Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

I'm irritated that my parent's several year old plasma looks better than my brand new vizio 4k. :/

The black levels of my plasma are probably no great shakes by today's standards. But in every other department - especially that cinematic, flim-ish look - it's still fab after 8 years. I'm not looking forward to the day it breaks.

I still have the 40" Samsung J6200, but at this point I'm going to return it as soon as I get a free afternoon. I'm still baffled by the motion blur issue there, but it definitely seems like a case of "hey we put a bad panel in the small model."

I'm not sure where to move to from here, though. The space doesn't allow for much larger, and the viewing distance is somewhere around 5 ft. 40" seems like the size to hit, at least for 1080p. My two choices to shift to now are either the J6300, which is seeming to be the safe bet as a 1080p TV that should function for various media.

I am considering the JU7100 though and just doing the 4K jump. My real question is simple I think. Is 4k wasted on a 40" TV? Even with a short viewing distance.

One of the reasons why I couldn't bring myself to buy a new TV anytime soon. My plasma still looks way too good.

I've got a kuro, and oled looks quite a bit better. Even my wife who is clueless on these things said wow.

I'm waiting on a sale, but will make the jump to oled next year.

That's nice to hear. I've got an 8 year old 50" Kuro that still looks great, but I'm thinking about stepping up to a 65" OLED next year.

There's nothing quite like visiting relatives for the holidays and seeing what "normal" people buy, and consider good picture quality. I don't care how little you paid for it via a doorbuster deal, it looks like garbage.

I miss my tv so much.

Yeah people hate me visiting as i calibrate their TV's to decent pictures (on their as you say doorbuster deals) next time i go back its bleed central 😕

A couple of the best TVs right now, for gaming, are the Sony W950B and W850B.

55 - 70 inches of screen, They can be adjusted down to 17ms input lag (note: I haven't seen input lag numbers for the 70). comparable to IPS monitors you might have on your computer desk, yet those are much smaller.

that's pretty nuts.

Sonys also have backlight strobing modes, which give really good motion handling. And on moderate settings, you don't take a huge hit in lag time. You can get a big benefit on motion, and still come in at less than 25ms. considering that most HDTVs are at least 30ms or higher, you are still doing very well.

Again, most HDTV's hit at least 30 - 45ms. with those closer to 30ms, being above average.

Some of the really high end stuff can be pretty poor. Such as Panasonic's last couple of rounds of high end plasma screens. They can be as bad as 70ms, depending on the size. but you get an ultra rich picture, due to all of that time intensive image processing.

OLED theoretically should be very low input lag. But so far it seems most brands are layering on tons of image processing, jacking up the input times. It seems OLED may not natively be as sweet as some had claimed, if they still need tons of image processing.

I'm irritated that my parent's several year old plasma looks better than my brand new vizio 4k. :/

Same story here. My parents have a 2007 Viera plasma and every time I come over I'm amazed at how deep and rich the image is. Resolution is low (1024x768) but the image is just so rich.

Since I don't have the money yet for a LG OLED I was thinking of maybe hunting for a 2010ish Panasonic plasma, but it's proven to be very difficult to find one.

I bought a new 4K Sony Bravia this year. It doesn't come close to matching my 2008 Kuro Plasma. Still unbelievable looking all these years later.

Yeah. I can't remember what model there's is, but I did a lot of research back then to help them get the best one they could afford. 50 inch panasonic. It's stunning.

I bought myself the Vizio m55c2 for myself after extensive research and trying to cram value into my budget. But I come back home to visit for christmas and I'm blown away by how this old plasma is Killing my new 4k tv. Also lower resolution stuff looks substantially better. I don't know how I feel about it. Other than, as soon as I get home I'm going to experiment with the settings on my tv.

I don't know the model number offhand, but my parents have a Samsung wide-screen CRT HDTV. It's about 10 years old and probably only 37 inches and 720p/1080i, but it's picture quality is phenomenal. It's also the only CRT wide-screen television I've ever seen.

And speaking from experience, it's heavy as fuck. Like 150lbs at least.

So my Samsung Plasma is probably on its last legs, I've noticed a lot of white noise and a yellow spot in an area when its displaying white color.

