Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

So I've been skipping around in this thread and reading various other sites. I've seen the input lag examples and gifs and such, and I understand the science, BUT:

Has anyone with a ST60 actually had a first-hand poor experience with input lag? Or even any anecdotal tales? It seems like the only downside to the TV, but I can't seem to find anyone actually complaining about it. Like, not a single thing.

Stillmatic posted a bunch of gifs comparing the lag on a monitor vs the ST60:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=88500488&postcount=2856

I don't think it looks very responsive, especially in the MW3 comparison. On the monitor the gun begins firing while he's pressing down, but on the ST60 it doesn't begin until he's pulling his finger away.

Edit: I should read, since I guess you've seen it already.

Get a plasma, trust me. So much better than LCD for gaming.

If I had room for a 60" it would be a no-brainer, I'd just go with the Panasonic ZT60. Even 55" is already pushing it. The input lag on the Samsung is scaring me off, and I don't want a base model plasma like the S60 because the picture quality will be worse than a high end LED, like the Sony W900A. So i don't have a lot of options.

At this point I think it's down to the 55" Sony W900A (LED) or the 55" Panasonic VT60 (Plasma).

The Panny has more input lag (even though it's still only about 40ms) but marginally better picture quality.

I know ;)

I am guessing you haven't seen them in person. Even the S60 looks better than the W900A. The VT60 looks much better.

If you care about image quality, get a Panny plasma. I've got an S64 and input lag is nonexistent. It won't be a problem. I believe the VT60 has even lower input lag than my S64. I'll be upgrading to the VT60/ZT60 once I find a good deal on the 65".

uhhh, no, not even close.

Uh yes. I've compared my friend's W900 to my S64 and the S64 had much better motion and nicer blacks. Tell me, have you compared them both in person? Both TV's were calibrated BTW. Even he agreed that the S64 looked better and he was somewhat regretting his decision to not go plasma.

I wouldn't even want to compare a VT60/ZT60 to a W900. It'd be incredibly unfair to the W900.

30 hours of break in left to go.

This is what it feels like whenever I want to use the TV.

m0Qk8.gif

Just use it regularly. It's a good idea to do a combination of 'break-in' and regular usage. It won't hurt anything. I've done the same thing with all three of my plasmas and they look amazing + no residual issues.

I've been using my GT50 for more than a year now and it's great! The image quality is just awesome for any type of content I throw at it and image retention has been almost non existent lately. Any IR that still shows of after certain extended play sessions, still go away fairly quickly as soon as I play something else on it. It's perfectly fine after the break in period.

Also, I never really noticed input lag. Didn't even really realize it was a thing, even though I also play certain games on my monitor (with really low input lag). I recently played through MGR without much of a hassle. Parrying went perfectly fine. I had more trouble with the demo months earlies, which might be down to either experience or maybe changed settings (I only recently switched on game mode).

Thinking about it some more though, I do clearly remember Hotline Miami controlling much better when playing on my monitor. The game requires split second reflexes and this worked noticeably better through my monitor it seemed. So yeah, maybe input lag IS a thing for certain games (and settings of course).

You can go to best buy and check, but that LED is just edge lit, which usually causes clouding and bleeding around the edge and in the corners.

So maybe I'll just stick with my TV until we move to a bigger place where I can fit a 60". Those S60s sure are tempting at that price, though . . .

Went to Best Buy yesterday. Their Magnolia had this $40,000 Samsung 4K TV. Oh my god. At the price and the picture ;_;

Also had the 55'' Samsung OLED TV that was $8,000. Now that was a stunner. When that tech comes down in price it's going to be a real deal. PQ was amazing and the blacks were extremely solid. I was impressed.

For anyone that doesn't have a lot green, Wal Mart has a 50' LG tv for $448. We just picked one up to replace our old Westinghouse, and so far so good. Really not noticing any input lag so that's a major plus. It's nothing fancy, but for anyone that doesn't have a ton to drop on a tv might wanna check this one out. It's model LN5100.

Just had my my VT65 professionally ISF calibrated. Got a killer deal as I got a big discount in exchange for a takeaway at our restaurant lol. Really quite an intriguing and educational few hours. He did 3 different modes, one for Night viewing, one for Day viewing (compensates for extra light, glare etc) and one for 3D mode (done with the glasses on the calibrator so it compensates for loss of colour and darker tint).

All in all really good stuff. Not a huge difference from the THX modes, but still a somewhat noticeable one. Mainly the slight yellow and green push is now gone, and gamma has been tweaked. I get slightly better black levels (confirmed through readings) and a touch more punch and dynamic range.

Funny thing is, the THX mode was more accurate than the ISF calibration settings I got online that I was using for burn in, from the exact same reviewer who calibrated my own screen today! In other words, sometimes using someone else's calibrated settings can have a negative impact on colour accuracy. Lol.

All right all, im in the market for a new tv. Right now i have the samsung HPT4254, which is a 42 inch plasma.

Im looking for a 50-60 inch tv that will be good for gaming, sports, and movies. Dont really have a preference on lcd or plasma, and dont want to spend more than 1k on it.

Dont really care one way or the other about 3d either.

Any suggestions?

I think I finally found the TV I've been looking for. It's a Toshiba 32' 120HZ 720p LED HDTV. I think this is the first reasonably priced TV I've seen, most 32'in are ridiculously priced. $400 for a 32'in lol, I might as well buy a 40'in 720p if I'm paying that much.

Hopefully it's still $250 price in December, because that's when I'll have enough $$$ to purchase it.

So is this a good TV? Is Toshiba even a good brand?

