PlayStation has also announced that Zero Dawn has sold over 20 million copies

Please Taybot stop doing this, I beg.

Mario Kart 8 and Animal Crossing have sold 80m copies between them, that's 20m more than Horizon, GoW and Spider-Man combined.

Games that Nintendo shit out in half an hour on a budget of £60 and a packet of bubblegum, like Mario Party, sell 18m copies.

If you compare the top selling 20 Sony made games on the PS4/5 the Switch has probably shifted 100m more units and that's a conservative estimate.

Anyway, good figures for Guerrilla, I'm glad to see the defensive brigade so happy in here.
Loving those new IP's from Nintendo. What's Pokemon? Need to check that out.

Impressive numbers for a new IP from a studio that pretty much was just doing FPSs before.

Now do the same Ghost of Tsushima.

See how he included PC?

We getting a lot more Sony releases on PC! And I expect that gap from PS4 release to PC release to shorten dramatically. Too much money to be left on the table. Probably not day one releases (at least in the short term), but maybe a year gap? That sounds fair.

Well, the game was 9.99 $ the GOTY. And part of the ps4 mega bundle... Its normal that it have this number of copies... And The costumers of Steam...
It's still impressive though. But I do agree that it's not on the same level as Nintendo games. Nintendo games regularly sell 20m+ and at full price! HZD was $37 two months after launch and was down to $20 not much longer after.

Exactly. Impressive is Nintendo that always despite the time, its I. P. S sell millions but at a price of 40 to 60$. It is not the same to boast the amount of millions, if it is at a relatively low price..

This bragging about the millions is just a form of cheap propaganda for Horizon forbidden west on ps5.

A game is sold at full price, it speaks of the quality of it.

It is sold if commitment and quality are shown. Like Nintendo does honestly.

These are their top-selling IP according to them and it is mostly the older IPs that are pulling those numbers. Sony isn't getting enough credit here as some of their IP is hitting those numbers too. GOW 19+ million, Uncharted 4 20+ million, Horizon 20+ million, Spiderman* 20+ million, etc.

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 43.35 million pcs.
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons - 37.62 million pcs.
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 27.40 million pcs.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 25.80 million pcs.
  • Pokémon Sword/Pokémon Shield - 23.90 million pcs.
  • Super Mario Odyssey - 23.02 million pcs.
  • Super Mario Party - 17.39 million pcs.
  • Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu!/Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee! - 14.33 million pcs.
  • Pokémon Brilliant Diamond / Pokémon Shining Pearl - 13.97 million pcs.
  • Ring Fit Adventure - 13.53 million pcs.

Getting anywhere close to the likes of smash bros and pokemon is insane. All that growth during one generation too. Nintendo also have seen amazing growth. Zelda used to top out at 7m-8m before the switch. Nintendo and Sony have captured an entire new generation of people with the ps4 and Switch.

And? It's not all videogames that sell at 9,99 get to see the 20M mark. Specially considering most of these sales happened when the game wasn't at that price.

You're also not taking into consideration the number of people that played it and never bought it since it's on PSNow, it was given for free in numerous PlayStation initiatives, it's on PS Plus Collection as well, etc...

The Nintendo brand sells millions of its i. P.S but at the starting price and even if it doesn't reach 20 million, but it maintains its profits well... It also considers that its games are exclusive. They have never been released on PC or any other service.

You know… US doesn't mean anything too… it is only 30% of PS4 userbase.

PC sales on Steam are at max 2 million… everything else are PS4 or EGS… do you really want to believe EGS sold more than Steam? Crazy.

US doesn't mean anything LOL... okay...

Who said anything about Steam?

Have you been drinking?

But people said it stopped around 10 million because Sony hadn't said nothing since then. How ignorant can you be. The same thing applies for TLOU2. When Sony provides another update on that the same people are going to be eating a lot of crow.

Nintendo hasn't made a new IP that has sold 20M
When?
  • Super Mario Bros sold 40m units on the NES.
  • Duck Hunt sold 28m units on the NES.
  • Wii Fit, Wii Sports Resort and Wii Play all sold between 22m and 30m units.
  • Nintendogs sold 24m units.
  • Brain Training 19m units.
  • Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow 46m units.
Plenty of original Nintendo IP has sold well over 20m units.

Nintendo also don't lower the price of their first party games to £10 on Steam and £7 on console.

Next up in the 20 million club: TLOU2 and Ghost of Tsushima

Though Miles Morales might make it first
tlou2 will not get 20mil. People are to ass stubborn to see past the highly vocal bad opinions about the game.
And they are not willing for the game to take their emotions for a ride.
I think it's a fantastic game

What is the point of brining this up when the game came out years earlier? It's like a dick measuring contest.
Sales are fun to discuss?
Wonder how many pc copies maybe ~5million
Probably going to see lots of ps exclusives come to pc 4 years down the line from now on ,

I think a lot of the growth is the nature of digital, impulse buys, buy a digital copy over used, super sales etc

It was heavily bundled during 2 holiday seasons so that helps, but I don't think takes away from the success as you don't bundle games people don't want

Great news! So as I remember things are:
  • The Last of Us (PS3+PS4): >20M (2019)
  • Marvel's Spider-Man: >20M (Nov 2020)
  • God of War: >20M (was 19.5M in Octt 2021 plus sold over 1M in PC until)
  • Uncharted 4: ~17M (Oct 2019, must be over 20M now or will reach the with the remasters)
  • Horizon: 20+ (Feb 2021)
  • Gran Turismo Sport: 15M+ (Dec. 2021)
We'll have to follow Morales, TLOU2, GoT, Horizon 2, GT7 and GoW Ragnarok since all them have potential to sell over 15 or even 20M copies. Who knows if some other more like Days Gone will reach the 15M mark. This generation Sony's blockbustters have been more successful than ever, and I'd say they had more >15M sellers than in any previous generation.