Plasmas are rare these days, right? Are OLEDS capable for gaming?

I just got the OLED LG EG9100 last week and the picture is amazing. Been playing all my PS4 games again because they all look so much better now. Everything is so sharp and vivid with zero blur. Can't believe how good MGS5 looks on this tv. Put the tv in game mode and renamed the input to PC, and I can't feel any input lag. Also, I wasn't a 3D person, but after watching some 3D Blu Rays and 3D videos on YouTube I'm a big fan. This tv performs great with 3D. Super clear picture and no crosstalk. I was going to get a Sony or Samsung 4K but the picture quality of this LG is just a class ahead in my opinion.

My Monitor broke and I'm in need of a new screen, was going to buy a new TV for gaming thinking of using this for both

VIZIO E43-C2 43-Inch 1080p Smart LED TV (2015 Model)

Anyone know how good this is as a monitor/gaming TV?

I'm not looking for 4k or even 120hz I'm happy with 1080p/60hz, Amazon lists this as 120hz but it's talking about the larger sized models.

any other recommendations are welcome.

Santa came through :o

Crossing fingers for a good panel.

BenQ RL2755HM if you could find one. or the 24" model but I think that's pretty small

i have the 24" one. really happy with it. although i wouldn't recommend it for playing on consoles. you can if you want but personally i just don't like it. don't know what it'd be like to use as a TV. i used it for my pc to play 1080p 60fps and it's great for that.

some people have complained the display looks washed out but the default settings are terrible. like you would do with any tv/monitor...just calibrate it and tweak settings until you get something you're happy with.

the speakers on it are OK nothing special. if you are into watching movies or listening to music then maybe use separate speakers.

I have a 2008 Viera plasma set and I love it. Looks richer and better than than pretty much any LCD or LED set I see at others' houses, even brand new ones. The one and only downside is it's only 46 inches. I'd like a bigger TV someday but I'm afraid it'll never match this quality.

I'm curious, myself. I just borrowed the 32 inch variant of this and I'm actually kinda shocked with how much I like it.

I replaced my 40" Samsung J6200 with a 40" JU7100. Didn't make a damn difference. That shitty motion blur on blacks is still there as strong as ever. Its a messed up situation that this little 32-inch Vizio is outperforming the 7100 in games. I don't even know if its a panel lottery deal since that 7100 had a Samsung panel. Returned everything and got my money back this evening. I'll hold onto that grand for next year.

This is what I want:
- OLED
- 4K
- 65 in
- HDMI 2.0a (or better)
- Display Port 1.3 (or better)
- No image retention issues

2016 better deliver.

Aside from price, this can be your TV now.
I'm enjoying mine now, but can't wait until the tech improves a bit.

Quoting you because this is what i want as well. But at $1500 to $2000 price range. Also, whats everybody opinion on curved oled screens?

Yeah, the tech is going to improve soon, so I held off. The price was also not good.

Flat is the way to go. Curved is a gimmick that needs to die.

Depends. I was the last person expected to like the curve, and oddly enough I LOVE it. With a giant caveat: It's great for one person. For first person games it's simply the best. I have a 65 screen, and I sit...really damn close. I love having the edges slightly turn to face me, making reading the map and hud elements easier. Before it felt like the image was being projected past me. Now, it feels like they're simply facing me. It's awesome. I never once feel that it's "curved" - just that the image is all fully visible.

But if you need to share the tv with a group then yeah, it's abysmal. Nothing is worse than seeing a distorted image because you're outside of the super small sweet spot.

Well it looks like it is a good budget tv, looking at http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/vizio/e-series-2015 the review looks good mostly, and this random video on Youtube makes it sound like it wont be a bad monitor.

Figured I would ask here if anyone has any Opinions of it.

Sounds good, though I'd personally pay up to $8K or so, and add "low input lag" and "by Japanese manufacturer" to the list. Let's see how long it takes for something like that to hit the North American market.

I'm still looking for
Oled
1080p
50"
No tinting
No Viginetting
No banding
Black bezel and stand
Flat

=(

You'll be waiting a long time as no TV is perfect, look at LCD today still got it's plethora of problems. I've got the LG 960V OLED and it's excellent 99% of the time.
