Pokémon Heart Gold/Superior Silver |OT|

Sixfortyfive

He who pursues two rabbits gets two rabbits.
So I've got two stars left to get on my HeartGold trainer card. Got bored with catching/breeding/evolving Pokemon at around 420 or so, so I decided to dust off the old Battle Tower team and try for that 100-win streak again. Togekiss/Gengar/Garchomp drop Palmer like the chump he is twice, but just like last time this team meets its untimely demise at the hands of an ice specialist Ace Trainer with a Sheer Cold Dewgong or some fucking crap somewhere around match 65. I figure it's time I finally get serious about cheesing the AI.

The best Battle Tower strategy documented to date is to take advantage of the fact that the AI rarely (never?) switches. For any reason. So what you do is: Trick a Choice Scarf onto the opponent's lead, paralyze it and lower some of its other stats, then bring in Drapion and Accupressure to your heart's content. Accupressure raises a random stat (including accuracy and evasion) by 2 stages, and Drapion's Battle Armor ability prevents it from being screwed over by critical hits. As long as you're not up against something that can 3HKO you or better, you win. Takes forever to get to +6 in every stat, but it's also pretty damn funny and the easiest win button you'll ever have at your disposal as far as the Frontier is concerned.

I've got a Timid all-31 Latias just sitting in my box, so I decide to put it to use as the Trick lead. One Skorupi breeding project and an afternoon of EV training + leveling later, I've more or less got 2 team members ready, but I don't have the BP for tutor/TM moves that I need. Hm.

I do have this guy sitting in my box though:

Salamence LV 50 w/ Focus Sash
Adamant, 252 Atk / 6 SpAtk / 252 Speed
IVs: all 31
- Outrage
- Earthquake
- Flamethrower
- Hydro Pump

A fine Battle Hall menace if ever there was one. So I use this guy to hack my way to the colored print for the Hall while at the same time farming the BP I need for my Tower team. Sweet.

After a mostly uneventful cruise to 170+, Salamence's reign of terror is stopped cold by Glaceon of all things at match 187. Can't OHKO it without a critical. Blizzard -> Ice Shard. gg

Fucking ice types, man.
Love 'em.

Now I just need to come up with a 3rd member for the Tower team. Probably going to go with a steel since they resist stuff that Latias tends to draw. Don't feel like expending any more brain power on ideas tonight, though.

I also absolutely cannot wait to relive the Battle Factory all over again on HeartGold. Oh god kill me.

So... any particular reason why Soul Silver is still pounding Heart Gold in terms of sales? Do people really love Lugia that much? Soul > Heart, spiritual stuff?

Water Dragon is better than Rainbow Turkey.

Also, Salamence is now Uber.

Does anyone know when the Enigma Stone will be available? The Jirachi event ended today so I kinda hoped it will be available starting tomorrow. But there hasn't been any announcement or was there?

You could just try logging onto Wifi daily!

What I want is a Celebi that's released outside of Japan. Is that so much to ask?

EV question...
Say I hit the cap for Speed EVs (255 I think?). If I kill another Zubat, does that 1 speed EV get counted? As in, the game recognizes that ev gain but since I hit the cap I don't get the point, so I've lost that ev point that i could've used for another stat and have lost the potential to maximize my possible ev gain.

This would also mean that you could battle 510 zubats and then you'd stop gaining ALL Evs since the cap was hit. I ask this because when I ev train I just battle the mons Who give the evs I want, but I don't want to unknowingly hit the cap for a stat and still gain "neutral" evs ...

Thanks :lol

No, after 255 they don't count anymore. I wouldn't recommend hitting 255 though. You're wasting a stat point. Stop at 252.

Thanks for the quick reply. I know I shouldn't ev train without counting because of that lost point but I am just too lazy and not hardcore enough. I honestly wish I never had heard about ev training but now that I have there is no way I'm going to raise a completely inept pokemon haha.

Just worry about it for multiplayer and battle tower. I don't even think about EVs or Natures when I play through single player. The right moveset and strategy is enough to take care of anything for the main quest.

If you can wait until tomorrow I can pop down to the Pokeathlon and buy you one.
Thank you very much. I might just squeeze into Kanto by then if I stop breeding and challenge the E4.

salamence uber when pokemon like suicune are not uber, yeah, good work :-|
I'm not saying I agree with Salamence going Uber, but Suicune over Salamence? Really?

It's not finalized yet, but 6 people have voted Uber, 1 OU, and one hasn't voted yet. I'd say he's going Uber but I don't really know the process and I'm not following it too closely as I don't really have any intention of playing Singles OU until B&W comes out when this won't matter anyway.

yes i think so, suicune has a very good defense and can became very annoying with calm mind + sleep talk and rest. Then he has a lot of Hp.

That leaves him with one attack to actually hit you with and only a 33% chance of even hitting you when asleep. Not to mention he's pretty predictable. Overall, Suicune has lower stats than Salamence, crappier movepool, and less options. As for HP, it's 5 stat points above Salamence's.

Honestly, pretty much every half decent team can find a way around Suicune. Unless you're making teams without a phazer, a way to deal with bulky water types or even a bulky water type of your own you shouldn't be having this much trouble with it.

Crocune may be a powerful set, but Salamence it is not. And even Salamence shouldn't be Uber. Fortunately Black & White aren't too far off so we won't be stuck this way for long...

Just got back into Pokemon, after the last game I played was the original Silver...

Holy crap, it's gotten so much more complex. It's weird that the presentation of these games is super kiddy, yet the actual mechanics are insanely hardcore.

While we are on the subject, does anyone have a male growlithe with...*goes to look up what I need* Morning Sun bred on, Mild/Lonely/Rash/neutral nature, and a held fire stone?

calm mind + high defense can became very annoying. Then ice shard destroy salamence, and it's a very common move. On the other side thunderbolt is very common too, but high defense and calm mind boost can help, and if your pokemon with electr/grass moves are gone, suicune wins.

Ice Shard isn't that common and even if it was, you wouldn't really live long enough to KO Salamence with it anyway. I'm not saying Salamence should be banned, but if you see Suicune as more of a threat than Salamence, you need more experience.

Quick question: Will the Eevee Bill gives you always be male, or is it possible to get a female one from him?
I think it's the same as a bred Eevee (1/8 chance of being Female) but don't hold me to that.

I'd be up for another tournament if anyone sets anything up.

Meh...I've never really cared for Salamence anyways.

I do find the decision a bit silly, but I guess smogon did it so that people wouldn't have to worry about using at least two pokemon in order to take it out(outside of ice moves I don't think anything can one hit KO without setup). Correct me if I'm wrong though.

I haven't used Suicune in a long time either, but there is no way that it outclasses Salamence.

Ah rats. I thought that Bill's Grandfather would just give me a Fire Stone for my dear Vulpix. Turns out I need to show him a Lickitung first. Anyone willing to trade right now?

Salamence is a really ugly pokemon who epitomises what i hate about recent pokemon design (particularly his gen not so much gen IV). Plus he stopped people from using the infinetly more awesome dragonite.

I'm here and I have the Fire Stone. Tell me when you're ready.
