Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

Okay, I'm in the market for a new TV for the bedroom. I currently have an LCD in there, but those don't really seem to be a big thing anymore. Seems most of the 32"-44" sets are LED, now and I'm not really up to date on exactly what the differences are. It's something with the backlighting, right?

Yeah, but it's still LCD. Just marketing at it's best. LED backlighting is correct. If your looking a 4K, try a Samsung or Sony for the size you indicated.

Yeah, I found a nice 4K 40" Samsung for $450 at Best Buy. That's what I'm looking at right now. I checked it out in-store and it looked great. Just wanted to do a little research on it before I pulled the trigger.

So my current 4K TV doesn't have HDR. Should I go ahead and buy a new one that does have HDR, or wait it out for a while and see what other standards they may toss in?

You might as well wait until next year's models for improved HDR across the board. You'll miss out on any HDR games that come out this year but it'd be worth waiting IMO.

65C6P arrived today. Unlike my unfortunate experience with a P65 I sent back a few weeks ago, this set was delivered safe and sound with no damage.

I'm just gonna watch some Netflix on it before I get down to the nitty gritty setup. Next step is to get an Xbox One S, either this month or during Black Friday.

Just wait.

You aren't missing out on a ton yet. I would wait till 2018 at least for things to shape out.

Getting an excellent deal on a 49 inch Sony X800D in the next couple of weeks. Very excited. I'm going from a seven year old 32 inch Samsung 5-series.

No IPS monitor is dark. They all glow unless you employ local dimming (where portions of the back light can shut off). It's kind of a hack, though, and isn't available on monitors, I believe.

I guess it depends on the quality of local dimming or lack thereof.

Alright cool thankyou. Follow up question -

How dark is a VA panel, specifically an AMVA? I have an OLED TV so I appreciate it won't be OLED levels, but my VA monitor doesn't look hugely darker than my IPS screen and I'm wondering if I just have a decent IPS screen or if there's something wrong with my VA (which otherwise looks fine).

"But perhaps the most interesting unveil at LG’s IFA booth was two OLED prototypes showing HFR (high frame rate) with HLG HDR video clips (100Hz, 10-bit, WCG) from the BBC and the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) over IP streaming and DVB-T2 transmission systems. The benefits of high-res HFR for sports broadcast were indisputable: motion clarity was natively superb without incurring interpolation artefacts as athletes ran across the tracks."

"Our excitement reached fever pitch when pressing the [Channel Up] button on the remote changed the DTV channel and caused a “HLG” notification to pop up on the top right of the screen… we’re only geeks!"

"Judging from the info label, HEVC encoding of high frame rate content appeared to be incredibly efficient bandwidth-wise, with 576p100, 1080p100, 1440p100 and 2160p100 videos consuming only 5Mbps, 15Mbps, 20Mbps and 25Mbps respectively. LG said it will be focusing its HFR R&D on OLED display technology rather than LED LCD due to the former’s near-instantaneous pixel response time."

Anybody in the uk found any good deals on a 4k tv. Has to be 50" or over. Basically my psu in my current plasma is shot and keeps turning off my tv. Im buying Neo day 1 and have a psVR preordered so looking to upgrade anyway. Anyone have any advice? HDR worth it? Im completely useless when it comes to Tv's

LG are full of shit if they claimed this. Would be great to see you link it since they would be blatantly lying

E6 65" Measured peak brightness of 625 cd/m2

CNet Review of their 55" B6 Measured peak brightness of 651 cd/m2

http://www.cnet.com/products/lg-oledb6p-series/2/

Took a while, but found what I posted in April over at british avforums:
https://www.avforums.com/threads/lg-oled-tv-range-2016.2003366/page-138#post-23503291

According to DF LG said that all 65" were supposed to reach 800 nits, while the 55" would be lower. A claim that seemed doubtful.

The next day the video was taken down by request of LG possibly because they supposedly didn't want the press to spill the beans about the DV implementation. Then why invite the press in the first place? Weird.

What's your budget? I can only recommend the 2016 LG OLED series if you're serious about a quality picture. Should have decent input lag with HDR gaming too.

I have the E6 myself. Selfridges have it for 2799 which you can get price matched at Richer Sounds.

Hello people, I'm evaluating to buy the Lg Oled B6 55". I've seen it in the shop and is astounding. I could have it for under 1900 euro and I think nothing would beat it within price range.

Question is: what about input lag? I know it's been already discussed but I remember differences based on tv region (I would get the euro version) and on firmware updates. I would be fine within the 45 ms range, I tried several tvs performing similarly and I thought they were fine even for fast paced games.

