PlayStation 4 Pro Reviews

Great to see so many positive reviews. And CNET, please don't equate significant performance improvements with "minor visual differences".

I'm out of the loop

Is Driveclub getting anything for the Pro upgrade?

I'm thinking of selling my PS4 for 200€ anyway

As far as we know unfortunately not.

It seems like Sony is done with the game after the last free update.

I don't agree with Jeff B judging on his comments last beastcast but people in here need to throw some respect on his name. He didn't see a huge leap, some people will not. There are several reasons to get a pro and good enough reasons to stay put where you are.

No them wrapping the new tracks in was the final update.

Driveclub is dead man.

raw

God fuckin damnit Sony

Don't wanna be critical of CNET opinion, but I'm very surprised these guys didn't see any difference in Infamous with hdr on.

Unlike Uncharted or the Last of Us, where the difference is not readily apparent, that game has huge differences even on original PS4, imo. (And I don't even have Oled TVs.)

Everything else is in the eye of beholder, in my opinion, I sure hope I can spot the differences since I sit quite close to my KS 7000.

The problem with the Cnet review is that he only reviewed 4 old games and 2 visually unimpressive VR games.

Why didn't he review newer games that were developed with PS4 Pro in mind??

they must be using a shitty 4k HDR TV

Really positive reviews overall.
The benefits of the Pro are something that will be more appreciated by core gamers and upgraders of course.
Also just like launch titles do not take truly advantage of a system's capabilities I think that with future titles developers will have more time to implement different modes and to try new techniques.
Right now the standouts seem to be Tomb Raider with a brilliant 2160p checkerboard that DF claims to be indistinguishable from native res, COD:IW with increased resolution and more stable frame rate and the 4K native presentation of Skyrim. Too bad that Uncharted 4 is not 1800p checkerboard.
Looking forward to know the improvements in Dishonored 2, FFXV and TLG.

I think it might be a problem going forward. Some tv's handle HDR differently and need to be adjusted for it. I know I have never calibrated my tv so I am sure it's way off to someone who knows what they are doing. However getting a calibration disc or a professional is probably not something a lot of people will do so it depends on the tv to make the adjustments.

Well he did have a severe family emergency he might not have had as much time as the other sites.

Any word on what the base hard drive is in the Pro? I assume they would at the very least spring for a 7200rpm drive this time around. Debating on sticking with the stock or possibly dropping a spare 500GB SSD in it, though cutting the size of the hard drive by half doesn't sound all that great either.

I'm not saying his review is poor or objectively wrong -- everyone's opinion is valid -- but in terms of technical knowledge and awareness, has Jeff Bakalar ever come off as extremely savvy or discerning?

If he says the difference is hard to see then the difference, to him, is hard to see. That could very well be the experience of thousands of consumers. You can't ignore his viewpoint. Just don't go expecting the depth of a Digital Foundry breakdown.

So let's keep the "clickbait" stuff to a minimum, okay?

I'm mean.... They are reviewing hardware? Would they half ass a MacBook pro review? Or a iPhone 7 review without that in depth take? What about a new TV? Or Bluetooth headphones?

When people are buying new hardware, in depth reviews are kind of the point. But you are right, I guess CNET is not where anyone is going to get that so it's fine to really not take it seriously. Its a passive review.

I find it funny tho that for some it's totally on point for the lack of what's there because of the conclusion we all know and has been echoed months before the reveal of this console but what people are really looking for which is for a good comparison between the OG and Pro in depth, is being unreasonable and not taking the review at face value is ultimately being salty.

If the point was to state, you don't have to need it now... We already knew that.

So MW:R as an example with it being whatever resolution it is how does that benefit me as someone who owns a 1080p TV?

Surely I will only ever see a 1080p image?

Sorry for the noob question.

Reviews will be all over, gaming journalists are no different than other journalists, rarely objective.

The screenshots coming out this weekend will sway me more than some reviewer saying he can't see a difference on his unpatched games, or that the system doesn't have 4k blu ray ( what game requires this anyway? )

People thought I was crazy when I bought the first xbox and im ok with them thinking im crazy buying ps4pro.

This shit just confuses me every time. One second I'm reading its not worth it if I dont have a 4K tv. The next I'm reading it is. Then I'm reading it could be just depends. I'm not enthusiast and lemme tell you, this shit is extremely confusing. I'll just go ahead and stick with what I already have.

Maybe that's why he withheld a score and said he wanted to check more things out?

DriveClub VR is getting an update but it doesn't seem to be rolling back to the main game.

Sounds good. Drive Club OG already looks phenomenal. VR needs work to increase the visual fidelity. Technically, they are two different games on the same engine. It was nice of them roll the VR tracks back to the main game.

