Pokemon sequel is under development for DS

IGN has a list up of what they want to see in B/W and surprisingly it doesn't suck.

  • Better Story*
  • Get Rid of HMs
  • Flying-type Eevee
  • Less Geodude/Zubat
  • Every Region
  • Better Multiplayer*
  • Better PC Box
  • Customizable Trainer/In-Battle Pokeon
  • More Evolutions
  • Better Graphics/Audio
  • The ability to gift Pokemon.
  • Trade items only.
  • Increase the level of wild Pokemon in already visited areas.
  • Being able to use your Pokedex in battle.
Bolded are what I most want.

*The reasons behind these are a little laughable but whatever.

I don't really think it's laughable to at least want something DIFFERENT from the past four generations...

The "outside of battle"-slot for HM's is something I've discussed with my brother before and I'd prefer it that way too. Or even better, just let me fly with every Pokémon that could theoretically fly if I get some artifact or badge. The moves-pool is also a pretty neat idea.

Pokedex in battle would be pretty amazing.
Every region would just be plain unfeasible. If they had one extra region, I'd be pretty psyched, but if they had all regions, it wouldn't feel so special.

I would really like it if things were more descriptive. No more two-line descriptions of moves and items that I don't understand unless I visit Bulbapedia. They should do it like they do in Paper Mario, where you can push some other button to advance the text.

Lastly, I like the audio the way it is, but maybe I'm in the minority here.

There isn't a single item or move that has a vague description that isn't understandable without outside help

Getting rid of HMs would be a dream come true. Same with optional scaling of pokemon levels in local areas (for grinding and the like).

I don't think including every region in the games is very realistic, though. The content in these games is big enough as it is. Could you imagine the dev time it'd take to fully realise Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh? It'd be ridiculous. We'd first get the game in like 2015. In fact, if they even attempted it, it'd mean we'd get one full region and three or four half-arsed regions with scaled back content. Not only would it take ages to get anywhere, none of the places you could go would be very interesting at all.

Curse. Teleport has effects outside of battle they don't tell you about.

Also, abilities sometimes have side-effects they don't tell you about. Flame Body, in addition to burning opponents in battle, also halves the time it takes to hatch an egg if you have a pokemon with the ability in your team. Synchronise on your lead makes wild pokemon with the same nature appear. Compound Eyes on your lead increases the chances wild pokemon have held items. Static makes it so areas that have Steel-types will have them appear more frequently. Intimidate has an effect on the level of wild pokemon encountered (I can't remember what).

Items and berries that stat-up and stat-down your pokemon affect their Effort Values. The Effort Value system is NEVER explained in-game.

None of these things are explained to you.

Kinda is.

I'm not talking some huge epic plot, just something to mix up the pacing and make you think "Oh, that's a neat twist"...

Already knowing how a game will play out before you play it doesn't exactly provide optimum incentive to complete it... =\

I want to cut out all of the repetitive text.

Here's an example:
Unnecessary: You encounter a wild Zubat.
--- Unnecessary because its name is clearly displayed in the upper left box.
Unnecessary: Go ______!
--- You can keep it but don't make it delay the animation of releasing your own pokemon!

Here's another:
Unnecessary: You boot up a HM!
--- Unnecessary because it's about to be said again ...
Unnecessary: The HM contained Fly!
--- Unnecessary because it's name was listed on the HM and also because it's about to be said again ...
Necessary: Would you like to teach Fly to a Pokemon?

Here's another:
Unnecessary: It looks like this tree can be cut.
--- Unnecessary because it's about to be said again ...
Unnecessary: Would you like to use Cut?
--- Unnecessary because it's about to be said again ...
Unnecessary: ____ used Cut.
--- Unnecessary because it's about to be graphically displayed.
Necessary?: (The full Power Rangers-like animation of your Pokemon going across the screen vs. the simple animation of the Pokemon doing the action if it was your lead Pokemon)

I'm an impatient player. I'm 60 hours in and just left Vermillion City. I'm pretty sure my game time would be 20 hours if just the examples above were fixed.

The story is fine. 8 gyms, Team ____, I don't mind that. What I thought was cool that they did in the Gen 4 games is have the main character NPCs more interactable (Cynthia during the plot of DPPt, Gym Leaders out and about when you went to get their numbers, etc.) It'd also be cool to see more stuff like Volkner/Flint character interactions.

