Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

it's better, for sure, but not a huge step up picture quality wise from the EF9500.

What it does way better is picture uniformity, a very narrow band of near black, and Dolby Vision is a treat on it.

Yeah I know of the better uniformity, DV, and near black performance. What I'm more interested in is the input lag and just how much better the near black performance is in the 1-3% IRE range. Also the increase DCI p3 coverage compared to the EF. I have a few HDR movies I want to check out to see how they compare between the 2.

The Xfinity UHD Sampler app looks to be the only way to get some UHD HDR Olympic content through Comcast.

Yeah.

The rumor was since the Olympics are a NBC thing aka a Comcast thing that Comcast would try and ateasy have their HDR box out. It's still in "testing" though. They announced new boxes fucking ages ago, but they've done jack shit hardware wise to the public.

Other than the big X1 platform update a few years back now that was like X1 2.0 they've been coasting. Whenever corporate is asked bout the new boxes it's always coming soon™.

And you're not going to tell us which movie?

My first UHD Blu-Ray I watched was on Sunday. It was Batman vs. Superman UE. which I had avoided in the theaters. There were some moments that I was very impressed by HDR. Particularly the final battle. And, surprisingly, I actually liked the film. It wasn't great, but it wasn't as horrible as I've read. Though I have read that the UE fixes quite a bit.

It was Batman vs Superman UE too. The UE fixes a lot in my opinion, it gives the movie "the glue" it needed to not feel so over the place and jumpy. Some things still are pretty WTF IMO, but it's way better.

Also some parts of Mad Max. Boy does Mad Max look incredible in HDR.

The FCC needs to mandate allowing the use of third-party boxes already.

Abzû makes me wish I already had myself a 4K OLED TV. Looks stunning playing it on PS4 with a ZT60, but I imagine it'd be a sight to behold running 4K/60hz on one of those current-gen LG OLED TVs. I know that'll be the first game I pop in to play the day I finally get my hands on one of those sets.

I thought maybe there was a timeline expected. I'm not going to hold my breath until Microsoft flat out says "bitstream in X update." It could take weeks or months before the feature is implemented, tested, public tested, and then released.

True, but he brought it up as an additional specific comment. It wasn't a question DF asked specifically. They asked about what updates are coming. He could have chosen any feature they were working on and mentioned it. He specifically chose to mention new bitstream options and that it's being worked on. It is no longer an IF ms is working on it, its When itll be released.

So with that in mind, i think it will be sooner than later. Ybarra needs to chime in though for the real time-line.

Yes, it is a bit sad we had to give feedback to ask them to include a standard feature that is in many blu-ray players, but atleast we are getting some type of confirmation it will come.

Surprisingly, Trine 2 is beautiful to play and it's 3D as well.

I have a question about the Screen Share option on the LG EC9300

I use my phone that has Crunchyroll app installed to stream anime to the TV but there's no sound at all and so far i have no luck trying to get that to work. Does anyone know?

Via TV it uses the app Screen Share and on the phone (Oneplus 3) it's the Cast option.

I mean in general. Why is an LCD so expensive? My retinas can only handle so much brightness.

Keep in mind those are MSRP prices. From what I saw on the AVS Forum the 65" can already be pre-ordered for at least $1,000 lower than MSRP. Also keep in mind there are 3 TV sizes here. The MSRP on the 75" is $10k. Checking LG's website, the MSRP on a 77" OLED is $25k

http://www.lg.com/us/tvs/lg-77EG9700-oled-tv

It doesn't look like larger size OLEDs are a thing yet, so the Sony has no competition from it on the 100" front.

As for brightness, it's not about the overall brightness of the entire image, but the brightness in parts of the image in HDR scenes to provide a greater contrast.

Hi everyone!
I'm currently thinking of switching out my Panasonic Viera 50" ST60 plasma I've had since 2013. I'm looking at the Samsung 55" KS7000 (KS8000 in the US).
I still like the ST60, especially the blacks and the PQ, but my living room is quite bright and even more so during the spring and summer months here in Sweden. The ST60 really requires dark conditions to shine, and apart from that it's starting to feel aged. I don't know, maybe it's me...

Anyway, I'm fully aware that the Sammy won't hit the black levels of the Panny, but the input lag is better, the resolution plus HDR is much better and also the power consumption on the Sammy is better.

Anyone with the KS7000 (or US KS8000 model) who can give an input on the black levels etc? Will I be dissapointed? :S

So that'd help with really bright lights that clip on OLED right? sounds like a cool tv - always nice to have competing tech.

If only it were as simple as "OLED doesn't get bright enough" then I would have bought one a long time ago.

I think that's the only area where OLED falls "short" in comparison to competing LCD models; HDR content not being as bright.

So, what's stopping you from buying OLED? :P

Looks like another OLED sale is happening.

55" B6/C6: $2,500
65" B6/C6: $4,000

55" E6: $3,500
65" E6: $5,000

For those who bought one recently, check your return period. You might be able to get some money back

Is this a "sale" for a limited time, or is it a price drop?

This fall I want to redecorate my living room and then buy a 65" OLED for the finishing touch, but if I buy it now I might take the lazy way out and not redecorate. :p

It's not as simple as that. I have listed the problems with OLED and HDR content on the last page.

I haven't seen a comparison myself and I'm contemplating between OLED and the new Sony but it looks like it's mostly agreed that the 940d beats the OLED in motion, upscaling, and shadow detail.

The new Sony only looks to be about a week or two out so it's worth it to just see if it lives up to the hype. If it doesn't you can just get the oled for the price it has today.

