Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

I'm about to pull the p,lunge on this. Is tis the TV everyone goes on about that has little inpute lag and great picture qulaity, making it perfect for gaming.

Model name is Sony KDL42W654

Yes, it's w654 because it has the silver bezel, w653 is the black bezel model. Here's the HDTest page that everyone looks at...HDTV Test - Sony KDL42W653.

I'm so tempted to get one myself but i just can't bring myself to pull the trigger just yet.

Yep definitely buying it, if anyone knows if I can get it cheaper than £530 in the UK let me know. Funny thing is I am not buying a PS4 at launch (will buy it when Destiny comes out), but will do some hardcore gaming sessions in the next few months and finish my backlog.

Thanks, I'm gonna take the plunge, I even realised it's available in Argos so I don't have to order it from Amazon and can just pick it up.

If you live near a Richer Sounds it's maybe worth grabbing one from there, 5 year guarantee I think, and you always have the option of demoing it before you hand any monies over.

Edit, it's £520 from Richer sounds with 5 years guarantee.

don't know how much longer I can wait to make this decision.... anyway has anyone tried BestBuy or Sony's 24 month payment plan? if you miss a payment you're fucked... and I read with BestBuy at least you might want to pay alittle more than the monthly payment plan, if you are going to use direct deposit, because BestBuy might/will increase the minimum by alittle bit out of the blue....or something like that.

I can pay off the Sony W900 right now...but I might want to do these payment plans if it buys me time, just in case my car seriously breaks down or something. (its running great, but I'm a person who is constantly thinking of the just in case scenarios)

also if I buy this TV right now...and for some chance it is on sale at a different location, with in the 14 days...will Both of these places match it and credit me? or only in house sales?

there's someone in the comments stating that TV is being falsely advetised on these 2 points

This TV does not have Motion Flow.
This TV is not 200HZ.

I dont know if what they say is true best to check up on that

If you have a dark room with a big open wall I'd go with a Panasonic PT-AE8000U and a decent 100" screen. Only issues are the above mentioned space requirements, cost (well under $3000), audio comes separately, and 34ms of lag in game mode. This is what I will have my PS4 hooked up to in only 10 days :) And Xbone a week later. Cant wait.

The hdtvtest review states:

The KDL42W653A is advertised by Sony as featuring Motionflow XR 200Hz, but it’s important to understand that this is simply a figure for marketing purposes (similar to Samsung’s Clear Motion Rate or LG’s TruMotion), rather than the true refresh rate of the TV.

Interestingly, the Sony W653 doesn’t have any [Motionflow] control available in its user menu, but does offer an [LED Motion Mode] option which activates backlight scanning on the television. When enabled, motion resolution jumped to 1080 (the maximum value possible in the FPD Benchmark test pattern), but three undesirable side effects ensued: a drop in luminance; increased flicker that was especially noticeable on bright scenes; and double ghosted image on moving objects. In other words, although [LED Motion Mode] significantly reduced motion blur, it came with several shortcomings which made it pretty much unusable in our opinion. Your mileage may vary.

So it sounds like it's using a simplified (or cut down) version of the motionflow tech, aren't the motionflow TV sets normally a bit pricier though?

Still worth knowing I guess before buying.

Is motionflow and 200Hz required to get the best gaming. Remember my main requirement for this TV is gaming, all I want to know is, will I get the best experience for gaming for a 42inch thats not a plasma.

Don't take what I say as gospel, but AFAIK most of these motionflow type processing (and other post processing that TVs do) will be turned off, or seriously toned down in gaming modes, as it's all this post processing that generally creates massive input lag. Through scouring AVforums, and a ton of review sites I always thought that the whole motionflow tech (and whatever the other TV makers call it) was good for broadcast TV and sports, but a lot of die hard film buffs say that it can ruin films, as they were filmed @ 24fps and really need to be played back at the same rate for optimal viewing, and games should really be the same.

As I said above don't take what I say as 100% truth, it's just my opinion from what I've read, and it's only the really hi end TVs that appear to have truly outstanding inter frame interpolation (I think that's what it's called), but you're talking about spending over twice as much as what the set you are looking at costs.

It's something I'll ask the chap who will be coming to calibrate my projector in the next few weeks.

TBH for the money that set looks like it's perfect for gaming, most plasmas will have higher input lag, but better picture quality albeit with a reflective glass screen, higher electricity bills and the chance of image retention. If you were mainly watching films and doing a little bit of gaming Plasma wins out, but for serious gaming an LED screen should be better.

any canadians out there have any recommendations for a low budget HDTV set that would work nicely for ps4/x1?

