I didn't like Witcher 3's combat either and that's not what I meant with live in=city trash. An indie game could do that better I think if they focused on it.
There will always be a degree of idealization of a setting in games and film.... I don't think it's unique to this game.

Environments and graphics look amazing.

Combat is a little hard to judge at this point. It seemed like it either was in the hands of someone that was really good or the situation was made to be easy to show what it could look like. I'll need to get my hands on it or see a live player to judge it more. I will say that it does look like it's a lot more slow and deliberate compared to other more action-y games. Bushido Blade got mentioned in the thread and that's kind of an apt way of describing what I felt about it though much higher quality, lol.

The contextual clues to exploring was nice. i noticed a bunch of things like Lanterns that were marking paths in the footage and the smoke that they mentioned. That's a pretty great way of doing it and it keeps the immersion in place.

Overall, pretty excited for it?

The one gripe I'd have after watching it in 4K is the "guiding wind"... It looks really out of place and breaks my immersion instantly. Hopefully that gets refined to look more natural and or there is an option to tone it down or something... It seems like it's everywhere and it's really jarring to me.

EDIT: I just realized it is an ability. That is great. Problem solved. But it still looks too... angular? and solid... For wind.

It looks like a generic open world game and it's so empty

The combat and the stealth is weak as fuck

I was expecting more

I don't know how many people would be roaming the hills crammed with Mongol invaders to be honest I'm guessing not many though , I think and hope we'll see densely populated villages .

Just got around to watching it, looks great especially that look over the whole island around the 7:10 min mark. The shadows and very visible shadow cascade drag it down a bit, this will hopefully be fixed with a PS5 upgrade patch.

The combat is what I'm most surprised by, they really kept the one-hit kills in and this is so satisfying to see. A sword can kill with one hit and this is how it should be. I love it.

Really hyped for this, now more than ever! Shit delays.

I noticed at the beginning it had 'intense violence' on the rating ...

I hope there is decapitations and everything... not just limbs.

Agree, I think I'll just avoid that ability.

Real time reactions:

Hard to believe this is running on a PS4. Stunning.

Two minutes in. "Exploration has been at the heart of our open world design since the very beginning, but you can't have exploration if you don't have curiosity. So we've continually asked ourselves, how can we let the island guide you in the most thematic and immersive ways possible." *opens map, clicks on a question mark*

There is smoke bellowing from that area, you don't need a damned map marker.

Looks great.

Pluses:

-Combat looked awesome. Not just a typical combat system with a Samurai flair, but actually fresh, fun and totally suited to this legend
-Dishonorable combat (stealth, fear, Batman, essentially) looked awesome too. It’s rare to see a game offer two entirely distinct ways to play, and seemingly nail both
-Art style is beautiful
-Attempt at making some discovery less artificial, and more a natural part of the world, is appreciated

Minuses:

-I groaned a little bit when I saw we’d be collecting plants and scraps and whatnot. I don’t mind, and it’ll provide some cool crafting gameplay, but does every single open world game have to have this system? At some point, it’s going to get old, and whatever game breaks the camel’s back, is going to get a lot of backlash
-Same for PoIs being detailed on the map. Did we learn nothing from BotW? Let me find this stuff naturally
-Visuals don’t look as good as they once did, but that’s defo nitpicking. It’s still beautiful
-Arrow headshot animation is cringe. A reward for a well aimed, sneaky shot, should be satisfying, not a canned, out-of-place body shot animation

I left more excited for this. I really like the uniqueness of the samurai theme, and it looks like they’re making something that’s going to be a lot of fun.

The only question is, do I play this on my 1080p PS4, or give it the proper love on my PS5? Lol.

I too am not a big fan of stealth games either and hoping that it is really an option for the player. Sneak around or just go balls to the wall and kick in the front door.

They showed us two different ways to take out the same camp, one balls to the wall and one stealth, it seems like that's a choice we'll be able to make throughout he game.

