What I don't get, and I don't want to sound like an elitist, is why legendaries are not banned in VGC.
Usually people tend to avoid them even in friendly battles and these people use them in tournaments?

Are some of them banned?
The only ones banned are the event-only Pokemon. Last year they banned everything that is banned from the Battle Tower (so you could use the trios, but not any ubers + events). Most people preferred last year's format. Kyogre's probably the most overcentralizing Pokemon in the game :lol

This year's ban list:

Ineligible Pokémon
The following Pokémon NOT eligible for use in the tournament:

151 - Mew
251 - Celebi
385 - Jirachi
386 - Deoxys
489 - Phione
490 - Manaphy
491 - Darkrai
492 - Shaymin
493 - Arceus

Restricted Pokémon
During battle, a player's team of four Pokémon may not have more than two Pokémon from the list below. A player's Team Information Sheet may contain up to four Pokémon from the list below, as long as two non-restricted Pokémon are also listed on the sheet.

150 - Mewtwo
249 - Lugia
250 - Ho-Oh
382 - Kyogre
383 - Groudon
384 - Rayquaza
483 - Dialga
484 - Palkia
487 - Giratina
I believe the Battle Tower banlist is basically both of those lists combined.

Rayquaza's pretty bad. It's Kyogre and Abomasnow that seem to be on every team. Oh, and Palkia and / or Dialga. Those four are probably the four most used Pokemon right now. The most used team period is Hitmontop + Kyogre backed up by Abomasnow and Palkia (sometimes replace Palkia with Giratina).

This is probably one of my favourite VGC Videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoXpaSX02D8
I'm surprised Hitmontop is most used, it seems like a really unlikely Pokemon and wow that match was close. I wonder how the uploader got direct feed footage of the battle video like that.

Hitmontop became popular after Seattle and people saw it in action. A couple of Smogonites discovered it was really good (Detect, Fake Out, Mach Punch, Sucker Punch - using Technician). Put into action in Seattle and since one of them was the winner, everyone saw it and copied it.

I could be wrong, but doesn't every single one of the Pokemon in the 'restricted' category have a higher base stat value than the Pokemon in the 'ineligible' category save for Arceus?

Yes. As I said, the ineligible category is for Pokemon you could only get from a Nintendo event. Restricted seems to be all the Pokemon banned from Battle Tower that aren't outright banned.

I really haven't done much Pokewalking outside of the first week tbh :lol

I should probably look into using that more once I get some more breeding done.
I've got two right now. Do you want one?
(have you got a houndour or a rydon? if not any pokemon will do)

Cool. Thanks.
I'm at the wifi room now, but this is the first time I've traded with this method. Do I just wait or talk to the computer?

First you need to open up your Pal Pad item. It should be with your key items and whatnot.

There's an option to check your friend code and an option to register new friend codes. Put my code in your pad and tell me yours. Afterwards, go downstairs in a Pokemon Center and talk to the person at the counter. The one in the middle, I believe.

EDIT: Err....if you're already online, I don't know if you can open up the Pal Pad while online. Either way, I need your Friend Code (dammit, Nintendo!) in order to trade with you.

I actually do have a Ampharos, but it might not be high level enough to last in the battle because even though it can do quad damage against the Gyrados and nails it in one hit, the Gyrados' sheer hitting power cuts the Ampharos' health down by over 2/3s.

In a bit I'll dig out my DS and have a look at what my possible team options could be.

Hey I'm back!

For those who didn't see the original post a few pages or so back I'm stuck at Dragon gym Claire and don't know what to do.

Ok here's what I got to work with:

lvl39 Charizard
FireFang
Aerial Ace
Sunny Day
Flamethrower

lvl 35 Machamp

Submission
Foresight
Vital Throw
Karate Chop

lvl 33 Togekiss
Swweet Kiss
Charm
Extrasensory
Encore

lvl 37 Piloswine
Ice Shard
Icy Wind
Endure
Take Down

lvl 33 Meganium
Reflect
Synthesis
Razor Leaf
Petal Dance

lvl 34 Ampharos
Charge
Flash
Discharge
Thunderpunch

I would find TM Thunder for your Ampharos and knock out the Gyarados. Actually it should be able to one-shot the Gyarados with Discharge.

I'd use that Piloswine to knock out the Dragonairs.

As for the Kingdra, just debuff the shit out of it. Maybe use Flash a ton and then have your Togekiss confuse it, then bring out something to brute force it's HP down. Kingdra is a tough customer if you don't have any dragon-type moves.

