Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

I'm looking to get a new TV around late November. My poor old 37" Bravia 768p is on the way out.

My budget is £700, The two I am looking at are KDL50W755C and KDL50W80.

Primary usage would be games and blurays via PS3/4.

How do they compare with input lag and picture quality?

Anyone familiar with the above?

Guys, this is no doubt a newbie question, but how do i see what the latest firmware is that is installed on my TV? And how do i check if there's new firmware? I got a notification about it yesterday, i chose to install it but nothing happened. I find the menu's very slow, so i hope an update fixes is somewhat.

EC9300 by the way.

I'm debating hard here on the next TV. I have a Vizio M (4K) at 55" and love it, but I'm looking to upgrade to the 65". For just a bit more I can get the LG 55" EC9300. Not sure which to pull the trigger on. Gaming on it mostly and watching movies.

This will be my Halo 5 TV lol. Someone push me in a direction lol

The OLED by far.

Unless you sit far away from your TV set, to the point where a 55" looks small. Then perhaps going bigger and sacrificing quality is the better option.

I updated to the latest firmware but the menu is still rather sluggish, nowhere near as fast as the Sony or Panasonic i had before this. But that would be about the only annoyance i have, along with the greenish tint on white backgrounds. Cause for the most part i am insanely happy with this TV. I just wish i wasn't such a picky person and could finally just settle on a certain calibration. I keep changing stuff, lol.

You're running the EC9300? Are you going to take it back or just deal with the issue? Once you notice stuff like that it's difficult not to focus in on it. The DSE on my Vizio drive me up the wall and it's an otherwise beautiful picture.

Well...the problem with returning it and have them give me another set, is that i risk getting a site with worse problems. Worse problems for me would be severe vertical banding. That shit truly takes me out of gaming or a movie/show. I've seen on AVS that there have been a few people with some seriously faulty sets, one had very bad banding or any other kind of issues that i am not noticing yet.

I have not watched a movie on the TV yet, but this weekend i will. But if i am not going to be noticing any seriously bad banding or other issues, i'll keep it. I can definitely live with some greenish tint on snow in my games, and hey who knows...it might even fade away after a while. The risk of getting an even worse set (and then me basically regretting that decision) is not worth it.

Educate me here: Is OLED pixel response as fast as Plasma?

Well, the EC9300 has a response time of .3ms which is nearly perfect iirc. The only issue is that it's input lag is 38-42ms depending on measurement. So if you're a competitive no-scope 360 MLG player, then it's "terrible". If you're not competitive, then it's pretty acceptable I honestly think. The overall picture quality of an OLED will be superior to an LED, especially a Vizio. Only the true FALD models like the samsung JS9500 and sony X940C can be at least in the same ballpark in picture quality.

It sounds like with all the updates and a few settings turned off that some people are getting in the high 20ms for input lag. I'm not professional but I play a lot of FPS, and I'll compare it to my Vizio when I get it tomorrow. The Vizio is 18ms.

Does anyone in the UK have a suggestion for a good TV stand that can support a 48kg 65", without the TV protruding from the edges of the stand? I'm trying to get the family to sign off on an awesome Sony TV but it looking pretty in the room seems to be all important.

Also, they want it to look like it's actually made from real wood rather than something from IKEA.

Help me...

If the tint is across the whole screen that can be fixed with the 20 point color adjustment.

I calibrated my TV exactly as the settings you posted, except for colour, i got that at 60. Dynamic contrast at low, because i like the look of my games more with that enabled. I have Super resolution at medium (this was enabled on Eco too and i like the extra detail) and colour gamut on Wide. Without these settings i found the image quality less crisp and the input lag is still really decent with this.

You were right about the 20 points, the colours are perfect now and white truly is white now. It also seems it has lessened but not (yet) removed the greenish tint. One question about White balance. Do i need to put it back to 2 points or is it all good now? Hard to explain, but i have no changed every setting accordng to that AVS link and when i now go to settings>picture>picture adjust>expert control>white balance i see warm 2, 20 points, outer, IRE 100 etc. Do i need to change this all back so that it says 2 points and IRE 5 or just leave it like this?

