Pokemon Gold / Silver for DS announced

I usually choose to play as the girl as the male designs get worse as time progresses.

Diamond/Pearl's was the worst yet.

DP Rival's was awesome though. <3

I've liked GSC's, RBE's, and DPPt's main character's designs more than RBY's.

Ah wait, never mind, I found the scans. Here is some info.:

-Three new Wi-Fi minigames?Ehh whatever. I'm sure it will be something like Poffin making, or maybe even something all big as the Underground, Could be cool, probably not.

-Starter may not be the only Pokemon that follows you, Pokemon follow you even after the beginning of the game.I find this really surprising, I assumed it was only going to be a short while until you went to meet the professor or something. I don't see how the scale could be every good, even for the later ones. But if this is true, they better make Pikachu one of the Pokemon that can follow you around. How amazing would it be to run around the new Kanto with a Pikachu

-The new Lugia art is AWESOME, new stock art for Ho-Oh, Wobbuffet, Chinchou, Sentret, Mareep, Gligar, Dunsparce, Hopip, Wooper, Delibird, Larvitar, Miltank, Blissey, Stantler, Phanpy, Remoraid, Octillery, Qwilfish, Slugma, Swinub, and TeddiursaThis is a given. Sugimori is a master at his work.

-New female playable character, NOT CrystalObvious addition.

-PokeGear has gotten a re-design, appears to have a cameraMakes sense. I hope they do more DSi features as well.

-Slowpoke Well and Sprout Tower return with new looks

-There is a skateboard?Woah, very weird. The real question is how will it differ from the bike, if even at all. I bet it will be very similar to the Trick Bike in R/S/E

-Confirmation of the different Pichus in game, are both part of an event in Ilex ForestCould be cool. I doubt there are going to be infinite number of possibilities though.

-September 11th Release DateThat makes a March 2010 release date sound good.

-Kanto return is hinted at (DUH)It better

-Wi-fi features expandedIf expanded means: Random Wi-Fi battles, then I'm good. If not, its not really expanded

Surprised no info on the breeding or gender difference stuff yet, I'm sure that'll come out into the open soon enough.

All girls should be ten years old with the body of a fourteen year old?

No matter how you look at it you're a pedophile.

Is it pedophilia when you look back on your youth and think about the girls you had a crush on?

I'd like her if she looked like a town girl to me, assuming your definition of a town girl is anything like what I'm imagining here (see the first picture in my earlier post), but I have the same problem with her that I had with the D/P/P guy's hat--except that instead of a hat, it's her sleeves and socks which are aiming for some kind of radical fashion statement that clashes with any down-to-earth style she might otherwise have pulled off.

That Mario girl doesn't look like a town girl to me. More like a "oh look at me aren't I cuuuuute?" type of girl.

And I had forgot you had a thing against pulled up socks. But yeah, I think this is my favourite female trainer design in the series.

Best Misty design. I cannot wait for her redesigned artwork.

Anyway, this seems to be the only information confirmed in Coro Coro:
- screens show Cynadquil following the character outside of the first town as well
- ability to play as a female character (not Crystal, newly designed)
- I see a Pichu beside the main character without a starter around so maybe you CAN have a non-starter following you? it seems to be a story-like sequence though as he's talking to another, different shade of yellow, Pichu (oh god please let me have a Charmander follow me)
- Coro Coro needs to fire their graphic designer / layout designer
- Pans of area shown when you enter, much like in Fire Red and Leaf Green

Do you mind PMing me what you are looking at?

Well, her art style and pose do convey that, but I just mean in terms of her outfit.

*looks at avatar*
Not at all. :P I just think they're very Japanese while her shorts overalls (or whatever they're called) are very Midwest-American and her sleeves--because of their tightness and unconventional length--are very... French, maybe? It all seems clashing to me.

The darker pichu shiny; one is being given away as a "pikachu-colored pichu" for Movie 12. The pichu below it is notched-ear pichu... I think. It's hard to tell.

Both of them are in this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EUByWHndSQ

I've liked GSC's, RBE's, and DPPt's main character's designs more than RBY's.
I had totally forgotten D/P had a rival until a friend mentioned it to me while replaying Platinum. Even then, I was convinced it was Wally until I actually looked it up.

The rivals haven't been good since RBY. Gary was better than you every step of the way and his battles were as tough as gym leaders. If you were going at the game's pace, you'd have a hard time fighting him.

The thief from GSC was just kind of pathetic and it's really easy to miss their end of the story by simply never going through Mt. Moon. Wally and...Andrex's avatar whose name I forgot...are equally non-threatening. They might as well be any random trainer sprite.

I'm playing through Platinum now and I feel the same way.

Blue, Gold, and Green are my favorite female, male, and rival trainer designs.

