Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire |OT| Hoenn Finally Confirmed

So me and my girlfriend just started playing, me on ruby her on sapphire and almost immediately with the poke-radar thing she found a Taillow with Boomblast, a 140 power move, at level 9. Is... that normal? Or by some stretch of dumb luck am I going to be taking a lot of losses as we battle a lot going through the first few gyms?
DexNav finds Pokemon with egg moves in the wild. It's a new feature.

Though yeah, you have occasions like that where a low levelled Pokemon gets acess to something that good early on lmao. You can find a Hydro Pump Surskit in Route 102 for example.

I think they appear when you have 3 Pokemon with max happiness in your party at the time.
At least, according to Serebii.

I got this as a christmas gift for my daughter. She's 6 and a half.... she's really into Poke'mon so here's hoping this won't blow her mind too bad lol. :p

I have considered playing Pokemon in the past but I have never played any of the games. If I was going to start playing would I be better off with X/Y or ORAS? Is one more beginner friendly?

Go with ORAS as that's where the playerbase will be. It's no more or less complicated than XY, just a little less linear.

My choices for a 6th have come down to:

Seviper - Already have one at level 20 and it has a surprisingly good movepool and decent stats

Glalie - Fits my theme of Hoenn native with a Mega. Valuable typing and balanced stats.

Aggron - I have a level 13 or 14 Aron I could train up. Valuable typing and a mega.

Emergency options include Metagross, Salamence, or just sticking with my five.

Also should have been more diligent getting a Shroomish with a good egg move but I'm not reraising one to 40.

I'm going to bet that her mind is going to be blown by one moment in the game.

Oh cut scene wise you mean?

I meant in the sense that she'll be able to comprehend and play. She's a first grader so reading isn't perfect yet by any means. She reads about 2-3 books a day though which is crazy to me since I never really read except in games.

I'm just unsure if the mechanics will be too much, etc. Oh well. Worst case scenario I can coach her on how to play it.

its also less active
might as well get ORAS as everyones gonna move to it
Nothing wrong with starting with XY before moving onto ORAS
ORAS is also boring aesthetically

NarrowPath asked which one was better for beginners which XY obviously is

If her level of understanding is good, she'll be alright
Just tell her to read what the NPCs say

Eh, I wouldn't assume that it would be that bad. I'm pretty sure most people got into playing the pokemon games during that age too. I was too at that age. Kids learn really fast at that age.

It's her first game I presume?

I was thinking of getting a 2DS and ORAS for a friend's kid, but he's about your daughters age (a little younger) and I'm not sure if he'll understand all the mechanics and the reading. I think your daughter will definitely enjoy it though, especially if she already likes Pokemon!

Just reached Mauvile, not sure what to make of it...
Go try to find the casino. Then you'll know exactly what to make of it...

yep i can confirm
Mesprit shows up during the day
Uxie shows up during twilight
Azelf shows up at night
someone get Serebi to update the Legendary info page with this

I haven't gotten ORAS yet but I have two questions.

Did Game Freak make any changes to the online battle systems at all? Can you Battle Spot with 6v6 Singles or is it still restricted to 3v3?
Also, do they still use the pentagon system and if so does it only apply to pokemon you get in ORAS or does XY pokemon count too? I always bred pokemon in XY so they all had the pentagon...

Shame about a serious lack of Fire Pokémon, I don't remember it being such a problem playing the it the first time round, I guess rose tinted glasses and all that...

Was always like this. Earlier this year when I started playing through Ruby again, I chose Torchic like normal. And I thought to myself "Why do I alwasy choose Torchic?" Then I started playing through and it became painfully obvious. Because you have no fire choices for a long time. I think it's pretty awful they didn't try to fix it a little. I'd rather choose something else in beginning, but Torchic is just too useful not to get. (Yeah, could bring something in from another game, but right now I'm half using old breeding stuff and half using stuff I find in-game.)

The lack of fire Pokemon is a carry over from the first four gens where type distribution was associated with difficulty. More powerful types were generally rarer. There aren't exactly many fire types in any of the first four gens. Same with ice and dragon. But since the metagame has gotten to a point where type has much less to do with if a Pokemon is good, they've changed this in the more recent games.

So I just ordered a cheap copy of Platinum in good condition, and I plan on getting all the other DS games I used to have but sold again (I've owned them all but BW/BW2, sold them at some point, stupidly). Now that we have Pokemon Bank, I've got that itch to try to play them all again and complete the Pokedex, so I can transfer Pokemon through to future titles.

My question is, what did you guys do with your DS Pokemon? Did you transfer them all through to XY/ORAS when you were done? Or did you only transfer the ones you needed for the Pokedex and leave the rest in case you wanted to play them again sometime?

Maybe that's true, but they've changed a lot of other stuff in this game. Would have been great if that was one of the changes.

I transferred any I needed to complete my living dex. And obviously all my legendaries came up through the ranks. I left my teams back though in case I needed to catch more for the dex, or go hunting for a specific Pokemon (blue Shellos I look at you).

My postgame team is currently my Pearl team.

My Kricketune, Empoleon and Golem have badges from Pearl so they're 3 region champs (Sinnoh, Kalos, Hoenn). BW didn't give ribbons although it could detect them so didn't bother there. My Luxray and Milotic are also from Pearl but they weren't originally part of my main team but now they are. I leave a space open for a Fly slave although I'm tempted to bring my Talonflame from XY over as my fly slave.

Just transfer the ones you want. Transferring from gen 4 up is tedious.

So are we going to have a google spreadsheet for battles and trades? Also the GAF pkmn league shouldn't have any oras problems right?

you can even use your bases as gyms
if you can select where your pals are you should be able to have trainers like a classic gym as well

I made clones so I can send them over and still have them in my old games.
I started pokemon at xy and then worked my way back through HGSS and B2W2. I found out about IVs, EVs, nature, egg moves, and all that and became a breeder. I just like having perfectly trained pokemon. Feels good. I'd still get my ass rammed by most people in a competitive battle though.

Considering how badly I personally think they fucked this remake up, perhaps its better they change less.

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. I'll bring starters (or at least I'll breed them) and Pokemon I like to use up, along with legendaries that I don't have in the Bank. I really only want to finish my Pokedex and play the old ones over again, don't want to bring every little pokemon up. I wish I hadn't been so stupid to get rid of them and my GBA games though, it would've been nice to have a team come up all the way from RS to ORAS. Oh well.

What's weird is that so far (I have 6 badges right now) there hasn't been a single moment where I thought having a fire pokemon in my party would've been useful. I don't even have a fire attack on my creatures, and it wasn't missed. No idea if it'll change during the remaining 2 gyms or the Elite 4, but so far it's like fire mons never existed.

I caught an Electrike with Flame Burst solely for the 3rd gym. It had Lightningrod so I pretty much wrecked it with him. But otherwise yeah I'm not sure.

I thought about using Camerupt on my team but fire is pretty useless. I guess a region dominated by water it would be...

My ninetails was used for steven's metgross, inflicting burns, and sun for solarbeam. fire types just aren't needed in hoenn.
