Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

If I was currently in the market for a TV I'd jump all over the Panny VT60. My 55" GT30 from 3 years ago is a marvelous television. Grab those plasma's while you still can!

OLED's dead, baby. OLED's dead.

Not shocked being it's now where LCD was in the early 90's. It was going to be another 5 - 10 years before it became viable for consumer TVs.

First SED, now OLED. What hope is left on the self-emitting pixel front?

Whatever happened to LaserTV?

Thanks. My friend has a vt 60 and the picture is awsome, but for my gaming room a 42 panel is big enough. I think a 50 panel could be too big, because even with 1080p resolutions viewing distance still matters - so i think the 42gt60 would be a great choice for me.
For the distance you mentioned, seems like it.
On more question: most people say to go with the color temperature warm for the pana plasmas, but when comparing to my eizo monitor that runs a 6500k i thing warm is a little bit too warm, while normal is a little bit colder compared to my eizo mintor.

What´s your take on that.
The suggestion is not using Warm without calibration, but calibrating for it.

Personally I tend to use "normal", but the perfect calibration values for "normal" and "warm" vary quite a bit. I don't think toggling between those settings is ever gonna pull good results; you have to change everything accordingly... And that's the hard part.
And the last one: My friend is using his vt only during night time and runs it with contrast 50 and we both think that looks great and is enough, but cnet and other side always talk about putting the contrast at 80, but we thing thats much too high and not necessary.
Seems like a calibration meant for day usage. I reckon most night calibrations fall within the contrast 60 value.

But I haven't calibrated mine, so I'm saying this by memory.
Also: HDMI content type is on auto, is that ok so? And if you check auto, everything is marked except cinema (thats default). Why is that and should be cinema marked as well?
Should be, modern HDMI devices have a thing called handshake, which is basically the device telling your TV what it is to ensue it gets properly recognized.

Other settings are mostly only there to force misdetections and the like. For as long as it works I'd leave it untouched.
One of the reasons given for the failure of the partnership was the failure to increase the lifespan of the panels.

People seem to be forgetting that while looking forward to OLED offerings and paying big bucks for them... The current OLED tech usually lasts 15.000 operation hours. And that's far from solved even if every manufacturer on earth is trying not to talk about that; alas, it's certainly not solved precisely because they don't want to talk about it.

The other reason was inability to reduce costs significantly.

2014 is looking like a bad year for TV's; unless Samsung just delivers on the Plasma front. I'm not counting on it, hence bought a VT60 (I also kinda dislike Samsung, but I could put that aside in for a plasma).
We also get those funky touch pens (which I see absolutely no use for).
No we don't. Unless some countries do, mine didn't bring one and the manual says it's not supposed to.

Only ST60's bring it.

Welp.

edit:
WOW->

As long as I can still buy OLED in a few years then all will be OK. I think once they actually hit the market they'll do well since they are gorgeous in person and will actually hold up well in stores. Price and longevity just need to improve considerably first.

Honestly, with this news about OLED and me not really caring about 4k tv's (just prettier lcd's, imo) I think in 5 years time I'll just invest in a really good projector. That seems like the proper way forward to me.

Quick question for anyone with a VT60. I've had mine for about a month now, and the whole time I've noticed this faint bar that goes vertically down the right side of the screen. It's kind of hard to explain, but it's about half an inch thick and basically just makes that side look a little lighter than the rest of the screen. Does anyone else have this with their VT60? Searching for the issue, it seems like an issue with the filter and all VT60s have this issue, so maybe it's not as bad on some or not as noticeable to some people? Either way, it drives me crazy, but I'm kinda OCD when it comes to these things.

I'm the hopefully proud owner of a Sony KDL-42W655A. So far, it looks awesome. And the TV is huge compared to what it looked like in the store. What trickery is this?

Sony KDL-55W900A
I'm really considering this for my gaming TV. But the price is twice as the s60.
What my Q really is that, Will the price drop on this TV any time soon? I could wait 2 months if I have to, I'm in no hurry.

The VT60 is getting nicely warmed up now, 170ish hours and I broke out Koyaanisqatsi yesterday and then Blade Runner and Samsara today.

The picture quality on the Samsara Blu Ray is out of this world, it looks 3D (it isn't) and if someone told me I was watching 4K footage I'd believe them. Emotionally it doesn't have the impact for me that Koyaanisqatsi does, but for out and our PQ I don't think there's anything in 1080p that can beat it.

The Panny was more than up to the task and it's just getting better!

Just with break-in slides or actual content?

I'm sooo close on pulling the trigger on a P65VT60. But man, the price difference between the 55'' and 65'' is almost 800EUR here in Germany. And to think I was completely set on getting (just) the 50'' model to replace my 4 years old 50'' S50. But after seeing that 65'' VT60 in person ... damn.