HMs should be tied to badges. When you get a badge you get that option.

Sinnoh convinced me that if they focus on one region they can do it really, really well, so if the next region is bigger and as interesting/well-designed as Sinnoh I can forgive no multi-regions.

I also think you should be able to register up to 3 items, and not just key items either. Going into my bag every time repel ran out in a cave was really annoying.

Finally, in addition to the above and what I bolded, I want to see an actual text-wrapping system implemented. The reason all the items/names/etc. are contracted is because the games can't actually handle text going over the line width - all the text is hard-coded. Get rid of that, no more RageCandyBar or Wht Apricon please.

Why would you do that? said:
Lastly, I like the audio the way it is, but maybe I'm in the minority here.

I just want the Gen 1/2 cries replaced. The music in HGSS is awesome, and the Gen 3/4 cries are actually pretty good (Togekiss's, for example.)

The repeating text is awful and will cut down drastically on battle time if they stopped telling us what pokemon attacked us, if its sunny or rainy, if I was hurt by poison or not, etc. Just pop the name up there, make a sun appear in the sky (or raindrops), and just show our HP drop from the poison. I think we can figure it out from there.

The HMs have got to go too. FLying pokemon can fly, Pokemon with claws or sharp teeth can cut bushes, Water types can swim. Just make certain badges allow me the use of these abilities outside of battle rather than the use of some HM that Ill have to stick on some slave just so I dont screw up my movesets.

Really liking the suggestions IGN is giving, with the exception of a few. We really don't need a flying type Eevee, for example.

I agree completely otherwise, though. I'd love to see Geodude replaced by a stalagmite Pokemon, and Zubat with another species of bat (imagine a vampire bat Pokemon!). Also we need both a jellyfish and squid Pokemon to replace the Tentacool family (srsly).

holy jesus i had forgotten how bad it was

thanks for reminding me of what i hate most about the games

The two things I want most:

- Diagonal walking, ffs >_<
- Every evolution has a some kind of importance. Meaning, that a Level 100 Charmeleon can be stronger than a Level 100 Charizard...just not in the same skill-area. Maybe Charizard is stronger, but Charmeleon is faster and can hold out longer. Basically, with all the pre-evolutions we got in past Pokemon-games, give them a meaning other than "oh, it´s XYZ´s pre-evolution, how nice...now let´s evolve it so that I can use it competitively."

We totally do. Would make the wait for a pure-flying type worth it, and give the Eevee family something else unique.

I had a dream last night
after a really horrific nightmare
that I was playing Black and/or White, and that the moves the Pokemon had all kind of related to HMs and that you had to figure out which ones could be used in which situation - for example, instead of using Cut you could use any kind of slicing move such as Fury Cutter or Slash to cut down trees, and also that the move could be mapped to the Y button in a similar way you could map the bicycle or whatnot, just as an instant use thing without going through message boxes and little letterbox cutscenes of your Pokemon appearing before executing the move.

...also that the fire and grass starters were big round inflated balloon-like things and they looked really stupid. :lol

...I should try eating less before going to bed. :(

I just wish we didn't have to wait so damn long in between Coro Coros in order to get some info. C'mon Nintendo, the game is supposed to release this year.

In regards to the HM thing, I don't see why they just don't link the moves to the gym badges themselves. You already have to have the badge to use it outside of battle; why not skip the HM altogether, and just make the badge the requirement to use the move? It would still only work with certain types - flying types would be the only ones who could fly, for example - but you wouldn't need to waste a move slot.

I fired up the ol' Heart Gold to find an instance where something was too vague, but I failed for the most part. :( Perhaps you're right.

Maybe I'm too used to the descriptions in the GB/C games. Those were extremely bad.

I just wish the descriptions gave hard numbers. "This move lowers accuracy by 30%", "This hold item increases the critical hit ratio by 10%."

I found out last week my Crystal game save died. Its all gone man. My L100's, legit shinys, everything. That in turn makes my R/B/Y/G/S game saves (well, silver died to) worthless since all my good stuff had been sent to Crystal ;_; How can my 12 year old Red save file live while my 9 year old Crystal one not?? Makes me worry about my Emerald cart since that currently houses all my goodies. I could put 'em all in PKMN Box.... Gamecube memory cards have long life expectancies... right?

