Common question:
I'm looking for a new TV now. It's been 8 years that's I've owned my Panasonic ViIERA plasma, but I want to upgrade size wise (it's a 42"). I'm thinking 50" to 60". Base price is around $1000, but I'm willing to top off at $1200 if the TV I'm buying is at least future proof for the next 5 years or so (EX: I won't want to upgrade because a whoziwutzit just got introduced to televisions because the TV I have does everything I want and more).
3D I can take or leave, I doubt I'd use it. 4K would be dope, but there isn't any content and upscaling seems cheap unless there is a set that does it well.
I'll be using this primarily for Gaming (so Input lag would need to have a nice balance) and I like tinkering with my PQ (gotta have those inky blacks and detail for the next season of Hannibal). Audio would have to be decent, my VIERA pushes out good sound and I'd hate to regress.

That Samsung is awful with flashlighting on the corners. It's a terrible tv in that alone, not to mention it's 60hz native if it's a variation of the 6830. You're better off finding a deal on a Samsung 7150 or Sony w700b.

Whew that Sony 700b looks legitimately awesome. And for $800 bucks I might have to jump on it this weekend.
Sooo, guys. I got a Sony KDL55W800B and I'm noticing this color uniformity "banding" issue oftentimes in games (especially while panning/looking around). From looking around online, it seems like all TVs now suffer from this crap. So should I just try to get used to it? Do I have any options here?

I don't notice any banding on my w700b the little bro of the w800b. Have you played with your smooth gradation setting to see if it gets rid of the banding? I don't have that setting turned on on my set as I don't notice any banding and I ran some banding test on my set.
From what I've seen most Sonys below the flagship model has this. Although my 700B never did. I think earlier in thread someone was reporting about that in drive club and smooth gradation setting fixed most of it.
It was the floor model, talked my manager down a bit. Luckily I know how hard it was used, mostly a looked over model because not a lot of people wanted a $1,300- $2,000 1080p TV.
Right now I notice vs my 700B
+Better picture vs my calibrated 700B
+Better blacks
+Much less flashlighting (which is odd because RTINGS reported terrible black uniformity and bad contrast ratio)
+17ms of lag
+no external power brick
+i prefer glossy screen vs semi gloss
-Worse motion? (Don't really know, will know when I see them side by side.)
I'm looking forward to getting this calibrated then having my PC mirror a movie on both screens and seeing just how the 700B and 950B compare.

They're aiming for a 60-70 inch TV, and they don't really have a price limit.
They'll be using it primarily for watching movies.
4K and 3D are not pre-requisites, but if they happen to be included, they wouldn't mind.
I mentioned to them about the new LG 4K OLED TVs that are coming out in late spring/summer, but I'm not sure that they'll be patient enough to wait that long since they've been dying to replace their TV for awhile now.
Any suggestions?

im jelly, is the 950B 4k compatible or no. You can sell the 700B for 600+ and gain a bit of a profit from that swap. RTINGS must have had a bad set. Glossy screens look good, I don't mind gloss or semi gloss. 17ms lag and no external brick is pretty sweet. RTINGS also does state that uniformity varies from set to set.
It was off. I turned it to High and it helped a little... maybe.
So... what's the flagship model? How expensive of an upgrade would it be?

It would be the 950B. It's a bit over a thousand dollars right now. It's an IPS panel so a bit of a different picture than what you have.
Look a few pages back from what I remember someone was having problems with banding on the 800B and something fixed it. I think, or maybe it was a samsung. They posted a picture of it in Drive CLub.
32" is too small to notice much of the good features in bigger TVs. So 32" tend to be flat out 60hz or 120hz panels 1080p or 720p. If you want the best get a 4k 32" computer monitor. If you just want a decent TV get a 120hz Vizio 1080p.

I have both the 700B and 950B right now. Both don't have banding. If you're in NC I'm selling the 700B. What were you watching which had banding btw?

Why not get the 700B? It's a damn good TV.
Just my opinion but there's a reason plasmas have gone the way of the dodo. There was a time when a $700 plasma would get you an amazing picture for the price but LED has caught up. I've owned two plasma's prior to this LED and I'm glad to have gotten an LED this time around.
Alright so I went to Best Buy today and looked at both the Sony 700b and the 800b. They didn't have proper demo material playing on the 700b so I didnt get a really good look at it, but the guy running the area near the 800b retrieved the remote for me and I got to fiddle with the settings. Even in the demo area it looked great!
I'm wondering though if that extra "5" is going to be worth the extra $100 right now or do I order the 50" for $100 less (700b = $800 for today only, 800b is at $900 regularly).

I don't know but if you want one without all the bs "smart" features but a good picture, the Samsung UN32EH5000 I recently got has that going for it.

Huge upgrade over my old tv. One thing I've noticed is a weird ghost like effect when the screen is dark. In games. Like during Destiny's Vault of Glass Raid. Like the frame rate is being "smoothed" or something

Turn off the smoothing in the TV settings or set it in gaming mode.
Sometimes a lower smoothing setting might be a great middleground.

I've been eying the LG 32LB5600, but waiting on their newer sets before making a decision. It has an IPS panel, LED with local dimming, and it's input latency is ~20ms.

As far as I know the 700b is the same TV as the 800b except for the included 3d functionality in the 800b (and silver vs black bezel). Also, I wouldn't pay $900 for the 800b. It's been as low as $499 at Frys recently. Since it's a 2014 display most shops will be clearing them out soon. I wouldn't be surprised if it hits a much lower price than $900 by mid-March.
Maybe I should wait then? I just kinda put that together about the difference with the 700b/800b (3-D). I don't care about 3d so I'll get a 700b. But are you saying I should wait for the price to drop even more later on? Does the 700b have the potential to drop to that low or is the 800 dropping because 3d is a dying feature?
That Fry's deal was in store only and hardly any stores had them, sold out real fast.
700B is interesting because it's a Best Buy exclusive, so there is no external pressure on other outlets prices. I wonder how soon they will start selling the floor models though, there's good deals there and that's how I got my floor model 950B for $450.

I think I may buy the 700b tonight then. Not sure which size to go for at the moment. My room could support either, but because it's being used in my room there is about a 5 inch gap between my door and the edge of a 55" television potentially being there. A fifty would be fine but maybe paying that extra hundred could be worth it in the long run? ( or who am I kidding I'll probably want to go even bigger down the road because that's the MO for people who are into televisions like this lol).

Well I paid $1200 with Tax for my Vizio P-Series 55" 4K. I really like it so far, it even has a cool ass remote with a keyboard on the back!
That's like one of the 10 things Netflix has in 4K lol.
And the Remote.
The P-Series has some of the best input lag you can get right now. I think it's around 14ms.
Thanks for the response DF, but I went ahead and ordered the Sony w700b 55' TV. Gunna pick it up tomorrow and enjoy the extra day off fiddling with it and all that.

PvZ GW has been causing some image retention on my GT50. To be fair I don't use game mode, THX cinema, and I've been playing it a lot. Damn HD elements!

Where are u getting your info ? The w700 and w800b use the same panel as the vaunted Sony 55w900a from last yeAr, minus the triluminous . I own both the w700b and w900a and the w700b is a remarkable TV for the price . You won't find a better gaming TV this year for the money. Very deep blacks, input lag undetectable