This is good info, thanks. I plan on having mine professionally calibrated once I am moved into a house early next year. I am mainly looking for optimal settings for low-light viewing, 2D and 3D (VT60).

Im trying to figure out the input lag on the Samsung UN55FH6003FXZA, but not having any luck. Anybody have a source they can find for it? A friend just bought it and asked me how to find the input lag

Lay off the drugs.

Usually a 240hz tv is native 120hz with motionflow turned off. Is the Bravia actually 120hz or a 60hz tv with motionflow turned on?

I am pretty sure its really 60Hz being its from 2006.

I like the Samsung but worried about lag since mostly this will be used for gaming. Would like the Sony W900 but it's 2k and only 55 inches.

I'm on the verge of purchasing the Sony KDL 42W670A just a few things I'm unsure about;
Is it the same TV as the Sony KDL 42W653A, can anyone confirm this? (main reason I'm purchasing it)
And will the fact it is a 50hz tv be bad for gaming?
Thanks

I've seen both of them in person, and I think you're smoking crack if you say the S60 looks better than the W900A.

FWIW, I went with the W900A. Purchase is made, and it should be here next week. It was pretty much a tie, with the lower input lag of the Sony and the marginally better image quality of the VT60. The tipping point for me was that the weight of the Sony was half the weight of the Panasonic (44 pounds vs. 85 pounds), and that the Sony had an extra HDMI input. Plus the Sony came with a year free of Hulu+, I've always wanted to check that out.

The Panny S60 Plasmas has been selling out fast on amazon, and that's even after their price have gone up since Panasonic announced they won't be making any more Plasmas. Damn them announcing that before Black Friday.

Amazon is sold out on all sizes, but the 3rd party sellers selling through amazon have stock. I've been watching the product page for several days now for the S60 50-inch. I've seen it go for almost $1000, selling out; then $900, selling out; then $800 and now it sits at $729.

I think I'm going to make the purchase. I'm not going to wait until friday or monday and risk having them run out of that model. And besides, doesn't Amazon price match the product? If I buy it for 729 and on friday it's 600 dollars, don't they price match it?

i haven't seen the 60" for under $1150 online. i wish i got in on the deal on Amazon when they were under a grand.

Good luck

Interesting. Let the price match war begin. I'm overseas, so I can only order from Amazon. So I'll be asking for a price match!

Sears has it for $600

I just picked mine up tonight and i'm loving it.

If you buy from B&H or Adorama then no tax AND free shipping. I just bought the w900a today from there

We have no sears but I wonder if I can get a price match from best buy.... any veteran advice?

I've read on some websties that big retailers are doing price matches too. Just google bestbuy + price match to see their policy.

Or just order from Amazon and ask for a price match before the sears page changes the price.

I'm building a new house and my wife became obsessed with the Samsung Series 7 line of LED TVs so we picked the 60" up for the family room. The model number is UN70F7100AFX.

It will mostly be used for movies and TV, but in case I want to use it for gaming at some point, will it be good enough? I know it's no ST60 for gaming, but I'm just curious if it's even acceptable.

Best Buy will usually price match no problem if they see the price in cart when they try do it at the store. I would go soon before Sears changes it, it's been live a few days.

I took the plunge and bought a Panny P60S60 from Best Buy. Should be here on Sunday. I really didn't want to spend the money now, but I've held off on getting a Panny plasma for several years now. I figured I needed to jump in before they disappeared like the Kuros did.

KDL42W670A

In regards to this TV does it have Full RGB range when you're looking at Xbox One / PS4 settings?

Should be the same - might be a different coloured bezel, or have a satellite tuner rather than freeview - something like that.

It is good for gaming because it has low input lag. It doesn't have fancy motionflow which can improve motion resolution but will dramatically increase input lag (so you wouldn't be using it for games anyway).

The Sony W6 series support full RGB and 4:4:4 chroma in game mode :)

I'm bouncing around these models

  • Sony KDL-55W802A
  • Samsung UN55F7100
  • VIZIO M551d-A2R
  • Sony KDL-55W900A

Obviously the Sony KDL-55W900A is the best choice out of those four but I am rethinking about my 2k budget I gave myself. Blah, so many choices lol. The Vizio TV looks tempting but I hear that the remote is unresponsive at times. Boo on the Sony TVs not having a back-lit remote. The Samsung TV have that "white cloud" effect when the screen is black.

Does anyone know how the input lag is for the Sammy and Vizio?

For anyone who cares about playing the old-school shit, I tried out Gradius V on my PS2. This game runs only in 480i, which means I was giving the VT60 a real input lag torture test, it has to deinterlace and upscale 480i and do it within a decent frame time because this game is from Treasure. It was completely playable this way, controlling Vic Viper was quite responsive from my informal testing of the first 2 levels.

It's too bad I didn't have this TV when I still had my Wii, but oh well.

Ok, settled for a Vizio 60" LED. On sale for BF for 678.99. Pretty good deal. If it sucks, I can return it. Read a lot of good reviews so it can't be that bad.

I tried several PS2 games when I got my UT50 last year, both running on 60GB Ps3 (at various output resolutions from 480p to 1080p) and on original Ps2 connected via RGB Scart, with the tv doing in this case deinterlancing and scaling.

Ps3 doesn't output 480i via hdmi in any case; it internally deinterlaces and then eventually outputs 480p or whatever resolution you have your dashboard set at if you check the option.

Interestingly, I found input lag to be substantially the same either way, and quite noticeable to me and annoying. I ended keeping the Ps2 connected to my crt.
Please also note that European UT50 is estimated at 16ms so it adds very little lag by itself.
