Ok, so last night I hooked up my PS VR for the first time.
Setup impressions: Holy shit this is a fuckton of wires, I have my PS4 setup as the centerpiece entertainment device in my living room, so it's a bit unsightly at the moment. I would expect future versions to be wireless or at least require less wires.
Comfort: Surprisingly light and comfortable, though I have no other reference point to measure against( haven't tried OR or Vive). Being right handed, I was using my right hand to guide the back of the set onto my head, and had to get comfortable with using my left hand to do this in order to avoid the wire( don't know if that makes sense, I figure those with the PSVR know what I'm referring to).
Earphones: Unsurprisingly shitty in quality. For whatever reason I was only getting sound out of one side( maybe I need to change a setting?). I used my earbuds from my note 4 and got audio on both sides so, not sure what the issue is with the included set.
Image: A bit blurry and low rez, but I understand that's a limitation of playing it on a vanilla Ps4. Not sure how much it's improved on Pro, but I'm looking to get one when they're like $299. In the meantime, this is 'good enough'. I set the screen size to large and started up Return of the Jedi on Netflix. My eyes and mind were pretty convinced that I was sitting in a theatre. So I can see myself getting alot of use out of cinema mode, especially for those big FX movies( Star Wars/Trek, Marvel, etc). Tonight I'm going to pop in the Force Awakens 3D and see how the new 4.5 update works for that.
Software: I haven't as yet bought any games, but I dabbled in a few pieces of free software and a few games off the demo disc:
Playroom: This was simplistic but surprisingly fun playing this with my son. At one point I shot the wrong character and he shot back at me, which made me duck lol. Hopefully they add more games to that, as it's a fun little intro and time-waster.
RIGS: I suck at this game hard, as far as how to move my machine, but it's clearly fun and well made. I actually braced myself when I jumped from a high platform, that 'oh fuck' sense you get when on a rollar-coaster and gravity is taking hold of you as you fall was real. I'll probably pick this up when it hits $20. A full mech game would rule.
Call of Duty Jackal( or something like that) : I actually enjoyed this as a freebie. Graphics weren't all that, but the sense of scale was decent and it was fun chasing around and targeting ships. If it isn't obvious already, we need a FULL X-wing Star Wars game. Is something like this in the wings? If not, why not!? Are you shitting me? Or a new Rogue Squadron game.
Driveclub VR: Yeah, all the feedback I've heard is true. The game looks pretty shitty. BUT, it plays nice and racing is one of the genres that VR was made for. Bring on GT Sport, or some other racing game. I'd love a new Motorstorm as the last one was pretty awesome in 3D, but I understand that IP is dead for whatever reason? Any event, I had a good bit of fun with this one. A $20 purchase
PS Worlds: So far I've only played Ocean descent. Now we're onto something. I've always been fascinated by the ocean, and this little game did a great job of making me feel like I was really underwater. I was actually scared to stick my head out the cage because I was expecting something to come out. Also, when the game first boots up you're in a dark space with little lights and creatures swimming around you. The darkness was actually a little unsettling, so I can fully understand why something like Until Dawn ROB or Resident Evil would scare the fuck out of someone if you enter a dark space. You really do feel like you're 'there'. I'd buy this game just for Ocean descent, as well as London Heist which I'll be checking out tonight( and heard good things about), but I can wait for it to drop to $20 or lower.
All in all, despite the image being a low rez and slightly blurry, I was transported to those worlds and I reacted to them in a way I'd expect to in real life. I can't wait to get home tonight and dabble some more in the demos and watch Star Wars TFA in 3D, so I can say this is the first gaming device I've purchased in a while that has me salivating for my next playtime. Another converted VR fan here, and I eagerly await more.
EDIT: I forgot that I also tried EVE Valkerie. That, along with the COD jackal game, is what has me craving a full on Xwing/Tie-fighter experience. Granted, the experience was short and basically ended just as something was about to happen. But, sitting in that cockpit, the scale of ships around me, the chatter of my co-pilots around me, the realistic sense of being in the vastness of space.... THIS is what I dreamed VR to be.
I'm also happy to say that, hopefully this isn't premature, that I hadn't noticed any of the motion sickness that others are reporting, and I was definitely playing the type of games that would likely induce that queasy feeling.
