PlayStation Network Thread (Vita/PS3/PS4) | June 2014

Since I've finished Mind Zero last night and I'm waiting for Rorona Plus tomorrow, I decided to give Ragnarok Odyssey Ace a try since I've bought it at launch but never played it.

Top of the page: Buy Demon Gaze and Danganronpa!

I need a sale on the Sly trilogy and on GOW 2 for PS3, which, if I'm not mistaken, should unlock the collection for both consoles if you already own GOW1.

GAF, help me use my money wisely!

I bought my Vita last week. A lovely Vita 1000 with dat sexy OLED screen, packed with Uncharted and Soul Sacrifice. That, and 3 months of PS+ (just to try the service). I'm getting a 16 GB memory card from Amazon tomorrow to replace the measly 4 GB card that came packed with the bundle. So far, I've got:

  • Uncharted: Golden Abyss
  • Soul Sacrifice
  • Sly 4 (PS+)
  • Dragon's Crown (PS+)
  • Surge Deluxe (PS+)
  • Pixel Junk Shooter Ultimate (PS+)

To celebrate my birthday, I decided to get myself a €20 PSN card to treat myself with a game or two. This is the first time that I buy anything on the PlayStation Store, so I would like to maximize my purchase. I have some questions:

  1. The PS+ IGC titles for July are going to be announced this week, right? Should I wait until they are announced before buying anything? Or am I on the safe(r) side, having so very few games?
  2. What are the chances of PSP games being part of the IGC? There are a few I'd like to get (Monster Hunter looks tempting), but I wouldn't like to shoot myself in the foot by buying a game that will end up being "free".
  3. I really wanted to get P4 Golden... but, sadly, while I was setting up my PS account, credit card info and all that, I missed the E3 sale last week. How often does P4G go on sale?
  4. What about the other Persona games? I never managed to finish P3P, and I would really like to get it on PSV, but €30 is pretty steep for a PSP game...
  5. How often does the PSN have sales? I'm used to having some sort of perma-sale state on Steam...

Sorry if my questions are too basic (and dumb)!

If you choose games that have already been on Plus, you won't run into an issue of buying something that goes free (only game to hit Plus twice free that I know of is Soul Sacrifice).

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (PSP) was already on Plus for North America, not sure about EU. We get PSP games but they're random and not too often.

P4G doesn't go on sale too often in EU that I know of, P3P either. When they do though, they're cheap.

PSN has sales pretty much weekly, with flash sales lasting short periods here and there as well. We usually get at least one big sale a month, and there's almost always stuff for holidays.

Shahid following @yosp's agenda:

Sony's Shahid Ahmad: Indie games do sell consoles

I really appreciate Shahid's work and even defend him every now and then, but some times I wish he would just stay quiet.

.....Shahid, I love my Vita, but I didn't not get one ONLY for indie games, I got it for a verity of different types of games!

I get that with the PS1 and PSP backlog (which I more or less never even experenced) and the different types of games I never even thought about touching in the past (like Persona 4 Golden, Persona 3 Portable and Ys Vita)....but I also got my Vita to play Sony Vita games :l.

I mean, if Sony were to drop support today....I would be fine, as I am pleased with the games Sony did make for the Vita; Tearaway is one of the best games I ever played, Gravity Rush was great fun, Killzone looked amazing on Vita, and Sly 4 felt great to play on Vita.

I got my Vita due to a great interest in the system and PlayStation Plus, so I am happy with it. But, people got the system on the 'promise' Sony made to them that BIG games would come to the platform....that stopped sadly :(. I don't mind, but a good number of people DO mind that, so they are pissed with their Vita purchase sadly :l.

...Either way, we know the story by know; Sony gives two shits about the Vita while everyone else loves the Vita. Lets leave it at that and stop caring about what happens in the systems future; its ensured we will still get tons of killer games from company's like Namco-Bandi, Altus and many other JP Publishers/Developers along with many interesting Indie games :D.

There's a comment on the blog that echoes the same.

Has the Summer Sale ever been split? Could there be more later? Kind of a disappointing sale right now. :L

My thoughts exactly. I was expecting more from this! Don't you want my $$$ Sony?? Who knows though, they may have some pretty sweet sales without the PS+ discount.

My brother plans on getting a Vita for portable Spelunky, Terraria and Minecraft. That last one is much less indie than the others at this point, but it still counts.

Still a minority, but it's not too rare.

I love the whole indie vs AAA debate, especially since for the most part everyone has their own definition of indie and AAA.

I posted a question on Twitter a while ago to settle a bet with a friend that "AAA" is subjective, and got crazy responses from all ends of the spectrum; everything from Hotline Miami is AAA to Infamous is indie - and people backing both sides (not just a single person).

As for me - AAA, indie, whatever... I play good games.

I don't care how you define them, cause it's obvious that as a whole you guys have no idea what you're talking about regarding the definition anyways. ;)

As for the ones who can accurately define "AAA" and "indie" (the very few of you), you're wise enough to know that the classification means nothing with regards to enjoyment of the game - and so we're back to a bunch of people who don't really know what indie or AAA means arguing about them.

Isn't it lovely, kids? :P

OK. So tomorrow's PSN sale will include Dynasty warriors 8 xl vita and deception 4 vita. D4 vita is locked. I will get it. THe question is DW8XL. I already have ps4 version but want to double dip.

How bad is the game, though? I heard JP version got patched and now it plays a lot smoother. Hell they even have high quality voice patch too. (Fuck you sony for not making 8GB cart size)

Any suggestions?

Buy Demon Gaze and Danganronpa!

Waiting for sale. Danganronpa 1+2 for $40 would be ideal.

