info is up on the store.sony.ca

50" 850C preorders for 1299.99 CAD, will be available 04-06-2015, so tomorrow unless they use the American date format in which it would be June 4th?

I think I'll just go for the 2014 W7 since it is 600$ and same as W8 2014 minus the 3D.

He didn't have any price info, I'd suspect you're going to pay $800-900 for the 50" 2015 1080p. They will keep that basic 4K model as close as a price point as possible so people will want to upgrade to 4K and might have a chance on being upsold to the higher models. I've had the W7 and been sharing ISF calibration settings for it since I got it calibrated. It's a good TV, I'd recommend it. Right now I have the W950. To me the 2015 1080p model seems a bit suspect, sounds to me like Sony is going all in on 4K sets like the other manufacturers. Though the 1080p 2015 model might have android OS, so that's sort of cool.

Where can I find the calibration settings for the W7/W8? W9 has triluminous right? So can't use those calibrations. I want one for Blu-ray's and another calibration for gaming, with game mode and such.

Any thoughts on the LG Electronics 39LB5600? Going to use it for console gaming and watching films.

Wish I could see the ms of the monitor.

I have the 42" version and for the price I love it. Response time is solid, around 27.8 MS, and I haven't noticed too many issues even with fast paced games like Smash Bros Wii U. I haven't extensively tried to calibrate it but I've messed around a bit and colors seem a bit on the cooler side, but again for a budget HDTV you kind of have to keep your expectations in check. Inputs and outputs are incredibly limited (2 HDMI, 1 component/composite hybrid, and optical out), so be sure to pick up a cheap HDMI switcher off amazon with it if you want to use more than two systems on it.

Already thinking of upgrading my Sony w900a
Welp!
Haha, really? What's wrong with it? Thought it was one of the absolute best sets out there?

And here I am, still watching a TV manufactured in 2009.. Granted, it's a Kuro and I bought it brand new in 2012, but still..
