Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

I really hope these drop further in price by the end of the year. Have any other brands announced OLED TVs in development? I'm far more interested in this tech than 4K.

Just rumors from Panasonic and Samsung, but whenever asked, they deny it. If they really wanted to put out anything at all I think they'd shown it at CES. I don't know what the other shows are to introduce new models, but I'm pretty much thinking it will just be LG.

Thats annoying, I guess the price will probably stagnate for awhile then. I wonder why no one is focusing on OLED technology. I think it looks dramatically better than an average LED TV, and 4K media will take a while to actually become viable.

Only other likely candidate would be CEDIA in September.

Called the Sony service number and they are going to have a technician call me within 24-48 hours and then come out to my house to see what parts need to be ordered, then order them and come back some other time to repair my TV. Fucking long ass process, didn't know things still worked this way. I'm so use to companies just mailing out a new product and having you return your busted one in the same box.

Amusingly I just finally received a followup call telling me that they are out of the part that would need to be replaced so they are sending me a "refurbished" replacement, along with a box that I will have to send the old unit back in. Not to happy about receiving a refurbished tv but whatever. Hope it works out since I only have 4 months left on my warranty and it isn't extended at all. If it goes out I hope it does so soon, like the other person recently in this thread, so I can still get it replaced/my money back.

Also don't know why I keep reporting it back to this thread, just figured that it may help others that have the problem/document what Sony does.

IFA in September. Last year Panasonic showed off their 4K OLED prototype. Sony launched their curved sets there as well for the European market.

In some not surprising news, Sony has killed off their HMZ displays to focus on Morpheus. I was hoping they would release a 1080p model since Morpheus won't be out until next year. I like my T1 except for the comfort issues. Might grab a T3 if there are any close out deals.

Every time I see an OLED in stores they have horrid burn in, this really makes me want to stay away from them as a gamer despite the great contrast/color

I've never seen anyone report burn in on their OLED TV caused by regular usage (not saying it can't happen though, purely anecdotal). Stores, meanwhile, basically torture test the things by putting them on Vivid and leaving menus and the like on screen all day. If you practically go out of your way to cause burn in then yeah, they can get it, but the same can be said of plasmas. People seem to suggest babying them for the first couple of hundred hours when you first get them just in case, but even amongst people who don't, it doesn't seem to be a real worry. I'm not concerned about it, and there've been a few posters in this thread with them who haven't had any issues whatsoever despite playing loads of games on them.

Speaking of which, my LG 930V (9300) finally arrived today and oh man I'm in love. Spent the past 7 years with a 32" 720p TV that was too small for my usual viewing distance to begin with, so going from that to a 55" OLED is pretty incredible. Did a bit of basic calibration (read: stealing settings from another forum) and I'm basically happy with it as-is. Realised I needed a new ones years ago but I'd pretty much decided my next one would be an OLED. Didn't realise they'd come down to vaguely affordable prices until a week ago when Xenoblade X's ridiculously small font started me looking again.

I bought it on Amazon. They have sizes up to 60 inches right now. I only bought the 55 inch set, so that's what I'm referencing in my comment.

I just ordered the same set, what settings are you using to game? I want my Witcher 3 to be beautiful.

I got an amazon warehouse deal for $875, no tax and free shipping, for a mint condition 55" where only the box was damaged. I saw another listed a few days ago,but didn't get it in time, so Ive been refreshing that items page constantly and another popped up.

Shopping for a new TV in the ~$400-$450 range or lower preferably. Leaning towards a 40-46" LED or Plasma. Would be used for gaming and TV. I am totally lost out there, what are the best ones for that range with low lag?

I think the KDL-40W605B (Bravia W6 series) is usually recommended for that. Great picture and low input lag.

Edit: by the way, LED TV's have LCD panels generally speaking (so they are LCD TV's)(when it comes to TV's advertised as LED TV). What the TV manufacturers mean is that they are TV's with LED backlight.

That's interesting, it might mean that Sony's electronics group has some kind of input with the development and design of the Morpheus HMD.

Anyway, a bit logical that they're scaling down product development of the HMZ HMD line. VR HMD's and AR HMD's are the next logical step, so it makes sense that they're pursuing that.

Also, hopefully this means Morpheus will also be able to function as a stand-alone HMD that lets you watch movies, TV, video etc without being tied to just PS4 games. Ideally they would also make it compatible for VR game development on PC.

I had a plasma and burned game HUDs into it. After that I've become a lot more skeptical about people who claim there's no such thing as burn-in.

I own a GearVR and seeing what they did with Oculus Cinema I think we can expect something similar except PS4 has better video content support like Blu-ray, Netflix, Vudu, etc. I doubt the picture quality will be as good as a 720p or 1080p HMZ (had they released one) since the Morpheus screen would be simulated in VR to a watchable FOV compared to native resolution on a HMZ. I look forward to what they come up with in Morpheus though.

Cool. Nice deal.