I'd be curious to know Uncharted Nathan Drake's Collection because I'd bett it's at least at 10M+ too.

Nintendo regularly sells 20+ million, but at basically full price. It's a different beast.
Not that regularly, has 6 Switch games that sold over 20M and another one more that sold over 15M. Pretty much the same than Sony on PS4, but Sony probably has TLOU2 and Morales on that 15M league if not now pretty soon. This isn't counting 3rd party games, which PS must have several of them in these over 15M league while Switch has zero.

Sony pretty likely will end having more 15M+ sellers and probably 20M+ sellers too but less (if we don't count 3rd party games) 25M+ sellers. But it's true than at different pricing: more expensive than Nintendo at launch and cheaper when discounted.

tlou2 will not get 20mil. People are to ass stubborn to see past the highly vocal bad opinions about the game.
And they are not willing for the game to take their emotions for a ride.
I think it's a fantastic game
Ccmparing the TLOU2 numbers we have to more or less comparable ones of the other Sony exclusives, TLOU2 is on track to reach 20M and maybe even become the best selling PS4 exclusive.

When will naughty dog give us an update on TLOU2? I Kept saying it will be higher than many expect. Nobody expected horizon or god of war to be above 20m before they were updated. Most of us thought around 15m.

You know for a fact they are not referring to the NES when they state "new" IP.

Maybe the Switch?

I don't know shit. So we're arbitrarily saying that Sony's first party sales now match Nintendo's pulling power because Sony have managed to sell 1 new IP to the tune of 20m in the last generation. Ok, cool I suppose.

What about those 3rd parties sales on Nintendo?
Because you know playstation has more than 1st party.

I can't keep up with the logic sorry? We're talking about Sony and Nintendo's first party. That's what the conversation has been from the start, Swift_Star Swift_Star saying that Sony's first party sales are equal to Nintendo's. You want to talk about third party? Knock yourself out.

Ghost of Tsushima reached 8 million last month and we know TLOU2 must be above that, pretty likely above 10M now. I think they may provide an update witth the more than likely PS5/PC versions that may be blundled on a Director's Cut with the remake or in some press release related to the release of the tv series.

Man that is some crazy level of spin lol

The logic is 3rd party will cannibalise first parties sells and vice versa. Making these numbers mighty impressive.
Nintendo fist party has no competition on the Switch.

huh? oh noooo, I was told that if they stop telling us numbers, it means da game flopped doe. /s

This and God Of War should be proof enough that Sony doesn't actually always tell us sales yearly of each game or something, many times they won't say anything and years later when its relevant they will.

PC version comes out, here is some sales data
Sequel is coming out....here is some sales data lol

When Ghost Of Tsushima comes to PC we'll get that update, when The Last Of Us 2 Directors Cut Remaster Remix Tears Edition comes to PS5 and PC, we'll get that sales update. I guess they want to use that marketing push on a random day to have all the media cycle to themselves. Well.....its working, we are all talking about HZD lol I was just thinking about playing it for a 3rd time and maybe that was the point of all this, to get us thinking about the series, sequel etc.

Are you saying that there's no third party games on the Switch, or that Nintendo's games are that good that people would rather buy them instead of the third parties?

The Switch has Overwatch, Paladins, Apex Legends & Fortnite but Splatoon 3 will still sell over 12m copies.

The Switch has Rocket League, Grid, Team Sonic Racing and Crash Team Racing but MK8 continues to dwarf them.

There's platformers like Crash, Spyro, A Hat in Time & Yooka Laylee but Mario will still outsell them.

In this case in Sony's side we should include Astro's Playroom with 17.3M (and counting) on the PS5.

The sequel is set to drop soon, this is more or less marketing for the series.
To an extent, yes it's boastful and celebratory, but it's also a way to get more people to check out the series that haven't before.

"Hey look at how many people played this game. See what all the buzz is about and give it a try and maybe the new sequel as well'

Or maybe is just their first game to hit that milestone which on its own is a reason to celebrate

Im OBVIOUSLY talking about recently so that is hilarious u brought up games from 40, 30, 20 yrs ago

Crazy numbers for a new ip

And the next horizon game has the potential to surpass this number due to better brand recognition

Crazy. At the start of the PS4 gen no one would have ever believed Sony would have consecutive 20+ million sellers with their FP

But of course we're talking about Nintendo
And sony comes up in every Nintendo threads almost as if thats what fan boys do, and in this case it was a sony sider that brought up Nintendo

Is it just me, or does this board keep getting more and more obsessed with numbers, especially as far as sales and players are concerned?

Right now on the first page alone we have:

  • PlayStation has also announced that Zero Dawn has sold over 20 million copies
  • NPD January 22 Results - PS #1 Units and Revenue
  • God of War hit's 2M+ sales on STEAM... according to SteamSpy
  • The Last of Us: Part II now has over 320 Game of the Year awards
  • Lost Ark is doing crazy numbers.
  • Grounded hit 10m player mark
  • Nintendo Switch is the fastest selling home console to reach 100 million mark
  • More than 60,000 Battlefield 2042 Players Have Petitioned For Their Money Back

Maybe it's time for a separate board for this stuff.

It's not an obsession but a healthy interest in an aspect that directly impacts the future prospects of a gaming IP you enjoy.

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand that if a game you enjoyed sells well, the likelihood of a sequel is very high.

If you're invested as a gamer in a particular game's gameplay, story or lore, then you want to play more games in that same setting and series. That's perfectly logical.

Therefore, this idea that "real gamers shouldn't care about sales", is silly and divorced from the realities of the business side of gaming and its impact on the green-light potential of the games we love.

On topic: Well deserved, great game.
