It's actually easier that way, since you become so over-leveled.

Yep, it's kinda fun. They sort of made it a bit harder to do in BW...jerks. I almost did it on my last playthrough on Platinum but I just had to use a secondary for fun.

In RBY, we meet Lance the most powerful trainer in Kanto (before the plot twist) uses Dragonite.

in ADV, Steven the champion uses Metagross.

In DPPT, Cynthia has Garchomp.

But there's no epic trainer to use Tyranitar.
