Playstation State of Play for Ghost of Tsushima 05/14/20 (1pm PT / 4pm ET / 9pm UK)

I don't agree, AC is very sluggish. This seems more timing based and very fast to cut through a few enemies if your timing is good. I bet it will be challenging enough on the harder difficulties.
AC is more time based now too though, parries have a way higher emphasis since they changed the combat with Origins. The whole waiting to pull out your sword to get a one-shot kill is unique but its not enough to make it feel different.

I think its clear the devs took huge influence from Ubisoft, one of them even said this game is the Japanese AC game everyones been wanting. Even the devs are saying it lol.

They showed the stealth and action ways to clear an enemy camp, that is the most Ubisoft thing I have ever seen. I'm surprised he didn't start climbing a tower to reveal more of the map after the camp demo was done.

and i perfectly understand that, but it looks fake and overly theatrical to me.
i hate seeing the samey death animation for 50+ hours with the enemies that literally glue to the terrain, we are in 2020, you can't make a game without even an inch of ragdoll, at least for people like me who like dynamic death animations and some sense of weight when you strike the final blow.

i repeat once again, i know it's nitpicking, but to me it looks\feel soooo old gen.
i mean look the melee in tlou1-2, it is spectacular but still very physical and heavy.

Reminds me of the spartan kick in Odyssey...pretty funny shit! Games!
yeah but it looks out of place with such a realistic artstyle, it will looks far better with proper ragdoll and physics.

this is how you make bow combat visceral and realistic, not with an exagerate precanned animation that don't even take account of the angle where you hit the enemy.

yeah we will talk again when you are gonna see the same 5-10 death animations in a 40-50 hours game.

Looks fantastic. Can't believe it's running on a PS4.

Agree that I want confirmation that this world is full of things to do, because it does look barren. I don't need to see hundreds of people running everywhere either, but the world itself looks empty. Want to be sure it's more than just a huge gap between objectives and there's a REASON to explore it.

Unsure how to read on combat, may need to play it to get a better idea.

Overall very excited.

Didn't really give me that impression at all... seemed like a Kurosawa talky made into a game!

The sheathed sword to kill is essential to the style, the design language is totally different, following animals like foxes and praying at certain monuments....

Game design in general, across the entire industry has become ubiquitous and it's easy to deny a game its unique qualities just because it shares some design trends or standards.

However I believe it has a strong identity and I would tie it more to Kurosawa as I said than AC.

i just saw the gameplay, i think the style is great and the colors too (the wind is a fantastic choice, it brings a world to life, that was one of the many things that i loved in dragon's dogma), the textures felt a little off sometimes, the grass is cool and nature in general is great, the combat was awful for my taste so i'm not gonna buy it. However i feel like this game is gonna make a lot of people happy.

I'm kidding, I would love ragdolls too but maybe there's limitations from the hardware...who knows!? But it does let them achieve the movie like aesthetic...

The style is unique, the discussion was about the gameplay. The combat looks like it was ripped out of next years AC game.

Collecting flowers for costume dyes is smart, smart, smart. Photomode looks rad too, can't wait to see what people do with it. I've seen enough to purchase the game and I was really skeptical beforehand. Outside of the visuals, I don't really see what this game is offering that sets it apart , but it looks competent enough and when you add in the setting, I've got to try it.

Not impressed by Ghost. The combat has a weak, disposable feel to it. Weak impacts, weak deaths, no tension in the standoffs. This is the sort of thing Japanese games tend to get right, so the Japanese setting here is jarring.

You said it yourself, it's not Japanese developed so our best hope was for some combination of Batman, Assassin's Creed, Witcher styled combat. The only plus side is that it doesn't appear to be bogged down with Assassin's Creed's most recent trend of giving you and enemies levels which can make combat encounters overly long as you whittle down health bars.

I think you might have a point with the tension.... they should have maybe shown what was at stake, how you could die easily if you don't time things right.

There was definitely something to be elevated in that area. I'm still excited though...

yep, i said this thing long time ago when i watched the reveal trailer, they are cutting down a lot of physics from bodies etc. to have that constantly moving vegetation, next gen with proper cpu can't come soon enough.

days gone has the exact same problem with hordes on screen, the game totally cuts the physics and ragdoll, you can throw a granade into an horde just to see the zombies falling down like they are falling asleep in a ridicolus way with the exact same animation.

1. The UI is gone and instead, the world tells you where to go
2. There are random events
3. Combat is all about precision, parrying and brutal deathblows
4. Standoffs let Jin can challenge enemies to impromptu duels
5. Stances help Jin take on different kinds of enemies
6. There are combat and stealth options but your journey is ultimately to become The Ghost
7. Play as a stealthy ‘ghost’ and you can terrify enemies
8. Jin has plenty of weapons in his arsenal
9. Empower Jin with helpful charms
10. Things can get a little more aerial with the grappling hook
11. Crafting could be involved
12. Energy could be crucial when approaching combat
13. There's somehow still a respect for life and ceremonies
14. Your clothes matter, and they're super customizable
15. Witness the new benchmark for photo modes
16. There are plenty of options as to how you want to play the game

I will be super disappointed if next gen arrives and they don't put in more physics based stuff like rag-dolls and vegetation reacting to your movements etc.....

