Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

Well, I decided it was time to replace my aging Kuro with something new and LG's 4K OLED is it.

I was thinking about it already, but the sale price at best buy ($1000 off) and the 24 month financing pushed me over the edge.

65" OLED B6P has been ordered. It'll be delivered in just over 2 weeks. (needed time to clean up and make room for it).

Anyone have any suggestions for keyboard and mouse couch gaming? I was thinking about a corsair lapdog or something like that, but I'm a pretty large person, so there isn't very much room in my lap for a keyboard. I'm open to suggestions if anyone has any.

I really wish I still had my 10% off coupon from when I moved.... Anybody got a spare? ;)

Edit: Do you guys think Best Buy will offer better deals on the B6 during Black Friday sales?

Question: I have a 4K TV, but sadly I bought it before HDR was being introduced. Since most (if not, all?) 4K movies now feature HDR is it just going to look horrible on my TV, or will there be a way to make it look good.

it won't look horrible. They have SDR playback layers too.

You just won't get the benefit of HDR

+1

Physical media is dying. But physical will always be around for the enthusiast.
But even as an enthusiast myself I can tell you as soon as we can download uncompressed 4k movies ill be ditching my Samsung 4k Blu Ray player

an uncompressed 4k movie would be around 4TB lol

So, I'll be moving to a nice new apartment on Sept 1st. (a week before PlayStation Meeting!) Might as well get a 4K TV.

size: 55-60"
brand: LG. Philips, or maybe Samsung.
HDR: yes
price: $800 max.

What are my best options?

Your best option is probably to wait until Black Friday.

For serious keyboard and mouse gameplay from the couch, the Lapdog is your best bet. It's full size, wired and comfy. Yes, it is essentially a board with foam on the bottom. But it has good cable management and imo fits the couch niche perfectly. The keyboard itself is flush in the case which is really cool, and it comes with a power cord for the USB hub which is a plus. The only downside is that, since it's huge, storing it away is not easy. Also while wired is an advantage since no batteries, it's also wired, so - cords suck.

The roccat sova also exists, which I've heard good things about, but I think it is an all in one solution, which I'm not as much of a fan of (as in I don't know if the keyboard or mouse would be replaceable). Might be worth looking into, as I know the least about it? Not even sure if it released yet.

For really light browsing I'd say the Razer turret is worth a glance because its wireless, folds up nicely and comes with a mouse that's lightly magnetized. It also has a charging station and is the only item on this list that isn't difficult to move or put away. For competitive play I imagine it'd be a nightmare since the mouse pad is small, the mouse itself is tiny and the hinge where the keyboard meets the pad is flimsy.

The couchmaster can get fucked now that the lapdog exists. Build quality is terrible. The only advantage is that it comes with cushions so the board itself doesn't sit on your lap. It feels like a damn battlestation. It did allow me to add a ton of stuff like a nice mic and camera for twitch. But God the setup and comfort was just atrocious. It's super heavy with no padding on the bottom, and the ragged plastic it's made of is embarrassing. Oh and it's "special" USB cable that is so magical that the USB hub somehow doesn't need a power cord is a bullshit claim. And the hub itself is flimsy and easily beaten by a $5 hub from Amazon.

So yeah. If money isn't an issue and you're actually gonna play competitive PC games, I'm of the opinion that the Lapdog and the Sova are your best bet.

Honestly I don't play competitive anything, just want the option of keyboard and mouse for first person games.

right now I'm actually leaning towards something like this -

it's lowest height is 28", which I believe would put it in comfortable range for using my keyboard and mouse from the couch.

Hi all, thanks for the informative thread. I've narrowed the field to two options and I'd appreciate any feedback and opinions.

It's between the Vizio P-65 ($2,799 Canadian) vs 55" LG OLED B6 ($3,499 CDN).

I primarily game on a PC monitor, so that's not a driving motivation for the display.
I watch movies, TV and sports in relatively equal amounts.

I'm looking for the best value option for a future proof set. I've seen the B6 in store, but the Vizio isn't on display at any local stores.

Is the $700 difference for a smaller B6 display justified?

Thanks a lot!!!

To end my issue. I've tried an expensive active HDMI cable rated for 4K. Result: No success.