Oh and is there a way to copy all these white balance settings to the other picture modes or only inputs?

´Thinking about finally upgrading from my old ass Philips.

- Is DSE still a thing? That shit that makes the screen looks like it's dirty when the camera pans. Shit is annoying as hell in FPS games. I swore to myself I won't buy a TV until this is fixed .

- Is Philips any good anymore? I really want a TV with AL but since they aren't really made by Philips anymore I don't have much faith in their newer models.

- Is that quantum dot shit just marketing?

TIA

DSE is alive and well. My 55' Vizio M-55 is gorgeous other than the intense DSE.

There's still some good TV's out there. I'm making a jump to the EC9300. OLED is the future and the 9300 is getting great reviews and feedback.

I'm still reluctant to jump on the OLED bandwagon. As someone who experienced a lot of image retention problems with my Plasma I really don't like what I've read about OLEDs so far.

But I've never seen one in RL so I really shouldn't judge beforehand.

Yea that's a concern of mine as well, but I from what I've read from people on here and a few other places is that they've worked most of that out. I will play Halo 5 into the ground and will keep a close eye on it within the return window.

Strange. When I play a bluray on my ps4 the black bars above/under aren't fully black, so does loading screens ans such.
My ps4 rgb setting is on full, and on "low" on the tv (ec9300v). For games and netflix everything is perfect, with 100% black when needed, but not on blurays.
Any idea ?

I've been gaming on the Game setting today and i was checking the aspect ratio and i can choose a lot of different ones: 16:9, Just scan, Original and many more, but those don't matter for gaming. which of these three is the 'correct' one?

Shouldn't it be high on the TV? Doesn't this crush blacks the way you have it now? I've done this with Xbox One too, put it at PC RGB and the TV at low, while i love how absolutely dark it makes the nights in games like GTA V, it's not correct and i am losing detail. When i use the calibration option, i can't see a thing.

Your PS4 is supposed to be set to RGB Limited as well.

Blu-Ray is still 16-235 colour, right?

"Just Scan" is 1:1 pixel mapping. That's the one you want.

Ok so PS4 is sending only "limited" when on bluray so since I had everything calibrated in "full" it messed up the black levels.
It was apparent clearly when the loading screen of the BR ( the one from the system ) appeared. First one was from full rgb, so inky blacks, and the second one from limited, so much more grey with the same settings. Now onto testing with games :)

Ok, so for a living room TV used for mainly movies and retro gaming using retroarch (crt-easymode shader) and nintendo wii u, I am considering an LG OLED 1080p set to last for the next 5-10 years.

I'm thinking 55" for the space but 65" isn't "too big" in my opinion, just trying to keep cost down. 55EC9300. Its curved but I cant find a flat version.

0 fucks given for 3D.

I have a 50" 720p Panasonic Plasma with a pink burn in spot on white backgrounds. Mostly unnoticeable when regular viewing but on white screens and menus it will rear its ugly head sometimes, so I want to replace it.

Am I a fool for considering 40ms+? Is LED seriously even an option at this point for someone used to a plasma?

Thanks man,in that case i'm good.

Absolutely loving this TV. Each time i see that immense clear picture when i fire up my Xbox One and i see the main dashboard menu...i am reminded again that i've never seen it this damn clear, lovely.

What is the best way to check for IR, if i got any? With plasma years ago i was always extra careful with the settings for the first 100 hours or so, but i have to admit i have not been too careful with this TV. Meaning i did change plenty of settings and things like OLED light and contrast are quite high too. There is nothing like screenwash (or something called like that) on this TV, right?

Same here with the PS Store screens. Very detailled, lots of colors, gigantic contrast, every time I pop it I'm in awe.
Watched a bit of the Pacific Rim BR tonight While calibrating ... This TV and movie are a match made in heaven !
Also, what are everyone's thoughts about the Edge enhancement feature ? i've tried it a bit and it seems to add details without too much degrading the picture. Feels more natural than upping the sharpness.