It's around 55ms, slightly over 60 outside game mode if you want to play HDR games. This according to rtings at least. It was tested by a user in Europe and it was 44ms in game mode with the latest firmware iirc. No clue about lag outside of it though.

I believe it's 44ish for the UK (and Euro?) version and 55 in the US although apparently a firmware update recently improved the US version but its all up for debate right now.
Yup, edited my post.

My main monitor is also AMVA and find the black levels to be quite a bit darker than the IPS monitors I have. Which model are you using?

A friend of mine picked up an Asus AMVA display and I also found that its black levels were quite poor.

Thanks. If it's actually 44 (and maybe about 50 in HDR) it's good to me. I think I'll get it. I had an eg910 that looked good, but this b6 is truly mindblowing.

It accepts HDR input, hence why it can be marketed as an HDR display. But it can't actually display HDR. Kinda like how old 720p TVs accepted a 1080i signal but couldn't display it.

Damn I was just about to pull the trigger on it. Is there an alternative you would recommend?

I'm looking to purchase a wall mount for the bedroom. The main issue I have is that with the way the room is set up, the TV will not be directly in front of me, but to the side.

I was considering looking into an articulated wall mount so that I could potentially swing the TV more in line with my bed, but from everything that I have read televisions do not stay level (even if the mount itself is perfectly level).

This would be for a 60inch plasma with a Vesa of 400x400.

Are there any articulated mounts where the arm truly stays level after loading the TV? Or are there any mounts that tilt left-right rather than forward?

I have a 60" LED on this and it's level / extremely secure https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00322DKCS/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Was going to buy the 4K 55" Vizio (D55u-D1) as it was on sale here in Canada, but apparently Best Buy no longer carries Vizio, at least from what the gentleman told me. Really want to get into 4K - should I just save my money and bite the bullet and go Samsung or something? Was thinking the KS8000 or something like that? ($2500 CDN right now). Was looking for something arounf that size, and strictly for gaming / netflix. I've been browsing many different sites (including rtings), but the problem I'm having is knowing when to actually upgrade. I don't have a good idea of when new TVs come out.

Or like how the PS3 at launch supported Deep colour, but the first deep colour TV didn't get released until 2015

Maybe these will end up having low input lag also. I can dream.

Don't buy a TV from that guy. He lied to you regarding them selling Vizio.

need to know your price range and goals. Your best bet right now for a compromise of price/quality and getting a true HDR screen would be Vizo, if price is any issue.

If its not the world opens up to you with Sony, Samsung and LG's high ends all hitting on all cylinders depending on if you want LCD or OLED.

OLED Gsync when. In the mean time I will bear the dreaded IPS glow (and offset by keeping a light on at all times).

First TV to have OLED HDR + G-Sync will get ALL my money. All of it. I'm not sure this is even on the radar at all for TV manufacturers, though. Would love to be proven wrong.

Damn, really - straight up, eh? They did have some Vizio units on display, but definitely not as many as I'm used to seeing on their store. From what I remember, he mentioned that they were "in talks of discussing a new contract" with them, and both parties are in that "in between" stage atm.

Interesting, though. I'll look elsewhere for that Vizio I wanted.

I was looking at Vizios too (also from Canada) and could only find them on Costco's website.

They could be phasing them out, but there were some in stock last time I was there.

Anyone with a LG C6 on here? About to pull the trigger, but would love to hear if there are any issues with the C6's (tint, banding, vignetting, etc). I had a LG EG910 last year, but returned it because of the issues above. Some pictures would be awesome too, if possible.

Just bought one and so far so good though I haven't done any heavy duty testing with slides or anything. I'll try and do that this weekend. I did hear that the c6 panels seems to exhibit less issues, but that may be because less are sold. Dunno.

Mine is an iiyama X2783HSU.

From what I can gather it should be pretty good, I just don't know if I'm expecting too much.

I know it won't be OLED black but should it be almost black?

What monitor are you using?

For those with an LG OLED, what does game mode and PC mode disable as far as settings go? Is it still possible to get a good calibration in those modes?

So HDR gaming means 10bit color, and brighter highlights in games. But deep blacks and shadow detail are what worries me. The backlight would be at its max brightness all the time, or would local dimming be turned off.

Then a dynamic environment against static metadata.

The problem is TV manufacturers never ever target the gaming community. That HFR LG OLED prototype is a complete shock to me. Even then the stuff they are showing in it aren't games, lol.

I've been saying this for a while but someone needs to make a TV that's good for movies, sports and games. If I'm paying 5K for a new TV I want it to have better input lag than a $300 27in monitor.

Just a dream of mine. Man if those OLEDs would've had ~15ms input lag that'd be amazing.