Gold/Silver/Crystal die faster because of the time keeping. My gold and crystal were dead as of last year. My SNES games still work....

From what Ive read Ruby/Saphire and Emerald will last forever. The battery is only for time, the pokemon are saved in flash.

This is what Ive read, but I cant confirm it. You could always transfer them to one of the DS games if youre paranoid.

I don't think Nintendo is brave enough to take out HMs. I think they're totally capable of streamlining all the HM acts though.

Have a Pokemon with cut?
Walk into a cuttable tree?
Tree is cut, keep walking.

Have a Pokemon with strength?
Giant boulder that needs a good shoving?
You're already pushing the boulder.
(And have the boulder move as the same speed as you. None of this *tap, wait, *roll, go, *tap, wait, *roll, go.

Have a Pokemon with surf?
Stepped on some water?
You're surfing.

Hmm so I guess I can't expect my Gold save to last much longer huh? My Emerald is still going good, checked it out today and went to the space station and was told the shuttles made its 260th launch. So its been 260 weeks since Emerald came out......

I never got a DS PKMN game cause I was burned out on PKMN games and cause I could tell D/P stinked in so many ways without even playing them. But I am rather paranoid so maybe I should get them all... @_@;

That sounds wayyyyy to automated. I liked the lil HM animations. Not having PKMN and good move spots designated to them but ya. What they oughta do is once you do something to an obstacle it is done for good. Like in R/B/Y did with the Seafoam Islands puzzle iirc.

Yups but ya may have forgotten since ya haven't played 'em recently. Platinum/Hg/Ss fixed that stuffs but when D/P were the only ones around ya can kinda see why I'd be turned off by such regressions.

Okay, the game is slow, but D/P have amazing music, and a really fun world (my favourite overall). Slow battling/saving != awful game.

Pearl was a lot of fun. I don't feel the game felt "dead" at all. Then again, I only ever buy one Pokemon game. Red, Gold, FireRed to warm up to Pearl. It was slower, but not slow enough that I didn't enjoy the game. They should have toned down the graphics a bit but hey people seem to bitch regardless.

It really wouldn't take that much time. Dragon Quest has beautiful animations for the monsters, and there are hundreds of them in each game, and those games only took about a year to a year and a half. They could hire a few extra people and easily get full animation done for every Pokemon in existence. It's not like it's risky.

It's pretty sad that Nintendo refuses to scare up a budget for the best-selling series in existence.

Nintendo/ Gamefreak swim in gold and clean their asses with money and more money, they could easily get some ANIMATORS (yeah, I really don't think that animators making animations would be the same as game developers making the game play . . . time that animators take for the animations shouldn't impose on the core game play like the over world design, stats, gameplay changes, story and so on ) to make some animations if they ever choose to allow people to see this damn things move.

Segata Sanshiro said:

Its not Nintendo, its Gamefreak being lazy asses.

They got tons of well Animated Pokemon in the lil side game, Poke-Park Pikachu and that had like 180 Pokemon in it and that was made by Creature Inc. If they wanted to they could . . . Gamefreak just doesn't.

(That IS atleast how it appears right now. B/W are supposed to have different dynamic cam angles as shit for the battles and some people take that to mean "Golden Sun" type battles. We still haven't seen battle gameplay :/ )

Some are, but not most. There are still hundreds of unique animated battle sprites, some of them with an abundance of animations that are little more than for character, in the DS DQ games.

This isn't impossible or unreasonable. All Nintendo has to do is spend a little more money. Of course, the ultimate effect on sales would be pretty minimal, I think, and as Nintendo loves to min/max profits to an obscene degree, I doubt we'll ever see battles in Pokemon looking better than a low-rent NES/SNES RPG.

As of Gen4 there are 467 moves in PKMN. DQ baddies are well animated but from the three I've played there isn't all that much variety in attacks and their animations. But ya Nintendo could easily afford it but if they did do that I'd expect them to not allow you to turn battle animations off and that'd stink big time!

Probably talking about 'mons like Pinsir and Farfetche'd who do not evolve nor have any pre-evolutions.

Although I see they also mentioned they want 3rd evolutions for those who only have 2, which seems kinda dumb in some cases. For example: where the hell do you go after Arcanine?