My previous TV had had its white balance calibrated with a colorimeter, but I haven't been able to put this one through the same paces, so I'm pretty much just using the default "Calibrated Dark" settings. That said, I do turn off pretty much every optional post-processing option with the exception of "Game Mode" and "Clear Action" (which is the strobing backlight). It's also worth noting that some people prefer the default 2.2 gamma, but 2.4 might be preferable in really dark environments. Do see if you prefer the local dimming on or off.

You would get better results with BT. 1886 over a gamma of 2.4 for a dark room.

I know that feeling :)

Went ahead and decided to go for it and got the new XBR-55X850C like I was thinking about, which arrived two days ago. :)

Incredible TV.

Freaking gorgeous picture so far on the stuff I've tried which are some PS4 games (FFXV demo, Order 1886, Guilty Gear Xrd) and my blu-ray samplings of Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers, a couple of Legend of Korra S1 eps, and an ep of Gundam Unicorn (so the new X1 processor seems to be doing a great job on 1080p stuff) and some full 4K test files downloaded from the web (like the Ink Drop and Wildlife 4K videos). Colors look fantastic as seems to be expected of these Triluminous displays, plus the bezel is really small which is a great touch.

I'm not too good at this stuff so I can't say much in detail but no noticeable flash-lighting or lighting uniformity issues on my set and blacks seem quite good, though I haven't done a ton of night viewing yet in two days and I'm coming from an ancient old XBR.

Still looking forward to some real reviews that can compare beyond the eye test.

The Android TV stuff seems to be working very well with the day-1 update, it's responsive and watching Youtube, Amazon, and Crackle works fine.

Only negative so far: Waiting for the 4K streaming apps to be ready. The current version of the Amazon app does not yet seem to be upgraded for their 4K streaming even after the day-1 update so I can't do that yet. And, while I don't have Netflix at the moment anyway, the Netflix app isn't available yet. Fortunately I thought I read somewhere that there was news that that another update was planned for this month.

I'm loving this thing so far.

Excellent news, the X850C is the set I'm increasingly drawn to in my price range.

One thing I'm uncertain on is whether that thing accepts a 4K signal at 60Hz via HDMI though. The marketing specs mention 4K/60p, but the website only lists up to 4K/30 via HDMI. Just want to future-proof if I get a decent PC upgrade in the next couple of years.

I don't suppose that's something you could test? Also how do the black levels and viewing angles look?

Glad it's good though, no matter. Enjoy the new TV buzz :)

Saw the 850C yesterday. Haven't spent nearly enough time with it, but first impressions are that it's expensive and the X850 is super cheap right now. I do like that they have done away with the camera. The Sony guy seems to think the new chip makes 4K upscaling so so much better then last years model. I'll know more next week when I see it side by side with the X850. I don't think it's going to do 4k/60HZ, but I am just guessing. We won't know until the true spec comes out.

The 2015 Sony 4K C series will once again only accept 4K/60 as YCbCr 4:2:0.

As far as PC gaming goes, if you own an Nvidia video card this is fine. Nvidia added this mode last year, it works on all Kepler and Maxwell cards so GTX 600/700/800/900 series will all output 4K/60 to these TVs. If you own an AMD video card you are SOL, they have not implemented support for 4K/60 4:2:0 in their drivers and knowing AMD they probably never will.

Moral of the story here is buy Nvidia.

I guess if you use your TV strictly for gaming this is fine - 4:2:0 makes any display pretty much unusable for general desktop use though. The Samsung sets all now support it and have low input lag, I'd be hard pressed to choose a Sony over those

OK awesome, thanks for the info both, I usually buy Nvidia so that'd be fine.

Practically speaking, can you notice much difference between 4:2:0 and 4:4:4 chroma?

If you have a PC connected to the TV and that's your main use. Yes. It was a big difference going from a Plasma that only did 4:2:0 to a Sony that does 4:4:4.

Isn't 4K Blueray players going to up the chroma sub sampling? You would be completely missing out on that with a TV stuck on 4:2:0.

I think the Sony 930C gets shipped out this week. I don't have money for any of these TV's but I'm saving up to get a nice one, so it's very interesting to me to see how they will be received by the consumers. By the time I can get a 2015 model they should have went through some price drops too.

Thanks, I will. :)

Bit of a pain lugging my good PC's tower to the TV but good news since I wasn't sure either, pleasant surprise 4K/60 was there and worked under PC choices in the Nvidia Control Panel.

So this might be why it worked, cool!

And I can also confirm that I could indeed choose 4K/60 since I just lugged my main PC with dual GTX680s over to the TV. :) I wouldn't know how to check 4:2:0 or 4:4:4, but it's still awesome that it can accept 4K/60 via HDMI. I wasn't entirely sure either and was worried about that.

Will the Sony x930c (55") be ok for gaming? The 9005 had a lag of 42.5 milliseconds, the new set should be better, right?

