PlayStation active players base has significantly grown over Xbox in the past two years, according to Ampere. End of 2024: PS +10M from Xbox in the US

Microsoft just simply made several mistakes over the years that proved too detrimental.

I've long maintained the 2013 XB1 reveal caused severe, lasting damage to their brand.

But Sony bereft of any competition is not a good thing, imo.

PS was selling more units than Xbox, so Xbox shifted the conversation from "console sales" to "active players."

Now PS has beaten Xbox in that metric as well lol.

I wonder if Xbox will change the metric once again.

Things started to shift as early as 2009 when Uncharted 2 was released, 2010 saw God of War 3 and by 2013 The Last of Us released and Microsoft had no answer.

The reveal hurt Microsoft but the price of the X1 and the lack of flagship games were the bigger problems.

I think Sony hasn't had any real competition since then and I think what we'll see is them venture out beyond the base console in hopes to get more TAM. What that means for PlayStation console owners, I'm not totally sure. You could make a lot of arguments either way, but my guess is Sony is about to have their Apple moment.

Is this worldwide or US only. Difference seems small compared to units sold.

It's US. Sony has done a big job of reversing the trends in the US where Microsoft actually had an advantage from the 360 days.

The days of Microsoft being seen as a competitor to Sony are numbered. If anything they'll be partners similar to Sega with Nintendo and even Sony. ABK will take over Xbox and Zenimax and Sony historically had a strong relationship with ABK.

Microsoft will just become another 3rd party publisher with their own PC launcher and subscription service.

I see three main mistakes Microsoft made:

- Putting Phil in charge
- Not firing him
- Promoting him head of everything gaming related

The transfer of users between platforms is real, this year and especially next year with GTAVI will make this difference much greater in favor of PS5.

If that's just US, it's quite telling.

That's why it was always funny seeing all those clowns here on Gaf claim that Xbox users would collectively move to PC.

Console gamers mostly stay on consoles and will just move over to Playstation.

Next metric will be Customer Satisfaction and judging by their fan feedback it will be 💯

No need. They will just add them once the players sign in to play Microsoft published games. 🧠🧠🧠

If it weren't for Phil they would have shut down Xbox years ago.

The options were this or a shutdown. You can see that Phil has also thought about shutting it down. And now that GP has failed that day is drawing near.

There will be no traditional console replacement for the XSX and if there is any hardware at all the premium on it will be gigantic.

I mean keeping someone in a coma alive so he can be a donor isn't really doing the guy any favour

We need a new competitor , leaving Sony alone to do whatever they want is not healthy for the consumer

Did anyone here even bother to read the article? Based on the comments here I'm guessing not. The whole discussion was about Game Pass's influence and they talk about how, even with a much lower active player base, last November 47% of the Call of Duty player base was on Xbox consoles. A 12% increase year over year and even more impressive considering how much smaller the Xbox console install base is compared to Playstation. I feel like neogaf is starting to feel like Reddit, cherry picking random statements from a podcast without any context.

To, "number of people walking by Xbox aisle compared to PS or Nintendo." XD

It's happening with smaller games and on a smaller scale too. After The Show left gp and last gen, xbone players had a choice to make and I'd bet most picked ps5. They got hooked into packs and had to upgrade. A hundred thousand here and there adds up.

What's surprising is that it's only a +10m gap... it's a far superior product and ecosystem in many ways.

I'm surprised the gap isn't much larger.

Yes, the next metric is people who play their games no matter where, like any other 3rd party.

That's one way to spin it. A bunch of people inadvertently paying for the franchise and clicking download vs actual sales for a franchise and still not gaining a majority in your strongest region. 3% over 2022 when it wasn't on gamepass is not that great and it was declining on xbox until the gamepass addition. As the playerbase on PS increases further it would become difficult to show a jump since they no longer have gamepass users clicking it to rely on for any significant YoY increases.

With XBox dead, Sony's consoles are the only way for people who don't want to deal with PC gaming's issues to play all of the third party AAA games.

Sonys first party output has sucked this generation, but it kind of doesn't matter since there's so many other games available and people need a way to play those.

The fact that DS2, Saros, Ghost2 and GTA6 are coming to PS5 and not PC any time soon is just icing on the cake.

Those are not direct competitions , nintendo is aimed for different audience and PC is expensive not anyone can effort a gaming PC
Yeah, that means there's healthy competition.

All three platforms have 3rd party support and each offers something for a different demographic.
They also innovate in their own ways.

When he says "from Xbox," what does he mean? "6% from Xbox. 10% from Xbox." Is he saying the players are coming "from Xbox" over to Playstation? If so, how would he know that? Or is it just his inference based on Xbox sales trailing off and PS sales doing better?

This stupid shit again?
Sony has plenty of competition. Xbox was competing with playstation, they just did an incredibly shitty job of it.

They aren't as similar as you think either. Xbox became about gamepass. Playstation still offers console, timed and full exclusivity plus a handheld and VR accessory and their own sub service. They also have a mid gen Pro console that's an actual upgrade vs launching theirs alongside a base model. There won't be anyone who can offer that ecosystem in the near future and PlayStations will only get better and more advanced. The last shot xbox had at being a real competitor died when they weren't able to make CoD exclusive and we're seeing their white flag pivot with Forza, gears and eventually halo being ported to playstation

My guess would be the difference now in comparison to the difference last-gen in the same timeframe?

Unless it's just the gap between PS and Xbox this gen.

MS was never competition, just a bully with a lot of money who put out a bunch of rejected products.

Percentages work exactly the opposite way, it's less impressive if the userbase is smaller
What? Maybe you don't understand what I said but Im talking about the call of duty player base, which has nothing to do with the consoles's userbase. In 2023 35% of all Call of Duty players were playing on an xbox console in November, according to this report, and in 2024, it went up to 47%. That's the 12% increase I'm referring to and this number has nothing to do with how big the Xbox or PS5 user base is.

Call of Duty is one of, if not the most popular game in the US. Sony has 10 million more active players than Xbox(console) in the US, according to this report, yet Call of Duty Black Ops 6,one of the most popular games in the US, was still played more on Xbox consoles than Playstation in November. How can anyone view this as a negative for Microsoft? This really showcases how impactful buying Activision and bringing their games to Game Pass was and this was the actual topic of conversation.

Spin? I'm literally just repeating what is written in the article. Hard to say if they didn't get a majority because Call of Duty is also available through gamepass on PC and this report doesn't seem to have those numbers.
