Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

I'm not really a TV guy. What's the best picture quality 1080p set right now? I can see they're phasing out plain 1080p sets. I don't care if it's a Smart TV or not, just a 1080p set with low input lag. Will obviously be used for gaming as well. From what I can see its the 2015 (2016?) Vizio series? Or a Samsung?

Not anymore, if you leave the TV plugged in after you use it (LG TVs) it will clean the screen up.

I had bands to the left and right of my set where the content was slightly darker after watching 4:3 content (with the default super high OLED backlight setting, whoops). Every time you power off the set it does a cleaning. This did not fix the issue. After every 4 hours of use the set does a longer 10-15 cleaning session. This did the trick thankfully :)

I completely agree to both you and ukas. They've been sloppy with their testing for a while.

And seeing how the Leo Bodnar test doesn't support HDR or 4K, then how is RTings getting their input lag numbers? Your guess is as good as mine, since they don't detail their testing method for this. And considering RTings is the only website publishing 4K + HDR input lag numbers, I'm going to ignore the results. I'll wait for the calibrators & AV community to give us numbers that I can trust.

That sure sounds sloppy to me. If you can't get a scientific reading from one instrument, then it's ridiculous to not use another testing method to get true results.

You'd think, right? Nowhere do they publish their testing method(s) for 4K + HDR. See my rant above. :P

Agreed. It's a mess out there.

I have a Samsung KS8500 and just got an Xbox One S. It took several tries for the Xbox to recognize the HDR capabilities and it simply does not work in Game Mode (jittery and flickering). I rebooted, reset, etc. and same deal. Is this a known issue?

The TV is awesome, btw.

Have you enabled UHD Deep Color (might not be exact name) for that particular HDMI input?

Rtings have updated with a bunch of input lag tests for 4K native, with and without HDR: http://www.rtings.com/tv/tests/inputs/input-lag

Weird thing is the B6 is apparently hitting 38.2 ms input lag at 4K native with HDR, while the E6 is at 67.5 ms. So not sure how accurate these figures are, doesn't make sense to me.

whoa cool. rtings took some of my suggestions and made some positive changes in their gaming section. my guess is they were working on it but then HDR gaming came into the picture and kind of forced their hand because of all the questions of input lag with HDR on

Cool, they should also explain their methodology for determining input lag of 4K HDR sources

So what is a good lag time?

Anyone tried the Sony 850D in and out of game mode?

Also which is better? IPS or VA?

I have the 850C which is a very similar tv and the input lag outside of game mode is around 70 ms outside game mode but in 4k/HDR it is 93 ms. The 850D and 850C cannot do game mode in HDR.

I hope sony releases a firmware update for those tvs to inprove input lag for 4k/HDR.

That is great/scary news, I try or don't have the Courage to watch anything 4:3 right now. LG OLED is self healing lol. I love my OLED ever so much and with PC/ gamer mode its perfect for gaming. *drool*

I can get an LG 65EF9509 Oled for 3400 €.

Should I bite or should I wait. Help me Gaf.

It's still a great TV but you should probably wait for the vastly improved B6V/C6V/E6V to drop in price, or check if some website/stores have special offers. In Italy we could buy the B6V for 1980€ until today, and some websites still offer the E6V for 2800€ (4500€ for the 65").

Anything under 50-45ms is good, unless you play competitive games like Street Fighter or you are particularly sensitive to that issue. Iin that case you'd want something around 20-25ms at most, otherwise you're fine with 30-40, probably even with 50ms. Of course the lower the better in any case.

As for IPS vs VA, the former offers better viewing angles but black level is usually not great, while the latter has deeper blacks but terrible viewing angles. I think contrast is much more important in most cases so i'd say get a TV with a VA panel and local dimming (Samsung KS series, Sony X930D/X800D, Panasonic DX902, Vizio P 2016, etc).

A fantastic TV for the price is the Samsung KS8000 if you're looking for something in the 49-55-65", under that (eg 43") the Sony XD800 is a very solid choice. If you want to spend premium bucks get the Panasonic DX902, which is the best LED around, or an OLED 2016 (B6/C6/E6).

You mean this?
"Update 9/14/2016: We are now testing input lag in various resolutions, including 4k and HDR. We've retested all 2016 4k TVs that we bought so far. For testing 4k and HDR, we are using the Leo Bodnar tool chained into the HDFury Integral and the HDFury Linker to upscale to 4k and inject HDR metadata. These tools don't add any significant input lag to the measurements."

Any links to those italian deals?

Wow nice. Sold my older Oppo for the Samsung UHD player.

Can't wait to chuck the Samsung UHD in the bin for the new Oppo.

Thanks for the info about updated input lag tests on rtings. The higher values for chroma subsampling are a concern not present with dedicated monitors.