I genuinely can't see this on my set. I've never run slides though, just full screen content until recently watching some letterbox movies.

Stores are big and you were standing up

W65x is a great set, shame it isn't out in the US, but then they get such great pricing on the W900 I find it difficult to feel too much sympathy ;)

Actual content. I ran the break-in slides for 100 hours and then started watching content. That's when I noticed it. Then again, I didn't really look at the screen during the break-in period.

Hmmm then I would look into trying to have it resolved. Sometimes with the slides I could convince myself I was seeing things but during actual content I couldn't.

I guess. There's a 46" W9 model for $1450, but I didn't feel like spending that much money on an LCD. :P So much I've been hearing about the excellent black levels of Sony's W series, but I'm not sure if I see any difference between this TV and my 4 year old cheap LG LED monitor in that regards. As far I can see black is still pretty much grey. :P Otherwise it looks really nice, colors are awesome and it really is super responsive in game mode(which looks fine anyway). Out of game mode feels good too, and looks about the same. I've only tested my PS3, I need to try out some blu-ray movies and the 24p playback thingy. LED Motion Mode is pretty interesting in that gets rid of the LCD motion smear, but the picture is just too dark to be usable. I'm more than used to that crap anyway by now. :P

I'm only disappointed that the audio balance option only works for speaker mode and not when plugging in headphones. I don't hear too well out of my left ear so I was counting on this option. :/ Why even bother including this if it doesn't work when using headphones?

Weird. Mine did. I have no idea what to do with it!
Hide it from children.

Still I'm jelly, you have more toys than I do. :P

I haven't seen that on mine yet, but perhaps I simply didn't spend enough time with it yet.

Ok here in Canada the Zt60 is 4300$ and the vt55 is 2500$ is the 5inch difference and the quality of the panel worth the difference????

IIRC they have the same panel but the ZT has a different filter and the front glass is bonded directly to the plasma screen rather than leaving an air gap as in every other plasma model. They are very similar, but the filter on the ZT gets you ultimate black levels.

Edit, my bad, it's not the black levels - it's ambient light glare the ZT filter nails. The ZT will be better in a room with lots of natural light to fight against.

SIZE DOES MATTER

You were completely correct until the last sentence. ZT and VT can be calibrated to the same black level, so if you have a dark room/HT setup the ZT is a waste. If you do a majority of your viewing with ambient light, the filter on the ZT may be beneficial.

Yeah, I edited, I wasn't sure and had to go look up the benefits of the ZT filter :-) doh!

You need to go to a smaller independent shop to get that pricing down a bit. I don't know where you live, but I was quoted closer to $4K.

Always go for the bigger size if you can swing it. Nothings worse then saying that you could have gone bigger, after the fact.

Also have you had anyone confirm what you are seeing or "think" you are seeing?

I have imposed a ban on myself from reading the avsforum because it was making me too paranoid about issues others were having.

After a few days with my VT60, I want to marry this thing. From movies to games, this things looks utterly incredible, and I haven't even calibrated it yet! (using THX mode)

^ Good to know.

I think I'm going to pull the trigger on a VT60. It'll be in a fairly well lit room with a lot of windows but seeing as how all of the LCD/LEDs in the same price range fall way short in comparison I'm just going to buy some better curtains.

What is the likelihood of VT60s being readily available closer to spring/summer? I already waited too long on the S60 and now you can't find them. I'd rather not have the VT slip away from me too but I really won't need another tv til closer to summer.

Yes. It should even support MKVs but I've had mixed success. It also has DLNA built in, so you can access servers - it sees my plex server directly, and if you have an iPhone/iPad you can browse Netflix/YouTube and send videos direct to the TV (much nicer than trying to search and navigate using a TVs remote)

As in it'll only support certain file types? The phone steaming thing does sound pretty cool. Fingers crossed it can stream from my Macbook

I haven't had anyone confirm, as it's just me and my girlfriend that live here and she can't even tell the difference between a DVD and a Blu-Ray. I've been noticing it for a while and it was driving me crazy so I did a search and saw the same thing mentioned on avsforum. Though now that I'm looking for it I can't find it. The set is getting replaced on Saturday anyway since the base was bent in the corner and Best Buy said they can't replace just the base so they're delivering me a new one. I'm hoping it doesn't also have the issue.

I really have to thank whoever shared the W655 settings from some AVSforum guy, Blu-ray movies look unreal on this thing. The default, automatic picture setting is totally hideous. :lol

Nil on readily available at spring/summer.

I believe Panasonic has already stopped manufacture of new PDPs and without panels you can't build TVs. So it's safe to say that plasma TV production has effectively ended at Panasonic, so when the last ones are gone, they are gone forever.

Great. I really didn't want to drop that kind of cash so soon after the holidays and we've got some other home improvement stuff going on right now. Meh, maybe I'll look around more.

There's always QLED!