I've looked around and the only cable that would be long enough (10M) and would be capable of 4K 4:4:4 seems to be a Monster cable, it has the correct bandwidth, but that costs a small fortune. So that's a no go. I've rearranged everything, moved my PC closer, and used a short cable to get everything working. 2M HDMI cable to my PC, 5M displayport cable to my monitor and a 5M USB 3.0 extension cable for the keyboard and mouse.

Not the solution I wanted, but it's better than spending a small fortune on a single cable in my eyes.

How are 4k sets with so so scaling (think vizio p series) for emulation and playing pixel style indies like Nuclear Throne, Towerfall, etc.?

Nice, if you can use a desk like that, even better. I have a couch that doesn't quite allow it, so I usually just roll steam controller for FPS games.

So I've put around 500 hours into the E6 and I've not had any image retention or burn-in yet. This is using streaming apps, PS4 and PC. The TV does a good job with screensavers and dimming to prevent it.

Didn't have any on my 2009 Panasonic plasma either.

Only saw a bit of the PS4 menus when checking near black test slides right after gaming on my E6, but other than that never. And it's gone after a while anyways.

I have just seen this TV on Amazon and it looks pretty good for the price.

Would love to hear from someone if you think it I should get it or if there is a better one.

LG UH750V 49 inch

I can't comment on that model specifically, but the thing to look out for on cheap LG's are so called "Faux-K" or "Fake-K" 4K panels. They use a WRGB pixel structure that substitutes a White subpixel for either the R, G, or B in each trio. With colored material, this represents a 25-33% resolution loss (so they're technically 3K displays or less). It's "legal" to sell them as 4K because the standards resolution patterns are black and white (which it passes), not color

I've mentioned my struggle in previous posts, but what do you guys think about the KS8000 vs the B6. KS8000 is currently $1500 and very tempting. I feel like the 55" B6 will be around $2000 by the holidays though at this rate. Should I just hold out? I'm not necessarily in a hurry to upgrade, but will most likely make a purchase prior to Christmas.

Yeah, B6 easily.

I'm in the exact same boat as you with those two TVs. One thing to consider on price is the KS8000 with also be going down in price this holiday too. I predict the B6 with be $2000 and the KS will be $1000. So thats still a pretty hefty difference if you ask me.

You think it will land around the $2k price range? I'm a little worried about input lag too.

A $500 discount at Black Friday/Christmas should be on the cards surely.

Input lag in game mode is fine on the B6 from the owner impressions I've read but the jury's still out on HDR gaming. All I can say is, get the C6 (curved) for the same price for lower input lag in Game and HDR modes.

I'm very happy with my E6's performance with games after coming from a 16ms Panasonic plasma. I've found 50ms lag outside of Game mode to not be noticeable at all.

I bought the LG OLED 55 Curved , Worst decision i have ever made regarding TV shopping.
This TV have my Chrome bookmarks bar burnt in to the screen all the time and the only way i can remove it is by shutting down the TV for 30 minutes or more.
Thought i got faulty TV and i can get it replaced by working unit and i was wrong, It turned out to be a known issue with OLED TVs when used with computers or anything with still image.

I'm coming from a Panasonic plasma as well. Not a big fan of curved TVs though. Is there a noticeable difference in lag between the C6 and B6?

Well that's discouraging.

What model is that? EC9300, EG9100 or C6?

If it's a 2015 OLED and you're keeping OLED light at a high value it's perfectly normal. You have to spend the first 100-300 hours with OLED light at no more than 40 (i used 40 for everything and 48 for games on my EG9100, never had visible retention). If it's a C6 it's odd, but you should probably lower the OLED light anyway when it's new. It can be a bit annoying at first, but you should adjust pretty quickly. It's worth it.

If you can't, maybe you should consider replacing it with something like the Samsung KS8000.

It's this model http://www.lg.com/sg/tvs/lg-55EC930T

I have the OLED light at 75 (i didn't know that i should keep it lower than that)
Also i have already used it for more than 100 hours at 75...should i lower it now? it doesn't look good at all lower than 75 and things look dark as hell.

It's the 2014 model that came out before the EG910V, and 75 for the break in period is definitely too high. Try it at less than 50 for a while and see if you can adjust to that, also don't use high values for brightness and sharpness (use a calibration software like AVS 709 to calibrate contrast, brightness, colors and don't keep sharpness over 20 for both H and V values). After 300 hours you can use higher values for OLED light, but not for PC usage.

