Not bad it reminded me of a Japanese Witcher/Assissin's Creed game. The gameplay looked a little stale, slow and boring but hopefully it picks up as you progress. The black and white option looked awesome! Overall I think it was a mistake showing this after the UE5 PS5 demo yesterday. The visuals although beautiful seem to not impress as much in fact I'm surprised it was a ps4pro footage. Still a day one purchase for me!

Graphics and art direction are the best of the best, i wish they would have made a game more interesting than this.

The gameplay looked very samey to stuff we've been doing the last 15 years with a samurai coat of paint. First off, the movement of the main character is off, he has this boxy shoulder strut that isn't right in terms of animation. Then the transition to full run looks awful, like he's more explosive than an Olympic sprinter.

I'll use the Witcher 3 as an example for my next point. Those environments looked lived in. Ghost doesn't at all. It has this somewhat randomly generated look. Nothing seemed interesting beyond that first shot overlooking the land. Okay, that was cool, go to the smoke. But once we got down on the ground, it fell apart. Everything looked bland and randomly generated beyond the overdone grass and flowers blowing in the breeze effect. Horizon ZD had some of that randomly generated feel, but it was much better than this.

The combat seemed passable for mindless fun, but the AI looked almost PS2 Tenchu level stupid. It doesn't have to insanely smart to be fun, I get that, and I'm sure some of it was for demo purposes, but still. I know Ghost is a hero character and it's supposed to make nerds feel cool, but I can already tell this will be easy as hell once we figure out the AI. And that won't take long. Example. Why is the AI hyper-alert to a pebble being thrown 8 feet from him, yet a grown man can hurry behind him through gravel and dirt without being heard at all? Ninja!

There was just nothing that stood out to me at all. It looked extremely safe on all levels. It's like they felt they're making a samurai game and that's something different, so no need for anything else. Horse, bow, reflections, overdone foilage blowing in the breeze. Just an opinion.
I dunno.... anyway The Witcher 3 had shit combat and I played through it and the DLC's and Cyberpunk looks like a Deus Ex rip off... and I hate the aesthetic of the game and the driving looks trash but I'll still buy it and play it.

Also Japanese are very tidy people.... not like the filthy pigs that inhabit The Witchers world. Witcher wasn't lived in either....come to Ireland I'll show you 'lived in'! LOL

Sometimes you focus too much on the tiny details and you miss the entire package and how it makes you feel.... and GOT makes me feel like I'm a Kurosawa film! That is Awesome!

I think that's the case, but it's a little weird that they specifically said in the state of play that Japanese VA is the way to go. I honestly don't understand why a game like this, with the setting it has, was not mocapped in Japanese in the first place.
Very true, they should known with setting like this most people want to play this game with Japanese dub.

Seriously, this is true for ANY Japanese game.
Nier Gestalt says hello.

Honestly, you don't even need mocap for lip syncing anymore. There's AI that can sync lip movement to different languages for you. It was used in FF7R and works amazingly.

Looks great though I wasn't really blown away by any of it.
Seems like a fairly standard open world game so far, but in a cool setting. Collectables, crafting, enemy bases, standard stealth and all that.

The more direct combat looked better. I love the whole concept of taking down enemies quickly and it could be quite tense if it works both ways (as in you die quickly too).
I hope there is enough customization to make it worth playing through multiple times. The Infamous games were great in offering 2 unique paths that made them worth playing twice.

Ultimately I guess it will really come down to how good the story is and how enjoyable the world is to explore. If there's a lot of fun and unique things to do I'm all in, but after this this video I'm a bit worried you'll reach a new area and will be greeted with checklist design like:
"Mongol Bases taken 0/5
Shrines found 0/8
Upgrade materials found 0/12"

Which would be quite disappointing.

Also yeah it's nice they specifically mention japanese voice acting but it's a shame the mocap is for english. Playing as a japanese character in japan talking japanese but with the weird dub effect will be awkward.

Everything looks fine except for the impact the arrows have when hitting enemies, for how good and grounded the animations look on everything else, the enemies flying away from arrow shots seem a little out of place.

Anyway my anticipation for the game has grown now, Sucker Punch seems to have a real good one here.

couple crappy screens I grabbed straight from YT video but I just dig the colors

Maybe they believe that they can sync the dub in an acceptable manner, rather than delay the game.

After all, the PS5 is coming.

The graphics and animations look great, but thats to be expected, all sony's studios this gen have been on point on the front.

The combat I can't make any definitive comment, watching it made it feel clunky, but playing might be more fluid and skill oriented, so I'll wait to see someone actually playing it with a pad in hand or a demo so I can test it myself.

So Im just starting to watch the video and the world doesnt look very detailed? It almost seems like they are going for a bit more stylized but with realistic character models and Im not sure that it works.

Combat looks, ok.

Stealth? I think Batman and AC is going to sue somebody.

So far this game dropped down from a day 1 purchase to a "buy on sale".

re-watched direct feed now. Love the combat and the overall dynamics of it. Every strike counts. It seems all parry based and some kind of block that contextually animated Jins reaction to attacks, so good. Notice enemy attack indicators in come cases, unblockables requiring a counter maybe? Still very curious to get a precise rundown of how it works, especially the hud stuff we see bottom left. Some animation blending issues still there, some weird looking reactions of enemies hit by the bow... hopefully this is the build from before the final polishing stretch happening now.
When Jin is in ghost mode hiding and finds a heavy, the square prompt on it says "Slaughter" rather than "AssassinatE"

What I absolutely hate is the lack of any item pickup animations, but I know I'm a minority (yes I did love that stuff in RDR2) and most of the players will appreciate it to be this way.

I didn't like Witcher 3's combat either and that's not what I meant with live in=city trash. An indie game could do that better I think if they focused on it.

It even says as a bullet point in the exploration section: explore abandoned buildings and gather rare resources.

So, probably no going in buildings in cities. Probably no interior castles.

The main thing I came away with is the black & white mode seems neat. Otherwise, I'm sure the game will be of high quality, but what they put on display in the video doesn't excite me.

While I've seen better things graphically and the gameplay didn't look like it was groundbreaking, the art style here is probably in my top 5 of all time. What a breathtakingly beautiful world they've crafted. They've really captured the dreamy Japanese fantasy forest landscape as well as that classic feudal feel you get from old Japanese popcorn classics like Rashamon and 7 samurai.

Hopefully they show combat inside of larger buildings and such. Also, mechanics like with the animals are a great touch. What would be nice is if there are tons of little interactable secrets hidden around the environment that tell a story. TW3 had lots and lots of world building through the environment but I just wish there was more that was interactable, that you could inspect and or manipulate in some way more than just looking at with the camera. Bonus if I can collect an object that then opens up NON story specific interactions with NPCs that then changes the world in certain ways.

Anyway, first game in a very long time that made me a bit sad I only have a PC. I'll have to hit up my friend to borrow his PS4 at some point if he gets this. Enjoy it brothers.

Looks incredible. I'm so happy they nailed the combat! A bit less enthusiastic on the stealth so I hope it's not a large part of the game.

Thought it was funny how they were touting no waypoints but instead we get magic wind, lol.

I too am not a big fan of stealth games either and hoping that it is really an option for the player. Sneak around or just go balls to the wall and kick in the front door.