The market is ripe for more exotic monitors from S. Korea but to target TV as competition this time around. The same brands that pushed 1440p monitors 5 years ago have already done 65" ( LG panels) dedicated 4K monitors with Freesync compatibility, of the IPS variety. I would hope factories like Yamakasi or Wasabi Mango try again but with OLED panels. I've started with a 55" monitor, ended up spending $1900 on a Samsung TV but I would instantly buy a OLED monitor for $2K if it comes out and worry about returning the Samsung later. While Freesync doesn't sound appealing to nvidia gpu users and for the moment, console users, it appears nvidia drivers can be hacked to recognize Freesync displays as mobile g-sync displays and those don't have the G-Sync chips either so it would basically force nvidia's hardware to run Freesync.

It's rumored that Freesync might be coming to consoles, another feature imported Korean monitors support. There is a sizable market of PC users, console-centric consumers and cord cutters that values gaming performance as a major purchase factor. Seems many are willing to work around a lack of a TV tuner and other TV features in exchange for better gaming properties like less input lag and less motion blur.

Notice how that says "updated 09/14?" They hadn't been disclosing that information until then.

I'm still confused as to why they're using the Leo Bodnar tool? I get it, they want the clicks. Still, though, just seems foolish.

How is it foolish to use the Leo Bodnar tool?

What other method are you suggesting?

To be fair, I think it was already mentioned in this thread, though not many seem to have read it. :D

You mean to say that they should use the good old camera method instead?
Guess Leo Bodnar is waiting for the HDR situation to clear up before they release a 4K HDR compatible version.

Old school camera method I'm assuming. Remove the Leo Bodnar tool from the equation.
The Leo Bodnar tool only supports up to 1080p. I've ranted about it above.

RTings should, yes, use the camera method, or, ya know, do what every other AV calibrator/website is doing and wait until the Leo Bodnar supports 4K + HDR.

I am looking for a UHD player, and Oppo is always top of the line, but that thing is HUGE. I don’t even know if that will fit in my cabinet.

My Oppo 93 is about 17 inches wide. The 103 is listed at 16.8 wide so I would expect this one to be about the same. The flagship model is the same width but taller.

I prefer this form factor as it makes it easier to stack another component or console on top of it.

New Oppo UDP-203 UHD player. Should be out by the end of the year. $499.

Oppo's come to save us all. Samsung UDH blu ray player is trash I hate it lol. I cannot wait to get rid of it and get a UDH oppo

Wow nice. Sold my older Oppo for the Samsung UHD player.

I did the same. Sold my BDP93 and moved the 103D to the bedroom. I'm always in for an oppo player.

Hm I gotta say. They more time I spend gaming on my B6, the more frustrating I find ABL. I simply can't believe this isn't a setting that can be disabled. Literally cannot not notice it in GTAV, especially at night in the city.

Weird. It only kicks in for me if I leave it in a pause menu for a while. Using the E6.

One thing I greatly appreciate about LG's OLEDs is the ability to custom scale the image to fill the screen. Using an XRGB, you use the perfect 1:1 scaling mode on the XRGB and then let the TV do the rest. It works well simply because, at 4K, there are so many pixels available, that it doesn't cause visible pixel distortion so the results are very clean, even with scanlines, and you can make a perfect 4:3 image that touches the top and bottom of the screen.

I've only run into it thus far in a couple very bright games. You can see it happen in Sonic Transformed on the first track but, other than that, I don't notice it. It's certainly less dramatic than ABL on plasmas.

Mhhh I can't say that I really notice the ABL to a point where it annoys me on my EG920v. Does the ABL kick in sooner/harder on the 6 series?

You can disable ABL through the service menu, but this can be tricky and possibly voids the warranty.

I was just looking that there is no HDR in game mode on oled Lg. I'm not very much input lag sensitive so it's ok but it's a bummer as I alreasy Set up everything for the picture in that mode

I will get my Xbox one S next week so I will need 3 different set up ?
Game mode (sdr ) standard mode (adapted for movies ) and standard mode (adapted for games )

A bit annoying

I was under the impression you could disable the ASBL (that kicks in after a certain time frame), but not the ABL. Otherwise I'd have been all over it. ABL Happens a second after looking at high contrast areas.

I'm hating the brightness adjusting that is dependant on the amount of white light on screen.

This is what's keeping me from jumping on the E6. Hoping for a firmware update.

Yeah. I'm hoping LG can enable this with a firmware update like some of the other manufacturers have done.

So have the newest rtings measurements been cleared up in the meantime? How could the E6 have higher input lag in 4K HDR mode than the B6? Deeply concerning and I'm waiting for more info once the first HDR games are available.

You're right. The normal ABL can't be disabled in the service menu, only the ASBL.

Well pulled the trigger on a 65" KS8000. Really hope I don't regret getting this over the P65. Now to sell my Day One xbox and get the S and then grab a PS4 pro.

So I can get a 65" Sony ZD9 for £2800 75" for £5000. Do I pull the trigger? My only concern is CES rumours and these sets becoming obsolete.