Anyway OLED light can't make things look darker, as it doesn't impact contrast/brightness values. If you lower it, it can look a bit dim at first, but i actually found it very relaxing and pleasing for the eyes after a while. If you want to pass those 200 hours fast use Winamp+Milkdrop, but remember to let the TV run a compensation cycle every 6-7 hours of usage (turn off the TV for an hour).

Hey everyone. I posted a couple of pages back about which OLED TV to go with and decided on the 60' E6. I'm moving in October so I'm planning on getting that TV and everything else that same weekend.

But I can use your guys help once again on this front: AV Receiver.

I have never owned an AV receiver so any suggestions that you guys would think I should keep an eye on would be appreciated. I have been looking at the Sony STR-DN1070 but it doesn't have Atmos or DTS: X (don't know if I need them though). I could also use some suggestions on speakers, sub, etc as well since I have no idea what to look for. I keep hearing about ELAC and how good their stuff is but have yet to hear it for myself.

I would like to look for a AV receiver at around $1,000.
As for speakers, subs, channels, etc I would like the budget would be about $1,500.

I'm probably overestimating but the more head-room I can give you guys, I think it will be for the best.

Thanks in advance.

Can't wait to see the 2017 LG OLED TVs! Might need to upgrade for Scorpio :D

I'm wanting to go ahead and upgrade before the Scorpio arrives, but perhaps I'd be better off just buying a 2016 model once the 2017s are released.

Keep me/us posted on your decision. I'm really considering just getting a KS8000. Wish I never went to Best Buy and saw it setting next to the B6, but it's also good to remember that lighting will be far different from the show floor in pretty much any home. I'm curious as to whether the B6 will feel bright enough in a dimmed or dark room.

If I weren't in a rush to upgrade I'd wait for price drops or 2017 models (which will obviously be expensive).

You can't go wrong with a 2016 model though. Love every inch of my E6. <3

Personally, I would not worry about the 2016 OLEDs not being bright enough. At default settings HDR content in a dimmed room gets too bright unless I use the dark room preset or turn down the OLED light.

I'm sure the 2017 OLEDs will get even brighter (LG doubled the nits from last year's, up to 800 from 400), but I'm fine with the capability of the current sets.

I'm going with the KS8000. It performs incredibly in game mode with HDR. Like 23 milliseconds. 😸 OLED is just too expensive.

This is new. I thought there wasn't a set out there that works with hdr in game mode...?

Also, the lack of Dolby vision on an issue? Or no 1080p @ 120fps?

Have been considering this set but the above two points combined with high price in Canada makes me pause.

Here's the quote from Rtings.com "That's correct, for HDR support it is necessary to use HDMI 1 - 4 on the Vizio P. We measured an input lag of 62.1ms when sending an HDR signal with 'Game Low Latency' on HDMI1 on the Vizio P. This is quite high for gaming, and will be an issue for a lot of people. The KS8000 is a good choice. We found that when sending an HDR signal, it is necessary to set the color space to 'Native' but then it successfully plays HDR content even with the 'Game' special picture mode. We measured the input lag with HDR metadata and 'Game' mode enabled to be 22.6ms". Someone was asking about the best TV for their XBOX one s. I'm sold on this fact

Ahh I know. And there lies my dillemma. Price isn't as much of a factor as I'm confident the B6 will hit $2k. So tempted to just go pick up a KS8000 tonight for $1500 though. I also worry about the KS8000 not having Dolby Vision IIRC. On the other hand, if input lag is excessively noticeable on the B6 in HDR mode then that's literally a game changer.

Thanks, this makes me feel better about the brightness. I'm the worst shopper to have every existed; I'm too indecisive. Definitely going with KS8000 or B6 though.

My E6 is bright enough.

The best part is I have no glare or reflections during daytime viewing thanks to the anti-reflective filter and the brightness itself which is a huge relief because I thought a glossy panel would result in being a glare magnet.

My 2009 Panasonic plasma was not watchable during the day when the sun was out. So glad it's not the case with the E6. Now I can enjoy using the TV whenever I want.