I feel like Sony talks too much about how the Vtia has lots of indies, and not enough about how it also has a wealthy catalog of Japanese games.

I guess it's not mainstream enough to talk about Japanese games in the West (and how sad is that, really, but that's another discussion), but I feel like a significant portion of Vita owners have bought a Vita for Japanese games, not indies, and not even AAA games. Sony needs to talk about that more. It should be considered as a genuine selling point of the system!

Seriously, these days you have Xseed and Aksys pretty much throwing at least half (if not more) of their localization efforts to the Vita and being fairly successful at it, and yet Sony barely acknowledges them.

I think there are still lots of people out there who are very much into Japanese games in general, but are still under the impression that the Vita has only a bunch of indie games, so they won't bother looking at it.

What's everyone's favourite co-op games on Vita? Going on holiday with a friend and we both own a Vita and want to play through some games together.

So far I have:
Dead Nation
Earth Defence Force
Unit 13 (I think it has co-op?)

Any others?

Thanks for the replies! I guess my best bet is to wait a few days until the PS+ games for Europe are announced, and then try to get something that has already been offered as a IGC game.

I'll try to hunt down a used copy of P4G. I've only seen it new for €40. Considering it was €17 a few days ago, I'm not too excited about that price. I'll hold on to get P3P, though. Hopefully it goes on sale sometime soon.

Guacamelee, Spelunky, Soul Sacrifice, Toukiden, Dragon's Crown, from the top of my head.

THIS. I've heard "indie" thrown around so much that it's meaning has been lost... As has AAA. Thank you for bringing this up.

Games are games (except when they're not). Enjoy them or don't.

Man, Velocity 2X is looking mighty fine (you should not be shocked)

Entering submission next week so should be out pretty soon :) Can't wait

I can't believe it, it seems like it was yesterday that they announced that game. I hope it has a platinum trophy like the first game.

Littlebigplanet, Soul Sacrifice Delta, Ragnarok Odyssey (and ACE), Dungeon Hunter: Alliance, Borderlands 2, Army Corps of Hell, FIFA 13, PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale, SFXT...

Oh, and Unit 13 does have co-op.

I have to agree with you; many indie games on Vita (Guacamelee, Fez, Hotline Miami, SteamWorld Dig, ect) I have played have given me just as much joy as I have playing the bigger games I played on Vita (Persona 4 Golden, Sonic Racing, Gravity Rush, ect).

That is the beauty of the Vita; all of the many indie games on the platform for some reason feel 'perfect' on it. Whenever it is the OLED screen, suspend/resume feature or just how great the Vita itself feels, these games find the perfect home on the platform one way or the other :D.

I tend to differentiate the two by budgets backing them. Triple AAA tend to have massive budgets relative to those of indies, indie teams are generally smaller ect, ect.

It doesn't always mean this...I'm looking at you Oddworld :/

btw I agree. I'm hyped for this since the (leaked) announcement, and along with Hotline Miami 2 and Axiom Verge it's my most anticipated Vita game.(as long as GR is not confirmed for Vita)

I did say "hopefully!" :P. Yeah it's not always the case. Last time it took them a month to get through the submission process, so hopefully it's around a month again.

*epic brofist*
Vita was "Spelunky machine" for several months after buying it. And it was glorious.

Goddamn. Velocity Ultra was not particularly good looking yet it was addicting as crack, but this one actually looks like poetry... want it in my veins.

Fellow PS4 owners, quick technical question:

I know that PS4 retail games are always installed to storage, but is it installed to a cache that is automatically managed by the OS, or does it appear like a plain app that remains on the main screen that you have to manually delete to reclaim space?

I have yet to buy a retail game at this time (nothing interests me so far) and I was wondering how it's managed. I haven't decided whether I'll do full digital or not. If retail games aren't handled by a transparent cache then I won't bother with retail and just buy everything digital.

DLC, mostly. Other than that, you can play it just as an american game.

I don't believe J-Stars has any DLC.

I'd hold off until July 7th before importing that game. While it's super unlikely, Bandai Namco did buy the western domain to "Awakened Legends Vs.", which some assume is a western name for the game. Japan Expo, which is likely one of the final destinations where Bandai Namco could announce the game, runs through July 2nd-6th.

I doubt the game is coming over, but waiting two weeks won't hurt.

hnnnnggggg I just hope this doesn't destroy my sticks. Velocity Ultra already wore them down quite a bit.

God damn if J-Stars Vs comes over that'd be insane. I wonder how much copyright dodging they'd even have to do to bring that over here. Hell, there was even a rumor that JUMP want to make an anime based off the game, which is even more copyright hell.

Another thing about J-Stars DLC is that I'm pretty sure before the game released Bamco said "we're not planning on releasing any DLC" or something like that. They say that, but people found data for Jotaro and DIO from Jojo Part 3, Dai from Dragon Quest Dai, and someone from Shaman King on the J-Stars ISO.

I want Bamco's secret game to be God Eater 2 Burst though.
Bamco pls

On the PS4, for physical copies, the entire disc is copied to the hard disk. The disc will spin up in the drive for a security check when you play, but it will eventually spin down. As far as I know, the PS4 has to play from the hard disk and cannot play anything straight from the disc.

Seriously? Is some logical reason behind that? By logical reason I mean something like Blu-Ray reading speeds being too low or something similar.

Playing Totori for the first time my go to description was 'Fantasy anime slice of life'. Just in terms of narrative and presentation (gameplay is a whole 'nother beast of time management). It's a worthwhile series to get into because it eskews typical save the world antics in favour of a more mild ensemble piece.
