Obviously thats not what I meant, read what he wrote. He's not talking about Pikachu getting a critical hit, he's talking about....well I don't even know what he's talking about.
He's talking about competitive aspects of the game, many of which existed in similar form in the original games (EVs/IVs). They've just been refined over the years and the generations.

Explanation of EVs (Including Gen 1).

Hell, smogon even has a section on Red/Blue: http://www.smogon.com/rb/

re: competitive Pokemon

yeah that stuff existed back then too, but you never heard about it, simply because the internet in 1998 isn't the same internet as today. Information gets around much faster and further, so more people know about and enjoy competitive battling.

I like it myself, I just hate that stealth rock rapes one of my favorite monsters, Charizard w/ Belly Drum.

Anyone else miss the days when Pokemon strategy was "Hey this guy is using a grass Pokemon, so I'll use a fire one."?

Even in the RBY days, pokemon was never that simple. Example:

Opponent has Blastoise. You throw out Venusaur. Blastoise uses Ice Beam.

Nah, it totally still is like that. Single-player.

So yeah, I'm one of those noobs who doesn't battle competitively and just trains with their starter. :lol I'd like to try it sometime though I chose Chikorita this time around. What's a good leveling team for the time being?
I only have one badge though and just beat Team Rocket in the Slowpoke Well.
Mareep and Geodude (not counting the egg) are my only other Pokemon I've caught. :/

Turn Battle Style to Set, then try.
What does that do? I didn't try it.

Set makes it so that when you defeat a trainer's monster, you don't get prompted to switch, the next monster just comes out.

So it makes the single player game functiion like link battles do.

Makes the game harder basically, but it's good practice if you want to battle other human beings.

I still play like this even when I battle others online. I never want to learn what all the stats do in Pokemon. Never spent money on the stat booster items in the game, only would breed for new pokemon, never for the stats, and I get rid of moves that don't damage. The only stat-changing move I like is Sand-attack. :lol

I've lasted pretty well since the launch of Blue just knowing that water beats fire, fire beats grass, etc...

This is my approach, basically. Pokémon is fun enough when it's played like that.

Have you ever won an online battle?

Yeah. None of my friends care enough to EV train or whatever crap it is, neither do I! :p So it's always fun just guessing each other's pokemons!

I never even finished Platinum...I'm scared that the Pokemon burnout is starting to hit me. I hope I don't take home SS tomorrow and not even make it past the first 3 hours..

The 3rd version is my least played version out of all of the gens (except Yellow). Emerald & Platinum were largely ignored.

I'm gonna start SoulSilver, then when I beat it I'll move on to HeartGold. I didn't even really play Pearl. I'm just a collector of all the games really.

I might buy the guide there if they say it's discounted. If not I'll buy it on Amazon for cheaper. $20 for a guide is too much, I paid $11 for the giant Platinum guide last year on Amazon, lol.

God damn it, its going to be hard to wait for Amazon to ship the game to me. I would do my standard trick of buying the game at target and returning the copy Amazon sends to them, but I have a gut feeling that the version Amazon is sending with the figure could have a different UPC on the box.

Earler today I did a hit and run for my Jirachi. Set my DS to just before it would make the wireless connection, went on my way to work, made a slight detour and pulled up alongside the local gamestop on the way, opened the DS, pushed A and downloaded Jirachi, without having to leave my car. Once it was complete, I sped away, they never knew what hit them.

Fuck.

Why didn't I do this.

Did this today, but with 3 people all getting Jirachi. Hit and run fo' reel.

Might anyone have an extra GameStop Jirachi to trade? Kinda have been too sick to drive anywhere during the whole promotion. I've got some extra Pikachu-Colored Pichus, MYSTRY Mews & (I think) an unhatched Manaphy egg. Any help would be amazing :D

How do you get extras of the Gamestop ones?
Every time I try it says that I already have one and can not get another.

Start a new game? Unless you only have one game cart...

Pokemon pretty much already is an mmo if you think about it.

On another note, which is the best guide being released for these?

Prima guides have always been good. Unlike that mega platinum guide the HG/SS guide is smaller, and it looks like they're releasing a full Pokedex book in April.

I decided to Goozex it and luckily got #3 in the queue for Soul Silver... :D

I saw that Nintendo Power guide tonight at a Blockbuster when I was looking for used games. It looked pretty good, but looked small compared to the Platinum guide next to it. Does Prima usually beat out the Nintendo Power ones?

Well, that was probably just the Nintendo Power magazine with the HG/SS cover story. Nintendo Power hasn't printed their own guides for anything in years, since before Nintendo sold Nintendo Power I think.

You are right... I thought the guide was a NP one, but it was Prima... Oops :lol

The Pokemon Company International does all of Nintendo's first party guides for the Pokemon games now. The only other company that does Pokemon guides is Prima, and I don't think they did the Platinum mega guide, and they aren't doing either of the HG/SS guides either. I've got the current HG/SS guide and it's not a Prima.

I'm a little sad to hear the guide is normal-size this time. I was hoping for another giant one like Platinum got.

Well, as I said, I don't think the Platinum guide was done by prima, but apparently it was.

And according to my HG/SS guide (which is sitting right in front of me) it was published by The Pokemon Company International which is owned by the Pokemon Company, which is in turn, owned by Nintendo.

So I'm apparently not completely wrong.

The problem with the Prima guide this time around is that they split the bloody thing in 2.

The first guide only covers Johto and the Second guide covers Kanto.

Ugh why did they go back to what they did with the diamond and pearl guides when the Platinum mega guide was near perfect since it had everything in one package :(

Oh crap you're right, it is split. On top of that, it looks like the Kanto guide doesn't come out for over a month.

I thought I heard something about them being removed, but I could be mistaken. I know they aren't in the Euro version.

I will be PISSED if they removed the casino. It has been in every Pokemon game here in the States and I've always had a blast gambling away all my pokemoney.

EDIT: Anyone have any luck at Walmart?

It's true you guys get Voltorb Flip, instead of the slot machines.

I wouldn't mind it if I were getting a western copy. I used 5 mins on the slot machines, and then I remembered why I hate then, went to the counter and bought coins instead. Never used them since.

I'm trying to figure out all the competitive stuff but most of the sites I have found start too in-depth for me.

Back when I played pokemon a lot (like 5 years ago lols) I'd build teams just to have types that hit everything, but thats obviously rather too simplistic. Smogon has some good explanation of various roles that people try to fill in teams, but there's nothing I found that indicates what roles see the most use and where (for an offensive comp, you presumably use less walls or what have you than in a stall comp).

I'm trying to decide what team to build in SS but I have no idea where to start beyond copying someone :(

FFFFFFUUUUUUUUU

Are you sure we Americans aren't getting the slot machines? Bulbapedia only mentions the European version, it doesn't say anything about the US release.

Ahhh that game looks awesome. I have Platinum for slots anyways.

I'm a little bummed out guys...

Turns out that I came up short on money, so now I can't buy the game opening day tomorrow... Oh well.

All I have is just a $15 deposit on the game, but that's it. won't be getting it for a while now till I find some way to make some fast cash. Thats how broke I am.

So yeah, enjoy the game tomorrow everyone.