Ass creed: ghost [but in a boring setting]
There is a thread already... here you go..

It will let you have homosexual romances too /S

Game is looking SUPER cool. Seems like a must buy as far as I'm concerned. Some clear Assassin's Creed inspirations which isn't necessarily a bad thing although I do hope infiltrating camps/bases won't be as prevalent a feature as it is in AC. The score sounds incredible.

As out of place as a navigation system is, gust of wind is a smart way of incorporating way points and somewhat fits the tone.

You know what feeling I get from watching the gameplay? The same feeling Days Gone gave me. Looks great, combat seems fun, but the world feels boringly empty and you'll just be moving endlessly from one point to another for some weak sub-plot and just move on and repeat for 40 hours. Don't get me wrong, I loved Days Gone and unlike Days Gone critics cant complain about the setting and protagonist because they suck Japanese media like cocaine. Still, I wasn't impressed and I doubt this will be anything above just some decent fun experience. Will probably get it day one since we have no games anyway in these dark times...

At 6:57 the water doesn't have any ripple effect at all. Either it's ice, which doesn't look, or he's walking on water :messenger_tears_of_joy:

It didn't seem interactive at all at 6:40 either.
I always find these type of things strange - the level of intricate detail in producing something so minute such as seeing blood literally hit the ground as Jin flicks his sword. Yet there's seemingly no physical interaction from something as obvious as water.

2020 the worst year in modern history bouyed up by the release of some of the best games in modern history. ohhh baby this looks great I can’t wait.

I’m not sure If it was for the sake of the trailer but it looks just like a Sony open world game to me. Nothing ground breaking or revolutionary. I was kind of hoping for a bit more natural destruction in the environments when he stabbed that guy through the rice paper in the original trailer but I will still lap this up. Hyper destruction can come next gen maybe.

Sony certainly kicking goals for my tastes lately!

Just want to say that getting the choice between honor and dishonor, is really cool. It’s going to be tempting to take down some of those harder camps via the dishonorable tactics, and I think that’s going to create a cool conflict between necessity, and the character that gamers are trying to be.

It’s also kind of interesting to see these tactics frowned upon. Almost every game out there has players initially making a stealth approach before combat breaks lose — they’ve kind of mainstreamed the idea of sneaking around and stabbing people in the back. Being told to face your enemies, and fight them face to face is really intriguing.

Yeah, I agree. It still looks like a great current gen game but it seems a little less sharp than before, maybe just the YT compression?

Definitely curious to learn about PS5 plans for it. Could decide whether I wait or not. Doubt I can wait, but maybe..

I wonder if the gameplay differential between the two styles will warrant a full playthrough dedicated to each.

What if you can upgrade your horse with new rims, tires and sick turbocharger?

That vista as you play the flute at 7:00 minutes is beautiful. So far it feels like this game is borrowing heavily from other titles The enemy alert indicator feels really familiar. A lot of Assassin's Creed vibes. Also not sure how I feel about the QOL for collecting crafting materials having no animation and with the ability to do it on horseback. I guess that beats the long and drawn out method that Rockstar uses and becomes a chore to sit through after the first few times.

What I liked:

- Great art direction. The natural world just looks beautiful
- Wonderful vistas
- Great wind, smoke and fire effects
- Great sense of style. From wardrobe to charms, everything showcased impeccable Japanese aesthetics
- Great music
- Very good cutscenes

What I didn't like:

- The world seems extremely depopulated. Where have all the NPCs gone? Perhaps villages and cities exist, but they didn't show them
- The HUD seems very intrusive. Big descriptions, big icons. The shinning loot-able plants and bushes are ugly and a distraction
- Wasn't fast travel supposed to do away with waypoints? I could be wrong, but it didn't seem that way to me
- Level design seems off. "Stiff" might be a good description
- The game is visually inconsistent. Great draw distance coexists with nearby low-resolution rocks. Some NPCs don't cast shadows in odd situations
- Combat strikes me as strange. It looked extremely easy. Why do enemies wait till you're done before attacking you?
- Too much time spent on Photomode

For me it's just the overall feel the game gives...I actually had chills watching it, I was so excited. I would pay anything to play this right now!