Just build a ps4 pro.

Pretty sure it's 5400rpm

I want to know about Dishonored 2.

What will they improve? FPS? Resolution? Both?
This is a another huge issue thus far.

Something like 30 games will have Pro support on launch day and we haven't even heard what will be improved on most and we're only 3 days away. What the hell?

So there are increased framerates in some games after all. Glad to know. I expect next year games to take better advantage of the console when the devs get the grips of the hardware

Like many have said, there are so many games releasing soon and ones that haven't been tested enough to really give us an idea of the upgrade.

Even the Digital Foundry review was fairly tame with barely any comparisons outside of the video review.

I am all in, my PS4 is sold and pre-order paid off, but for those on the fence there is definitely still more to come to help you make the choice.

VR testing is basically MIA and many games still haven't released their patches.

Yeah, I don't know why devs aren't bothered to have a blogpost or video like Hitman (blogpost) or Tomb Raider (video).

Noticeable PSVR improvement as expected, excellent.
Better Pro support once devs get comfortable with checkerboard rendering is a no brainer as well.

Yeah, not many games previewed thus far. This needs to be a rolling review as a lot more patches have dropped/will drop in the next few days.

It is worth if you value supersampled 1080p providing the best possible image quality for fullHD resolution games.
If you don't care about these things or you only notice major generational jumps in graphics then you could stay with what you have.

People expecting reviews to be "100% get it" our "100% pass it" are going to be disappointed.

Is very rare to have a product that fits everyone necessities/wishes.

At this point, review threads mostly serve as confirmation bias, where people handpick 1 or 2 reviews that fit their own views/bias.

Biggest disappointment for me is the intentional handy capping of un-patched games. I knew this ahead of time but locking un-patched games to older specs is still disappointing news. Seems the UI and boot time of the system is the same too which is also disappointing. As a primary PC user having games that had frame rate issues in areas cleaned up with better hardware would be really nice. As would getting into the menu faster to join a party or send a message mid game. Boot times being quicker would be a bonus but not a big of a deal. Little things that Sony could have done to make the Pro even better were ignored for "Compatibility" even though the Xbox One S handled it fine.

Aren't things like boot time and OS speed mostly being bottlenecked by the hard drive?

Their reasoning for downgrading specs to base ps4 with unpatched games is to not run it compatibility issues?

Because it generally really does depend on what you want. You will see significantly better IQ on a 1080p screen. On a 4K TV it will fare better than a 1080p PS4 as the resolutions are much higher, but its a big investment for a TV and a Pro at the same time.

Generally i think it would be worth a purchase for people interested at 1080p

It would be obvious pro would be perceived as a premium product destined for the hardcore gamers and specialy for those with 4k tvs. And if we look at it is such a small market right now..

That's why Sony should have been more ambitious and not trying to reap benefits from both worlds..

Its obvious that for casuals pro will be something completly irrelevant as they will not give a shit for 4k.

The money will be in the hardcore and in this sense Sony should have made a bit more ambitious machine even if a bit more expensive and much more coesive offering faster processing and UHD drive for a complete 4k experience and marketing message.

In this way pro fall short as it dosent offer the full 4k experience or offer eneough benefits for the hardcore with 1080p displays to make them feel its worth to upgrade and for sure it does nothing for the casuals that won't even be able to tell the diference between pro and standard ps4.

It seems to me a missed oportunyty from Sony...

Similarly, those of you who have PS VR hooked up to your PS4 Pro might notice Area X looking a little different than you’re used to—that’s because the image being passed along to each of your eyes is being rendered at a higher resolution (1920 x 1080, instead of 1440 x 810 on a standard PS4), before being passed to the PS VR headset. Even though the final resolution it’s displayed at on the headset in the same either way, the extra rendering from the PS4 Pro makes a difference: each particle looks a little more clear, a little more solid, adding up to objects and enemies that look more distinct and “real,” whether close-up or at a distance.

So it seems like the system provides a pretty noticeable bump for the developers that choose to take advantage of it, but because no one knows how much developers are actually going to take advantage of it the smart choice might be to wait.

I'm much more willing to gamble on this than PSVR, but the risk is still there. Keeping my preorder.

Lol man, XB1S minor upgrade isn't comparable to PS4 Pro's upgrade. Sony, or better say Cerny, has a very good reason to go with this decision.

CNet, the website that gave the iphone 7 the same review score as the iphone 6?

Removing features, same screen, minor differences in hardware..........

..............

Yeah. I'll get my tech info from Digital Foundry thanks very much.
