I actually think that that pic is a good example of how different the art style has gotten compared to the first 2 gens.

From what I hear other artist started helping the man who did all the pokemon art for the first 2 gens when the 3rd gen started. Theres no telling if he just changed his style or if these are just different people . . . 10 years is a long time. These new GS characters look much more aimed at kids than the past ones.
