PlayStation has also announced that Zero Dawn has sold over 20 million copies

Is it just me, or does this board keep getting more and more obsessed with numbers, especially as far as sales and players are concerned?

Right now on the first page alone we have:

  • PlayStation has also announced that Zero Dawn has sold over 20 million copies
  • NPD January 22 Results - PS #1 Units and Revenue
  • God of War hit's 2M+ sales on STEAM... according to SteamSpy
  • The Last of Us: Part II now has over 320 Game of the Year awards
  • Lost Ark is doing crazy numbers.
  • Grounded hit 10m player mark
  • Nintendo Switch is the fastest selling home console to reach 100 million mark
  • More than 60,000 Battlefield 2042 Players Have Petitioned For Their Money Back

Maybe it's time for a separate board for this stuff.
How dare you forget sifu with its 500k sales

Ehm ... This game was in the "stay at home" thing. So ... The number is not really "impressive" it just says nothing.
Bought it on gog and than got it through the "stay at home" campaign.

Where have you been the last 20 years?

It's not an obsession but a healthy interest in an aspect that directly impacts the future prospects of a gaming IP you enjoy.

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand that if a game you enjoyed sells well, the likelihood of a sequel is very high.

If you're invested as a gamer in a particular game's gameplay, story or lore, then you want to play more games in that same setting and series. That's perfectly logical.

Therefore, this idea that "real gamers shouldn't care about sales", is silly and divorced from the realities of the business side of gaming and its impact on the green-light potential of the games we love.
There's having an interest in sales and player numbers and then there's creating a new thread on a gaming board every time some game or platform hits a milestone. I mean, some people don't even wait for that anymore. We had two separate threads for Steam concurrent user records recently, and both of them were for completely arbitrary numbers. To be honest, I think most of these posts are either people hoping to justify their purchases and platform choices and/or thinly veiled attempts at console/platform warring.

In this case in Sony's side we should include Astro's Playroom with 17.3M (and counting) on the PS5.
That's nothing.
"The Playroom" for PS4 sold 117 million units.

I count for 2 copies of Horizon, but I had a gun to my head. So I dont know if it counts. Also on sale for 43$.

You can't have a sales thread without it turning into Sony vs Nintendo console warring. A new IP that used to be on a single platform for the majority of it's life, selling 20 million units is very impressive, no matter how you look at it.

Please Taybot stop doing this, I beg.

Mario Kart 8 and Animal Crossing have sold 80m copies between them, that's 20m more than Horizon, GoW and Spider-Man combined.

Games that Nintendo shit out in half an hour on a budget of £60 and a packet of bubblegum, like Mario Party, sell 18m copies.

If you compare the top selling 20 Sony made games on the PS4/5 the Switch has probably shifted 100m more units and that's a conservative estimate.

Anyway, good figures for Guerrilla, I'm glad to see the defensive brigade so happy in here.
This honestly makes Horizon's sales more impressive not less. New IP from the developers of Killzone which everyone loved to shit on is doing mainline 3D mario numbers. Sony first party has come a long long way.

Next up in the 20 million club: TLOU2 and Ghost of Tsushima

Though Miles Morales might make it first
TLOU2?

As for Horizon, that's massive. Well deserved, too. I need to get back to playing it. It's a really good game, but had so many games on my backlog I need to finish.

Its extremely impressive for a non Nintendo console.

Unlike Nintendo where mostly their games sell the most with the exception of the few 3rd party titles , Sony is competing with the plethora of the flagship 3rd party titles. Its more impressive when a game hits 20 million on Playstation due to the tough competition.

It's impressive that it SOLD (keyword here) 20 million copies while also being given away for free and offered on multiple services like PSNow, PS+ Collection, etc.

I think you're being way too cynical.

I understood the general principle to be new threads for new news. It's no different to multiple people making multiple threads each subjecting a separate sound bite from the same Phil Spencer interview.

At least sales discussion can be interesting. It's infinitely more so than discussing the next BS that comes out of the mouths of gaming exec talking heads.

Crazy. At the start of the PS4 gen no one would have ever believed Sony would have consecutive 20+ million sellers with their FP

But of course we're talking about Nintendo
Yes I think people are downplaying the growth. Prior to the ps4 generation only gran turismo was getting above 10 million and that peaked at around 15 million with GT3

This is the weirdest thread I've every read. We have Nintendo fans proud of the fact they bought games full price for some reason and Sony fans complaining about Nintendo's successful IP not being new enough. The key word is successful, not new.

Again none of them new IPs.
Hey, I said it's impressive but not on the same level as Nintendo. Still impressive though. I'm giving credit, but just not as impressive as Nintendo. Still impressive though.

Hzd did need two platforms to get to 20m though. None of Nintendo's titles did.

It's called supporting the people that make the games you love to play. Being proud of waiting for sales or, worse, buying used is what's weird.

Now excuse me while I go gladly pre-order the 80 dollar deluxe edition of Horizon Forbidden West.