Piloswine actually seems pretty bad against the Dragonairs because they just use a water move and one hit kill it.

My Ampharos is able to one hit kill the Gyrados but the Gyrados is faster than it and can get a big hit in.

Ice Shard on Piloswhine will always go first. If it doesn't one-hit kill the Dragonairs, sacrifice another Pokemon (say, Ampharos) to use a revive on it.

If you're smart about it, you can use Togekiss to Encore to lock the Dragonairs into Thunder Wave and use the turns to heal multiple Pokemon.

Yeah, use Togekiss' Encore to make predicting easier. Charizard to set up Sunny Day, then once he dies switch to Meganium, set up a Reflect and go nuts since Synthesis is 100% hp heal in the sun. If there's Pokemon who are killing you because they're too fast, send out Piloswine and use Icy Wind to slow them down and set up your next Pokemon to take it out.

Yeah since school finished, I haven't really had the drive to use the Pokewalker =/

You don't need a drive... just always have it on your person. :lol

I got like 5000 steps just now browsing GAF while rotating the Pokewalker with my free hand. It's like when you watch porn with one hand on the close button and the other hand... never mind.

...and I got Linoone instead of Skitty. Boo.

I think part of the reason that most legendaries are permitted in this year's VGC is to just change it up a little bit from previous years. I dunno.

I'm not too hot about ubers either, but at least this gives me an excuse to actually use some of those legendaries I RNG'd for.

@Lone prodigy
I'm still willing to trade you that kabuto and tamato berry for the skorupi and tyrouge if you you've still got them.

Awesome, thanks for the Reaper Cloth! Enjoy the Rhydon! Good luck with the Pokedex!
If you still need the extra reaper cloth let me know. I could use the extra EQ TM. I'll be available from 5PM EST until 12AM EST.

Yep, I still have a few more Dusclops I want to evolve so I could definitely use another one. Do you need anything besides the EQ TM?

but why hitmontop?

Fighting type in general is actually pretty useful with all the Dialga and Aboma floating around. STAB, Technician Mach Punch is even better. Top's decent defenses means it can actually take a it too. Plus, Fake Out is very good in doubles.

Fighting types are also godly when paired up with Scarf Giratina using Shadow Force (physical Ghost Fly but stronger and can't be nullified by Protect). Everything that resists Shadow Force is pummeled by Fighting attacks.

Technician as you found out increases the power of Fake Out and Mach Punch (which he gets STAB on too)
Fake Out, Mach Punch, Sucker Punch, and Detect are all priority moves so he needs no speed letting you invest all the EVs in HP and Atk with just a bit in speed to outspeed other Hitmontop (which made for a hilarious little metagame in itself as people slowly increased their speed investment to outspeed each other :lol )

Top does brutal damage to Dialga which is a very popular Pokemon in VGC and hits everything else super hard too. It's one of those Pokemon which you just don't think about because it's not seen much in regular play, then once you give it a good look, you realize how amazing it is.

Got a Kabutops through GTS. Do you have a Trapinch?

Choice Scarf and stop being whiny about legendaries guys :( Honestly. At least put up an argument about why you'd be opposed to Pokemon like Zapdos / Articuno / Moltres.

Oh, and when a Pokemon like Machamp goes first against Gengar, just remember it's probably scarfed and that means it's locked onto that one move.

If it means anything I think Legendaries are pretty cool. When I put together tournies I always allow one 'uber' (base stat total 580-600) per team, Legendaries included. Honestly, not to say that the Kanto Birds are harmless... but they're pretty tame for Legendaries and people really seem to like using them (chicks fucking love Articuno: true story).

I'm thinking of allowing a point system instead though for my next tournament for people that want to use Legendaries with a capital L. Like you're allowed to have a total of '7 points' per team.

(BST 180-555) = 1 point
(BST 580-600) = 2 points
(BST 600+) = 3 points

I've only got one reaper cloth that I can spare at the moment, but I could use an extra thunder wave TM(EQ TM is priority though). Is there anything else I could offer besides the 1 reaper cloth that could fetch me thunder wave?

Yeah, but I'll have to hatch a few extra ones since I've only got one ATM. If you give me until later on tonight I could hand you one that has at least three 31IV stats so that you can breed a superior one of your own with the right nature. I'll take a skorupi if you've still got any.

I'll start breeding right away.