I love the aesthetic and the open 'empty' areas are so japanese stylistically and so beautiful filled with flora and fauna..... hilarious that there are people complaining about it.... just goes to show that they dont 'get it'.

Looks amazing, pretty much everything I was hoping for, and I am so glad to see the option to not have to sneak around everywhere and wait for 5 minutes in a bush whistling for idiots is available! Honourable samurai all the way!

Also great this is coming out the same day as Paper Mario, since that means my wife will have a new game she’ll be wanting to play while I’m getting stuck into this!

Looks incredible. I'm so happy they nailed the combat! A bit less enthusiastic on the stealth so I hope it's not a large part of the game.

Thought it was funny how they were touting no waypoints but instead we get magic wind, lol.

My impression is you choose to the style style or the more up front style

the combat is very scenographic, don't get me wrong, but it looks stiff.

i wasn't expecting euphoria engine like in rdr2 but this looks the opposite, i like visceral combat where the last hit when you kill the enemy transfer the kinetic force of the blow to the the enemies that fall down in different ways with ragdoll and physics involved (like where you throw a granade in a tps and you see the enemies flying realistically everywhere with a real sense of power), here is basically 1-2 hit kill and then the death animation start and when it finish they glue to the terrain (pretty noticeable if you pay attention), i noticed the same thing during the reveal gameplay trailer and never liked it.

for someone this is nitpicking, i'm very aware of this, and many people like the elegant rythm and resemblance with old samurai movie and 1-2 hit kills ala bushido blade, i fully understand that and i like the realism and not spongy enemies myself, it's a development choice, more power to you guys, but when i judge combat in every game, i like to have every kill looking different, meaty, dynamic, not precanned like this, i guess the first times it will be spectacular but when you kill 154537897348873495 enemies during a game, seeing the same 5 death animations over and over again is a thing that i really hate in every game, even worst if you try to hit the enemy again with him not reacting and the blade passing through him because he is locked on the death animation with a very old gen feeling (if you pay attention the guy who play never strikes again an enemies who start the death animation, probably because of how wrong this would look)
also the overall combat seems very basic and easy, but maybe the demo was easy on purpose, but one hit counter i think it will be the same even on hard.

the positive things were the pretty cool wind gps and the stance system even if we saw very little of how this work, also the music was outstanding.

i'm rewatching the 4k video and the graphics looks pretty good, maybe the rocks textures looks a bit flat, but every open world has some flat textures here and there, i still prefer the overall look of horizon and rdr2 tbh.

don't put smiley reaction on my post, just quote me and tell what you think, i'm a pretty open minded person and i'm still gonna buy the game on day one, not really an hater (you can see my post history).

like i said, the animations thing can sound nitpicky, but we are all different with our priorities when we judge combat in games, i care a lot about how different a kill looks everytime and i'm bored by samey precanned animations.
Everything looks fine except for the impact the arrows have when hitting enemies, for how good and grounded the animations look on everything else, the enemies flying away from arrow shots seem a little out of place.

Anyway my anticipation for the game has grown now, Sucker Punch seems to have a real good one here.
yep, bow hit reaction are pretty bad.

I hope there are something to explore naturally, without quest compass or foxes/birds. It is a cool idea and I'm glad they did it. But if they use too much, the fox/bird will became a cooler quest compass instead of a way to explore by your own.

They'll learn.

I don't think they will, there's little incentive right now for Sony or Nintendo to do better communicating with their fans since those bases are so consolidated and so faithful. Microsoft is the one feeling a bit of pressure because they need to make gamepass connect with a larger crowd.

