I really like the girls design. She looks like Mario . . . but young and female.

They atleast look better than FR-LG trainers (the boy looked pissed and the girl looked plain)
 
Both finalists at Nintendo's tournament in Seattle last weekend used the female character. Both players were male though. That hat really made a lot of enemies.

Because It looks stupid. It especially makes the male character look like crap from behind when you start battles. Worst trainer sprite ever.

I'm a guy and even I've chosen the girl most times. In fact since the option between boy/girl was made available I only chose the boy in Fire Red in my first playthrough (maybe Ruby too I can't really remember)

Dawn's design is so so so so much better than Lucas. Though for HG/SS I'll choose the boy.

Well, the first gym was about Pokémon Surfing, while another one was about climbing up a mountain and bobsled racing. And the league was simply a full battle against the leader of Orange League. :p

Edit: Where's the "11. september" date? I can only make out "Fall release" in the scan with the new Lugia artwork.

Sapphire: Girl only
Emerald: Guy once, girl thrice
Fire Red: Guy once, girl once
Leaf Green: Girl only
Diamond: Girl only twice

I've been playing pretty exclusively as the girl partly because I had to play as the guy in R/B/Y/G/S/Colo/XD, but mostly because I can't stand the R/S/E guy's hat that makes it look like he has white hair, and even moreso couldn't stand the Sinnoh guy and his hat.

In HG/SS it looks like it'll be the opposite, because I'm sure not playing that girl unless she miraculously turns out okay in-game. :( Edit: Or unless they finally introduce multiple outfits like I've been wanting for ten years, but I'm not going to kid myself on that one. :P

Well, in addition to what everyone else has said, ever since third gen (at least, I'm not sure about further back) the Pokemon games create a save and a backup save simultaneously so that if the file corrupts once then it won't be lost. Pretty important for a game that people sink hundreds of hours into (and personally I wish it would make two backups) and I'm sure it really hampers the idea of allowing multiple unique save files.

You know, a few people have noted the Mario similarity with the new girl... I kind of agree, but I wish they'd gone even further because then I probably would like her. If she was wearing full-on overalls down to her shoes, and/or if her sleeves were looser and either full-length or short like in Sunshine, I think that'd be much better than what we got. Like this, except keep the HG/SS hat and bag (and obviously convert the art style):

I guess my concern has only been in the actual outfits and style of clothes they wear. But then I always choose the male. The only thing I dont like about the current guy is the need for that scarf.

The girl this time doesnt look that nice at all, so I guess you all will be going with the guy.

She looks horrendous, and IMO, breaks the chain of the female trainers looking better than the males. Makes me sad that Kris is gone, too.

Really? I love how simple she looks. Besides her hat, she doesn't have any accessories, and she gives me a town girl vibe that none of the other female starters have (they seem more like mall girls).

I'd like her if she looked like a town girl to me, assuming your definition of a town girl is anything like what I'm imagining here (see the first picture in my earlier post), but I have the same problem with her that I had with the D/P/P guy's hat--except that instead of a hat, it's her sleeves and socks which are aiming for some kind of radical fashion statement that clashes with any down-to-earth style she might otherwise have pulled off.

Well, that's the problem. I looked over the scans myself, and the one with the new Lugia artwork only mentioned "Fall 2009" as release date. None of the scans (unless there are more scans coming) shown mentioned anything about skateboard, Wi-Fi minigames or expanded Wi-Fi features either.

However, it would be an odd decision if they ditched Kanto...so Kanto should be a given. And the device on Gold's wrist/new girls bag appears to be a re-design of the PokéGear (with something that appears to be a camera lens).