500ish

was checking out monitors too like BenQ

Definitely check out the Insignia 46" 1080p TV on sale for 399 at Best Buy right now. The guy said the panel is from last years Samsung model and the picture is honestly gorgeous on my screen. I bought mine with the exact same parameters as you. Low budget but needed something better (1080p bigger size) for next gen! The TV is surprisingly sharp looking as well, I love the thin border. I had a tough time biting the bullet on an Insignia over a Sony or Samsung but definitely am happy I didn't pay the extra $300 for a brand name when this quality is just as good.

Wow, not bad and great price. Is there a 60" with the same panel?

Sorry for the overload of gifs guys, last ones, I promise. :)

I just want to give people that are tossing up the ST60 model a 'real world' comparison, so they can work out whether or not input lag could be an issue for them, as it's something I wish I had to make my decision easier. I'm glad I took the plunge, it's been a beautiful set so far.

Anyway, tests. I took some recommended games from earlier and tried the same test on my 50ST60 and my PC monitor which from a quick Google has about 5ms input lag, so extremely low.

For me: I can notice it in game, but just barely. If the ST60 had any more lag than this I'd probably return it for the W900, but thankfully it's not a deal breaker.

VT60 is a better alternative right? I heard it's better for games.

Been looking at this as well. How's the input lag on it? That's my main concern with this.

Any in AMerica below 45", like say 32-42? I really want something small because my room is tiny and I have no room for a large TV. I'm really tempted to buy this...

Yeah I am curious about this as well - does it have game mode? just awaiting before i pull the trigger :-)

Both best buy and future shop's listing say no game mode so I doubt it. That input lag site I've seen in other treads had other (smaller) insignia models, all with great(or excellent) input lag so who knows. Fingers crossed lol

Any help I can get on an American gaming TV? In the 40's and 50's range size wise. Preferably not ridiculously expensive, but I can she'll out something.

I was looking at Sony's W8 series but I'm not sure if I wanna put that much out right away.

I just wanted to update an earlier poster who was interested in one of the mid range Sony Projectors as my Sony vpl-hw55es turned up last week, and I've only just had a chance to plug it in today for a test run (busy with work and I had to rewire the surround sound system).

Well, this thing is awesome, I've only really tested it out on Wipeout HD in 3D, and had a friend around to watch transformers dark of the moon in 3D (I'm a sucker for big bad hollywood films from time to time). Just out of the box with no calibration or tweaking at all and Wipeout HD looked fantastic, and felt pretty darn responsive, more so than my LG 50" Plasma set. And playing it in 3D on a 92" screen is just amazing. I did notice a little lag at first, but once set to it's gaming mode I can honestly say I didn't feel any; Although TBH I'm not as susceptible to input lag as some other folk are. Regarding the input lag, some reviews have the previous (vpl-hw50es) model timed at 16ms, others 34ms whilst in game mode, and until some reviews and tests of this piece of kit come out I've no way of knowing whether this has been improved on the newer model.

Out of the box the colours were really good, the blacks nice and dark, and with the game in 3D and watching the 3D movie there was very little crosstalk, just a few occasions during some hectic scenes in the film did I notice a tiny bit, but much less than on some very good TVs I've watched 3D films on.

I should be hooking the PC up to it this weekend, and hopefully setting it up properly (my floor isn't completely flat under the floor mounted projector, so needs the spirit level treatment). Hopefully the PC will run through it well too, I may have to get that there NVidia 3D software for a few games.

All in all I'm completely sold on this projector, and having that big screen just sucks you in so much. To cheezcake, this piece of kit gets a big thumbs up from me, I now can't wait till it gets professionally calibrated.

The wait for Australian availability begins

A 50-inch VT60 just arrived in my living room. Running those d-nice prep slides to get some hours on before really using it. Should be properly broken in before the 29th. Killzone and Resogun will give my eyes satisfaction.

I had an old Panasonic G10 before, and I did end up with some slight burn-in on it. So I'm taking some precautions with this on.

Got a dilema

should I wait until BF to get a TV?,

since PS4 drops way before that I dont want to play it on the same tv I been gaming since 2006

aint sure if I can keep myself from doing that hahaa,

isnt BF a chaotic day with deals you need to be lucky and early to get?.

Been looking at this as well. How's the input lag on it? That's my main concern with this.