I know this thread is primarily for TV's, but since I solved that problem a few days ago, I think I should start looking for a receiver. I'm also contemplating wireless speakers.

Any suggestions?

I am SO FUCKING IRATE right now.

Best buy delivers my TV this afternoon. I go to open it up just now and realize that the top part is sort of open. I get my TV out the box and realize that Best Buy has shipped me a fucking TV without the remote, the stand, the cables, and any instructions. The entire foam part where they should have been stored is missing.

Doom looks amazing at 4K too.

I'm not up to speed on receivers right now as I'm still clinging to my high-end Onkyo... Though 4K is making that tough.

That said on wireless speakers: don't

I'd be so livid. What did Best Buy say when you reported it?

God Dammit, I regret clicking on this thread.

Now I started researching a replacement for my VT60 and read about the LG E6.

I want it so bad. ;_;

Someone talk me out of it before I do something foolish.

Wait a couple of weeks for reviews on the Sony Z9 series to see how it compares.

Picked up a C6 last month, worth every penny. Gaming on this thing is amazing @ 4K. I know you have a Pascal Titan so dooo it.

Help me GAF, I just moved into a new apartment and I'm trying to decide between a 55" LG B6/C6 and a 65" Vizio P65.

My last set was the last-generation Panasonic S60. I moved cross-country and decided against shipping it. So, I need a new TV. And I can't decide between picture quality and size. Not to mention the Vizio is $500 cheaper.

And no, the 65" B6 is not an option. $4000 is too rich for my blood.

Side note: anyone in South Florida in the market for a pretty nice 60" plasma?

Do it, you won't regret it. I have a 500M and a ZT60 and picked up an OLED and it is a worthy upgrade.

Don't get the B6. It has higher input lag than the C6

You can't go wrong with either the C6 or the P65-C1. Faced with the same decision, I wound up choosing the Vizio. I had a specific set of criteria when upgrading from my Kuro Elite 9th Gen 50". I knew I wanted to go 4K, be as future-proof as I possibly could, and I wanted to upgrade to 65" and no other size. For $2000 it was hard to pass up the Vizio. I bought the Vizio just to see if it was even a worthy successor, intending to return it, if not. I was so impressed by the picture quality and performance that, all, the thing still sits in my living room. :P

For $2000 I am ready for the Neo/Scorpio, while I can wait and see how the OLED tech progresses, if it drops in price, and/or if any new companies take up the technology.

Also, I'm sorry, but I don't understand anyone seriously considering the ZD9 when, for the same price, an OLED can be had.

Man, I'm really looking forward to a UHD Blu-ray for Pacific Rim.
Agreed. It's the only reason why I haven't sprung for the Vudu download yet. I just love that higher bitrate on physical and want to make sure my retinas are truly fried by the image quality of Pacific Rim (and I love the movie).

So I finally pulled the trigger and got a new Sony 810c and I want this one to last as long as possible. Will it harm the tv to have it close to my monitor( a little over 2 ft between them) I am looking on google atm,but so far my fu is failing me on this issue.

I could make them space bigger, but I want to still run an hdmi over an use the set as my main display. The monitor and tv would be on at the same time when my wife wants to watch something and I want to game, witch would be fairly often.

No, no harm in having the two together. This would have been an issue with CRTs, with their electromagnetic field, but we are beyond that, thankfully.

This only applies for the 65". Forthe 75" range OLED is $15k more and there is no equivalent for the 100" range.

For the 65" range we will have to wait for proper reviews and user feedback but this tech has a chance to offer the best blacks and highest luminescence on an LCD to date. From the very few impressions we got so far it compared favorably against the OLED TV. We'll see if it keeps that up in more controlled comparisons.

I have high hopes for the ZD9. Hope Sony doesn't fuck it up.

What I want:
- faster OS
- low/decent latency HDR gaming
- good panel quality

Especially if Neo supports HDR they need to get HDR gaming right on their flagship model. Everything else would be a complete joke.

I can't for the life of me imagine what could make this TV worth the money. It's OLED money for an LCD panel.

Scroll down a bit for impressions. The z9 compared favorably against both the LG OLED TV and the Sony reference OLED display, amongst other sets. That's enough for people to at least sit up and take notice.

Soon we'll know if it lives up to the hype when reviews are done.

Honestly, I was leaning in the same direction. I was thinking the same about waiting to see how OLED progresses/drops in price. Also, I know I won't be happy with the drop in size to a 55" TV after getting used to the 60" plasma.

In any case, it does help to hear from another plasma user that the Vizio P65 holds up.

If it lives up to Sony's claims, it will provide a much better HDR presentation than OLED. The higher peak brightness should eliminate clipping.

And in addition to this set having very little of LCD/LED's common drawbacks, Sony's TV's generally have the best motion handling and 4K upscaling.

In any case, the link posted above should be informative as well.

Too bad I can't afford to buy it or a 2016 OLED :)

That's a Sony event for a Sony TV. You bet they'll show material that highlights their TV's strenghts.

They made another one for the X93D and the OLED looked like utter shit next to it. Too bad you NEVER watch TV in those condition or with those settings, so these "tests" are useless. They're just obvious marketing.

The new OLED range from LG can be made to look shit very easily. If I set my brightness on my B6 one notch too high, it makes anything HD-quality and below, look poor. It is a very unforgivable set when you feed it sub-par material.

Yeah balancing brightness can be hit or miss on these. It's hard to go from a beautiful 4K source to something older.

Stranger Things in 4K sometimes looks like it was shot to promote OLED though. There are plenty of scenes with a completely black background and one or two illuminated figures. Gorgeous. Also the show is great.

High-quality 1080p sources (games/blu-ray) don't look great?
