Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

Well pulled the trigger on a 65" KS8000. Really hope I don't regret getting this over the P65. Now to sell my Day One xbox and get the S and then grab a PS4 pro.

You won't. I have a 65" KS8000 and a buddy has a P65. I much prefer my TV, from the increased HDR brightness/colors to the actual design of the set and SmartTV interface. They're both great TVs, and the P65 does better with local dimming, but the KS8000 is still my preference and think it's a great choice.

Been to a TV store today with some amazing UHD and HDR demos.

But to be honest, after all the comments like "the sun made me squint" and stuff, I left a little disappointed. Is it really THAT big of a deal?
The side by side demos on HDR TV's I don't believe anyway.

I'd love to see the same demo on a non HDR and HDR TV side by side :/

I was under the impression you could disable the ASBL (that kicks in after a certain time frame), but not the ABL. Otherwise I'd have been all over it. ABL Happens a second after looking at high contrast areas.

I'm hating the brightness adjusting that is dependant on the amount of white light on screen.

ABL kicks in after more than 140 seconds with really high (mostly static) amount of white on screen. Since almost everything today has fast camera cuts, short zooms or different angles I haven't realized it once, even on stuff like frozen planet documentaries. So I imagine you are editing winter landscapes on your OLED with photoshop or where does this problem occur?

And according to several reviews you can turn ABL off, it is just not recommended and if you calibrate your set it should not be a problem in general.

I'd keep an eye out for lag times. I think they are high 40s without HDR

Yup 42ms according to this review https://www.avforums.com/review/sony-bravia-kd-65zd9-zd9-ultra-hd-4k-hdr-tv-review.12797

I am disappointed. Although about 3k higher than what my budget is I was considering it only if it had good input lag on game mode and with HDR while in game mode. This reviewer didn't test for input lag for HDR while in game mode. I don't even know if this set supports that.

The KS8000 is heavily favored not just here but on other av forums as well. I think I'll wait for Sony's 2017 models unless I get a crazy deal around BF for a 65inch KS8000.

Haven't seen a proper review for it yet tbh which is another thing holding me up.
Do you have a source for these lag measurements? Don't think I'll mind the 40ms tbh I used to play on 80+ panels back in the day that were terrible but tvs now are pretty good generally speaking. I'd stick to a monitor for competitive games.

If you really just want a TV for HDR gaming I would just wait how "our" impressions will be once the first games are out. I love HDR stuff on Netflix, Ama and UHD BR, not sure about games yet^^

I was just looking that there is no HDR in game mode on oled Lg. I'm not very much input lag sensitive so it's ok but it's a bummer as I alreasy Set up everything for the picture in that mode

I will get my Xbox one S next week so I will need 3 different set up ?
Game mode (sdr ) standard mode (adapted for movies ) and standard mode (adapted for games )

A bit annoying

Stay away from standard mode! Use ISF dark and bright and you are good to go.

Unless I'm mistaken, you're referring to ASBL. ABL as I understand it is not a setting you can turn off, happens dynamically, and the dimming is determined by how much White is on the screen. It's super noticeable when using most computer programs, especially a web browser with tabs.

Again as I mentioned, it drove me crazy in GTAV when, at night, I walked by illuminated store windows. The screen constantly tried to adjust the brightness depending on if I was near a dark wall or a bright window. It's maddening.

It's also noticeable in cutscenes in The Witcher 3 when characters are on different backdrops. Very jarring and I definitely don't like it.

It very difficult for me to noice in movies though.

Has anyone toyed with the PS4's current HDR output with the latest Vizio P series? Hooked the console up to the first HDMI port with a current standard HDMI cable, turned on HDR and then everything just looked like it had a green tint over it. Was looking through the TV's tablet to see if there was anything that said HDR was active, but given that everything had the green haze look to it, I think something fucked up. I know there's nothing on the current PS4 to actually take advantage of it, but I was just testing the input lag and then the gross color shit came up.

I'm not sure if my TV supports HDR.

I have a hospitality/corporate Samsung TV, I think it is this model:
http://www.samsung.com/us/business/displays/hospitality-tvs/HG48ND690UFXZA
I believe it is a 2016 TV.

I tried calling Samsung customer support to find out but the person on the line was clueless, they didn't even know what HDR was when I asked.