FrankNitty, does your 65" OLED have the yellow band issue?

If so, how visible is in it in actual content?

I'm having a dilemma. Amazon has the warehouse deals EC9300 for $1575, in very good condition "comes in original packaging, packaging may be damaged" and new for $1797..... do I take the risk and get the warehouse deal??

This isn't exactly what you're asking, but the M55 is incredible, listed at $849 at BB. Get yourself a 10% off mover's coupon and you're close to what you're looking to spend.
I have the 60" version and it was amazing. I say was because short of hitting the 2 year mark it developed two black lines going horizontal. Very sad now that I don't even want to play my PS4. Can't afford a new TV due to home projects on the books still, maybe next year. =

I would go for it. Easy to return with Amazon if there are any issues.

No yellow bands like what people have been posting on AVS. I did some test on the display and it really doesn't have them on mine. Looked at 60%, 65%, 80%, near white so 95-99% and Above white. No bands like those on AVS are posting in those for me. I even check Casino Royal and Inception. Nothing that I saw.

Not seeing anything in real content that is jarring.

I just hit 91 hours on my display. Waiting for a little over 100 for the first real calibration run through I'm going to do. I have just did the basic stuff as of right now. I'm probably going to do a BT 1886 gamma, with 10% at 2.1-2.2 so that should help with shadow detail and not crushing near blacks.

Also after I do my calibration and look at some reference material and then compare to my 500M and ZT60 I will post some screens, and also progression of how the vignetting changed during the aging of the panel. I have pics of the 5% with only like 2 hours on display, again at 30 hrs of 1-5%, pics at 85 hours, and will have some at 100+, pre and post calibration. I'll post them all in owners thread.

I think i have edge enhancement on as well, but i am not sure. I noticed that my settings really are not what people recommend here and on AVS. I am mostly talking about settings like sharpness and super resolution. When i powered on the TV for the first time it was in Eco mode and i was floored by the amazing picture quality. However i still decided to go check out the recommended settings and for the most part i liked it, except that the picture was not crisp enough, it was actually a bit hazy/blurry almost.

So i went to check what settings are enabled in ECO mode and i saw the super resolution thingy on medium, that one makes a big difference. At the end of the day all these settings are very subjective. I do agree about TruMotion though. While i absolutely love how smooth it can make games look, turn the camera around too fast (pretty much any shooter really) and you see the blur and other ugly stuff and gone is the smoothness. TruMotion is a no no for me.

Kind of bummed that 60" sets aren't being offered as much these days. I'm looking at trying one of the LG OLEDs or Samsung 7500 if my set dies and neither is offered in a 60" variety. They just jump from 55" to 65". I've got a real Goldilocks situation with my TV cabinet as the first is a little small and the second is slightly too big. I mentioned replacing the entertainment center furniture to my wife so we could get a 65" and she grumbled about how our living room isn't a theater.

Im having TV setup issues with my girlfriend too as i have a 55" but her 32" barely fits in her corner cabinet and we are having discussions about it lol

So GAF, I'm in the market to upgrade my living room TV. At this point I'm trying to decide between the Vizio M and E series, probably 60 inch for either. I can't decide which to go with based on what I've read. Is there any reason to do 4K if I'm only using it for my PS4/Xbox One? I'll also be about 10 feet from the TV so I don't know if I can even tell the difference between native 1080p and 1080p scaled to 4K. Another thing that might bug me is the reported subpar motion blur for the M series. I'm not sure if I would be able to notice the trailing from the motion blur. Can anyone give me recommendations/advice on which way to go? Any advice is appreciated.

I can tell you that the M is pretty stellar besides some dirty screen effect noticed in games. Movies are phenomenal on this bad boy and it does a great job of upscaling. Rtings.com is a good source for research. As was mentioned BB has the 55" M at $849 and you can use the 10% mover's coupon.