It honestly boggles my mind people think this was a good way to present this game, it made it look like the most generic game ever and I'm fairly confident that's not the case.

Swordplay looks very Assassin's Creed but at least it seems appropriately lethal (wonder if that applies to Jin being hit as well). No enemies levels is a plus. Really hate the UI that pops up when you enter a mongrel stronghold that tells you what needs to be done (again, very Assassin's creed).

Jin As A Ghost - the firecrackers diversion reminds me of Tenchu. I loved throwing out the rice win in the original to distract a guard and slitting his throat before he can take a sip and reclaiming the item. Good memories. I was expecting more from the fear aspect, like maybe you'd string up a defeated guard to freak out other guards. As it stands, it looks like you just strike fear once you break stealth and go billy badass on a group of enemies.

TIL: setting fire to a ship suddenly sets the entire encampment ablaze.

Graphics are top tier and it'll Def give tlou 2 a run for itrs money on terms of best graphics on console. Gorgeous game and combat looks good and fun. Can't fucking wait!! Next Gen starts with this one and tlou 2.

This looks great but is definitely a good looking current gen game. If you watch it back in 4k you can see where it had to make current gen concessions, specifically with some textures. Still very impressive, no doubt.

The exploration looks cool. The combat looks like a Ubisoft game (+ Nioh's stances) which is not a good thing...
I don't agree, AC is very sluggish. This seems more timing based and very fast to cut through a few enemies if your timing is good. I bet it will be challenging enough on the harder difficulties.

Not sure what to make of it. I can say that I've had my fill of stealth for a life time so I'm disappointed that it's in the game (although I shouldn't be surprised given the setting) but I'm glad that it's not the entire focus.

I'm taking a wait and see approach before I get excited. Haven't really been into the whole ancient japaanese feudal shit since I was a teenager tbh.

That sounds like an art direction choice. They probably want enemies to fall to the ground in a way that reminds the player of old Samurai movies.
and i perfectly understand that, but it looks fake and overly theatrical to me.
i hate seeing the samey death animation for 50+ hours with the enemies that literally glue to the terrain, we are in 2020, you can't make a game without even an inch of ragdoll, at least for people like me who like dynamic death animations and some sense of weight when you strike the final blow.

i repeat once again, i know it's nitpicking, but to me it looks\feel soooo old gen.
i mean look the melee in tlou1-2, it is spectacular but still very physical and heavy.

WTF! This week just keeps on giving! Mafia remake, UE 5 reveal and now this. What have we just seen again, damn? I have to admit, despite the fact that I know that Sony WWS are among the very top of the industry, at the reveal at E3 I was skeptical, thought the game will either be downgraded or it was running on PS5. And here we are, damn. Are here any person who would not be content if PS5 launch games were this good technically? I mean, this looks like a nextgen game 100%. It's unbelievable. Remember the PC master race types who were parroting at the beginning of the gen (and forever after) that we won't see huge leaps compared to the beginning? Yeah, just compare this (and numerous other games) with anything at the begining. This game is astonishig technically.

And not only technically, that music!! The Last Samurai is one of my favorite movies ever and this video with its music and pictures conveyed the same feeling to me. I wonder what does the Japanese Sony management feel when they see something like this. Are they proud? Or do they feel weird because it's made by non-Japanese people?

Gameplay is also good, it's the Japanese AC we never got. And I really like those one hit kills.

Anyway, I can't wait for it, day 1!

Yeah the whole camp on fire after the boat seemed odd but I wonder if it was just a shortened camp than what was shown or it simply hid a cutscene( mostly because some camera cut were too abrupt when he lit the boat).
Other than that it looks great I'll wait for a gamersyde high bitrate video because youtube murdered the quality of the video.
Ennemies seemed too easy to kill but either it was High end powered Jin or low level ennemies or that everything is deadly even to you.Or the game was set in easy which is probable.