In the menu I noticed a setting for "UHD Color". It reads:

"This mode is optimized for UHD 50p/60p 4:4:4 and 4:2:2 signals. Before setting up this mode you need to unplug the HDMI cable from the TV"

How can I tell if my Samsung TV supports HDR?

Apparently it does.

KS8000 seems like it ticks all the right boxes but at the end of the day it's still edge lit. Def going to wait until next year to see the new models.

Just picked up an 65 inch LG E6. Anyone have recommended settings?

I am finding the screen is not as bright as my old Samsung ES8000. It tends to grey when it should be white. Example would be NHL 17, the ice isn't white, like a grey hue. Definitely not a bright TV in non-4K resolutions.

I have to say I don´t use a PC with the E6. Is this happening in all screen settings? Firmware is the current one? GTAV and Witcher on PC? Just fired up the PS4 versions and there was nothing.

My KS8000 is shipping soon. How's the local dimming? is it that bad?

The only time I ever notice it is if there's a small white object on an otherwise black screen, e.g. A loading spinner, white text on full black.

It's extremely rare and when it happens it's usually an instance where the local dimming is unimportant, IMO.

In normal viewing/gaming conditions, its unnoticeable, including 16:10 content that has black bars.

Yeah it happens on every screen, current firmware. I can trigger it really easily when using my PC and browsing the web, since different tabs will cause it. It might be subtle in movies but in games it's really obvious.

I've tried upping the OLED light to 100 and then lowering contrast from there. Still not much luck

From what I've read about ABL, it's just part of the technology. A really shitty part that needs to be removed.

weird, have a C6 and I haven't really noticed it in games. At the desktop yeah it is obvious when bringing up a white screen. I keep my OLED light somewhat low though, around 40-50, maybe it helps with staying under the ABL threshold.

I'll try lowering the OLED light when I get back. Maybe that will help. It's still a stupid feature. Anything that auto adjusts brightness is the devil.

I find that only happens on my OLED when it's a static screen, it does not dull when there is motion.

ABL is only forced on OLED sadly to meet tougher power restrictions. I'm sure there is a way to go into service menu and disable it if you want.

I think it was the AVF review I saw them. I don't personally think that lag-time in the 40s is that bad (I game on a b6 which has at least as slow input lag) but I'm a casual gamer rather than someone who needs every ms. My caution was more aimed at HDR which is bound to add a bit to the lag-time, which may make it unacceptable to some, especially when paying out 5k+ for a TV.

Standard mode is just off in every way and not even close to natural. It is fine if you like that though. Are we talking general isf modes or a certain tv? Just in case: what stops you from adapting the color temperature?

People who are waiting for 2017 LCDs, what specifically are you waiting for?

I was going to wait for cheaper FALD sets but honestly, I don't see that happening. I think FALD is going to be reserved for the flagship from the likes of Sony and Samsung.

Oh, i always wondered why ABL is on OLEDs. I thought it is there to prevent damage to the pixels, but then why can a certain amount of pixels be really bright without being damaged?
So the whole ABL thing is there to reduce power consumption because of federal regulations?

I talk about my case oled c6
Overall I'm more neutral/cold temperature. I don't like warm feels like a pee filter lol

Can anyone find input lag values for Sony KD-65XD7505 ?
There's a great offer on German Amazon for that.
But low input lag (<50ms) is a must

Still searching for that option. Service menu looks a bit daunting, but if it actually provides a shutoff for ABL then I'd do it.

My current setting is 100 OLED and 60 contrast and it's very noticeable walking down a street in GTAV. Up on the top of a mountain it's also a pain - pan the camera up to the sky and stop, wait a second, and it dims. So annoying.

Probably just me that's sensitive to it though.

I had bad experiences with it in GTAV too.

Goddamn ABL is basically the opposite of HDR. Won't miss it when I get rid of my plasma.

So I can get a 65" Sony ZD9 for £2800 75" for £5000. Do I pull the trigger? My only concern is CES rumours and these sets becoming obsolete.

As someone who doesn't follow TV tech news, what are those CES rumours? I'm about to buy a 55X930D, so I might hold off if there's something far better coming from Sony next year. Thanks !

Once you see it you can't unsee it unfortunately.

This is my big concern too - it is at its worst when HDR is at its best. I really don't understand it. Guess the best I Can do is ignore it. Or complain to LG.

or both

New Oppo UDP-203 UHD player. Should be out by the end of the year. $499.