It's been great in my time so far. Mind you I've only tried out Uncharted 2/3, God of War III, and The Last of Us, but all have played great! I watched some HD Hockey last night and it is absolutely gorgeous, don't buy the 120Hz for Sports BS.

Input lag is noted at I think 6.5ms which is great I will try out an FPS right away and post my impressions! Glad to help people out this TV is awesome for the money, every person that has seen it has been blown away that I only paid 400.

EDIT Just tried Metro Last Light hooked up through my PC on 1920x1080 and High settings, and wow gorgeous. This TV is awesome, and there is no delay at all that I noticed.

Hoy hoy. I've been thinking of going for either the Panasonic VT65 or the Sony KDL-55W905A (which I hear has around 10ms response time).

Can anyone give me any recommendations as to these or any other high-end TVs?

I've gone down the path of getting my Sony KVHR32 hooked up withy Wii U. Yes, a crt tv.

Wow, it's been a long time between drinks, the cry colors are fantastic and virtual console games look perfect! While the tv only does 1080i, it's still HD, but it's the non-hd performance which draws me. Motion is great as well, but it's the graceful performance of non-hd material which has won me.

Any others here still using crt for their gaming fix?

You should also go with his reference day/night/3D settings for VT60 when you're done with slides, at least for BR movies if not for games. Shit looks insane with his settings :)

I'm looking for a widescreen television for my Nintendo Wii U & Super Nintendo. Do you guys have any recommendations on models, sizes, etc.?

The wait for Australian availability begins

I had to wait nearly two months for mine, but it was worth it.

Tried a bit of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 in 3D and Flower last night.

My only complaint is that I can notice a few more jaggies now playing on such a big screen, can't wait to get the PC hooked up to it this weekend (Gotta do a HDMI run around the skirting board though, bit of a pain).

So I think I'm gonna get an S60. This will be my first plasma tv so is there anything I need to know about it like image retention, burn in, and any inherent issues with the tech. I remember reading about buzzing and dithering or something, how noticeable do those get?

Does anybody have the Sony KDL55W802A tv with a computer hooked to it??? If so, are you running a DVI to HDMI or just HDMI? Is one of the HDMI ports dedicated (on the set/ dedicated port) to it? Thanks for any help. I am leaning to this tv unless I can come up with another 500 to get the 900.

Got the w900 and there HDMI1 has ARC, HDMI2 has MHL, the others don´t have anything special that i´m aware of. I have a HTPC hooked to it via an AVR and setting the picture mode to "graphic" is the way to go (compared to my old LG, text is just so much clearer and better to read on the Sony).

Thanks for the advice. Can you tell me what the ARC and the MHL mean? Kind of a noob when it comes to this stuff. Thanks for the help again mate!

MHL is Mobile Hi-Definition Link and is used to connect your Smartphone to the TV/Display.
ARC is Audio Return Channel and is where the audio travels back down the HDMI cable from the TV so it can be rerouted by the Amp/Reciever. I think.

Someone will have a better definition of ARC i'm sure :)

One thing i´d like to mention about the ARC, IMO the usability depends on the kind of audio stuff your TV can pass through. This is the only thing i´m not too happy about with the Sony W900, as it only seems to pass through Dolby Digital 5.1 but not DTS or 5.1/7.1 PCM audio (those formats all arrive as 2ch audio).

The W650A series have 4 4 4 chroma and low input lag right? All i can find is this article stating that the W6 series has both however this review is for the W653.

I'm about to buy the 50W650A but i want to make sure it fits my needs.

All 65x are the same internally.

ok guys, i've read S60 and VT60 are both great for gaming. i guess one difference is that the VT has 3D. i'm on the fence :(

Increasingly less happy with my S60. Idk if I'm sitting too close but everything looks kinda pixely compared to my roommate's LED Emerson from like 3-4 years ago. Any calibrations or configurations for gaming? I couldn't see shit inside buildings in BF4 with settings I was using.

The S60 doesn't have an anti-reflective coating either, so if that might be a problem for you then you should probably go with the VT60 if you can.

Well, my Sony KDF-E50A10 is damn near un-watchable at this point. Looking for something at least 50 inches. Can't be plasma because the lighting in this room can't be controlled well. No smart TV/3D crap wanted. Budget is around $1000. Thanks for any recommendations.

My 50'' S60 is being delivered tomorrow from Amazon. Hoping it arrives in good shape. So hype! Gonna play some Rayman Legends since I know it's native 1080p.
