Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

Has anyone that purchased a 55 inch wished they had gone with 65 inch instead? Now i cant decide on size after checking out the tv's in person lol

Thinking of getting an LG OLED C6 model in a couple of days mainly for gaming. Does this TV suffer from screen burn in when playing games with a static hud for a couple of hours at a time?
I abhor the very existence of a curved TV, but the curve on the C6P is almost unnoticeable. It's that subtle.

This is my video output on my 4K TV. Do I need to turn on the HDCP? Or just keep it off?

HDCP is mostly a security measure for handshake stuff over HDMI. Certain content might require HDCP 2.2 or whatnot to properly display on the TV(I think its mostly for Blu-Ray's and streaming).

It also can cause some unforeseen derpiness as the handshake acts like a session of "Papers Please!" checking every signal meticulously to ensure it only allows approved handshaking content through. PSVR pass-thru especially causes all sorts of nonsense as it limits HDCP protocol to the older 1.4 version and 4K signals get all uncomfortable with that causing occasional blackouts and flickering as the TV is like "what is this shit?"

HDMI in some ways made Input connections so much easier than ever before as it unified both video and audio, but lately its gone to shit with the handshaking security nonsense. Leave it off unless you run into problems displaying something.

So no UHD bluray player currently supports dolby vision, right? I'm guessing next year we will see a few of them. Excuse my ignorance but what does that mean for current UHD discs? Do current UHD movies only support hdr10? If I buy a UHD player that supports dolby vision and put a copy of the revenant (for example) it will only play in hdr10? Kind of confused here.

Will this gen have an hdr10 vs dolby vision war? Some movies exclusively supporting dolby and others hdr10?

All UHD players support HDR10 so Revenant will use that.
And yeah, next year we'll see players with both.

As far as the "war" and exclusivity, think of it like Dolby Digital sound and DTS.

Question: LG's site says the B6 supports Dolby Vision. Doesn't Dolby Vision have a target of 4,000 Nits (and up to 10,000)?

The OLEDs don't even come remotely close to 4,000 nits. What am I missing?

Dolby Vision includes processing technology to roll off colors / brightness to the display's capabilities. Dolby is mastering in one format and then the displays and projectors can account for that across theatres and home. This is similar to how Dolby moved to object-based 3d sound with Atmos... every theatre is set up differently, but Atmos can adjust for that across the board so only one 3D mix needs to be created

Basically the B6 accounts for what it can hit and correctly rolls off at the right points.

This is one of the primary reasons Dolby Vision looks / performs better than the average HDR10 title right now.

I believe OLED screens aren't measured the same as LCD, it's not universal. The perfect blacks allow for a lower max nits value.

Anecdotal, but

Friend got a 70" Samsung 6300 4K HDR set for $1000 on Black Friday and was pretty happy with it. He came over and played with my 55" LG OLED B6 that I got for $1500 and says he regrets his purchase lol... would rather take the much smaller OLED

Is there a TV with full array lightning, OLED, HDR10, 4:4:4 colour, WCG, and all low input lag with this all turned on in game mode? Is there such a dream tv on the horizon at CES?

Heh. This is the "dream" tv I'm waiting for as well before I make the leap. Guessing it will be a few years before something like that even becomes remotely affordable.

That's good to know. Was afraid it would be distracting. Will see it again on display before making a final decision.

What size is your tv? 55"? 65"?

Mine is a 55" which I went with mostly due to cost but also for supposed better uniformity( which is great from what I can tell on my set). Good luck on your choice!

Haha nice. I returned a 65" KS8000 for a 55" C6. No regrets:)

I noticed on my B6 like once an hour (probably every couple of hours) I get a millisecond of black screen (not via ps pro).

Anyone else got that?

Can anyone give me an idea of how good the Panasonic TX-40DX700B 4K HDR tv is? It's quite cheap on Amazon but not sure its worth it.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat

Yup. Out on the C6 as well.

Here's a pic from the other thread.

Ratchet and clank seems pretty snappy to me. Need someone to do real lag tests.

Also, the only adjustments I made to HDR game mode were to reduce sharpness to 0 and turn off super resolution. Make sure you have your black level set appropriately to what your console is outputting.

I posted a picture of ratchet and clank on avs forum. Can't link it though.

I'm officially baffled by settings now. I'm thinking this changed, but in HDR Game mode, you can now change color gamut (wide, normal, extended).

So now between the various settings on the Xbox One and PS4 Pro.. and the color gamut and black level setting on the E6P, I'm totally confused.

There's no doubt my Xbox One looks goofy, with blacks crushed. I noticed the Xbox side had 8/10/12 bit and standard or PC RGB color.

Ugh.

On Xbox One, black level should be set to standard and color to 10 bit. Black level should be set to Low on LG.

Color Gamut should be set to normal for all HDR content. It is the most accurate. WCG is still used by LG automatically when appropriate.

The last plasma gen on the other hand...
I'm seeing some people sell their VT60s for 1-1.5k which is amazing for a TV.

Seriously?

I have an ST50 (or ST60 I can't remember) but I'm moving across the country next year and I don't think it can make it. I was thinking of just selling it and waiting a bit for an OLED deal

Do you know values for ps4 pro and lg too?

Good news about the E6 input lag update. It's just a shame I couldn't get past the ABL to embrace this screen, as it would have been perfect otherwise.

I also found a video that precisely demonstrates why I found ABL to be bullshit, ironically while viewing the same content I was:

Little surprise for those waiting on the Oppo 203 Blu-ray player.

Did you ever try turning it off in the service menu?

It's easy to circumvent the (subtle IMO) ABL by increasing the OLED light and reducing the contrast.

Hoping that someone heard of this issue somewhere: does anyone have a persistent background white noise sound on their LG B6? On my set most of the time if it's not muted there's an annoying background noise. It can be louder than the actual sound of whatever is playing on the TV if volume is set to 1 or 2. It randomly doesn't happen sometimes after turning on the TV but most of the time it's there.

Does anyone know anything about this? Thanks in advance.

Tried that, but it was still noticeable. Plus I'm someone who really values vibrancy so I tend to have contrast at a high setting (but have also learned not to have dynamic contrast cranked too high that it reduces detail).

And agian, the kind of content you're watching can make the effect more noticeable or less. Anime and animation in general is a big one, and I've heard it's particularly nightmarish for fans of hockey.

I've watched a ton of hockey on mine, more than anything so far. Again, with contrast and OLED light set properly it isn't an issue. It's sure as hell better than the crowd being a gray mass because an edge-lit display can't have the ice white and still properly display anything outside the playing surface. It's even better than the FALD set I had, because the backlighting algorithm would get confused during hockey.

I have 0 issues with hockey and I watch it almost daily.

Now you are making me scared to buy one of these OLEDS because I play video games and watch anime.

In the end, your eyes don't lie: check it out in a store, or even buy it with a store that has a return policy (and hopefully no restock fee).

It might not bother you, or you might have the ideal living conditions for it (apparently this set is better suited for a living room with lots of lighting vs a private bedroom with medium lighting, which was my mistake). Just don't let people sway you one way or the other without experiencing it yourself.

Please explain why you think OLED is better suited for higher ambient lighting than lower ambient lighting.

Check it yourself. Don't let others make a decision for you. The only regret I have right on the TV is I made a mistake on putting it on the living room. I should had put it on my room instead. I'm thinking of buying 65" TV for the living room.