I already kinda want a huge patch for this to do all that stuff...

Kind of bullshit and even when they are using environmental clues, it's not exactly subtle. The map is still littered with object markers and even the non marked items on the map seem to have animal leading you by the nose. Some of that seems completely unnecessary. The encampment was marked by a question mark on the map and then you could way point it and have gust of wind lead you, but why is this necessary. There is a plum of smoke from the encampment that you could just ride to by looking at the sky. You have this beautiful environment that can tell the player a story but you are so afraid they'll miss content that you need to hand hold them. The animal bit is a good idea, but why not have something akin to a buzzard circling overhead to lead you to that "woods are haunted" NPC instead of Navi in bird form showing you the way?

well they have to utilize that powerfull ryzen in some way, this stuff is gonna be standard on next-gen.

Matt Wales at Eurogamer on the GoT State of Play

Ahead of its 17th July launch on PS4, Sony has offered a closer look at developer Sucker Punch's open-world samurai adventure Ghost of Tsushima, and, as if there was any doubt left after previous showings, it's looking utterly breathtaking.

How do you feel about the B&W mode and Japanese voice-over options? Are those the kind of things you would choose to use in a playthrough?

The game was designed by English speakers. The benefit to original language voicing is that the script was written in that language originally and the director is typically far more comfortable with that language and able to convey the scene as acted better in his native tongue, more hands-on with the voice actors on line delivery, etc.

None of those benefits here.

It looked beautiful, but (yet another comparison) like a very basic version of Assassin's Creed Origins or Odyssey, hopefully I'm proved wrong. I think people take those games for granted, the variety in the open-world and depth of gameplay is difficult to match for a much smaller development team.

I remember back in MGS2, crippling the guards, holding them up, shooting the fruit and ice and then moving the bodies around, throwing them down stairs and stuff was so much of the fun..... they really need to get back to that!

Seriously funny seeing how people for the most party overwhelmingly laud Breath of the Wild as one of the best open world games ever and then I see tons of comments already like:

Combat seems really simple and bland.
Crap generic stealth.
The world seems empty.
Downgrade.
They didn't show any story.

All of these which could be easily leveled and are actually very applicable to Breath of the Wild.

People need to realize that great games are more than the sum of their parts and that you really don't know until you play them.
let me know when open world games get this level of combat, world and puzzle flexibility ill wait

Finally got to see it in 4k on my TV. Incredible, really. Loved the visuals and combat seemed good and slow, but kinda easy in the demo.
Animations and image quality also looked excellent. I'm trying not to draw comparisons to God of War here but I can't help it. This is going to be a very good adventure game!

If people don't like a certain type of game or specific mechanic, then I can understand that. Don't like open world, then this won't change it. Don't like parry based combat, gotcha.

But look at half the comments on here or social media and they say something like I mentioned and just comment superficially. Generic, nothing new, boring gameplay.

BOTW is by far one of the most positively rated games. I would say at least 60% of the people making those comments think Breath of the Wild is good.

I just find it comical.
BOTW has a way more gamey/fun feel to it then most Cinematic open world games I mean you can beat the last boss with a tree branch if you want how many other open world games allow you that sort of freedom.

Plus, we don't know the difficulty they show cased the gameplay.

Here's hope that was easy or normal.

you really have to play rdr2, that game is "physical" and interactive as fuck, one of his best quality.
I've finished it, played through when it came out.....
It's alright, story was too slow for my liking but it did do some things really well and it nails the atmosphere. I don't remember messing around with the physics though, so maybe I should take another look.

Went from my most hyped game for the rest of the year to the kind of game a get 6 months later at half price.

I was never overly hyped but a wait and see. Now I'm with you on waiting for a discount if I end up buying it at all. Reminds me too much of AC games where the gameplay isn't enjoyable to keep me engaged.

There will always be a degree of idealization of a setting in games and film.... I don't think it's unique to this game.

I agree, and I'm fine with it being a separation from reality even or hyper real. I'm willing to be open-minded about either. I just don't think they pulled off an interesting world, that's all.

The visuals are good but I hope the gameplay is not as boring as HZD. I guess the creativity of games like Zelda BOTW (even though I wasn’ta big fan of the over reliance of rotation mechanics in the dungeons) really can spoil a genre for someone.

Christ alive, was BOTW your first open world game or something?
BOTW brought more to the table for a MODERN open world game that wasn't something from rockstar. Look up the phyics alone in this game and point to me another game where you can do the stuff in BOTW