Full price at the start is fine, people being proud of games retaining their prices years later is jaw dropping. Having a game like 1-2 Switch being the same price as 2017 is fucking mental. I'd rather the price go down so I can buy more games. I don't know any consumer who actively wants the price to remain. The only time this should happen is if you bought a house because you want it to keep its value years later.

Sony fans slating Nintendo fans for the prices when Sony are trying to implement Nintendo pricing this gen is mind boggling. Check the mirror lads.

So true, man. I regret not buying the Returnal Deluxe edition to support those guys for making one of the best games I've ever played in my entire life. Those 79 euros were the best money I spent for years on a game.

Support your developers, people. Specially if they're making left field and risky games that dare to bring something new.

Why does the value of a new game drop because of time? Nintendo makes some of the best games ever made, on a regular cadence. Who else can claim that?

if a UHD of The Godfather is released, should it be cheap because the movie was made in the 70s? it's still one of the greatest movies ever made. Why should the value decrease?

I think with the advent of digital, holding prices makes more sense. The reason games would drop in price in the past was to clear out inventory for shelving space. Since that's just not needed, why should games drop in price? They cost what they cost. Period.

I expect people to pay me for my work. How could I not have that same standard for others? Support the developers and pay to play IMO.

tlou2 will not get 20mil. People are to ass stubborn to see past the highly vocal bad opinions about the game.
And they are not willing for the game to take their emotions for a ride.
I think it's a fantastic game

TLOU2?

Why does it need luck? Sold 4 million in 3 days, fastest selling Sony exclusive of all time, and didn't stop selling there. There's a world outside the tiny TLOU2 hate bubble

Stockholm syndrome is alive and well.

Wonderful game and very much anticipating the sequel. 20 million also after being on ps now, and the ps5 free games list. Great numbers.

Amazing numbers for Zero Dawn. I was one of those who never checked out H:ZD until it was given away for free with the Play-At-Home initiative. But I loved it so much, I wound up getting 100% trophies in a month and I pre-ordered Forbidden West. So it was a smart freebie in hindsight.

I originally guessed Forbidden West would sell 15+ million copies lifetime, but that looks like a pretty laughable figure given this announcement.

Impressive and its a new IP. Cant wait for the sequels. Id think Ghost of Tsushima will sell close to that by the time their sequel comes.

Playstation now has multiple titles that sell big numbers with great reviews. Some title over 20 million, God of War, Spiderman, Uncharted, TLOU, Horizon, Some close to 10million like Ghost of Tsushima.

Also shows how Nintendo has hit gold with Switch. So many ports sell huge amounts Which is basically pure profit after coming out on the Wii U.
Some of the big games cost a fraction of Horizon to make and have been selling for £50 with barely any discounts. Like Animal Crossing has sold close to 40 million

Nintendo definitely shows you can keep selling games at full price

Problem for Sony and MS is they are in a different environment to Nintendo where third parties are dominant and price competition is high. So sales are a necessity

Nintendo consoles are almost entirely about Nintendo games. Third party is a much lesser factor

It's nothing now, but if we count the games bundled with the consoles as they do it with the Nintendo games, then at tthe end of the generation Astro would have sold way over 100 million units.

Yes. For tthat same reason the price are even lower in Steam, since in PC there are even way more 3rd party competition. And well, in mobile even more.

Its extremely impressive for a non Nintendo console.
For a Nintendo console too, only half a dozen games sold over 20M copies on Switch, and this is including 3rd parties.

All the PlayStation 20 million sellers were heavily bundled, so you're counting them, every one was part of a holiday bundle or 2 or i think 3 in horizons case
Astros playroom is comparable to some like the 3ds plaza. No one counts that as a game that has sold 75 million copies,
And the playroom does that even still come pre-installed anymore?, not to mention it requires the camera

Difference with Nintendo titles that do it is they're only one on console. With HZD it got to 20m AFTER it released on PC. It was probably close on PS4 alone, but it needed PC to get over that line.

If Nintendo started putting games on PC 30m would be the new benchmark for them.

Nice ad hominem, lol. Best selling game ever, apparently, yet no sales updates since launch. Hmm.

... I dont think you know what ad hominem is

You're in a thread where people are laughing about how everyone assumed Horizon stalled at 10 million because they didn't give an update since 2019 and you're making this fallacy again

Sony give sales updates whenever they feel like it. Usually when they have another game coming up

The industry has grown so much. I remember the time when 8 million copies was the absolute top of the mountain.

New order at Sony studios is real.

Uncharted who? The state of ND is similar to Manchester United. some people still think it's the biggest club in England, but they struggle to reach the top 4.

It was WAAAAAAAAY worse 15 years ago when we would get real numbers from everybody. Those were the good 'ol days.

It actually is pretty remarkable that Nintendo basically ignores the market trends of Sony/MS/PC and just never discounts their games. Obviously 20M is a huge number of copies to sell. I should finish HZD some day.