For rival personality I'm torn between Green and Silver, but they're both obnoxious jerks and that's great. This super-friendly-rival stuff from R/S/E and D/P/P needs to go. :(

His name is Pearl damnit. >:(
Or Barry in the American dubbed anime... >.>

Wally was pathetic. GSC's rival (Silver) was bad to the bone. Gary/Blue was your foil, yin to your yang. Pearl had a nonthreatening personality with a stomp-your-face-threatening team.
Just realized the rivals are named after the "second" version. Looks like I made the good choice. <3

I'm glad they change it up, although I really dislike Wally personally. Meh. <3

I'm not sure if the rivals suck as trainers now or if I've just become better at the game since RBY.

I recall losing to Gary once or twice, certainly in the final fight. These days, they'll stop you on your way out of the town and say "Wow, you got that badge? Let's fight!" and will challenge you with similar level Pokemon to the gym you just beat. And it's like...okay. I beat that gym, so what threat are you?

Yeah, I liked it when, instead of the "rivals" being some dorkity dorky-dork like this:

Pearl has the highest level Pokemon of any NPC in the series. <3

i'm sorry but look at his fucking hair

and his scarf

and striped shirt

he probably got atomic wedgies and swirlies at pokemon school EVERY DAY

Best gif of him ever. :lol

It's funny, I named this guy in the game after a friend of mine whom I've known since elementary school who was a little similar in mannerisms. I thought it was awesome when the rival all of a sudden teamed up with you on the top of Mt. Coronet and after that fight before going into Distortion World, he also heals up your team afterward. Haven't rematched him at Survival Area since I'm still filling up my National Dex.

I guess in that way he's my favorite rival tied with Gary for nostalgia reasons. Wally was a doormat, Giovanni's kid was cool but the format back then didn't give much to character depth he had potential for.
Maybe in the DS remakes Giovanni'll come back to pick up his kid
.

Green/Gary would beat the gym days or weeks before you got there in mystical in-game time, and even when you won it would feel tainted because he'd act so brash that it was like he was holding back the entire time.

The D/P/P guy is only a few steps ahead as far as in-game time goes, and he's so constantly frustrated by you beating him that even though his Pokemon are actually good it still feels too easy.

I remember that feeling of his sneering arse always being ten steps ahead of you. You'd go to the gyms and on the notice board of who had won, his name would always be there. Not only that, but that first time you beat Drake, you barely scraped by with your monsters intact, at which point he tells you that your rival is in the next room.

He robbed you of your sweet sweet victory.

To make matters worse, his team is a visible step up from any of the Elite 4's team thus far, both in movesets and levels. If you just followed the story without grinding at all, that final battle is tough.

I never got the sense of any of the other rivals dogging your footsteps or overshadowing you like Gary/Blue/Green did.

It's Lance, dude.

So, looking at the scans, I always seem to see a Pokemon near the main character.

This "could" mean that they can follow you through out the whole game.

Wow, you're right... has it really been that long that I've forgotten?

Wasn't there a Drake who had an eyepatch and white moustache at one point though?

It doesn't matter, since we all know that Lorelei was the superior Elite.

ShinoguTakeruKoeru said:
And was a pirate, yeah. RSE, that dude was all right.
Ah. He had dragons too, I remember. I must have gotten the two confused, but NOT their selection of monsters - Gyarados, Dragonair and that last damn Dragonite, RBY Hyper Beaming bastards, every last one.

Green/Gary and Cynthia are definitely the roughest Pokemon champions if you subscribe to the fight-all-trainers-but-very-few-if-any-wild-battles philosophy--their levels were significantly above what you'd expect, and unlike Steven and Wallace they didn't run type-theme teams.

Johto's
Lance, on the other hand, had a trio of Dragonite and falls just short of literally inviting you to take anything at all with Ice Beam and wreck him
. I know they liked producing a very faithful remake with Fire Red/Leaf Green, but
Lance needs so much help to be a deserving champion that
I hope they don't go that route again.

Can be made harder by the fact that they don't tell you that going into the exit after the last member of the Elite 4 makes you fight her without a chance to save or heal -.-

I wish more trainers would have themeless teams.

A themeless gym would also be good.
I like theme teams and think they can be challenging just as long as they don't limit themselves to a single elemental type. It's not the RBY days anymore, where you could sweep just about everything using only psychics.

I'm thinking something like a fairy-form theme or an indeterminate form team etc would work well. Even a cute/fast/beautiful/badass theme team might be interesting.

Nah, it's OK. I know a few vague details on GSC's storyline - enough to know the gist (town/location names, a few events, nearly* all the new Pokemon, background details on the rival, changes made in Kanto etc.) and don't play Pokemon for the storyline anyway. All you did was confirm that the
rival is not the champion you meet at the end
.

At least the ones I came across in RSE, DPPt and FRLG. There are actually monsters introduced in DPPt that I knew nothing about before this thread and I suspect, extra monsters may lurk in HGSS as well.