I thought that only comes in 65" +? I'm interested to see the input lag of these. Hopefully they improved from last years, given other manufacturers have. Yet nothing has still touched the W950B.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's 65" only. And the 75" will be the 940C.

As they are not out yet, it's difficult to speculate on input lag etc, but as it gets released this week, it should not be long for reviews to pop up. That should go for most of the 2015 Sony TV's. I heard good things about their picture quality so I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks, I will. :)

Awesome! Thanks for doing that, good to have it confirmed on the real thing.

Cheers for the 4:4:4 info also folks.

I'm keeping my Samsung LCD until I can get a nice 40-50" 4K OLED with low input lag at an affordable price, lol. I have a feeling I'll be waiting a long time.

EDIT: Why does LG seem to be the only manufacturer of OLED sets right now?

If you can still get one, grab the now $1499 XBR55X850B. I own it and know several others who do in different sizes and it is no question the best tv for the check price Sony cut you. Destroys the vizio in image quality, color and upscaling. Features too with 3d, built in camera and PlayStation now. 55" instead of 60" but go for quality not quantity.

Edit: plus triluminous color which the W850 didn't have.

Just to loop back around, Sony came and got my KDL60W850b and hauled it away. I did a night of intense online homework, went out the next day with the $1500 burning a hole in my pocket and got the XBR55X850B 4K set you recommended from a local shop for $1499.

Really really glad I did. losing a little screen size is a very fair trade for this color. set just pops. It has that IPS "greyness" to the blacks that i am getting used to. not a dealbreaker once i ran the Disney WOW calibration disc (backlight way down to 3, picture to max brings the blacks back to a decent place aside from the "sheen" that is just the IPS panel) but this is a nice step up from the KDL line.

The Triluminous is no joke. Sunset Overdrive was like candy.

Man...Daredevil in 4k on this TV good lord it looks good.

The Blu-ray 4K spec still hasn't been unveiled yet.

However movies are still 4K/24 (or 48 if HFR makes it in) and HDMI 1.4 has plenty of bandwidth for 4K/24 @ 4:4:4 if BD4K movies get distributed that way.

The big things you would want for full compliance with BD4K would be HDR, which some 2015 TVs support, and Rec.2020 color space, which no TV currently supports and as it requires implementation of Quantum Dots on LCDs or improvements in current 8-bit OLED TVs, it's unlikely we'll be seeing anything resembling full Rec.2020 anytime soon from TVs.

You're right, I got the model wrong. I'm talking about the KD55X9305CBU, really hope they have improved on the input lag.

Isn't HDR mostly going to target P3 color space?

Yup, the Triluminous seems to be awesome, the colors on mine (X850C) are fantastic and that X850B looked great too.

That was the other set that I was thinking of getting until the new models came out at the same time and I decided to take the plunge on the listed upgrades.

Isn't HDR mostly going to target P3 color space?

The spec hasn't been unveiled, nobody knows if it's going to be P3 or Rec.2020 as the widest supported color space. But since all existing movies are being made to P3 since DCI is the de-facto standard for digital cinema, it makes an awful lot of sense to support that color space. Anyways they might have optional support for Rec.2020 in BD4K and everyone might just ignore it and use P3.

UHD BD specs are finalized. Digital bridge sounds like Ultraviolet with CFF.

So, in addition to a maximum resolution of 3840x2160 pixels, Ultra HD Blu-ray will also support expanded color range in the form of P3 (Digital Cinema) and BT2020 color gamuts, HDR (High Dynamic Range) and even high frame rate content. Immersive sound formats such as Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and AURO-3D will all be supported as they deliver their height-enhanced soundtracks using existing audio codecs (Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio and PCM, respectively), which are all part of the Ultra HD Blu-ray spec.

What can anyone tell me about the XBR 55X800B? I just received the refurbished replacement for my 50w800b and it was that instead. I'm not really happy with it since I picked out my old set specifically, but want to get more info before I call Sony and get mad about it.

It's just standard Sony 4K TV. Sort of like the W700B but extra resolution.

I can't find any details on it for input lag. Just from messing around with it I think it's an ips, which is something I purposely avoided when picking my tv. I don't even care about 4k either, as I have no content for it and planed on getting a better 4k years from now.

Like it seems to be a better standard TV then my old set, bigger and normally more expensive, but I picked my old tv specifically for what I wanted to use it for. Shit is just so disappointing but not sure if I want to deal with Sony any more.

Yea, I think the W800B is a pretty good TV (the one you had). I'm not too fond of those entry level 4Ks because high resolution TVs don't really interest me. They did ship you a more expensive TV, I'm guessing maybe they are out of W800B's? Most people would probably be happy with that, but I probably wouldn't be.

As for IPS, I'm not sure if it would be an IPS. I think LG has the marketshare of IPS 4K and those are usually 240hz and the X800B is definitely 120hz. Don't quote me on that though because I don't research much about 4K televisions. Sounds like I'm the only one who is really happy with my IPS Sony TV though.
